I slapped XP on mine last week, just to see if I was missing out on anything.

I kept it on there long enough to install all of my software and Windows updates, and play with it for a few hours. Now, I'm back with Ubuntu.

I'm no Linux guy, but Dell's version of Ubuntu is way more suited for netbook use than XP. Admittedly, I'm not adding any software to the machine, though. If I was looking for my Mini 9 to be a primary machine, I may think otherwise.

Hey Mick! So your liking Ubuntu then!
I will try out XP for a bit, see how it works..and go from there! ;)

Hoping it gets shipped today! (hoping) ...I called Automated Status, still states *build*stage..but now its not giving me the ESD, like it normally does.

So, I'm hoping thats it moving to the shipping stage or the *status* is about to get updated! ;) Per email confirmation from my rep...it's gonna ship today! We shall see about that. :D

If I paid for XP, I'd be inclined to use it because I had shelled out the cash.

Because I had no financial investment, I was able to try both without having any real stake in either. I choose to use Ubuntu, and I have hardly any Linux experience. For this machine, and the other netbooks I've bought, the Linux installs are tailored to the machine. Because of this, the machines are easier to use with Linux.

XP is what it is, which is good, but it wasn't made for netbooks.

    I know you can too.

You know you can try Ubuntu without even installing it on your machine by running it of a live CD or memory stick; that way if you don't like it you can go back to the way everything was before. Even easier on your XPS as it has a CD drive :)

Isn't this just lovely... :(  I'm sorry your going thru this..and now so am I...What I don't like is when I receive an e-mail from my rep *confirming it's gonna ship today* after I ask whats going on....Then get a Order Delay Email..that its not shipping until 12/19, now. Bah. :(

This was after he told me *all was in order*, by e-mail. :(

I don't mind it being delayed, I think...but when you tell someone that all is *stet*....Be 100% on that. I would never do that to my clients ever.

I really needed the netbook this week. :(

XP Home is running perfectly fine on my Mini which has 2GB RAM and 16GB SSD. No problems at all so far.

Also I received that $3.96 sleeve today. Well worth the price. The I9 fits in it perfectly.

The keyboard is small and takes some getting used to at first. But for my needs it works just fine. If I have to type a long paper or report I would use my desktop computer anyway. So it really doesnt matter to me.
More than the keyboard though, the main thing I've never been used to using is a touchpad. I still prefer using a mouse, and the wireless bluetooth mouse on the mini solves that for me.

Sorry to hear yours got delayed. I would assume its due to the Red color, since ours were both ordered on the same day and mine was black and shipped early?

I know this wasn't directed at me, but I thought it may interest you.

Out of the blue, two days ago, I noticed that I'm not thinking about my typing at all anymore. I'm typing just as a I would on a normal keyboard, at close to my normal speed, even using apostrophes.

At this point, I'd say I'm completely accustomed to the I9's, admittedly, unorthodox keyboard.

That's great it's all good for you! :D

Yeah, I'm not sure whats going on...I'm feisty enough right now that I'm on the phone with Dell about to give them an earful. (pain meds) lol.

I'm sure it's because of the red color, though. My rep basically told me he thinks I should have it before Xmas...

That's good news..it's cool that you were able to get used to fairly quickly.

Oh my new ESD is 12/19/08..*Dell is overburdened with orders, and I should be patient* is what I was just told. They are having troubles fulfilling all the orders. LMAO.

Just chiming in here... My primary purpose on these forums is to hover over the Toughbook section all day long since Toughbooks are superior to all of your Dells! I'm KIDDING THOUGH! lol... anyways:

My girlfriend just traded in her Toshiba Tecra A4-S211, which was too big for everyday internet usage for a Mini 9 and SHE LOVES IT (And I love it too!!!)... anyways she got the 16GB model (the 32GB ones wern't available at the time... she got the black one with 1GB RAM/1.6 Atom/WIFI, Camera, & Bluetooth. 16GB obviously wasn't enough so I got her a 16GB SD card for $26 shipped from Newegg. Only one complaint I have (she doesn't care) is that the write times on these SS Drives ARE GOD AWFUL! It took almost 5 hours to copy 5.6GB worth of pictures to the hard drive from an external 80GB USB 2.0 drive... I know it's this machine and not the external drive because it only took 35 minutes on her old machine to copy to the machine!

    That's all!

    Rob chiming out

You're right. The write times on the SSD are super slow.

I plan on replacing mine at some point.

Just an FYI -- I was liking my Mini keyboard except for the placement of the apostrophe and on the MyDellMini site someone discovered there was an alternate keyboard. A guy with a business account ordered for some of us and mine arrive today. After playing with it some, I think I like the original keyboard is better. The new one (US International) is good; the number keys are better aligned, many keys that required a fn key sequence have their own keys, and the apostrophe is where it is supposed to be. However, the backspace is smaller, as are most of the keys, and the right shift key is back in the horrible placement as on the Eee. I think I'll go back to the original and remap the apostrophe to where the semicolon is. A lot of people are excited about the new option though and I couldn't resist trying it.

Wow. That keyboard is a lot different. They made every letter key on the home row smaller.

I can see how some people would like this setup better, but I think I'd rather have the original keyboard. I've been down that tiny key path, with the 701 Eee. It just doesn't work for me. I can live with the poor placement of one key.

There is some kind of a delay with mini's ordered around Thanksgiving. Mine was supposed to ship today but didn't. I called customer support and they said it would ship on Dec. 19th but couldn't guarantee. I eventually decided just to cancel the red mini--I'll just buy a red one later when they show up on eBay.

Anyway, I went over to the Dell outlet and got a white one way cheaper with the same specs: 1 GB ram, 16 GB hard drive, 1.3 web cam and as a bonus it came with Bluetooth. I've really come to like Bluetooth on my Dell Studio since you don't need some kind of USB anntenna for a wireless mouse. I think I got a very good deal and hopefully this one will ship on Monday as promised.

So, no cherry red mini for me know but I'll get one after Xmas.

That is the same thing that happened to me...I really wanted it this week..to have for some stuff going on next week :(

I'm glad you were able to find something you liked at the Outlet... ;)

For me, I think I will wait it out a few more days..til I decide exactly what to do.

Thing is, I feel that Dell should've been prepared for the potential *over abundance of orders*, once more colors choices were released....another Dell *fail* I will forgive. :(

Yeah...I was really feisty over the whole delay last night (I blame it on pain meds) ..

But I'm much better today, I've realized its out of my hands ~ and it's up to Dell to step up to the plate and provide some really good customer service. Meaning, they need to find a way to compensate for their not being able to keep things in stock! When they know full well that with the holiday season upon them, people are going to order lots of notebooks. It's not that hard to figure out. :D ;)

So..practicing patience is once again what I am doing! ;)

I received one of the International keyboards Tuesday afternoon. I installed it, and it is a bit more to adjust to the smaller keys, but the apostrophe, backslash and other keys are where I expect them to it makes it a much better experience to type for me.

    I like it so far!

I ordered a mini last Thur and have read this entire thread learning quite a bit over the last 2 days. I was not going to register but after following Cin' waiting patiently for the Red mini then to see her order delayed I had to register just to say Hang in there Cin'! :D

Mine is scheduled to ship Tuesday 12/16 and arrive Thur 12/18. From what I gather here if I get it before next Friday I will be very pleased but I have a feeling I will be lucky if I get it before Christmas

What is really odd is that some are shipping early. I just found a guy on the mini forum that had his ship date as the 10th and he received it on the 9th!

Seems hit or miss, I hope mine is a hit!

Yes..I think it is a hit or miss with Dell lately :( I had an almost hour long conversation with the *supposed* Customer Service Manager today..and in the end the conversation went nowhere. He just talked in circles about the problems going on with the I9's right now....

Did you get yours with XP or Ubuntu?

    Cin ;) :)
