If that's the case, do what I did and buy a Zalman ZM-NC2000 notebook cooler. It's not much louder than my apartment's air conditioner and it keeps my 1555 cool. It's also one of the few coolers big enough for your big honkin' laptop. :p

when running windows 7 x64 you can run IK8FanGUI but to must allow the OS to run unsigned drivers which is an option on bootup. It's only one time you have to do this.

Can you guys with the laptop check the monitor properties in device manager and let us know the hardware ID? I am curious to know who makes the LCD.

I checked out the HP dv7t Quad (i7) at Best Buy today and that 1600 x 900 screen is an "LG0226"

Well i found a deal i couldn't resist and pulled the trigger. Got this for $1149 CAD:

    Intel® Core i7-720QM processor, 1.6 GHz (6 MB L2 cache)
    4 GB DDR3 SDRAM
500 GB Serial ATA, 7200 RPM
    CD-RW\DVD±RW dual-layer combo drive
    8-in-1 card reader
    17.3-in. glossy widescreen HD WLED display (1440 x 900)
1 GB ATI Mobility Radeon® HD 4650 graphics
    Integrated 10/100/1000 Ethernet LAN
    Dell™ Wireless 1397 802.11g half mini-card
    Integrated 2 MP webcam
    Microsoft® Windows® 7 Home Premium 64-bit
    Microsoft® Works 9
    McAfee® Sapphire MUI (15-month subscription)
    Battery: Rechargeable, 9-cell lithium-ion (Li-ion)
    2 year manufacturer warranty

The only thing i'm worried about is that the screen sounds like it's probably worse than even Dell's worst option. Plus i really wanted the RGBLED 1080p screen. But it was too good of a deal to say no to! Plus there's a 90 day return policy.

Should have it in a few weeks, can't wait!

On the HP, I found it by expanding "Monitors" under device manager, then right clicking Properties on "Generic PnP Monitor". Go to the Details tab. In the "Property" dropdown box select "Hardware Ids"

Thanks! very much. Too bad i've just ordered a Studio 1747 from germany. Core i7 720 + ati 4650 for 849€? :) I'm like yes. we're going for it.
The results you got are not ideal though this DPC graph looks promising. Might not be a great disadvantage. And I'm following a dell community thread about the DPC problems. They're working on it hard. So i think it'll even get better.

It's about the I/O requests made by the OS, driver etc. It's a crucial point in audio/video streaming. For example external sound card, a professional musical mixer connecting through USB. For me, surround sound is essential. I do not possess an A/V Reciever or Television with HDMI input (one way to get 5.1 from these notebooks). Since Dell discontinued the SPDIF in the analogue 3.5 audio out put, only other way is a USB external sound card.
Here's the importance of the good DPC latency. If it's bad one can experience sound crackling, drop-outs.

I have a question about the DPC Latency check too - should I be worried about the 11888µs maximum? I'm looking to use this laptop for producing and DJing with an expresscard audio output.

Also, I redid my order - I'm getting the 1747 touchscreen version! (not that I'll be using it much anyways :S )

Thanks for the info. I doubt that will apply to me, but it's good to know.

I actually went in-store today and looked at some 1600 x 900 displays. I'm really thinking i should have went with the 1080p. We'll, see, there's always the 90 day return policy!

Can anyone post pictures? www.imageshack.us should work for hosting if you don't have one.

I strangely could not find this monitor at LG Display division.
But in their current range there is only one 17.3" 1600x900 display. So at has to be that one. It is in production since the 2nd quarter of 2009.( link to LG Display)

    Luminance [cd/㎡] = 200
    Color Saturation (%) = 60%
    Viewing Angle [˚,U/D/L/R] = 50/90
    Response Time [ms] = 8

For those who have expressed the need to streak a glossy, high resolution, 17-inch display with your greasy fingers, Dell has just made your dream come true. Today, Dell announced a multitouch display version of its Studio 17 laptop.

According to Anne C at the Direct2Dell community blog, the Studio 17 will come equipped with a suite of touch software applications. You’ll be able to finger your way through photo editing, music playlists, manage video playback, and paint. Naturally, you’ll need forearms like Popeye the Sailor to reach across the keyboard for any length of time, but that’s a small price to pay for way-cool technology.

The Studio 17 has a number of processor options for you: starring from the Pentium Dual Core T4300, running at 2.1Ghz, all the way up to the Core i7-720QM quad core, running at 1.6Ghz. You also can pile in up to 4Gb of DDR memory, a 640Gb SATA 5400 RPM hard drive, an ATI Mobility RAdeon HD 4650 with 1Gb of video memory, and a 17.3-inch high definition (900p) LED display. There’s also an option for a blu-ray player, if you are so inclined.

Multitouch, unfortunately, will be paired with the Core i7 processor only. Anne C says the multitouch system will be available in a few weeks. And the starting price will be $899.

Now this i want they are working on a full hd screen led, touch! I hope they on a RGB LED screen now that would be awesome probably the price too will be kinda high. Now they do offer non core i7 machines with it but hey what do we all want in the market of today, laptops with the newest technology. Now this is what i am considering to buy and they better work on it fast, since the holidays are coming up.

Yes. You should be worried. Express Card is affected by this.
Though as i've written, its not the worst case. Might be quite usable. If not, they're working on it. That is for sure so it's only a matter of time.

Bleargh. Well, not exactly the end of the world - for the most part I'd just use it for producing. Hope the latency issue is resolved at some point.

    Are you saying Dec 22nd?

I just placed an order for a Dell Studio 17" with the 1080p screen, wireless-n card, and Intel Core i7 720QM 1.6GHz processor - and that has an estimated delivery date of 12/17/2009, with 3-5 business day shipping. That delivery date still sucks (a *month* wait??) but it's not as bad as yours.

Are you sure you didn't order it with the blue screen backing? They told me the 22nd with that option...

mine will come about a week before the announced date it seems. hope yours will proceed quick too.
(btw, on friday it was on pre-production, on saturday it was on production and on monday it was on shipping (receive date is set to thursday)... things can proceed quite fast when pre-production is ready it seems)

 good i didn't change the color... (stayed with the default black)
(in the first place i didn't want to pay 50€ (75$) for another color... thats crazy!)

The annoying thing was, I was gonna get black but the day I ordered they offered free upgrade to a colour! Why put it on special offer if you dont have the stock for 7 weeks! I am so damn annoyed at the moment I am tempted to buy something else and send this one back when it arrives. They could have at least advised me and let me change colour. CS have been completely unhelpful as usual.

I have also found once you finally get to production it is very quick, it ships from china though so that takes about three days (depending on your location)

It's not the intel integrated graphics, that's good. I have *no* experience editing video, but I know I would have considered upgrading the processor or video card. But really - I definitely think integrated graphics would have been a bad idea, but I don't know if the other options really matter or not.

I'm curious as to why you're paying more for Windows 7 professional? I don't *think* it's any advantage for video editing. It also appears you can upgrade (via a downloadable update through microsoft) after the fact for the same amount of money if you decide you need it.

If I was editing video, I know I might consider the read/write bluray drive so I could burn high def movies to disk.

And if it was me, and I was using wireless, I would get the Wireless-N card vs the G card. Of course, to go all the way, if I was transferring video over the network I would probably also just hook up a cable. I can't figure out if the computer comes with a gigabit network card, not on your order or on mine...hmm.

As I said, I'm going to send it back because of the fan modes (and probably the imperfections of the frames). A diagnosis tool from Dell I ran, confirmed what I've heard. There are three modes of action. Off, normal and high, with 0 rpm, 3?00 rpm and 4?00 rpm. The first 15 minutes after bootup the fan is off, and from then it changes every now and then. If every Dell works this way, then I suppose I won't possess one in the future.

But from what I've experienced, the palmrest did not get hot. The bottom WAS hot after a while. But this shouldn't bother anyone, I guess, unless the Studio is often used on the lap.

I use Vegas for video editing... I do basic editing... Nothing fancy. Just videos for my band to upload to Youtube.

I upgraded to Windows 7 pro cauz it has virtual XP and a friend of mine said its better than home edition.

I bought a HD video camera with a firewire port. This laptop has a firewire port too, this way i can transferr the data easily.

I just wish it would get here already. I hate waiting... I know its only been a week but geeeezzzz lets get movin.. lol

From what i understand, the delay is with the 1080p RGBLED screens, the midnight blue colour, and the i7-720QM processor, so that isn't too surprising. Congrats!

If I understand you right, you think that the screen I've ordered is NOT the 1080p RGBLED sceen  ? Since there was no other option for FullHD, I would guess it is in fact the same as on the US website (with "RGBLED" in the name).

    Any comments on that?

I have been wondering the same. If I find out we get an inferior screen in Europe to the US mine will be sent straight back. I cant find any information on the panel. When somebody gets one and we get the Monitor ID I will be able to get more info

I just looked at the preliminary shipping dates on the dell website when I configured a dell studio...

There's no delay with the default color (Chainlink Black for the i7, Ruby Red for the regular version). However, for some reason the regular version is no longer available in Black Chainlink. Also, the i7 has a delay for Midnight Blue, but the regular version has no delay for the same color (both the 17" version, so it's not that).

The regular system has a preliminary ship date of 12/3, the i7 system has a preliminary ship date of 12/14 by default (12/23 with chainlink blue).

The regular system used to have the 1080p display available, but no longer does - wow, it doesn't even have the 900p version available. It has a 1440x900 screen ("900p" was 1600x900). The i7 version has 900p and 1080p available. Every screen on there says "May delay your studio 17 ship date" - BUT none of the options actually seem to affect it. Doesn't seem to matter whether you choose the 900p or 1080p screen for the ship date.

Here it gets even more bizzare - the regular version of the laptop only has one hard drive option - "Dual: 640GB (2x 320) SATA Hard Drive (5400RPM)". No others. The i7 version appears to have the usual options. No differences for any options in the ship date.

The regular version, again, no longer has as many options as it used to. "512MB ATI Mobility Radeon HD 3650" is the only option now, used to be a "1GB ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4650" option. The i7 comes with the 1GB ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4650, no other choice.

The regular version now only has a cd/dvd burner option for the regular version, no bluray. The i7 has the usual options, including bluray. No apparent impact on ship date for either.

The regular version now only has 1 option for a wireless card - "Intel®WiFi Link 5100 802.11agn Half Mini-Card". It's my recollection that this is a pretty good option. The i7 has 2 choices - a Dell G card, and a Dell N card. None of the options appear to effect the ship date. Do any of the options support dual band wireless n I wonder?

The regular version of the laptop now has a built in bluetooth option again. The i7 still does not. Doesn't appear to affect ship date.

For sound options, the regular version now appears to only have 1 choice - a "ExpressCard Sound Blaster X-Fi Xtreme Audio Sound Card". From the picture, it appears to take up the expansion port on the laptop?? Not sure, but it's the only option (you can also get some sort of wireless receiver). The i7 still has the "high definition" sound and the Creative software "upgrade". No option appears to affect ship date.

The regular version of the laptop no longer has a backlit keyboard option. The i7 still does. No impact on ship date.

    That's it.

For the regular version, I can't tell if they started selling the old version, or if they just stripped off all the recent upgrade options. Gives me a ship date of 12/3. Once I add it to my cart, it says:
    Catalog Number: 29 DNCWSX3
    Studio 17 Intel® Core™ 2 Duo P8700 (2.53GHz/1066Mhz FSB/3MB cache) MO87HN [224-4917]

For the i7, it appears that little has changed since last week. Gives me a ship date of 12/14 with the black screen backing, 12/23 with the blue screen backing.
Here's the models numbers it gives me, though they aren't real helpful -
    Catalog Number: 29 DNDOTW1
Module Description Description Product Code & SKU Product Code & SKU
    Base Studio 17 Laptop PCS17HN [224-6922]

Keep in mind that "Ship Date" is the estimated date it ships, *not* the date you get it. So if it ships on Dec 23rd, for example, 2 days before christmas, it *probably* isn't going to show up until well after christmas is over, you know?

This is all significantly different than the last time I checked, to. Last check, the regular system came mostly with the same stuff available on the i7 system - better screen option, better video card option, backlit keyboard, etc. The only improvement is the availability of the bluetooth card. So if you're reading this next week, everything could have changed again.

Which country PaulRivers? The UK is still giving all the original options on the 1745 (ie 900p & 1080p, 500gb HD etc)

I'm in the US, so the US I assume. Sorry for not mentioning that. There's 4 choices on the Studio screen for which laptop to start with and customize - the "regular" version is the 3rd from the left (2nd most expensive), the i7 is the 4th from the left - the 1st (most) expensive.

I´ve checked the official german setup guide for the 1745/47 downloaded from Dell's german website. The specs mention a 17,3" FHD B-RG LED True Life display. In case its not that they just forgot to modify the guide, we should be happy :) .

B+RG LED on Studio 17 (92% Adobe RGB standard RGB) is not the same as the RGB LED on the XPS 16 (112% Adobe RGB standard * source*)
B+RG is the only Full HD (1080) screen that's configurable for the Studio 1745/47 to this date as far as I can tell.

The RGBLED 1080 screen is only offered with the XPS 16.

    Studio 1745/47 B+RG LED => 17,3" Full HD led-screen with TL (1.920 x 1.080) [add € 95,00 for EUR / $ 150,00 for US]
    XPS 1645 RGB LED => 16" 1080p (=1920x1080) Full HD RGBLED with TL [add € 240,00 for EUR / $ 250,00 for US]

Now were on the topic anyway:

Can someone please shed some light on the B+RG panel? I'd love to know what kind of screen/panel this actually is, and who builds it.
The Dell B+RG name doesn't get me any propper results on Google.

    Thx

Here's how to find it if you have this screen:

Ok, thanks for this information. Nevertheless, even when it´s not the Uber-display of the XPS16, we still have no evidence for the claim that US version and Europe version differ when it comes to display quality. Can anybody confirm that both have the B+RG-display?
