Yes! They're going to unveil the XPS 1740! It's got a quad core Penryn, dual Geforce 9800GTXs, and an LED backlit screen in your choice of resolutions! Available immediately!

La la la! Whee! Okay, so it'll probably just be a $1200 eeePC equivalent :p (In all seriousness though, I am interested in what Dell can do in that space. If they could get one that was actually functional with XP, and cost $300, I'd consider it as a PDA replacement, I guess.)

There actually is a quad core notebook chip coming this month. I think it is around $1200 though.

The Dell E will start at $299. Not sure about XP for the base model as it only has a 4 GB SSD.

That would be neat, though Hyperthreaded Penryns arn't out yet! XD The mobile version of Nehalem will address that first.

Like atbnet said, my understanding is they are releasing a Penryn quad core soonish (SUPPOSEDLY soonish...). I might actually consider it even for the crazy inflated prices the "Extreme Edition" go for, as I've never wished I had fewer CPUs! At any rate it'll be a much better buy than the slightly faster dual cores they've been selling for that price so far.

I vaguely recall that it's going to be clocked at 2.6GHz, versus maybe 3 or 3.2 for the fastest dual core, and only bump up the power draw 10 watts...but I may be pulling these numbers out of thin air, can't remember...

That's great it starts at $300! It'll be interesting to see what it is. If my Palm TX gives out I would give that serious consideration (if I can just run XP on it and not have to mess with Linux...although a Dell Linux distribution might be interesting too).

Hey, if your patient enough... when Larrabee comes out, we'll be able to have 8 to 48 cores with graphics that rival Nvidia and ATI! I can imagine you WolfPup 2 years from now saying "I've never wished I had fewer than 48 cores!" lol. As funny as that may sound... its coming in 2009 or 2010.. so, its really not really too far off. ;) :)

All these cores are cool and all, but until the software catches up to actually use them it is just a pissing match.

theres alot of pages to look through, but from what i know is that there gonna be releasing them tomorrow. so how early will we be able to order one of these in canada and whats the average est cost? hopefully a decent setup for around 2500$ looking at the xps 1740 :), even if it is more, i will get it, just alot later though :( i also hope that we can upgrade it like the 1730. ie gfx and processor wise. i hope they look as good as they do now, just maybe a few hundred pounds lighter

He he! Larrabee looks really interesting. I'm not holding my breath that it'll really be competitive with Nvidia, but who knows. Very interesting even if it's not!

Having at least 2 CPUs makes Windows MUCH more responsive IMO, and I've got plenty of programs now that can use as many CPUs as you can give them. Even some games are starting to make better use of multiple CPUs (I guess Farcry 2 can use 8) :)

4...heck, even 3 sounds like a really nice number since you should always have a core that you can steal some CPU time from, even if some programs are hogging some of the other cores.

In case it wasn't clear (always hard to tell for sure on message boards! :) ) I was just joking about the 1740. That's just what I *want* them to announce tomorrow. And they could, I mean that's all hardware that's here or just about here, but I'm not holding my breath :(

I guess the only thing we know for sure tomorrow is a little sub notebook like Asus' eee thing. Which is sort of interesting, but not what I'm looking for right now!

yea im waiting and just picking up all of these different model names, as i would like a 1740 too, something with 9800GT SLI would be sweet, being able to upgrade to 9800M GTX later would be awesome too.

i hope they also drop the price of the older models if i dont like what new comes out

It is VERY unusual for Dell not to follow suit with Centrino 2 when half of its competitors have already shipped TONS of new models out to consumers already..

I mean there's not an ounce of 'leak' info.. Does Dell even HAVE centrino 2 rollout plans?!

Before the 1330 and 1530 we had tons of leaked pics ala Dell's tech but sheez this waiting game is getting me so mad @ them that I just might order the Sony Z before I go to sleep tonight! Argh lol

It's still basically the best notebook around. I just want them to throw in the new chipset, bump it to a 9800GTX (not that there's that huge of a difference I'm assuming), and put an LED backlight on there :(

i just wish that i could get a single 8800GTX on the 1730 then upgrade to SLI later. so since im writing this, does anyone know if we can have single 8800 instead of a single 8700?

Nope, you can only buy dual 8800GTXs. I wanted just one initially too, although I almost don't mind now after seeing some performance figures. IMO the 1730 is a great notebook, but only makes sense if you're buying it with 8800GTXs.

@ wolf - the problem was that its way too expensive to pay all at once, i woulda bought 1 8800 then upgraded later.

thats why i hoped the new ones would of come with 1 8800 or 9800GT

Really sad that the new 12" and 13,3" models only have VGA.
So I will have to continue waiting for a descent notebook. Perhaps the M1340 will save my day sometime...

How can this be a "brand consolidation"? They only just introduced "Studio" :p

I really hope they don't leave the high end stuff for Alienware. I don't want an Alienware, and IMO the XPS 1730 is AMAZING. Alienware took over half a year to try to match it, and it still doesn't seem as good to me.

In the article from the Register, the XPS will become a sub-brand. So Studio XPS will be the midrange notebooks.

    http://www.reghardware.co.uk/2008/08/13/dell_notebook_plans/

I think if nothing appears by September, or no leaks, I am just going to order an M1730 and the hell with it. I'm really tired of endless speculation and guessing what Dell is actually going to do.

Good grief, if they haven't updated it by September.... It's still a great notebook, and I'd buy it with today's specs...IF they'd just offer an LED backlight! I'd *PAY* them for the Studio 17's screen!

They *SHOULD* of course just bump up the chipset and FSB and throw in the successor GPU. Why is any of this so hard?

I'm wondering if this delay is related to Nvidia's GPUs? Maybe they had stuff ready to go, but all these systems rely on Nvidia of course, so...

Based on what I'm being told this is correct, in fact in some countrys and some documents I have seen the current XPS systems are actualy "Inspiron -XPS" and now they will be called "Studio-XPS"

Yeah, though why all other countries but not the USA where Dell is from? Kinda sketchy.

Regardless, it is kinda a turnoff since XPS is going to be split between Inspiron and Studio. If Dell wants to wait for full complete Montevina release with WiMax, they will not have anything till October.

You are much better off buying now than later. Chances are you may be getting the last of the real XPS line. Though HP just came out with their Elitebook series, so Dell may want to reconsider.

The Elite Books aren't actually released though I don't think. A quad core with one of those and an LED backlight would fit the bill, except I'm not sure if Quadro's can run Geforce drivers and just act like a Geforce.

No, but they are at the very least listed and pictured on HP's homepage. The surface looks similar to an XPS, but it has a black keyboard and for all we know... its probably illuminated. It may be the very successor to the XPS that we've been waiting for that Dell is now downing it to sub-par.

Hopefully HP's Elitebook announcement will get Dell to reconsider their plans for the XPS line.

Any idea if you can run Geforce drivers on a Quadro? I've never been clear on that.

I can't believe HP is releasing stuff sooner than Dell. Until recently Dell was ALWAYS first :(
