hey guys, thanks to m3dor and the awesome chinese site, I have nearly been able to make everything work on XP. However, I installed and reinstalled the IR receiver driver a couple times but still it doesn't work. Actually, only the power button works to turn on/off the studio. This is not a major issue for me. The annoying thing is the studio will not stay in stand by mode, it turns back on by itself after a few minutes. Any people with a similar issue? Would appreciate very much if anyone could help me.

I have been trying to install Windows XP Pro onto my Studio 1535 but everytime setup finishes loading the setup files the pc bluescreens.

I have disabled flash cache mode and set it to ATA and I still get the bluescreen. The message is:

    STOP: C0000221 unknown hard error
    systemroot/system32/ntdll.dll

Laptop runs fine on the Dell install of Vista but I can't use the handwriting recognition pad that I've bought especially to use on the laptop which is why I want to put XP on.

    Anyone have any ideas?

@Gregorio i have an integratet microphone too, but i canot use it, i think is because of the driver. If someone can use theier microphone pleas tell me.

I have a studi 1535 and I have two problems:
I cannot install my wireless driver. If I go to the device manager there is no wireless device.
and I can't install the video drivers. They unzip, but the wizard fails to open.

I've been dual booting vista and xp on my s15. So far, it's been working great. There's just one small problem that bothers me (doesnt affect the computer in anyway.) Windows XP thinks that the Toshiba DVD-RW drive is a DVD-RAM drive. DVDs and CDs play/read fine; it's just the name that bothers me as I want to figure out why XP is doing this. Anyone else notice this?

I've got everything working, I think, except the IR... no matter what driver I use (even forcing it to use slightly incorrect drivers) it still won't work. Windows *thinks* it's working, but I don't think it's reading the signal. Is there some way to *test* it to ensure it's receiving a signal?

It seems it's time to say "Hello" :)
I'm not a "new" Studio owner, we've allready spent a few weeks together. I hope maybe one day Dell will learn from Toshiba what means "speakers".
    But... back to Studio.

I have to say that's my Studio is a "N series".
For those that doesn't know what this means: no M$ OS preinstalled.
For those that thinks is cheaper.... :) ... it's not, $1200 for this config: C2D T5850 + ATI 3450 + 250 HDD + 2GB Ram + 1510N WiFi + WLED + 6 cell + remote + 3 years warranty (not on-site) return to depo (no flash chache memory - only Vista is using it anyway). I think in most countries were Studio is sold, "N Series" it's not available.

Because it's an "N series", from my point of view, Dell should ensure drivers (and technical support ... LOL ) for any OS you might install. But .. (again "but") is this true ? I didn't used this option - technical support - yet, so I'll not comment about.

I'll just try to emphase a few things:
    - WiFi catcher can be set ONLY under Vista - once is set it doesn't matter if OS is changed;
    - CD/DVD eject buttons are working if you set AHCI for "SATA operation mode" in BIOS (I think this is a BIOS bug, this should work in both cases: ATA / AHCI ).
    - if you have probs with WiFi connection it "might" be transmition antenna. (I wrote "might" because in my case I'm sure ;). Measured transmition level is to low.);
    - existing IR receiver driver is designed ONLY for Vista. Under Linux exists allready a patch/driver that's working. If you succeded make this work under Win XP, please post a full "How To".
    - regarding sound: the closest driver that might be modded and gain acces to mics array is sound driver for Dell Latitude 6400/6500 series (for Win XP off course). I didn't tried / tested yet.
    - to recover functions of touch keys just disconnect all devices and remove battery for 1 minute. Then should be OK.
    - MediaDirect 3.5 "might" work with a minor mod: it just shouldn't be allowed to patch BIOS - media direct key section - and return Error. (Please disregard this and DON'T try/test it if you don't have ADVANCED knowlege how to recover).

In case you have probs with boot, shutdown, hibernate, sleep - use MS BootVis (it's an utility designed for XP by MS). In my case Intel drivers provided by Dell had compatibility probs.
Entering in hibernation (I'm using this alot) using Intel: more than 40 sec. Recovering from hibernation: 1 minute and 10 sec with Intel drivers ( text / mouse cursor flashing for a looooong time). After I've removed Intel driver I've got under 5 sec (!!!) for entering hibernation (4.53 sec to be exactly) and 8 to 12 seconds recovering form hibernation (this includes WiFi connected).
In case you're using Win Vista or 2008 use "Windows Performance Tools Kit" from MS to trace boot - shutdown - hibernate - sleep probs.

I'm still learning. So, if anyone succeded to make mic array and IR reciever to wok under XP, I'm all eyears.

Has anyone been able to get the sound working for the HDMI under XP? For some reason Ive had this intermittent popping sound that happens randomly, even with the speakers muted. Anyone else have this problem?

Edit - Reinstalled IDT sound driver and seems to have fixed the popping but i havent tried it with HDMI. One interesting thing that happened is that my media buttons stay lit!

Not sure why you would want to do this. I have Vista on my Inspiron 1501 right now and have had it for a year. I would never want to install XP over Vista. Vista hasnt giving me ANY problems. I love it!

I need to install XP Pro on a Dell Studio 1535.

I spent the last 4 days trying to install Windows XP on my Dell Studio 1535 machine. But when I tried to install it, I have a blue screen during the installation and the error code 0x000007b occurs.

For me, it's begin to be a big problem because I'm a student and the technician of the department don't want to connect me to the main domain since I don't have Windows XP on my computer... grrr...

So, I read a lot of posts and I didn't find a solution yet for my problem! I hope here, I'll find one!!!

This is a main description of my harware:
    IDE : Intel(R) 82801 HEM/HBM SATA AHCI Controller
    PROCESSOR: Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Duo CPU T5850 @2.16GHz
    Memory(RAM): 3.00 GB
    System-type: 32-bit Operating System

    Installed Operating System:
Windows Vista Home Premium edition ( SP1).

    Questions:
    1. How can I install Windows XP on VISTA?

    2. Also, I did a partition on my workstation to run XP in a Dual Boot with Vista... Do I need to change something in my BIOS to run the installation of XP properly? In the BIOS, I have in the Onboard Devices section, SATA Operation. Actually the configuration is AHCI. Should I change it for ATA? Any others changes requested?

Can you give help me please??? Any help will be appreciate!!!!

I just read that I should install my IDE during setup of XP. I press F6 during installation... and the setup ask me for manufacturer-supplied hardware support disk...

Can someone tell me where and how I can generate this support disk?

    Please people!

I bought in Dell Inspiron 1535 and once I installed XP. However, there is a very bad sound. I read a lot of information (upgrade Bios and instal newest audio drivers, change wireless settings...), but I want to know whether this can be corrected? How?

I look forward to a response! Thanks about information!

Have anybody problem with sound ? I mean everything is ok, but the sound is realy bad. Sound is without bass,i mean not "full" spectrum and etc. I waste a lot of time with setting up EQ, but still it`s very poor. In vista was realy god sound.

The initial review of this laptop (with Vista) stated that the speakers were kinda weak, not as full-range as the systems that came with an in-case subwoofer. For my part (Studio 17, XP SP3 installed) the sound is acceptable, but the speakers clip pretty hard if the bass is heavy.

I mean the sound quality outgoing from soundcard, not quality from built in speakers, or etc. Sound (signal) is bad on everything, studio monitors, headphones, etc.

    Hi,

I just followed all the drivers and stuff that was posted in the earlier pages for the dell studio 15. The only thing I'm missing is the microphone software and the audio drivers I installed the speakers do this weird crackle thing every few minutes. Otherwise I'm back on good ol XP!

There's a set of instructions at the link below that won't require you to register or anything...

    http://wickmanstudios.com/content/view/17/29

The only issue I'm having after following these instructions is that the IR port doesn't work (it is properly detected in Windows, but the IR remote won't work), and the Wi-Fi sniffer doesn't work. Everything else is working. I can't find any XP software for the fingerprint reader, but Windows has detected it and installed it.

Can anyone tell me, does it make any difference what sound option you choose?

IE, is everyone here using the cheapie integrated HD chipset, or has anyone tried with the Sound Blaster Audigy option?

I'm thinking a microphone is just a mic and the wire is going to run to one place or another. So maybe if the audio chipset fails to work in XP because there is no support for it, maybe Sound Blaster drivers will at least let it function as a mono microphone (if not fancy multi-angle mode).

Can anyone here confirm that the mic doesn't work with Sound Blaster? I only have about a week to reorder but I'm thinging about trying that unless I'm barking up the wrong tree.

YES! I noticed touchpad lag in BOTH vista and XP.
    It's so annoying.
Also, does anyone else's studio have a constantly blinking HDD light?

I've noticed that my hard disk light blinks about every second.
I noticed this in both Vista and XP.

What is taxing my HDD like this? Or, is this even representative of actual HDD activity, or just a glitch?

Also, yes, the touchpad Sucks. It lags, and it's unresponsive.

No that's for HD Audio, I believe related to the HDMI output or chips? You need the AMD HD audio driver and also there's a KBxxxxx patch that you run first. Google for the studio drivers page on that .nl site and it has both the patch and the driver. Run the patch, then Update Driver and that audio will go away.

I was also offered it when I ran Windows Update so, that may work too?

One thing to consider, install Quickset and then adjust the sensitivity settings (at least in Vista, is there in Quickset for XP on this model?)

The two things to check out at the touch (heavy or light) and the wrist detection. If you have tap to click enabled, then whenever your wrist gets near the touchpad it gets turned off. Other fingers even hovering over the touchpad may do this too. Also, adjust for a heavy touch so that brief slips of multiple fingers don't confuse it.

Also ditch the scrolling areas and hot corners. Those are worthless and increase the confusion area.

One thing that I find always fixes it is to let go completely, give a firm tap in the middle (even with tap to click disabled) then resume stroke and glide as normal. Somehow it seems to clear out whatever gets in the way.

And then of course, blessed bluetooth mice...aahhhh.

Windows XP should be supported by Dell, they just recently released an ISO for Ubuntu on the Studio they should at least provide some Windows XP drivers for Studio users.

    You will have problems with:
    1) The Mic array (inbuilt)
    2) Mousepad

I'm having a huge probblem with installing the video drivers, first of all, i tried all the links on the pages on this thread, but when i try installing using catalyst all it tells me is "that the drivers are not compatible with your hardware or operating system" ??

Also it doesnt seem like the computer is even finding my graphics card.

anyone have any idea? most of the other stuff i can figure out, but this just wont work(and its kind of the most important one)

Thanks for all the good info. I too have everything working except the built-in array microphone. I hope someone solves this, but I don't use a webcam/mic anyway.

By the way, Dell's XP Pro SP 2 Reinstall CD (DP/N 0YN681) works fine. It validates and passes WGA checks. Dell will send it to you free with the "correct" story, e.g. Latitude (need service code and original purchaser name) wiped clean by another department.

I tried this now but it gives me the same information as all the others:

"setup did not find a driver compatible with your hardware or operating system"

I found some drivers that actually worked, but they are for a different kind of card, and every time i log on to windows it says
"the ATI drivers installed are not for your hardware, and is not functioning properly, please install the right drivers"

its working and i can get the right resolution, but games that didnt lag before are now lagging, and they really shouldnt since its XP.

Also when i try to install messenger beta it gives me the message "this is only for windows XP or Vista" but i do have win XP

maybe this is linked to that the ATI drivers doesnt work with my "operating system"

Maybe i need to install windows XP with a new CD?

    thanx for any help

There is a patch you have to install to allow the catalyst driver to install properly. It's in the walkthrough.

Has anyone had any luck getting the IR working?

Hi all, I think its time for me to make my view also.
I work for a Company, We are dell Partners East Africa. Recently we acquired a few Studio's 15. And sad to say, That We ( east africans) are not ready for Vista at all Trust me. So tried after mich tries to get Windows XP up and Running. and i must say am really happy. Much thanks to all the People on this thread. it may seem that am just sayin this. But really think it was a collective effort. and i am glad for the internet. and it actually helped me alot. although there are some issues Eg. Finger Print Reader Issues. i have installed all the devices and Device Manager says everything is working fine.
but there is no software for the finger print and cant get that to work. So maybe if some one found a concrete way's to make it work.
    Thanks.
    Really Appriciated.

    Shane
