gaah:
You can request 1 set of backup disks for your system here:
http://support.dell.com/support/top...ackupcd_form?c=us&cs=19&l=en&s=dhs&redirect=1
Hope this helps.
-
No, these aren't available for download at all. Dell left them off the disc and never posted them on the web. These are just the drivers for the hardware component, not a licensed piece of software. I spoke with a technician and he is forwarding the information to another department to handle. If anyone will post the driver package that came preinstall, that would be nice. It's not software specific to your order or license, it's the same software package for everyone so it's not like piracy or something that can effect your use of the software yourself. Just drivers.
Edit: It might actually be a separate CD of special software from Creative Labs that has the disc with a CD key. Gosh darn it. -
Gaah, a few people in the other SXPS 16 threads had to request a separate disc from Dell...and apparently it took many calls before they could find someone who could send them the software. Try searching the 1640 threads to see what department they ended up getting help from.

Thanks for finding this info and posting your experiences guys! -
well, I figured I'd add my 2 cents to this thread as well.
ordered from Dell Canada:
I ordered my notebook on Nov 4/09
EDD: 12/03/09
on Nov 5/09 it was cancelled and reordered(I recieved no email this had happened, I just saw it when logging into dell.ca)
new EDD: 12/04/09
haven't heard a peep since, and Dell Canada can't call that special automated number line to get the current status of your order, so I'm left in the dark... if it doesn't arrive within a week of that date I'll be canceling and maybe going to an HP DV7-3080ca with an i7 in it. Even though it'll be hard to have to give up the $1000 off I got on this, but even with that discount, the HP is MUCH cheaper(with no bluray or SSD drive of course)

Quick tip for all those who are having issues getting a single point of contact.
If you are looking for someone local (country), and have had an ordered created without being contacted. Call dell customer service, ask for notifications department, then accuse the second order of possibly being fraudulent, since an order was placed as your customer id, and payment authorization transferred, without your direct consent, You can request the name, extension, and email the rep who placed the order, and their manager (this is usually both sales people). Usually calling the manager you will get "i can not handle order issues", and redirect you to a "Customer Experience Sales Support" person they frequently have to transfer order issues to.
Also, keep in mind dell is legally required to contact you on any delay (reorder or back-ordered part) and you have the option to cancel your order. Not notifying you of this (which the email has a cancel phone # at the bottom) is a big no-no. Point that out to the rep as well. -
Hey guys,
Just to contribute to this discussion. I ordered XPS1645 core i7 on 12th Oct.
This order was subsequently cancelled two weeks later, by the production department. When I discovered (no email to tell me), I re-booked the order. As I paid by cc, no auto re-order, as they don't keep the cc info (apparently).
First thing I noticed, no 802.11n card anymore. Second order ETA 23/11, was cancelled again by Dell on 5th Nov. Dell wouldn't tell why, but on a close scrutiny there is no longer a bluetooth option on Dell's website (UK).
At no point the order gone beyond pre-production phase.
Therefore I suspect that they might be struggling with compatibility issues of core i7 and wireless-n and bluetooth.
I'm now considering plaing an order for the components separately and sticking it in manually myself.
Though, the feeling is of an absolute disappointment with Dell. -
Well my order has shipped, no tracking info yet though.
Original order date: Sept 25
Original EDD: Oct 26
Canceled/Reordered with good wifi: Oct 29
New EDD: Nov 30
Shipped: Nov 15
This information probably doesn't help many people but it is a good sign that if your order has the "good wifi" number, then it will slowly, but eventually ship...so be patient as I was. It has been a long 7 weeks...
Btw boxing stage for me took 6 days. -
My order shipped yesterday as well, I updated my info on the first page of this thread.
However, my FedEx tracking info shows a blank destination and my Dell order status still has "N/A" for Bill To and Ship To. (Though I was billed)
Seems odd that the destination is blank but I haven't gotten a package through FedEx in quite a while.
My package should be here Monday though. -
-
EDD 26th Nov (Dell UK).
Getting one to replace my Asus N10J, which in hindsight was a poor buy - should have just gone with a proper laptop in the firstplace. Having said that, at the time, wasn't sure I'd use one. -
Having to call Dell, here is the news
Order date : 11/2/2009
EDD : 12/15/2009
Revised EDD: 12/10/2009
new EDD : 12/4/2009
Status online "In Production"(since the 11/2) and on phone line "currently being process"
Does anyone can explain me what is the difference between these two status ?
And it's weird because nobody here has mentioned this status "currently being process" on the phone line.
Thanks. -
Is this the first time you've called the number? And it said it was being processed? My order (both of them) was in processing for two days at the most. That's when they put a temporary charge on your credit card. You should call Dell and ask why it's still being processed. The order status line (at least the one you have to go through prompts to get to) tends to be more up to date and specific than the online page.
-
I'll write an email to my Dell SR and ask him what is my order status and if it still on schedule.
EDIT : Oh and they had already put a temporary charge on my credit card, about 1 week and half ago. Then the charge has been removed. -
I got the "currently being processed". IMO, this is just as In Production.
-
Ordered 10/9, canceled and reordered with the correct part 11/9. ESD is 12/8. The status line still says in Pre-production. It is kinda infuriating.
-
Warrer3 check out the sticky (which was in the thread above this thread) for details on Dell's various stages...

so i ordered the 1640 core2duo with p8600 in october. got the laptop 3 weeks later, then after i have it a week or so the core i7 pops onto the site. so i call dell, and tell them, when i ordered this, and i asked the rep when quad core i7 is available. he said after christmas. imagine my surprise when i saw it appear a week or so after i got my unit. so i explained that, and they put through a new order, at teh same price. so then i figured, since im gonna have this lappy for years to come i hope, i better future proof it. so they sent me a return receipt, and im gonna send this one back, now that the other has been shipped.

My Location: Vancouver B.C. Canada
Updates: the email says its been shipped, but site still says in prodeuction 1 hour later. that normal. also, i just have edd, not ship date, nor does it say if its in boxing etc. is this cause im dell.ca?
update2: now it says delivery preparation, but when i click it, it says in production. dare i believe? is it really on its way. ^-^
update3: whoa nelly! 05/11/2009 Delivery Preparation 07/12/2009
P.S., dell has been awesome about this, i use this computer for work, so i didnt want to send it back of course. but, he did say, keep it for 10 days, when the system undoes the refund, after 10 days, call back, hell redo it so i will be computerless for a shorter period fo time. sure enough, i got a call saying the return expired, called the rep, he sent me another return shipping label, and now that the i7 is shipped, ill send this back.
oh, and ill share this for the lulz. so i call them up when i saw the i7, was talking to a supervisor. i say, hey, i was told quad core didnt come to studio xps until after christmas. he says "who told you i7 is quad core" i was like, "umm, Intel, wikipedia, and the whole web" so i start to read out various url's and he says, "oh you are right sir, i have that information now." heh
THANKS DELL.
NEW INFO: 18/11/2009 , purolator just called me, and said they will be here friday with my i7 w00t. -

Order Canceled: Oct 31th
New Order Placed: NOV 3th
New EDD: DEC 3
Order Status: SHIPPED!!!! (Yesterday 16:15)
My Location: Quebec (Canada)
Notes: Never went to boxing stage. My order should now be delivered by the end of this week! That's 2 weeks before my 2nd EDD (But 2 weeks after my first EDD) -
Anyone know how long this stuff usually takes to arrive? never ordered a Dell before... is it UPS style next-day delivery? I haven't heard of the delivery company either. -
As I ordered mine on Nov 4th, with 256GB SSD, Bluray burner, 6GB RAM, but just the regular WLED. And also the Merlot Red case(I thought this might delay it).
But it SHIPPED!! As of 1:02am today! coming by Purolator ground from the states up to Canada, so should be here in a couple of days! -
You guys are lucky
, I ordered on october 3rd and as of now, not even a hint that my order is being boxed or even finished. Anyone know an extension where it would be more likely to get a compensation for my time lost? Like a coupon for dell store?
-
I'm waiting on a "regular" system + RGBLED + BluRay-ROM, DVD-RW -
Any of you quick-shippers have RGB-LED screens? Some one mentioned that it was on backorder earlier...
would make me feel a lot better knowing that they were leaving the gates too. -
nope, regular WLED for me.
it does seem like that is the problem... -
-
Well I have given up on getting the 1645. It has been a week and a half since I first spoke with them about getting my order fixed and all that managed to do was get my original order from the beginning of October canceled without a replacement. Two recent email messages to the person assigned to me from the escalation department have gone unanswered.
I am sure the 1645 is a good system and a wish everyone the best of luck with theirs, but Dells communication and lack of action during my order process has been extremely poor to say the least. If they can't be responsive when I am trying to give them almost $2k, I can't imagine that they will be worth much if I ever have a warranty issue. I see no reason to spend my money with them and will certainly not recommend them to anyone else. -
Well, Dell managed to mess up again...
Even though they shipped it, I worked from home today to make sure I'd get the package... Well FedEx stopped outside, then drove off.
I called their support, apparently Dell was one digit off on the address... They said they'll try to make it yet today but it might not be till 7 or so and they can't guarantee it... Which really stinks because I called and got ahold of them within 10 minutes!
I am definitely writing a complaint on Dell. And yes, I confirmed the address on my account and the order I placed were correct. (And if they weren't my billing shouldn't have gone through as I used the same address to ship to)
EDIT: Luckily the FedEx courier came back a couple hours later, so I now have my XPS 1645! It's very nice looking, better than it looked in pictures. I have the 15.6" 900P WLED screen, it's very nice. I don't see how anyone could use 1080P but good for those who can, I'm just glad I choose the 900P.
I did a 3DMARK06 on it and got 8086. Now I'm installing Windows 7 Pro. (I'm using a retail copy I bought, and the laptop came with Vista HP on it... Will order the Win 7 HP upgrade probably for my other computer) -
Order date 29/09
First ESD 31/10
ESD delay 06/11
ESD delay 13/11
canceled re-ordered 10/11
new ESD 07/12
Not a single email for any of that. I only know because my OCD forces me to check all the time. But I digress... Normally I don't mind the wait if I am given some heads up with an actual reason. So, I have started in with the Email's and that went no where. Moments ago I got off the phone with a rep and was told that "Dell as a company dose not give out any form of compensation!" After reading the posts, I know this to be a lie and I am really frustrated with the way Dell treats people. This is the first time I have ever ordered anything from Dell and it will be the last!
That feels better. Sorry I needed to rant a bit. -
Here is some news from my Sales Representative about the status of my order :
So I wrote him an email to know more about my status order (reordered on 2/11, EDD 10/12 online 4/12 on phoneline)
Then I asked him if there is still a problem with my credit card or anything else that could cause a delay (because the credit card was the reason of the reorder):
Finally, I asked him why so far? why on 9th december? Because if I order now on the Dell website, the EDD (and not shipping !) is 7/12, so why i'm longer than it?
-
Here's a wonderful update to my order...
Order date: 10/20
First EDD: 11/16
First Call: 11/9 - Assured would ship
Delayed: 11/10
Second Call: 11/10 - Dell unsure why the cancellation, but expedited new order
Second EDD: 12/4
Third Call: 11/16 - Just checking status
Told by Order Modification that first order was canceled due to failed parts and that they expedited my order and gave me Next Day Shipping.
Then he shared with me that my new order has a 15 day delay due to parts not in stock and assured me that order would arrive no later than 12/4.
I wonder if HP is this bad? -
-
Maybe its just Dell US?
-
This is good, aside from the color, you have exactly the same order I do. I ordered Black Onyx so I'd assume that it is in stock since it's the "default" color.
So if everything is on track, the planets align, etc. I just might have my shipment some time next week! Maybe on thursday-friday as they gave me overnight shipping.
We'll see though.... -
I just want to add to this for the benefit of the UK customers.
I've been glued to this thread and the previous one for over 2 weeks now, desperately wanting to order but scared that i'll have any one of the numerous problems listed.
I have now ordered and have a EDD of 24/11/09, my order is in production.
The only changes I had were the RGBLED screen (red leather), and Blu ray ROM drive.
Also can anyone help me out with why the very same coloured notebook sleeve in the same size is a different price depending on what notebook you choose to buy, the price almost doubles on the xps compared to the new studio 17?
Although i'm glad that my order seems to be on track and in good time, i'm furious at dell for a misprepresentative advert showing me a price almost as good as the US prices you guys are getting, but they refused to honour it.
And even more so, for the way they are treating loyal and in many cases repeat customers, and with no actual reason given!
I wish all you guys the best of luck with deliveries, and please hold out hope for mine. -
lol....yeah, just check the invoice (on your order status screen with all the specs on it) and it's the Waybill number.
~Ibrahim~ -
Everyone that has ordered in the last week or 2 and has already received their laptops. Can you please post your order number? Dell is saying that the problem with the computers is a base shortage, which is total BS considering people are getting these laptops shipped even after ordering after I ordered.
So please, to help us all out, post your order number (ONLY IF YOU HAVE RECIEVED YOUR LAPTOP) so we can use it as collateral to get through the DELL BS with the reps. -
Siphen,
Did they tell you there is another delay? I think you ordered a day or two before I did. Mine is supposed to ship on Nov 18th and they told me today that everything was on schedule, but I am still in the "Build Stage". -
i placed mine on 05/11/2009 and its been shipped already =D i820qm, ssd, bluray
-
They put me on hold for 2 min to look at the order before they lied about me having called before and that another rep had helped me. I started all this buy working with 2 us managers that take care of the computer ordering in Dell and the company I work for. They haven't gotten back to me yet but the puppet on the other end of the phone just gave me the "the part will arrive in 7 days" crap.
My order still shows a Edd of the 18th but just says in the build stage. The manager I started working with told me the order Has not even started being built and was awe struck about that and the fact that it's supposed to be shipped tomorrow. This coming from a Dell manager that takes over 1000+ computer orders from us a year -
Funny I got a call back from a rep tonight asking if I would give them a chance to meet or beat the deal offered to me by HP. He promised to give it the top attention of management. Apparently the top attention of management that I was promised last week wasn't the very tippy top. I politely declined.
I also received an email tonight from a team manager at Americas Customer Care. He apologized for the delay giving the excuse that the i7 process just came out and they wanted to get everything correct for their customers and that my order was cancelled due to an "illegal" configuration. Not sure what could be illegal about it? Now that I am out of it, it is pretty comical. I feel for the folks that are still dealing with it.
BTW, my HP order is scheduled to ship next Friday already and it has that troublesome i7 processor that is giving Dell fits. -
OK, weird. My laptop was supposed to be expedited but it's not, gonna call my resolution specialist tomorrow and ask. I originally ordered Nov. 2nd, but after a few errors on Dell's part, I re-ordered my exchange on the 5th, and it "shipped" on the 6th. Still "In Production" is all dell.ca and CS reps can give me, and apparently "there is a high chance I'll get it before Dec. 7". They'd better hope so, if I have to wait over a month then I swear Dell's going to pay BIG TIME.
-
The majority of the purchases seen on this forum have been 1 month+
Mine was 7 weeks. There's really nothing you can do to make them pay big time if they can't get it to you within a "reasonable" time. -
Ordered On: 10/22/09
Model info: Merlot Red/ XPS 1645/ RGBLED BLU-RAY 1.6 6GB etc.
Estimated Ship Date: 11/16/09
Called: 11/13/09 (spoke to rep. said it is delayed a week)
Called 11/16/09 as I see order cancelled, re-ordered with correct wifi card
New EDD: 12/14/09
They said it was wifi issue, order 'expedited' but wouldn't guarantee jack. I think it is simply wifi mess up, order to the back of the queue. For those asking about HP, I CFO with them in 07, took 2 weeks, no delay.
My Location: Canada (but having it sent to US address, cheaper build/better options - stupid .ca didn't have same options as .com)
Some real mess, I should be upgraded with 8MB and 3.0 processor. Calling does nothing, subservient Mexican or Indian 'deflector reps' are polite, friendly, robotic and useless - they have no power to affect change. I'll try the email route to the 1st world and see.
XPS best out there, would cancel only no better options, will be first/last with Dell most likely - sooner I go MAC the better. -
I was trying to use the automated phone service, but I wasn't paying attention to the numbers that I was pressing and I got a human person on the phone by accident. She took my order number and put me on hold for about five minutes. She asked me a second time when I placed my order and I told her Oct 28th. She seemed surprised and concerned that my order was not getting ready to ship. I asked her if she thinks it will ship on 18 Nov and she politely said that that is what the building team is saying, but she did expedite my order and she said she assigned a supervisor to investigate my order and that person will call me tomorrow with a better update.
-
you guys after all of this still let them feed you these lines of bull? why not call them out on it? I finally just sent an email to [email protected] linking to this thread, the old thread, and attached a copy of my cell phone call records to dell showing 8 hours on the phone. When a rep called me regarding my e-mail, he confessed everything about the problem to me as there was no bullting left possible.
I've also filed a grievance with the BBB asking for a $200 compensation for the cell phone overage bill I received. We'll see how it goes.
Call them up. Tell them you are done listening to their lies. Tell them you are filing a BBB complaint. Link them to these threads. Ask them to look up the old wifi card part number and make sure you GET THE NAMES OF EVERY PERSON YOU TALK TO BEFORE YOU BEING DIGGING IN. They are much less likely to bull you and disconnect you if you specifically ask for their name, and operator ID number.
