not very hard at all.... the replacement part is only $24.99 when I got a spare black lid. Takes about an hour or so going very slowly and paying attention. Or rip through it in about 10 minutes and pray it works when it's back together!

Those are actually pretty cool looking cases.

It still tops out at 16GB on the drives, though.

    hey all,

so im new to netbooks, right now i use a xps 1730, but i won a dell mini 9 from an online raffle and it comes with 512 ram, and the 1.6atom processor, i was wondering how does windows xp perform with 512 ram nowadays? i havent even used a pc this weak in a long time. i basically have one gripe with linux and that is that one of my favorite programs, (oovoo) doesnt work on linux yet...

but yea is performance on xp any good with 512 ram and this processor? i want to at least be able to keep my browser, my office suite, and a music app going at the same time, and i kno linux would def be able to do all this, but nowadays windows programs are getting pretty bloated.

Here's a little tidbit of info. Seems BIOS A02 has enabled F11 and F12.

    Fn-Z is now F11 and Fn-X is F12.

This works in Ubuntu as well as XP, since it's a BIOS update.

Considering the Dell install of Linux lags with the 512, I'm willing to bet that the XP machines are worse. I suppose I could be wrong, but I can tell you my machine runs smoother with a gig than it did with 512.

There's a very good chance that you aren't going to be very pleased with the multitasking abilities of the Mini 9. You are going to find that the less you do, the better.

aha! no more keyboard remapping! I never did mine anyway.

It just didn't make sense to me all the whining over the F11 key to make IE go full screen when you just click on the options menu and whoa! There it is, Full Screen! just click it!

    :D

But, very cool that they put this in there!!!

Really, I don't use function keys anyway. Whether a computer has them, or not, is irrelevant to me.

How are you feeling about your paint job, now that the real deal is out?

I ran Sisoft Sandra and it said my Mini 9's max installable memory is 1GB. I am running the bloatware infested XP SP-3 Home edition. Will I be able to upgrade it to use the full 2GB or do I need XP Pro on the laptop, or is Sandra reporting false info?

about the only function key I use regularly is F4 to close stuff with alt+F4.

Still happy with the paint job... It's got a textured grippy finish to it so I like it. I do like the cherry red from dell, but it's still glossy and I would be constantly cleaning it like I did the black!

I may order a cherry LCD cover through spare parts though... :D

honestly I think there are better choices in the 9 netbook like the Acer or Asus. I was disappointed in the dell in their choices. I guess if you want red or other colors Dell is good in the netbook. Personally I like everything to be black so dells color options don't matter to me.

I didn't even see the option for red in my EPP Dell ordering page. Since my Studio 15 is black (like a Dark Trooper), I found it fitting that the Mini 9 would be glossy white being the little sister of the Studio 15. Again, the glossy white reminds me of Stormtrooper/Clone Trooper armor so it's all good. :)

same here.... still black and white only in my EPP site.

I think it's like that just to make Cin' wait longer. It's been a couple months Cin', a few more days won't hurt! By the time they appear on the EPP site, the red will be backordered!!! :D

Cin' keep calling, maybe you'll get a CSR with half a brain that can put an order in for the Red. Cmarcho is right about the backordered though.

If Cmarcho would to paint a lid Yellow, would Dell follow up with this color choice a couple of days later? Prolly

Since Cmarcho obviously has some kind of influence over Dell's decisions I wish he could just make a custom BIOS that will allow to boot from the SD card or at least claim too. Then maybe Dell would follow up with this often requested feature. :)

no no no backorder...hee hee...I want my *red*....still continuing to be nice and patient? Can't you tell! :p :D ;)

Now to get them up on the EPP site! :D

OH I hope by the time they go on the EPP site there is no backorder

*crosses fingers* :D I'm sure once I get it, it will be well worth the wait!

My son has an Inspiron Mini 9 (XP). We made sure that he is unable to access our home wireless network (ours has WPA with a password that he is not privy to) but I have now discovered that he is able to get online via some in range unprotected wireless setup .

Is there a (relatively) simple way for *me* to disable *just* his wireless i.e. so he, without my intervention, is still able to use any other feature of this laptop.

Yes. Unscrew the back plate, (2 screws) and remove the wifi card (2 more screws and unplug the antenna).

That's what I would do. No doubt that he would get online anywhere now!

For anyone who doesn't want colours and thinks that the original black/white versions are too garish the Vostro A90 is now available:

    http://www1.euro.dell.com/content/p...-a90?c=uk&cs=ukbsdt1&l=en&s=bsd&~tab=specstab
    http://www.liliputing.com/2008/11/dell-vostro-a90-hits-europe-paints-the-town-black.html

Lilipiting is wrong about the price: Because it's a 'business machine' the price doesn't include VAT (like sales tax) it's actually the same price as the Mini and has a lower spec.... So it doesn't have a lot going for it, unless you're a Goth!
