Well it will be good when a few of us get the HD version, then we can tell if Dell are using the same screens worldwide and if its RGB

    Hi all, first post here.

I ordered my new Dell Studio 1745 on 02/11 and received it on 23/11. I'm in the UK. I've been lurking in this forum a bit before ordering and found some useful posts so thought I'd add a bit back to the community.

The 1745 I ordered has the P8700 and is stock (6GB RAM, 2 * 320GB hard drives) apart from getting the 1920*1080 B+RG screen and backlit keyboard.

Temps are 36 and 32 for the two cores while currently running a load of windows and Virtualbox. Hard drives are 28 and 35 degrees C.

I've only run 3DMark 06 and the new stalker benchmark. Got 5900 on 3Dmark at defaults (was expecting a little more), and approx. 30 fps max on stalker running at 1920*1080, high detail, full enhanced dynamic lighting, no AA, DX10.1 settings. The 4650 got to 55 degrees doing this, but I didn't check straight away. Generally this laptop doesn't get too warm, neither does the power brick.

The keys feel nice, and the backlight is nice, though I wish the del key was larger as I tend to use that more than backspace.

For those curious the screen hardware ID is AUO149D according to Device Manager. A quick google doesn't bring much up.

On WEI, I get 6.2 out of the CPU and RAM, 6.6 for graphics and gaming graphics. Hard drive gets 5.5, not that surprising given it's only 5400rpm.

Hope that answers a few questions people have about this laptop.

Not sure what to say about the screen.

I've got no stuck pixels, and as far as I can see no one colour is over saturated. I don't know how to tell if B+RG as it is described on the dell.co.uk website means RGB like the studio 16 XPS has. A post in another thread says that the studio 17 gets 92% of the adobe RGB gamut, whilst the studio 16 XPS gets 112%, but I don't know how to tell that.

I will say I'm glad I got the higher resolution as I think having only 900 vertical pixels would be too restricting. I'm mainly using it at the moment to do web stuff and some programming, and I like the extra height compared to the lower resolutions that are so common on laptops these days. Having said that it's not as good as the 1920*1200 of my 24 inch desktop.

Thx Breck. We may be able to compare this to the hardware ID of the RGB LED panel in the XPS 16.
I think any hope these (B+RG LED and RGB LED) are one and the same panel will be futile. :p

As far as the RGD LED on the XPS16 goes: a friend of mine (a photography enthousiast) has been looking all over for the best panel he could get (most priced above €500,- or $700,-), and came to the conclusion that the best option at this moment, measured by performance in color, would be buying a XPS16. To fully enjoy it you have to do some serious calibrating though.

For my personal use 92% gamut will be a great step upwards, as the majority of panels have a hard time showing 70-75% Adobe RGB gamut.

hey, Breck (or any other owner of 1080p screen), could you try and tell me how 1280*720 resolution looks on that screen compared to native 1920*1080? If you cant select 720p pls test some other lower resolution, i'd really appreciate it! I need to know if it remains sharp enough on lower resolutions...

It's fine at 1280*720, but of course is a bit fuzzier/softer than native. If I'd bought a laptop at 1280*720 and it was soft like that it would be going straight back, but considering its scaling its not too bad. I've only checked text i.e the forum, and a pdf that happened to be open. I suspect that if you were playing a fast game at that res you wouldn't really notice too much in the way of scaling artifacts.

Incidentally, I do like the multitouch features of the trackpad, for flicks, zooming etc. It works well, but then again, I have nothing to compare it to. No iPhone here.

Does the Studio 1745/47 also feature the chainlink design on the inside, like the palm-rests, as shown in this thread?

Yes, the chainlink pattern is still there, both on the lid and inside, just like that pic. I don't really notice it though, it's fairly inoffensive. The main difference compared to the older models as far as I can see is the little speaker grills in the front left and right corners. They are labelled JBL. They sound OK. It's amusing to see the "subwoofer" on the underneath though. How anything with a driver approx 1 inch in diameter be called a subwoofer is beyond me.

What is the general opinions in regards to the new 17 with i7, in retrospect of performance and heat dissipation. It is several hundreds of pounds cheaper than the XPS16 (i7), how does it compare in build quality, performance and handling heat? What are the main differences in design (excluding RGB LED feature)

No lcd really remains particularly sharp at lower resolutions (unless it's exactly 50% or 25%), and that's usually to low. But have you tried adjusting the dpi setting? It only has an "ok" effect on WindowsXP, but I read Windows Vista was a lot better, and it was a priority for Windows 7. All the font sizes go up, so everything is bigger without being blurry. IE8 automatically zooms the whole page more. Only photo editing programs still use the exact pixels for their pictures (their fonts, menus, etc are bigger though) but that's a good thing.

I only used it for a little bit before I had to return my last laptop with Windows 7, but it seemed to work well. That's what I'm planning on doing when I get my new one - the only reason I was willing to order such a small but high resolution screen.

    mine if finally here :D

    same here

but the black chainlink thing is not this extreme. i only see them when looking more carefully, at the first sight its nearly just black ^^

win 7 runs well and the screen is really awesome!
its quite a bit heavier then my old one, but that is a 3 years old 15" with about half the power of the 1747 so its no wonder XD
i'll try ubuntu the next days, for now i don't have the time

    but i have 2 problems:
    - when i got it i heared some strange noise from the inside when moving the laptop. i opened it and found a single screw flying around inside... i don't know where it belongs or whatever... i removed the screw and everything works fine (so its not a problem anymore, i hope...)
    - one of the grids which are on each of the speakers is not fully on its place... it is not 100% inside the gap where it belongs... :( maybe i will just crack it out and glue it on the right place (it is only glued it seems)

and to be honest, i don't like the touchpad... well, maybe i just need to get accustomed to it...

if anyone wants pictures, tests or whatever, just ask for it
but i don't have much time this weekend, so answers can take until next week

    ps: sorry for my bad english ^^;

Also, can you guys confirm that the Studio 17 is shipping with a 90w power supply? If so, it would seem to me that we will probably be having the same issues as the people with the Studio XPS 16, as it's mostly the same or very similar parts (with an even bigger screen). See this thread:

    http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=437800

If any of you can run the benchmarks and report your results that would be great.

There might be another option, but you may not like it.

In my trusty old Dell Inspiron 9300 I have a 1920x1200px panel. In the bios is a setting named 'LCD Panel Expansion' that turns ON/OFF expansion of the chosen resolution to fullscreen.

When it's set to OFF and I set the resolution for the panel to 1280x1024px it looks like this:

I guess if you start a game in fullscreen-mode on a lower resolution the panel will show the game in it's native resolution.
Result is a crispy sharp image, but smaller than you may like on your 17.3". :D

i played with it for quite a wile now and after a bunch of trouble, i now have a running ubuntu 9.10 on my 1747 ^^
ubuntu had problems with the wireless card and the graphic card but for both there are proprietary driver and now it works
the one remaining problem is that i don't have sound on ubuntu till now, but this will (hopefully) get fixed the next days. for now i don't have any more time

the laptop got quite a bit hot after a wile, direct under the touchpad. after a wile the touchpad got a bit warm too but i can live with that XD

the fan runs a bit the whole time, but it's not really noticeable. like a good fan should be (i think)
one time it happened and it got quite powerful for a while. that was noticeable, or even loud but it was only for 10 seconds or something. not a big deal in my opinion

what i really don't like are the F-keys (F1, F2, ...), they are reversed?!?!
when pressing [Fn] + [F2], you toogle F2, when pressing [F2] alone you switch the wireless-card on/off
i hope i can find a way around, this is absolute -.-
if anyone knows something, please let me know (maybe the same thing was on other dell notebooks too)

the touchpad is not bad, i just need to get accustomed with it. the only problem is that there is no space between the keys and the field so you sometimes touch the field when pressing a key...

ps: images will come the next days

in the BIOS is a selection to change the function buttons. Don't remember the exact setting but you will know it when you see it. Did it on my wife's Inspiron as she kept accidentally shutting off wifi and Bluetooth.

3 or 4 finger display? If you look closely, you'll see the guy is giving you the 1 finger display in the beginning of the video! lol

I wonder if the multitouch display works with applications not designed for a multitouch display? You know, like regular paint or photoshop, where touching the screen is like using the mouse?

It looks pretty cool, even if your display would end up with a lot of fingerprints on it. If I had known about it before I ordered, and it had come with the higher resolution screen, I would have ordered one myself (figuring that if the fingerprints were to much or it didn't work well, I could always just not use the touchscreen part and it would still work fine as a laptop).

Yes but its not standard (like it is with the studio xps). Customise your studio 1745/1747 and look for the keyboard section, you will see two options ordinary and backlit. In UK it costs £30 to upgrade to a backlit

XPS 16 has an option to pick up SSD at purchase and it has a somewhat better video card in ATI 4670. I suspect difference can be lessened with overclocking. XPS runs quite a bit hotter and is 1lb lighter. I would suspect better overall build quality as well. On the other hand Studio 17 can support 2 hard drives.

Overall I chose Studio 17 over XPS 16 (and Envy 15) because of much cooler temps (supposedly) and 2HD capability. Just got myself Studio 17 with 1080p screen, back-lit keyboard, and upgraded proc. Bing cashback also came through.

Actually there is. According to a member on the dutch forums, you can order the bluetooth card when ordering by phone.
Is suppose this is the same outside the Benelux.

Does anyone know which Bluetooth module fits into Studio 17 (370?) and if it's compatible with Intel 5300 card?

Just got my Core i7 Studio 17 today. I had to reorder because my first order on 9/23, the day it announced, fell into limbo somewhere. I reordered and got to get the 1080p resolution and Wireless N.

This device is nice. Quite fast. I took it out of the box, booted to a Windows 7 Ultimate DVD and reinstalled the OS immediately. With the exception of the wifi driver, I never used the CD of drivers. I installed all the updates right from Dell.com.

I have not benchmarked this thing yet but this baby purrs over my 2 year old 2.4Ghz Macbook Pro and I am pretty glad I got it.

Anyone want my old MBP? :)

On the one hand, my immediate reaction was "Goddamn, if only I could have waited..."

On the other hand, what it says about the touchscreen with 1080p display is that it's "in the works" "with no ETA". And that's not even in the main article (though mention of i7 is). I've spent the last year and a half waiting for USB3, which was "in the works" as well...don't really fancy waiting around for an option which may or may not actually show up, myself. :)

Nice, any pictures or videos you guys can take would help the rest of us waiting to get ours greatly! I have to wait till Jan. 1 :(.

What are your thoughts on the screen? And keep us posted on the battery life.
