I went to see oceans 13 and during the heist they use the current XPS M1710 which is rather cool but dont use any of the LEDS.

Note Book (NB) and Desktop (DT) would make sense, though it doesn't really tell us anything about the machine's capabilities, except overheating faster in direct sunlight perhaps.

I'm not sure if this has already been confirmed or not...but I spoke with a Dell representative today about the new release. While he was extremely reserved with his comments, he did confirm that the release will in fact take place on June 26th. So for those about to purchase a laptop, may as well wait a couple weeks to see what Dell has to offer.

Machine capabilities match the inspirons pretty much exactly spec for spec.

hm, it'd be helpful if we had a little more specific data. Only if the Vostro/Inspiron came with a 8600M GT would the new line of notebooks be interesting. Otherwise, if it's only the GS then there'd be not all that much incentive.

Well I'd say based on all we know about the 1520 so far, save the price, it appears we will be quite disappointed. Ugly, fat, and heavier, none of the extra ports people hoped for, new and less user-friendly keyboard layout.....etc.

yes, exactly. Unless it offers a very good price and spectacular hardware (which appears unlikely) there seems no point.

Yeah, they are mighty ugly. Dell need to get with the times. I ordered a T61 yesterday. Will order another laptop before August. Hopefully dell will have something appealling by then. IF not, maybe a Macbook Pro.(Never owned one) or Compal.

    I'm completely confused here...

-The 1720 REMOVES the DVI port? My understanding is some Sony's include an HDMI port instead, and an HDMI -> DVI adapter, which I guess would work fine. But no digital connection at all?

-And one of the DIMM slots isn't user accessible?!?
Is the hard drive still user accessible at least? That's the most important part for me.

I don't know. I was pretty excited when I started reading this thread...but no DVI? I plan on using my notebook mostly hooked to an external monitor, and I do notice a difference between VGA and DVI.

I think they *look* fine. I mean they're not Apple or Sony, but I'll take price and function over looks any day. I'm just concerned by the lack of DVI, plus whether or not hard drives and RAM are still user accessible.

Yes it has been confirmed on the release dates.... I have been posting them all over this thread. I just got access to the Vostro specs but wasn't at work long enough to check the specs.. sorry... I can't remember the exact release date... It is in the second week of July though.... I will see if I can get the dates. And yes the Vostro's are all black. they are also going to have a desktop line just like the inspiron line coming out in a couple days. They looked simular equiped as the inspirons.

I read the engadget post and forget about the hybrid drives. Dell will have an option for a hybrid drive. It will have built in turbo cache to cut down access times and so forth. They are also going to have a full flash memory bassed HDD. It will be nonvolitile memory and will have less read/write time then the conventional HDD. Plus no moving part to worry about the heads crashing. I don't know if they will have that on the inspiron line but they will have it on the latitude line.

EXCELLENT! Thanks! That drive is really important to me. The RAM sounds mildly annoying, but if Dell considers it user accessible, that's all I care about (and that's not as critical to me as the drive anyway).

Do you know if they've really removed DVI out for all models? I plan on hooking up my notebook to an external monitor most of the time (at work anyway).

Thanks. I appreciate the info. Personally I think going with a DVI port that can also do VGA (like the Macbook Pro) would make more sense if you're only going to have one port.

Other than that, these sound about perfect to me. I don't know though. I'm staring at that screen all day, and do notice a difference between a DVI and VGA connection. I'm not sure I want to give that up (plus I'm out of VGA connections anyway-have other systems hooked to those).

Thanks for the update - let us know the specs on the Vostro when you get them. It will be interesting to see which GPU goes in there. If they are not different enough from the Inspiron line then I wonder what their purpose is...

Vostro specs are the exact same as the inspiron specs that have been leaked. You can virtually sit the specs side by side and not know the difference. YoJr can confirm that for you whenever he gets the chance. Vostro is just a more business looking inspiron. Exact same chassis just All Black. Once again this goes for both NB and DT. Virtually no difference in hardware. Vostro will have the option to come as a "Clean System" with no trial software and demos.

I believe the Vostro will just replace the Inspiron line on the business sites and Inspirons will become Home and Home Office Only. <-- No confirmation on this.

Understood - thanks for the info. So... if I were looking for the next XPS 1710 - the Vostro line would not be it. Ok - I wonder when we'll finally get the info (official or leaked) on this new baby.

Dell Discontinues Inspiron E1405 Notebook and Inspiron 640m Notebook w/ 14.1″ Screen

Dell Home has discontinued the Inspiron E1405 Notebook and Dell Small Business has discontinued the Inspiron 640m Notebook. Both had a 14.1″ screen. If you want a 14.1″ screen, the only alternative in Dell Home is the Inspiron 1501 Notebook. Dell Small Business has the 1501 and a few Latitude models also have the 14.1″ screen.

Will Dell have incorporated a built-in mic this time?

I was SO close to ordering a 6400 a month ago. Had a hard time getting over that they lacked web cam, IrDA (need it for my pulse watch) and microphone. I was helping a friend with her 1505 this spring and was very surprised to see that there was no built-in mic.

I just wished they would make matte screens in the WUXGA rez.
This is ultimately why i'm holding out on buying anything. I love the screen on my i8200..1600x1200..just perfect..

Yep, Dell has taken the 1405 off the site. This is the first stage of introducing the new ones. I thought they were going to overlap them but apparently not. The 1420 gets release two days after the 15, and 17 so keep an eye out. The 1420 though has never been a money maker for them any way. they were only a $100 USD below a 1505 so most people upgraded the screen. Most of the people that I supported had the 1505. I saw the 1505 and 1705's more then the 1405. They will never get rid of the 14" line permanatly though. They sell enough to warrant the line.

To answer nikasp, there is not built in mic but there is a built in camara. I still think it is weird that Dell will not include one. this is a big selling point when you have the intergraded mic so the customer doesn't have to carry a seperate one.

And as for the Vostro's, I will be back at work tomorrow but from what I have seen so far, it appears that pogiboi is on the right track. They look really simular. Since my dept hasn't seen them they will be for business. (I deal with Home and home office customers) I will check the specs but usually they are a little different like the latitudes. they are close but have subtle differences. the business line uses more standard components so after the warranty is up the business can still find parts for them. (that are not neccassarily Dell) [if that makes sense]

The 14" screen on the 1501 would be pointless though. It's still the same size notebook, and the 14" screen only saves you $10

I still can't believe they removed DVI! This is 2007 for crying out loud. I've had DVI on every computer I've built/bought since literally 2000.

Yeah, really. I wish more companies would do like Apple and offer a DVI port (or HDMI would be fine), and if you want analog, you can use an adapter.

Any idea on whether the e1705 will still be available for a few days after the e1520 and e1720 release? With the 8600 GT the new models are suddenly looking a lot better, but I don't know if the price will!

Yeah, really. If you're only going to offer one port, why would you make it VGA, at least on a high-end notebook?

I'm sort of torn, given that in performance the current models are actually as good for games-DX 9 anyway-and they have that DVI port.

I've heard a lot of blue screen problems with the current models though. I'm not sure Dell ever really addressed it.

Similar dilemma - if the price is fairly close I'd go with the new ones so I could use DirectX 10 if I needed to (wouldn't have if 8600 GT hadn't been an option), as well as the NumPad, but if the cost difference is excessive I'd get the 1705 - hopefully there'll be some indication of price before release.

Thanks for the info YoJr! Hmm... very annoying that you will have to carry separate mic around. I use voice chat quite a lot and like using the computer as a speakerphone while working or surfing.

Well, with the new machines I will not have to carry a separate webcam and IrDA dongle AND a mic anyway.

Based upon the photo copied here ( http://www.engadget.com/photos/pics-and-specs-of-dells-new-inspirons-1/274130/), #14 sure looks like stereo mics.

Any idea what those holes could be otherwise?

I can't believe why so many laptops don't have DVI (Zepto, BTO, Toshiba and now Dell too on their high end models). Alot of people hook those laptops up to big TFTs and DVI does make a difference then.

I thought Toshiba did have DVI on their high-end models? I know their models that ship with the 7900GTX have it.

Sony's switched to HDMI, but my understanding is you just use an adapter and it works just like a normal DVI port (?)

I just checked a preview of their new 17" system with the 8700GT GPU and can't find DVI on it, just normal VGA.

HDMI can easily be converted to DVI, so that's fine too (I believe the Asus G1S and Acer 5920 have only HDMI, no DVI)

is the 1520 a newer version of the 6400/1505???
the inspiron 1520 also has NVIDIA GeForce 8400M GS 128MB graphic, is this a good graphic for non-hardcore gamers? run rainbow six vegas smoothly on low-med range graphic?

and wut might the price range be for the 1520??
