so can anyone pin point what the delay has been caused by? And why some people are getting their systems faster than others?

If I get a major delay again, I may consider just getting a 1640 and forget about the i7.

What did you do to get your order expedited? Did you ask for a resolution specialist? I would really like my order before xmas, and if there is such a thing like expedited, I would want to make use of it.

Well, I'm not counting my laptops before the cookie crumbles. While I'm excited I'm in boxing...that's the furthest I've gotten so far...it doesn't mean too much yet. People have been stuck in boxing for a long time. My ESD is today, but when I call the number, it stopped giving me an EDD. Just says I'm in boxing and that's all the info it can give. Hopefully it'll still ship today, but I doubt it. Realistically, it probably won't ship for another week. There's also a chance I'll be stuck in boxing for 3 weeks too.

For those who asked, to get a resolution specialist, I called up the sales team I ordered from, explained my plight, and the girl I talked to got ahold of one. He was busy (it was black Friday) and they said he'd contact me by Monday. I also called up again, talked to an Alienware sales team (I was considering canceling and buying an m15x, explained my situation to them and they talked to a RS as well, who said they'd call by Monday. On Monday, one of the two called me back and got me out of pre-production. So it seemed to have worked.

I see lots of people still ordering this laptop and excited about getting one. I ordered mine couple of days back. I am very concerned about the power issue that is being discussed in the other thread and other places. So I was thinking of calling and trying to cancel until that issue is resolved. But reading here, it seems a lot of people are not really concerned  .

I guess I am not sure they'll be able to provide a fix with a bios update. What if it is a hardware issue? Anyway, not sure what to do.

I've been so concerned with just getting the goddamn thing I haven't really thought about it. I'll worry about it when it comes, I suppose.

If I was in your position though, I might do a bit more research before I buy.

I finally got mine a few days ago after 2 months of hassle! After updating the BIOS and all the drivers I was still having trouble (painful lag and sound popping) playing left for dead 2 among other 3D intensive games. Long story short I found that I have to dim the screen to get it to play without painful lag while it is plugged in and in "laptop form". So yes, it is underpowered if you are wanting to use everything at max. From my experience and what I have read http://en.community.dell.com/forums/t/19306277.aspx I believe that a higher voltage plug would fix this issue but I don't think it is a good idea. It will just get hotter and increase the chance of early failure.

All issues aside this is a sweet laptop! Last night I ran it through my 40'' 1080p TV using the HDMI, then turned off the laptops display and it eats whatever I put on it in high settings at 1080p.

    Current Order Status: (Ordered 11/13)
...on Support: In Production (EDD of 12/9)
...on My Account: In production (EDD of N/A)
...on Order Status: In Production (EDD of 12/9)
...via 1-800-433-9014: "Currently being processed" (EDD of 12/9)
...via 1-800-283-2210 3,2,1,1: "In production in the boxing stage" (EDD of "that's all the information I have right now")

pooter03, we appear to be in a similar situation. Technically the 283-2210 number had my EDD of today, but everyone else says 12/9. I think I'll call up and ask, but at the same time, this is the furthest this laptop has ever gotten and I don't want anything to get messed up :)

    Ordered 12/2
    ESD 12/23
    EDD 12/30

Called to cancel twice, but they wouldn't as it was in the production stage. 2nd time I called, they said the unit was built, tested and on its way to the states.

Called today and it was in the Boxing Stage.

Hopefully it proceeds quickly through this stage and it will ship out soon, beating even my original shipping date of 12/23.

Woot....my status is now in "Delivery Preparation" when i checked this morning on the website. Would this be considered the Boxing stage and what does this mean?

I ordered my laptop on NOV 30th so i was pleasantly surprised of how fast production went.

Im located in Canada so that number doesn't work for me.

I called Dell customer service this morning however and they said my xps 1645 has been shipped as of this morning. They gave me a tracking number and everything. Dell website still haven't been updated I guess since it still shows my status as delivery preparation.

It'll usually take a week for the package to get to Canada through customs and everything so I have a EDD of 12/14. Nontheless I am pretty satisfied with the process only taking about 2 weeks for my laptop to reach me after my order date. I was really spooked out about some of the horror stories I've heard.

    Order date: Nov 30
    Item shipped: December 8
    EDD: December 14

I also ordered back in October (Oct 13th - damn that unlucky number), and according to the 283 number I'm now in the boxing stage. I've heard people claim theirs was sent from Nashville. If so, I live down the street from there and sure wish I could just swing by after work. Still, given the troubles Dell has experienced with delivering this laptop I'm not going to count my own chickens until it's sitting on my front door step.

EDIT: By the way, it is now 5pm CST on Dec 8th and my EDD is still 12/10. So it better move from boxing to shipped pretty soon. Getting nervous.

My brother in law wanted a quote on the Dell Zino, so I used that opportunity to ask the sales guy what the status was on my 1645. Said it was in transit, which sounds promising.

I called the 800 number and mine says that it's in the boxing stage. According to the EDD it should arrive tomorrow. This is after a one week delay from the original EDD. On the website it still says "In Production". I sure hope it ships today!

Mine is in the boxing stage and the phone line says the estimated ship date is 12/23. How long can it possibly take to go through the production line to put it in a box, add whatever CD/DVD discs and paperwork, and hand it over to FedEx?

Does boxing stage start when it leave Malaysia, and then they put it on a boat ride over to the states? I don't see how there is any possible reason why this couldn't even ship by Friday 12/11.

Anybody have any knowledge on the process? I assume they air-freight them to the states, but maybe I'm wrong.

Pooter I am right there with you. Mine still says In Production on website and In Boxing Stage on the phone. My EDD still says tomorrow and I'm not feeling good about it.

While I'm not dependent on this laptop (my livelihood doesn't depend on it), and no my world isn't going to collapse if I get it later than expected, I feel I'm going to cancel if my order gets delayed. I really feel that Dell is treating me and plenty of others like total crap. We've seen reports of people ordering well after we did and they have already received their machines. And the amount of frustration that they are causing is really unhealthy, at least for me. I feel so completely and utterly disappointed in Dell and really wish I had someone there who actually gave a crap. Someone who would truly understand the frustration that comes from having to wait 2 months through numerous delays and cancellations. It'd almost be better if they'd just come out earlier and said "you probably won't get this before the end of the year." At least then, if I decided to stay I wouldn't be frustrated.

I was frustrated a few weeks back, but I've come to terms with it. Every week since the first cancellation (11/9) I've been pricing out similarly specced laptops...15-16 inches, 1080P screen, Core i7, blu ray, 2 year accidental damage. I paid about $1800 after tax. Nothing has come close so far. The Envy is much more expensive and doesn't have an optical drive. To get the Asus close in price, I'd have to give up blu-ray and I'd get a worst battery life. The Alienware m15x doesn't have HDMI out (a dealbreaker). The HP dv6t quad is cheaper but has a much worst screen.

Hell, when I priced out the 1640 with a core 2, it still came out more expensive.

If something better comes along for near the same price, I'll cancel and get that. If not, I'll wait. I think now that it is in boxing stage, it should be shipping any day now. (I was told it was in transit last night) In the meantime, I got Dell to give me a free Logitech wireless keyboard and mouse. Not as good as what others got, but I needed it so what the hell. :)

I tried to cancel twice but was unable to. I ordered with 20% Bing cashback, and after cashback with taxes, I will end up paying $1670.

I originally was going to cancel and buy an ASUS G51J-A1 on eBay with the 20% cashback, but good thing I didn't because I didn't realize at the time the Bing cashback is limited to $200 when buying on eBay so the maximum benefit tops at on purchases of $1000.

I was just hoping to save the taxes and get the same 20% Bing CB. Also, the ASUS is pre-built, so I would have got it right away.

Now looking at comparable units to what I ordered, everything else is more expensive. The HP dv8t was similarly spec'd just before I ordered the Dell for $899, but that thing is a beast. I don't want anything bigger than 16" screen. I think I will just stick it out unless something really smokin comes along before Christmas.

Well, just got off the phone with Customer Disservice Rep and was told that yes my order has been delayed once again. My new EDD is 12/16. I guess my problem is that I have no sympathy for Dell. I didn't think they were new to this whole manufacturing thing. I figured they would have their act together and be able to give reliable estimates. These aren't estimates. They just tack on an extra week and hand you a pair of dice. That said, I am torn - do I want the laptop bad enough that I will reward this -poor excuse for a company with my money? Can one person cancelling their order out of frustration really send a message to Dell?

Well, as an example, Dell sold something like 43 million units in 2008. We aren't going to make a difference. :)

However, if this trend continues of poor customer support, poor shipping, poor tech support, etc they may pull a Packard Bell and do a nose dive.

The level of unprofessionalism from Dell customer service is unbelievable. It has to be right there with the worst. I’ve called twice today to cancel my order. The first time, the rep took all my data fine, order#, etc. But when I said I was calling to cancel, she said she couldn’t hear me well and we had a bad connection, asked to try again later and simply hung up.

So I called again and waited my 15 mins on hold, a guy took all my information fine, etc. When I told him I was calling to cancel, he said all systems were down and told me to call again after 3 hours. I guess I shut down the systems with the first call.

    It’s just unbelievable.

If they are not responding to cancellation request, you have a case for unauthorized charges and breach of contract against dell [I'm not talking about a legal case, but a credit card dispute]. Send dell a email and letter stating that you have attempted to cancel, and the agents did not respond, and that any charges from dell to the credit card is unauthorized and will be deemed as fraudulent charges. Then state you want to cease any further business with dell, and wnat all your accounts closed. They will respond to this message. And keep a copy for your credit card company.

Also, whenever an agent says to call back later, tell the agent this is my only call to dell, and I expect you or dell to cancel the order whenever the systems come back on. Mention that you are not at the leisure of making multiple calls to dell for this issue. Once you call, the burden is on dell to cancel your order, systems down or up. Tell them to do it manually if they have to.

Well, I figured I would call for status again today, and it says it has SHIPPED. It is being transferred to the carrier and tracking number will be available soon!

Guess my Christmas present to myself is coming early. Wasn't originally expecting it until 12/30.

Well mine has been splitted in two parts and reordered on monday with high priority for the two parts and free next business day ship.
The second part (the bluetooth stereo headset) with an EDD of 12/16 is currently transfered to the carrier and ready to be shipped according the 2210 phone line.
The first part (the xps) has already skipped the stage Order processing and Pre-production to be In Production this morning (no more details on which stage is available). Edd still on 01/06

Well is still faster than the first order! I hope i'll have it soon.
