Is there anyone left besides Dell? It literally feels like they're in last place imo. They could atleast update the enthusiast line (XPS).

Add Montevina, SATA-II SSDs, Geforce 9 series/hybrid GPUs, DDR3 RAM, backlit keys, use these batteries instead (available now), implement the planned blu-ray drives, make Gigabit Ethernet and LED screens standard and call the M1330 refresh - the M1337.

It's not like they have that much stock left behind, do they?

Would be nice if it were. But, Engadget posted that very same picture way back in January as a leak:

    http://www.engadget.com/2008/01/14/leaked-dell-laptop-brings-the-sexy/

The Romanian website simply lifted Engadget's story and added the information found on that German XPS site. They are simply speculating, I think.

@BlitZX: Apple haven't announced Centrino 2 laptops either. But that is certainly not out of character as they tend to be among the last to update their products.

EDIT: OneHit beat me to the Apple mention!

Apple will probably release something in September with their new aluminum look. They aren't really on the cutting edge so it doesn't surprise me that they are a month or two behind the rest of the pack. However, Dell is competing with the other cutting edge notebook manufacturers and they need to get something out the door. I'm waiting damnit.

Okay then, second to last lol. All the other major manufacturers (Samsung, Acer, HP, Toshiba, Lenovo, Asus, Sony etc.) have released something.

Yep, that m1640 is a concept from ages ago.

Yeah I knew I had seen this design before, but not sure where. Then I saw the engadget watermark. I still hope it looks like that, it is pretty awesome.

I hope so too. But the 0.78" thickness is a worry - what kind of GPU would they be able to squeeze into it, and how will the thermal management be?

Perhaps I'm thinking too far ahead! :p

Montevina is supposed to reduce the overall size of the motherboard so maybe they found enough room to stick it all in there.

Something probably closer to a 15"s performance than a 17" notebook. Perhaps a 9700M GT or atleast a 9650M GS? We can only hope if they do make a 16.4" notebook.

Yeah it'll be a mid range GPU. I am not 100% sure they will have a next gen M17XX as it is mostly a gaming notebook and they are pushing that toward Alienware. So I am guessing it'll be the M1340 and the M1640.

I would not be surprised if Dell starts using more and more ATI instead of Nvidia.

Sony seems to do so too.

I'd like a refresh on it, but mostly I'd like an LED backlight on it (preferably with a lower resolution).

I'd buy that today if it were offered.

No, absolutely not. At best, if they used the exact same chassis, etc. you might be able to buy a whole new board, etc. for it but that would be extraordinarily expensive and not remotely worth the money.

And the new chipset isn't much of an upgrade for it. The real issue is that they may include a better GPU or new options (like LED backlighting) in a refresh.

The only thing stopping me from getting a 1730 is the lack of LED backlighting.

Spoke to a friend of a friend in Dell today who said he had no knowledge of New Dell laptops except E series machines.....and they usually get a "whiff" about 6 weeks before launch.

Take the info for what it is....I can't prove it either way!!

How high up in the company is your friend of a friend?
It seems there keeping this extra secretive
I'm thinking westcoast01 is right about them wanting collage students to buy out there extra stock
I've heard that they where supposed to say something today (Augest 4) But they didn't
I've also heard tomorrow but I wouldn't bet on it
But I'm still pretty confident on that Augest 26 release date for the 1340
    and a september 25 for the 1640
I don't think there going to make any other XPS's then that... (No 1740 or 1540)

The mid-August line seems to float around a bit too. Another person posted that a higher up they knew had given them that date. I'd hate for it to be in late September for the M1640 to drop, but that would be a nice birthday present to myself if that is when it is coming. But most of all, I'd just like a date and some pictures. I wish Dell would just say, hey guys we know you are waiting, we aren't ready yet but here is what we plan to bring you.

    Ugh. That is scary.

Yeah, but we really don't care about the full platform, just the chipset...and actually we don't care much about that, just any updates that they stick in at the same time (new GPUs, etc.)

Dang, if Dell puts the Studio 17 back on sale I might bite since I've got a 5% off coupon now. If they'd just stick an LED backlit screen on the 1730 I'd be happy-just let me use the Studio 17's screen and it would be my ideal notebook!

Nothing useful. That's just the chipsets with Intel's integrated graphics. And frankly, if you're buying something with integrated graphics you shouldn't care if you have the newest CPU/chipset revision or something 3 models back.

It's the Chipset (Montevina), the Core 2 Duo processor, and Intel wireless card. Intel doesn't have the full set out yet because the wireless has been delayed by the FCC.

It's not even the wireless card; the 5300 is shipping now. It's the Wi-Max card that's being delayed by FCC.

@atbnet: What are you including as the "full" package? Thew new Sony laptops are shipping with WiFi Link 5100 and the X4500. At the launch on July 14, Intel actually said that they were already shipping the integrated chipset. The initial delay from June was due to the FCC certification for WiFi and technical problems with the X4500. I believe the only thing missing is the WiMax.

The first Sony laptops shipped with the Atheros wireless chipset. The ones with the Intel wireless haven't shipped yet. The Centrino 2 package is the chipset, C2D and wireless. If you want the complete Intel setup you'd count the integrated graphics, also not shipping yet.

Its the successor to the 8700 and is designed for 17 inch notebooks because of power consumption savings. Its not too big of an increase and is still more or less a high end mid-range card.

@Forte: The ASUS G50V carries the 9700M GT and it is a 15.4" laptop. I think we might actually see the 9700M GT in more 15.4" units, since Nvidia has other, higher-end cards that can show up in 17" units.

But what is it exactly? The 9500GS is apparently an 8600GT with DDR2 RAM...so what's the mobile 9600GT or 9700GT?

I assume the mobile 9800GTX is basically an 8800GTX (ie basically an 8800GT).

Yeah, I believe its because since Montevina consumes less power and is 25% smaller than santa rosa, some manufacturers see no reason to not stick it in.

How can it be so quite? So near a release (at least we all hope so), someone should have leaked something more than the latitude E-series.
Perhaps there won't be anything more for a couple of months?
