    I finally got mine :D

Installed WoW after I disabled the User Account Control, because for some reason it wasn't reading my CD as one with data on it (it tried to burn to the installer CD as if it was a blank...), but after I disabled the UAC, it worked fine. Apparently, that's the cause of most of the problems with Vista, and as I don't really consider myself terribly ignorant, I figure I'll leave it off and deal with the occasional nags from the security center.

The screen graininess...all I can say is that in the startup screen, at lower resolution, it looked grainy-ish when one of the starburst backgrounds was set, and there wasn't a lot of sharp color definition. I don't know how much of that was the background choice, and how much was the low resolution running on the 1440x resolution screen. When I enabled 1440x resolution when logging into Vista, and set my background as a nice lake with a mirror effect of the mountains in the background (comes with vista), it was breathtakingly beautiful, and not grainy in the SLIGHTEST.

The first thing I did when I got the laptop was to reinstall Vista to remove all the bloatware (namely Norton and the Dell software crap) and after doing so, the computer is VERY speedy in everything from boot-up to shutdown, and everything in between. I haven't actually played WoW yet to see what the graphics look like, but I don't think I'll be unimpressed. I'd recommend reinstalling Vista as there is a noticable difference between the shipped state of the laptop and the cleaned-up install. The only note I have when reinstalling is that the Dell driver cd lists the driver for the 8600m GT as "nvidida 84 drivers" or something like that...don't let the 84 fool you, it's the appropriate drivers and everything is recognized as it should be.

Sadly, the noise in the headphones as previously reported is present in mine. It does NOT go away while playing anything, and I'm going to see if I can research a fix. I may try and obtain some sort of credit from Dell for this problem, as it is a VERY large nuisance when using headphones with the laptop.

Additionally, I was promised an expresscard remote when I ordered the laptop from the sales rep I spoke with, but this was not included either. Hopefully, Dell's customer support will send me one as a "replacement."

I'm very impressed with Vista; the only compatibility problem asides from the WoW CDs was with Aim Ad Hack, but I got this resolved by installing AIM separately from the install, and it works decently after the install.

That wasn't real graininess. That was just blur from running the display on sub-native resolution. I'm glad to hear you didn't have a problem!

That's too bad... I believe you can avoid this by using USB or Bluetooth headphones. There is also a CPU scaler program known as RMclock, but I don't think that this is a desirable fix as it will drain your battery.

I figured as much on the first count...I'm really impressed by every facet of this laptop except for the headset jack. I'm debating biting the bullet and getting the pair of bluetooth headphones I want, or maybe attempting to shield the headset cable with some tinfoil...we'll see.

    bmckenna,
Why not ask Dell for a sound card that works or some usb (or bt) headphones? I don't think it is right for you to pay more money for something that dell should have gotten right in the first place.

Once you receive the laptop you have 21 days in which Dell will guarantee to fix the problem or get you a new laptop.
(They will try to fix it on warranty, but there is no guarantee in that situation)

Yeah, I'm leaning more towards the BT headset they offer, if it comes with a microphone (which I believe it does). I'm certainly going to try to get something out of it, possibly a refund, or equipment if that'll work. Plus, they owe me a remote, lol, so maybe I can get both together.

TheTORCH, the problem with the headset isn't big enough that I'd want to get rid of the laptop completely, so I'm not worried about getting it fixed in whatever timeframe, only trying to either get it fixed or get some moneys back.

The only thing that expediting really helps with is if they upgrade your shipping to overnight.

If they have all the parts for your notebook, it will get built in 10 hours or less, expedited or not. If they don't have a part, they wait for a new batch to come in before they continue to build your laptop.

Nevertheless, faster shipping is always a plus, right? ;-)

As I said before in a differnet thread: The anti-glare diplay will speed things up, not the lid color. At least that's what Dell told me. There is a worldwide shortage on the glass they need for the glare displays. But I wnat one anyway!
With the headphones: Do you know if I can add BT to my order while it is still in preproduction? I use headphones all the time and because of that noise I would like to switch to BT, BUT being a real hero I did not order BT as I thought I would not need it... and I don't wanna have to put the USB stick in the notebook everytime I want to use the headphones...

Well, many of us have been told that, but so far, it seems that those of us choosing the uncolored (and the less popular) lids, are receiving our laptops faster.
Yes. You can add bluetooth to your order while it is still in preproduction. All you need to do is call your DELL rep and explain that you'd like to add it to your notebook.

you'd better add Audigy or the dedicate audio card instead of BT... or even both! I have the Audigy card and I have NO weird sounds in my headphones... anyway, did you guys tried other headphones except those Creative earbuds?

theTORCH, we have the exact order even with shipping dates ! :D
only that I have webcam, 3945ABG, BT, Audigy... how about yours?

Yes!!! Just called to check my 1520 order, and I'm told my order is being built, with an est. shipping date of August 20(this is in Australia, in case you'd like to know), which is quite a long wait, though I think I can handle it.

I think it's changed to this status in the last 2 or 3 hours, as I called not long ago.

Hope this means my order is confirmed and will actually be delivered to me, anyone know?

LMAO. Can't believe I haven't even thought of suggesting upgrading the sound card. :D
Will that really help when the problem is CPU interference though?

In any case, Bluetooth is still a worthwhile upgrade, for it allows you to add a lot of nice accessories later on.

Jaymz: I didn't get the webcam, I upgraded my wireless to the N-card, I have bluetooth, and I didn't bother upgrading the sound.

Reasons: I don't really use webcams, and when I do, I'll probably use the one that I just slap on top of my screen. I got the wireless N-card because I plan on having this laptop for quite awhile, and someone will eventually have an N-router. Bluetooth, well, cause its bluetooth :D . Finally, no Audigy for me, I'm going to be using this notebook in quiet places, so I'll either be keeping it quiet or using headphones.

    Have you gotten yours?

Bluetooth can be very useful. I use it to pair with my cell phone and browse the internet in places where there is no wireless. I have an unlimited data plan for my PDA, so it works out nicely.

I posted yesterday with a price of $1362. Well, I went to a Dell kiosk in the mall and got an additional $75 off and opted for the quote to have a 3yr. warranty. Before taxes it's looking like $1426.95. I'm debating between this and going with a really high end 17inch gaming laptop. Decisions decisions.

The Audigy upgrade is *SOFTWARE*, not hardware. If your system has the sound issue, it will have it regardless of what software/drivers/headphones you use. Many people have even said higher quality headphones make the problem worse since they amplify the sound better. The only way to guarantee you do not have the issue is to use a Bluetooth or USB headset or to purchase the Creative ExpressCard sound card, which takes the place of the ExpressCard remote and sticks out of the laptop about an inch on the side.

Audigy is not a better amplifier but has a better sound quality with no distortions and/or buzzing sounds!
of course I got it! i told you we had the same order/shipping/arrived days :D

see above! and please don't discourage people choosing Audigy. it is definitely better than the base audio card option :)

Hey there, just recently ordered my Inspiron 1520!

Midnight Blue Color with Microsatin Finish
    Intel® Core™ 2 Duo T7300 (2.0GHz/800Mhz FSB/4MB cache)
Genuine Windows Vista® Home Premium Edition
15.4 inch Wide Screen WXGA LCD (Anti-Glare)
    256MB NVIDIA® GeForce® 8600M GT
    2GB Shared Dual Channel DDR2 at 667MHz
    160GB 7200RPM SATA HDD
CD / DVD writer (DVD+/-RW Drive)

After discounts, tax, shipping, etc... it came out to $1300 and some cents.

    Order Date: 7/31
Est. Ship Date: 8/22 + 3-5 day Shipping

I'm thinking about doing live chat/calling tech support to see if I can get the free 1 day shipping and hopefully a coupon because it's taking so long.

Anybody try using ready boost on their Inspirons, or any other laptop for that matter, that already has 2GB of RAM? I'm already planning to buy a 4GB flash drive from newegg for $40 after shipping, and it's pretty fast for a flash drive so it should be perfect for ready boost which caps at 4GB. I've been checking around and there are definitely mixed opinions on the usefulness of ready boost on laptops with differing amounts of RAM and different configurations and such, so I figured it'd be best to find someone with as similar a laptop to mine as possible who has used ready boost to get their opinion on if it makes a noticeable difference.

I think that August 28th is just the default delay shipping date and most if not all laptops will be shipped well before then. More or less I think dell is trying to just say "shut up and stop complaining about us not being on top of things." but of course they deserve that anyway

I'm not encouraging or discouraging. I just want people to know that A) it does not fix the headphone jack noise problem if it already exists, and B) it is only software that gives you more options to tweak your sound options.

Stella, I see you sold your 1520 for a G1S. I would've gotten the G1S to begin with, but I couldn't justify spending $600 more for a laptop with similar components and a worse warranty. While I'm upset about the headphone noise, it's certainly not that much of a dealbreaker for me. What else made you change your mind about the 1520?

Well I called Dell today to change my order around. I changed my order to Jet Black instead of Midnight Blue. Hopefully I'll get it a little sooner. The new ship date is actually sooner than my midnight blue one. The sooner I can get it, the better. I really need this for school.

I got my 1520 from this guy http://myworld.ebay.com/2006newstar. Definitely should check his stuff out if you're interested in getting one, my experience with him was great, especially his pricing. And yes, I have confirmed that the video card that ships with it is indeed a 8600m gt.

Well, it wasn't $600 more for me--only about $400 and the G1S had wireless N, a faster processor, Bluetooth, and of course much better graphics performance. The headphone noise was something of a last straw--it's just such a ridiculous quality control issue that I don't want to support Dell anymore (even though the 1520 was my third laptop from them). The G1S has a two year warranty and the Dell had a three year warranty with Complete Care, but I can get an accidental damage policy through my insurance company for $44 a year that gives me the value of the laptop instead of just the ability to send it to *shudder* the Dell depot and possibly get a refurbished computer in return. Plus I decided since I was already sacrificing mobility for graphics performance for the first time, I may as well get the best performance possible in this size range.

I am NOT bashing the 1520--it has lots of good points and I'm hoping that these delays mean Dell is fixing the headphone jack issue (I expect the screen to remain grainy and the graphics card memory to remain GDDR2 :)).

Well now I am confused. If the Audigy option is software, it won't help with the noise problem, right? It would still be the same connection for the earphones...
The Audigy express card however could help, because I would then plug the headphones there. But it would stick out a bit... I wont use the remote anyway.
So now I have three options: Audigy express card, Bluetooth, USB
    Any suggestions???

Mmm, my laptop was configured with wireless N and bluetooth already, with the 2.0 ghz C2D, for around $1400 shipped with 3 year complete coverage, whereas the sites I was looking at had the 2.2ghz G1S at around $1900-$2000 with a 2 year complete coverage warranty. What type of insurance provider is extending that coverage to your laptop?

HP claims that Turbo Memory represents poor value and that it limits flexibility. Speaking to ZDNet UK, HP's senior category manager for business notebooks in the U.K. and Ireland, Steven Gales, said the company decided to omit Turbo Memory as a result of internal tests. "We have done quite a bit of research on this [to see] whether there is any true value for our customers, rather than taking what is available and putting it in," he said.

Steve Doddridge, senior notebook technology consultant for HP Personal Systems Group for Europe, Middle East and Africa (EMEA), added: "We looked at the baseline system performance of a standard system (with 1GB of RAM) without any Robson or ReadyBoost type of technology added, and we then compared that to the same system with Robson, and the same system but just with an (equivalently sized) SD card or USB stick."

Using Intel's benchmark test for evaluating the performance of Turbo Memory, HP's team did see the improvements in performance that Intel had predicted. However, because 1GB of Turbo Memory is effectively split into two--with one half serving ReadyBoost and the other ReadyDrive--adding a 512MB SD card or a 512MB USB stick to the baseline system resulted in the same improvements.

The greatest improvement came as a result of adding more actual RAM to the system. "We added 1GB of RAM and saw a much higher improvement in performance compared to using any of the ReadyBoost or Robson technology," Doddridge said. He added that: "If you have enough system RAM in the system already, ReadyBoost doesn't give you a lot."

so I guess I would rather wait to upgrade my 2Gb to 4Gb than using Robson or ReadyBoost ! ;)

Is there at least one owner on this forum with Audigy and still jack problems ? You never told us what was your audio card option.

I don't think Dell will continue to sell grainy screens anymore, although they are 5% or less... never heard of a grainy anti-glare so far though...

I have the Audigy option and it seems to be another configuration as I don't have any sound issues.. I'd recommend you to go with Audigy and only if you are not content.. go for an external solution.

yea.. that was my thought too when choosing between the two. they have almost identical performances (if we compare them with the same processor) and I believe that the extra 5-600 is not justified. moreover, the G1s doesn't look as sturdy as the new Inspirons do :D

I wasn't even going on looks, though I think the Inspiron is gorgeous. I just can't really justify spending that much extra for...what? DDR3 graphics? A working headphone jack that will hopefully be fixed sometime in the future? Hell, I can get a new high-end graphics card for my PC (the 8600m gt looks awesome on my laptop) and a bluetooth headset and still come out ahead. We'll see what the future brings, I guess.

with that money I would have bought the MBP
one important issue I forgot to mention is the ever winning Dell battery! I left it open to drain out the battery with playing radio with wireless on and max brightness and it lasted a little over 3 hours !
I mean if the smallest battery (56W) is that good, how about the 9 and 12 cell ones ?

With my 6 cell, doing simple web browsing, outlook (with 4 accounts) and word processing and I'm going on two hours with 57% remaining. Can't wait to try out my 9-cell.

I got 3340 my highest so far but didn't try too many options, not even OC.
The only difference between our configurations is that my HDD is @7200rpm.

What's the latest, best version of nvidia drivers anyone is using? I was looking over at laptop2go but I wasn't sure which version would be best. I'm currently testing framerates to see how much of an impact new drivers will have in WoW. On max settings, I'm averaging around 50 normally, and 30 in graphics intensive/busy areas.

    I'm using 162.22

As a general rule of thumb, I use the latest drivers from laptop2go.com that have been WHQL tested.
