On the disc you can see big description:
>>For use only as an upgrade to a qualifying Dell Windows 7 Upgrade Option PC.<<
On the COA you can see description:
>>Win Vista....-Win 7 .... UPG Fullfill, and below:
DELL<<
This means:
- this Dell installation DVD is only for Dell computer, it can't be used on the other brand
- this key shouldn't work on retail installation DVD - it should work only with Dell DVD (anybody confirm ?).
- even if installation would work (Dell COA key->other brand PC), it will be illegal from MS point of view because it is only for Dell computer.
- if you will install it on the another Dell computer, but not coming with this upgrade (not under Upgrade Option policy) - it will work, but still will be illegal, from MS point of view. (I know people have done this and it is working if his Dell has BIOS with SLIC 2.1<-whatever it is)
So. I think you could use it, but you've been warned![]()

I wonder if I'll be able to install this on my older Dell desktop instead of my laptop, the machine it's intended for.
-
In theory, it should be possible if your desktop is also a qualifying machine (ie. It has a slic 2.1 BIOS). Not sure about the legalities of it though. OEM OS' are generally only for the PC that they shipped with. One hit wonders. I think the license ties the software to the motherboard so you can change everything in your pc other than the motherboard and it's ok. Technically if you change the board, it's a new PC in MS' eyes and thus you need a new license.
I think. -
Frobius,
That would then mean that the keys being issued are SLP keys, and probably all the same. Why then are people in this thread reporting different keys? -
Wow... my estimated ship date still shows the 29th of october... i ordered on the 22nd, and a couple of days ago the status showed 'ordered' but then that disappeared too... this is getting ridiculous. With no tracking info i don't know which day i should wait at home...
... having paid a £15 delivery charge on this 'free' upgrade i expected better service. Dell needs to get its act together... -
Ordered also appeared and dissapeared in 24hours... -
-
well this is garbage. Mine was supposed to ship on the 29th. Now it's the 2nd and no sign on my upgrade kit. I live in Washington. When should I contact dell?
-
My stated as shipped, the courier service does not contact me at all, they cannot find me, they just cancel the order. This is what happen to me, and I cannot call them or do anything, I will have to reorder again and wait for 2 freaking weeks again. GOSH!!!
And Dell reply me they do not know what is going to happen to the disk that the courier is holding. -
Ah now my estimated shipping date has disappeared and my status is now ordered! What is going on dell!!
-
just checked the website and now the status shows 'ordered' again... but will probably disappear soon...
but now the estimated ship date has disappeared... what's next, the entire website disappearing and dell denying its entire existance?
this (and past issues) has now completely put me off from buying from dell -

Heya,
I just registered because I think this is the only thread on the Internet that actually discusses the Dell Upgrade.
I ordered my upgrade on the 22nd October, when Windows 7 launched.
I waited a few days, and had an estimated ship date of 28/10/2009.
Now it ALSO HAS BEEN REMOVED AND ALL I HAVE IS A BLANK estimated ship date, and status as "Ordered"
I email Dell asking them is going on.
Im expecting the same "Keep checking the website" reply as I got before.
I also called Dell and Microsoft and Dell told me "Its not in our hands, its Microsoft", and Microsoft told me "7-14 working days"
god this is going to be a very long process I suspect.
Pic of the order page:
Im in the UK btw, and paid £15 "shipping" -
I'm completely unimpressed by this process. Why can't they just email a product key and a link to an ISO download?
-
I suspect that dell has ran out of disks and is now waiting on Microsoft to send them some more hence why we are waiting.
-
It is completely rediculous
-
So alexiako, when you called Dell which number did you use? I'm going to give them a ring.
-
I dont know the number im afraid
But chances are, they will just tell you to call Microsoft. I have already spoken twice to Dell about this -
Dells customer service is one of the worst (worst is taltalk) i have dealt with. I personally wouldnt want to go through that hassle.
-
).
I wouldn't mind but all I really need is the key as I already have a Win7 disk from a retail package for my other machine. Gotta say that I agree that £15 for this kind of "service" is a joke. If it was free I wouldn't be too bothered, but it's not, so Dell should be handling this much better.
Looks like I'll have to stick with Vista on my M6400 for a few more days/weeks/months/years. I'm in the UK as well btw -
Today I sent them this email. Still awaiting a reply:
-
BTW I have same "status" as you guys now. Moreover, I had date of shipment 30.10.09 and now it dissapeared (anyway I never received email with confirmation that was really shipped)
K. -
I received my copy of Windows 7 and the order status hadn't updated or anything. The website doesn't really tell you much, so just keep checking your mail every day.
-
The website is actually worse than there being no website at all, as it misinforms you about your order status. They should either fix it or take it down...
-
My status has changed to ordered today. Previously things kept changing and the est. ship date was 29th but today it seems to have remained as ordered for more than 5 hours and est.ship date has been removed. Even though my order was placed on 21st I haven't received anything.
Keeping my fingers crossed. -
My status has also gone to "Ordered". My estimated ship date was 10/29/09! What the hell is going on?
-
Be patient guys. There's no point complaining here. They won't hear it.
-
Same here "Ordered" is my status too. Plus my Estimated Ship Date has gone, maybe preparing for dispatch...
-
p.s. i'm not having a go at you chew. i understand your point... everything is just so frustrating with dell. -
My estimated shipping date is now the 15th November!!!!! Not impressed.
-
Mine's just been updated to 18 November. I think that when I do speak to them, and I'll try to speak to someone senior, I'll point them in the direction of this thread.
-
mine's now the 15th of november too...
Should have just gone for the £30 student deal direct from Microsoft instead of the £15 'free upgrade' from dell. -
Yep. Mine is now 18/11/2009
Dammit Dell!!!!!!!!!!!!!! -
Mine too, 11/18/2009, For those with Delays what ver or Versions are you waiting for - perhaps there is a one version that is in short supply. Mine has Ulimate 32 and Pro 64....
-
Mine is Ultimate 64.
-
Dammit. My shipping has also moved to 11/15/2009. I'm waiting for the 32 bit version. Garbage!
-
mine was home pre 32
-
pro 32bit and home 64bit here. And I don't have any date till now.
BTW Ordered 22-10. I think they're changing data now, so for few hours all new data will appear on the page.
I would not be surprised many users will use some copy of Dell reinstall (preinstalled, so without serial needed) soon, instead upgrade, which is appearing, disapperaing and nobody knows when it will arrive. Shame.
K. -
Check again- Mine just changed to shipped with tracking- Last night blank, this morning the 18th. Now Shipped- Ok ... Ill take it
-
Is the site down for anyone else? Or is it just me?
-
LOL. Just received email it was shipped. Crazy. Now website is showing tracking number. At least.
-
The order confirmation from Dell claims that refunds are not possible; however, in consumer contracts like this one, the seller cannot 'contract out' of their obligation by telling you they don't do refunds. Foreign companies that operate in the UK are still subject to these regulations.
I haven't heard of anyone trying to cancel their order, so I don't know how much of a fight Dell would put up if you cancelled. If they refused your cancellation request (unlikely, I think) or took longer than a couple of weeks to give you your money back, you could just ask your credit card company to reverse the charges, giving Dell's non-compliance with the Distance Selling Regulations as your reason. It would also be advisable report them to the OFT.
My order was supposed to be sent today, so I'm still holding out hope! -
but does that still apply if the goods are technically 'free' and some companies state they will not refund delivery charges even if they refund the product.
-
Mine has shipped with UPS tracking.
Ships with Expedited service so 2-5working days for delivery ... 3days for the UK it seems with other posters on the thread...
Do UPS re-attempt delivery as I won't be in on Friday this week, if so how many times? -
It's a good point though, as Dell might claim that this isn't technically a purchase, since the price charged for the upgrade discs themselves is £0. You could argue that the £15 for shipping includes a 'stealth charge' for the cost of the discs, since it's a rather a lot to charge each of us for a bulk mailing of hundreds or thousands of these discs to Europe. I don't think they'd be bothered to fight you about it, really. -
-
I think the website is an absolute joke. I was one of the first to register for the upgrade back on 27th June 2009, one of the first to formalise my order on the 22nd October 2009, and yet I was given an initial estimated ship date of 11/15/2009. Then it suddenly jumped to 10/31/2009 for a few days, which I thought was great until that date passed by with no more updates or emails telling me it had shipped. Then, yesterday, my estimated ship date disappeared altogether, but the status then shown as 'Ordered'. I thought this might have meant they were preparing to dispatch, yet I log on again just now and the ship date is back to the original 11/15/2009. It is an absolute joke. They're telling people on the phone that they're working a first in, first out system....which is a bare faced lie as people who registered AND ordered after me have already had theirs. Mine is only Windows 7 32bit Premium, not like it is one of the rarer species.
And to think I let the offer of a £40 pre-order of the full retail Win7 pass me by as I put my faith in their "free" upgrade....a free upgrade which ended up costing me £15, as I'm unfortunate enough to be English. I've sent three emails and not even had a standard, automated reply back yet. My patience is wearing very thin...and really they have dealt themselves out of a long-term customer, as I'll be damned if I buy anything off Dell again. I vote with my wallet at times like this, so I'll be buying my next PC off someone else. -
-
At least I can have a moan about it here with like-minded people - if you dare complain on the official Dell forum you get told to quit whining and reminded it is free, by the kind of people who can't ever accept Dell could put a foot wrong. To which I remind them that I've paid £15 for it, and the only reason I bought the PC was because of the promise of a free upgrade. I'll let you know how I go on. Thanks again.
