I got a feeling its the black leather thats delaying orders. We'll find out next week and see if mine progress to the boxing stage. If it does, then its the black leather for sure.

    @Tenax :

You have ordered with black leather too ?

Mine is still with an ESD of 12/09 and a EDD of 12/10 but you begin to frighten me...

If it's really a problem I can cancel the leather or switch of color, it's not a real problem for me..

I seen the little leather strip on a 1640 at best buy...i think it just snaps on...
ya really think there is a leather shortage too? Maybe people need to start eating more beef so dell has extra leather for their lappys :0

We all expected ours laptops with an EDD of 12/09.

Yeah, my original EDD was 12/2/2009 and the delay notice I got was on 12/2/2009 which it now says 12/9/2009. I'm hoping that if this were going to be delayed until January, I would have found out on Dec 2nd when the original delay came in. /fingers crossed.

    My specs are:
    Intel CoreTM i7-820QM (1.73 - 3.06 GHz 8M/8 threads)
    8GB, DDR3, 1333MHz 2 Dimm
Premium FHD WLED Display, Obsidian Black, 2.0 MP Webcam
ATI Mobility RADEON HD 4670 1GB
500GB 7200RPM Free Fall SensorSeagate Hard Drive
Obsidian Black High Gloss Finish with Leather XPS 1645
Intel WiFi Link 5300 802.11AGN Half Mini Card

I have ordered the same one, instead of 8GB I have 6.

And yes I've already touch the leather by myself on a XPS1640 (not 45 :p) and it's not very amazing, it looks like a poor leather, so yes if I can cancel it to increase the speed of my order, I will do it certainly.

It shouldn't take that long dude. I ordered on oct 3th and EDD got changed twice and was getting very close to january. But on dec 3th it shipped.

2 Months :s, though they decided to add some kind of compensation and they chopped 300 dls out of my original price.

I have the leather too. Didn't even order it. Sales guy just added it on. Ironically, I was going to change it to without leather early on, but didn't want to since they had to cancel and reorder. Didn't want it to get delayed. Hah.

Well, theres no evidence as of yet that leather is causing the delay. I was speculating based on my previous order with leather that was stuck in pre-production, and my new order without leather going into production within 2 days. But even if it is the leather, I'm pretty sure they'll get new stock soon.

    Folks,

I am looking into ordering a XPS Studio 16 w/ i7 in the next couple of days. I haven't read this entire thread. I am wondering if someone can help with the following:

    * I've gone thru the customization wizard, and on the summary page, the LAN adapter is listed as 10/100. Is this just a mistake? I would expect this to support gigabit lan.

    * Can anyone post a link to the 130W power adapter I need to order to avoid the throttling issue when plugged in?

    * Are there any coupon codes or known way to get a discount on this system?

    Thanks for the help.

    Warrer3,
Thanks. we are getting closer..your a few days behind me.

    Bigcat400,
It is 10/100/1000. look here and click on the side views pictures
The adapter of choice is a Dell PA-4E AC adapter. Seeing how you are just ordering if i was you i would wait a bit to see if dell comes up with a solution.

I know of no deals, i just used the best one i found on dells site...if your a student, dell gives you a discount...if you call in your order.

How did you get a hold of a resolution specialist? It takes like 20 calls into Dell in order to talk to someone who can actually help.

I called up my sales person and asked for a manager or a resolution specialist. Then I called back into sales into the Alienware sales, had the dude build me a comparable mx15. Explained my problem (should I cancel and get the Alienware?) He promised to get me a resolution specialist. A few days later one of the two came through. Not sure if it was from my sales guy or from Alienware, but it worked.

Just out of curiosity, I ordered mine on the Dell website.

Are people getting anywhere by calling and complaining? Are they seeing actual results?

I am at that time where I may start to call and hound people but I don't want to sit on hold if it's really useless...

hey bigcat400, on your 820qm its 8MB Cache not 6MB Cache.
    6 is for the 720
that is a dell misprint for sure.

MrAceXPS, just call and say your a little concerned about the status of your order making the EDD. i was in pre-production for ever...i called..1 week later im boxing....coincidence? maybe.

I ordered a dell through Visa on NOV 31. Pretty much maxed out my credit card then. Today I was checking out my online backing and my credit limit was not maxed out anymore, it subtracted the sum of the laptop. I called my credit card company and they told me that they didn't get a charge from dell, and no one claimed the money.

This is strange because I have been in production stage since the day I bought my laptop. Would dell build a computer if they didn't have the payments cleared? Or is it the system's fault of telling me I am "in production" when I am really not.

I think they actually charge you when the system is ready to ship [their so called invoice date - important since you have 21 days from that date to return]. They initially only check to make sure you have credit on your card. I'm not sure why they don't hold the money on the card throughout.

YEah, Dell will just make sure the method of payment is valid.

Once it ships, then they actually charge the card.

I think that purchases made with non-Dell Financial Services Credit Cards move faster through the system.

Don't ask me why, but I think that is the case. With Dell Fin Serv, there seems to be a prolonged "processing" time for the order. I have had experiences in the past where DFS causes delays, sometimes they decide to verify address history out of the blue. Had two orders cancelled once because I cancelled and re-ordered so many times in a 72 hour period (I made three changes to my orders) that I triggered some type of fraud flag. DFS in turn decided to send a letter of identity confirmation to whatever address was in my credit report, not on my account. Yeah... They sent it to an old address that was so old there was no forwarding. What a nightmare.

As for the tracking systems for orders, they have been misleading.

I recall about 4 years ago I was caught up in the whole Dell XPS Desktop fiasco where they had a cooling problem and people were waiting months for their orders. I think it was that specific customer backlash that caused Dell to completely reconfigure their community forums to filter out posts that are not technical in nature.

In that case my order sat and sat and sat, then in one day went from Processing all the way to Shipped. You could actually log into the system on the web and see the order go into kitting, build, testing, etc., hour over hour.

I think that sometimes the order system is like USPS tracking. Sometimes I ship a package through USPS and I see no tracking activity, then the package arrives and all of the sudden all of this detailed tracking activity shows up.

It's quite annoying. I can tell you this, changing and canceling orders gets you on some list because it seems to slow things down considerably.

I myself was tempted to cancel my order and instead a order a basic studio laptop and a desktop. I didnt' get any educational discount on my XPS 16, I paid about $2300 for it plus tax, so I could easily break that up into two systems. At this point I am just waiting.

What stinks is that Dell typically does not alert you to a delay until your EDD hits, then all of the sudden you get that email... That's just rude. Too many people ordered their systems around some personal timeline. Before the start of school, a vacation, a move, whatever.

All of my other systems are Apple and I never have these amateur issues.

Unfortunately, it was my Dell Fin Serv credit account that made this purchase possible so I am not likely to say "the heck with it" and go get something else.

I will also say that when you do receive the Dell product, it's typically a good one and very impressive.

But -- the Dell customer service is total crap. Case in point, I just spent an hour on the phone waiting on hold to check my order status. I waited for 15 - 20 minutes to speak to the first guy, who was nice enough and did speak English fairly well. After looking up my order he asked if all I was calling for was to check on status. I said yes and that I was concerned about possible delays. He said he would need to transfer me to a special concerns department. He transfers me and I go into another hold queue. I sit on hold for 20 minutes only to hear a recorded message at 8pm EST tell me that their hold queue is now full and that they will need to request I call back on another day during whatever hours. Then I get disconnected. That was totally rude!!! I am sitting there on hold and because they hit their closing time they just kick you out of the hold.

There is my rant. Dell really does suck at customer service, but they typically build a good system.

    Oh well....

Why spend 2 hours trying to get a hold of a rep for order status?

Get the most up-to-date, detailed status:

    800-283-2210
    Options 3, 2, 1, 1

    For US customers only.

If you use the 433 number it isn't the detailed status (no boxing, testing, etc). So use the 283 number.

    Current Order Status: (Ordered 11/13)
...on Support: In Production (EDD of 12/9)
...on My Account: In production (EDD of N/A)
...on Order Status: In Production (EDD of 12/9)
...via 1-800-433-9014: "Currently being processed" (EDD of 12/9)
...via 1-800-283-2210 3,2,1,1: "In production in the build stage" (EDD of 12/8)

All Dell had to say to me when I called was "Yes, your EDD may be delayed. We'll keep you updated." and I wouldn't be so worried about not making the date...

    Pre-production - 11/13
    In-Production - 12/2

After I have mailed my SR, he changed my order (without my agreement but we'll see the result) and move it to another order number.

    He told me that :

First, I didn't understand because I didn't talk about the i7 processor... So why is he talking me about it ?

    Then he told me :

And, to finish, he told me what he's doing to increase the speed of my order :
Now when I call the order status line, she told me that my order is being process and I have to talk with my sales representative for more details.

Well, if all this stuff can help me and give me my order faster, I'll send a gift to this SR !!

My original order date is : 11/2
And the original EDD was : 12/10 ... now only Dell knows (humm not sure !)

    Ok. I've just call him.

He told me that there is part shortage with the i7 820QM, so this is why a lot of you, ordered after me, have already their system.

He splits my order in two (the bluetooth headset and the laptop) to avoid another delay due to the accessory. Now my EDD is 01/07 but he told me that I'll have it before it, by the end of the month or sooner because i'm in high priority.

Well I have no choice than wait...

Ok, so I ordered mine on the 1st December and it's being delivered in two days (9th). Surely that's got to be some kind of record?

I have some developments on my case. Pooter3 and Warrer3, we may all be on the same boat so you might be interested.

I checked a few days ago and saw that my EDD was updated for the 4th time to next year (1/4/07). I was so livid that I sent a scathing email to my sales folks and in a moment of inspiration copied [email protected] asking him if he will explain to my family why they will not get their Christmas present until January - lol. More on this later. After a long night soul-searching I considered cancelling and ordering an HP Envy. The comparable configuration was more expensive then the DELL so it gave me pause. Yesterday, I decided to call my sales rep but got somebody else who I think has been the most honest and most helpful DELL guy I ever got since the beginning of his fiasco. He told me that my original configuration had no less than 3 parts missing - HD, 7i processor and something else he could not see. He said the only thing he can do at this point is cancel and re-build with a configuration that has been shipping on time. Please don't ask me what the differences are as I have not time to do a line by line comparison with my old config yet. He was able to knock off some $$$ from my old config and threw in a messenger bag. AND the new EDD is still better than my old stillborn config. I have no idea if this new config will not be delayed but I have a feeling it will considering some of the lighting fast orders weve been seeing lately.

Oh, apparently if you copy Michael Dell, it will trigger some escalation process because, I received an email and voice mail from an "escalation executive". I talked to the guy and peeled off a couple layers of his skin. Yeah he was useless but I felt a bit better - lol.

P.S. If you ordered one with Vista as I did because it was so long ago, might as well order with Windows 7.

Below is my old config for your reference and hope you guys have better luck:
