I can tell you right now without even having my laptop yet, that yes you will need to slip stream the drivers. XP does not natively have much support at all, if any for sata. It has to be given drivers to see and understand how to use it.

Another question? I did return my 1520 for a refund. It is a shame. Oh well. Is there a way to not have bleed on my text. red or green with shadows. I disabled all of those in special effects. Turned on clear type. Nothing worked for me. It is on my 1505 as well. Is it because it is an lcd screen. Thanks

jpep most likely it's your screen, I don't think there is anything we can suggest besides calling up DELL and asking them. And if you alrdy got a refund, why does it matter? LOL

And I wasted the $ to get the 7200RPM 160GB HDD, I wish DELL would give some more detail on their site as to exactly what parts are used so I can get drivers already... :|

I believe they use multiple companies for this to ensure they don't have to backorder. They use all the major brands i believe.

JPEP i know how you feel. MY 1520 came in with a defective lcd screen. The florecent light in it was dead and they are shipping me a brand new laptop but not coming till thursday.

Dells quality especially with these notebooks has gone down the tubes.

Dell doesn't actually build the lcd screen...
I think all of dell's suppliers were the ones who rushed out products, they didn't want to get behind.

    couple of questions ?

    does it have gigabit ??
like to use gigabit nic eathernet for remote desktop and backup, +network drive ,.... this could be a dealbreaker,.... otherwise, I need to remove the disk manually, for large file transferes,... /backups

is the fan always on ? any options in bios ? how quiet is it ?
is the battery same ir different from E1505/6000 ?

the mouse buttons below the touchpad, do they have a loud click ?
    quiet be nice,..

any difference in heat/noice between the 8400m and 8600m,
think the 8600m is clocked a litle faster, the redering pipelines should be turned of by powermizer,... is that buildin into the chip or another software thing,.... I mean , is this going to work with linux ?
in vista, since it's aero,... how does the fan behave, on/off, quiet ?

    how is the 1.6ghz/2.2ghz ?
last not least,..... did see the 17" macbook pro,... with 1920x1200 screen,
now I'am thinking of the 17",.... could have 2 disk in it,... or remove one
and use a external raptor, for the times it's on the desk ,...
do think for at night the 17" be to big, and should have a 14" for that,...
    argh,... 14" at night, 15.4 1680x1050 for work, 17" 1920x1200 at home,....

    thanks, Rob

    hey guys!!
i know its kinda stupid... but i have the biggest problem in deciding the colour... not sure if they would come out better or inferior as they have shown in the pics...
personally i'm stuck between green and red, though red would delay my order by 4 weeks

Is there a way to check the delay a color would cause? I chose black and I won't be getting mine 'til 8/8 (ordered on the 13th of July) according to DELL.

I'm so happy the Dell models (1520, 1330 and 1420) now are the top 3 most popular laptops! Moreover, if look all the way down to the 15th place, you can count not less than 7 Dells out of 15 places !! Go Dell Go !! :D

well, welcome to the club bob, you have joined the never ending wait of Dell shipping your laptop.....LOL Good luck my friend, I think you will need it.

God I am getting depressed waiting on the idiots running Dell. Two friggin months ago I order a laptop thinking I will get it right around half way through spring/summer semester, got 2 days left of this semester and still no laptop. :(

That's true, but with dell's horrendous underclocked product it's not that far superior to the 8400, and the 8400 can be overclocked to stock speed of 8600 from what I have read. I am not gonna cancel, I have waited this long, I know I will just keep waiting, but I wish Dell would pull their crap together and learn how to run a company right. Only reason I have stayed is I can't get the price anywhere else for the product I am supposed to get. Although I guess if I never get it, I could of paid $100 for it and it's still worthless. Just depressing dealing with it, that's all.

You're a little bit wrong here. Dell has only underclocked (if you could say this way) the memory by using DDR2 instead of DDR3 (MBP) but comparing 8600GT with 8400 is quite hilarious ! :)
    8600GT has 32 pipelines vs 8/16 for 8400 and 64bit memory vs 128bit in 8600GT.

I have seen some comparable 3dmark results for the 8400 vs the 8600, so technicals aside, there is not a massive difference. Now I did pay the extra $100 for the 8600, I want it to be much better, and I hope that with driver upgrades it will end up performing better down the road then today. I was just saying that when overclocked the 8400 can come close the the 8600's performance at stock speed. I honestly don't plan to run at stock speed I want to OC it as much as I can, so I still really would rather have the 8600. Really not trying to talk negatively about it, I am just sick of reading all these posts about everyones laptop shipping when they ordered a week to two weeks after mine, and mine still hasn't even come out of build stage.

Looks like I will be selling my 1520 next year... :D well as long as I can replace it with a much better performing laptop for very little money (after selling the 1520)

Dual cores aren't even that optimized in most programs and games atm so no real point of quad core yet.

depends on what you do, and with what I do with my computer, it would be performance enhancing to have a quad. And we are also talking about a year from now, anyone on this site should know that when it comes to changes in the computer industry, a year is a LOOOONNNNGGGG time.

Than you're the less than 1% who would take advantage of a quad core!

Dual cores have been around since 2005, they've come along way optimizing how dual cores perform and even moved on to quad cores and optimized how they perform. Now they're talking 8 core systems. The gigahertz war just wasn't worth it anymore so they moved on to multi-core systems which in theory is a good idea.

Unfortunately the software 90% of us use just has not been optimized for multi-core systems just yet.

If hard drives didn't have the slow speeds that they do, many more people would be able to take advantage of them. They have really got to work on making the HDD faster, that is fast becoming the bottleneck of today's systems

    Hi everyone,
I ordered my 1520 on 7/7, had an estimated delivery of 8/1, and received on 7/16... so about 10 days from order to delivery!
I happened upon the notebook review site while looking for info, and wanted to thank everyone here for the advice and recommendations. (Coupons [that expire before the expiration!], calling sales in addition to configuring online, Dell account perks, re-ordering after price drops...). It was a bit frustrating to order when prices fluctuated so rapidly and were dependent on so many factors. I paid much more than a lot of people, but I did add the CC and probably some other stuff I didn't really need... and rather than being a student I am only the parent of two!
I don't know too much about the innards of the notebook, but think I'll be set for picture editing/videos, gaming, movies, etc.
    Things that might bother me:
    - The glossy screen was the only option (I think) in the res. I chose, but that's going to take some getting used to. Would an anti-glare screen help?
    - My "h" key clicks a little bit. Slightly annoying.
    - The touch pad doesn't respond in the same way as my old 8200... I can't seem to set the options for it in a way that is similar.
(I'm half tempted to stop reading for a while, because now I'm looking for all manner of problems I wouldn't have even thought about before... :)
grainy? chirping? noise? what? no free remote?)
I think I will be happy, though... and it's gotta last until the last kid is out of college!

That's awesome to hear it runs Oblivion great - I plan on getting the GOTY version on PC later this year (have original on 360).

Anywho, I hope mine ships before the estimated date (7/25).. it's still in production (on dell.com) and every day is going by so slow lol.

I think you missed my point Sonic, although thanks for the positive post, it's still in build stage so the likelihood of it actually shipping on time, which means sometime today, is about as close to zero as you can get. Maybe even in the negatives...lol.

I modified my order on Monday and it's been "In Production - Build Stage" since then. If they are still having LCD shortages then it will sit in the build stage forever... or until the LCD's come in. (whichever comes first)

I talked to customer service. ITs all the lcd screens that are abck ordered.

They dont expect anymore to come in for another MONTH.

So we have a long wait ahead of us. After yelling at the customer service manager because they billed me for a non working laptop I was able to atleast get a $100 credit but they refused to give me a refund.

so I am stuck waiting . I will probably take the laptop that I have apart and get it working myself until i can get the replacement.

PS the BUILD stage is where everybodies is delayed.

If that's the case, I'll be cancelling the order... There's no way I'm waiting a month for a laptop to come in! I'd rather pay $200 and get it elsewhere this week.

Yea . I my laptop has the 1280 x 800 screen. I have no choice. Dell would not let me get a refund at all. I do not want to spend the extra money for alawyer . they atleast gave me a $100 credit.

I'm not sure who you spoke to, but I just chatted with one of the guys there (at Dell) and he said the LCD delay was for desktop systems mainly... he said that my screen (wga w/ truelife) isn't part of that and I should have it within 12 days of the order being placed (which is the end of next week).

 I'll tell you one thing though... if what he just told me is one big fat lie, I'll be PI$$ED!

I think he lied to you. The customer service head told me it was the lcd screen on the 1520 that was back ordered. I have the 1280 x 800 screen.

Report back in 12 days and tell us if you have received it yet. I have been waiting 10 days for my replacement and it hasnt come yet and its past the 8 days they told me it would ship in.

I think all lcd's on all the notebooks are probably back ordered.
