Ordered all of my water cooling parts this weekend aside from tubing and fitting, going to be ordering my power supply and custom sleeved cables this week and then will be just about ready to finally get my new machine built and cannot wait. I still need to de-lid my 8700k. As far as this goes, can I use one of the same de-lidding tools from previous generations or is there something special I need for this cpu? Is the Rockit 88 the one I should be ordering? And while I'm asking, what is the best thermal paste these days, both to put on the die itself during the de-lid, and what to put back on the IHS between the water block when I build it? I know I want 2 separate kinds there.

Awesome. I can hardly wait to see pics of your new rig once it is ready. Have you already selected or purchased the case?
    • Yes, Rockit88 tool works for 6700K, 7700K and 8700K (as well as all other socket 1151/1150)
    • Use Conductonaut between the die and IHS (put a tiny piece of Scotch tape over the gold contacts near the die... should only be large enough to cover those gold dots)
    • Conductonaut with foam dam, Phobya NanoGrease Extreme or Kryonaut are all good options for the top of the IHS. I ran out of Phobya, so I have Kryonaut there now. Temps are basically the same with either one.

Thanks for the reply, yes I have purchased a Corsair 570x a month or two ago that has been sitting on my desk taunting me that I am not currently using it. I just ordered my power supply today, at this point the only core component I am missing is my video card and memory, but memory I am not in a HUGE rush for, I figure if I do not have it by the time I have all of the other components and water cooling done, I can just steal one of my 8gig sticks from my current computer (or both) to at least get the machine up and running until I get the memory I want. Once I get the De-lidder and thermal paste I will be ready to at least start getting all of the components in and planning out the water cooling. I am an idiot and just realized I ordered the PSU without the thermal paste from newegg so I will have to go do that now. I plan on using Conductonaut and Kryonaut here. Looking into custom sleeved cables, but they are a bit more expensive than I guess I initially thought they would be (almost the cost of the PSU itself for a full set of cables) so I will take it slow with those. Probably going to order black/green cables from Cablemod to match the rest of my theme I am going with, but I will only start off with the 24pin cable, PCI-E cables for the GPU, and 8pin for the CPU as the back of my case will be facing my wall so I will not be as concerned about the cable colors on the hard drives and stuff since no one will see it and I can cross that bridge later when I have more money. My primochill vue will not be shipping until after the 29th so ultimately even if I had all of my other parts that will hold me back from being able to complete the build so I'm not rushing to get every missing piece at once but I am excited that the time to build is finally getting closer and closer. Sadly the prices of my PUBG Bandana have gone down to ~600-650$ in the past 2 weeks from about $850, it had been raising so I was holding off on selling it and now it's back down. I will probably keep holding onto this until I have literally all of my other parts and if the price has not gone back up I will end up selling it for whatever it is at and use that money to buy the GPU, initially I was hoping to fully cover the cost but with the prices of items fluctuating I will end up having to put some of my own money in on top of it.

Anyway, this is what my build will be looking like component wise when completed.

Corsair 570x Case, Aorus Gaming 7 z370, Aorus 1080TI Waterforce Extreme WB, 16gb G Skill Trident Z RGB memory, Corsair AX860 PSU, i7 8700k, 240mm radiator + 360mm radiator for water cooling and 2TB WD Green hdd.

As I typed all of this out I realized I compeltely forgot about an SSD for this build as I will most likely be selling my whole current desktop to a friend and losing my 250, I do not want to take my 1tb out of my laptop but I am considering it rather than buying a whole new 1tb for my desktop. Maybe put my 1tb NVME into my desktop and buy a 500gb nvme to throw in my laptop? Or maybe buy a 250-500gb 2.5" ssd for now and throw in a 1tb nvme later as I do not know if I could afford another one right now, but I definitely want a minimum of 1tb SSD space in this build.

And it looks like conductonaut is sold out on amazon and newegg except for big $50+ containers of it that I know I will probably never use.

Coollaboratory Liquid Ultra worked well for me during my delid, I haven't tried Conductonaut so can't speak of whether it's better than CLU, so I suppose you could always get some CLU instead.

Looks like it will be a nice rig. You can use the Intel HD Graphics temporarily until you get a GPU. I temporarily turned it on to flash the 1080 Ti that I bricked trying a different vBIOS on it.

I usually get the big tube of Conductonaut from memory-c.com and I see they are out of the smaller tube. They generally have the best prices. Performance-PCS has the small tube in stock now.

    http://www.performance-pcs.com/thermal-grizzly-conductonaut-high-performance-thermal-grease-1g.html

If all you are looking for is data storage, get one of these and take it out of the external enclosure. It is identical to the bare drive, but less expensive in the USB enclosure (I know, that makes no sense). https://www.seagate.com/consumer/backup/expansion-portable/

It's weird how that works. I have done this before for storage drives. My 2tb in my current desktop and my 2tb drive I will be putting in my new build are WD green drives that both came out of a 4tb external HDD a few years ago. Even new I think the device only cost something like 100-150 which is probably what 2tb drives were close to going for at the time and I was able to buy it for cheap on clearence when I worked at Staples and just took the 2 drives out and have had them for years. Storage I am mostly set on with the 2tb drive but I want the 1tb of storage on an SSD for games I care about as they keep getting bigger and bigger and being able to still store certain things on it for transfer speeds etc. In my laptop I filled up about 500 gigs or more of my SSD already and I feel like I barely put any games on it, but when GTA V alone is like 70 gigs now....space isn't quite what it used to be. Of course I just ordered all of my watercooling stuff from PPC and didn't think to get the thermal paste or check over the weekend, rip.

@Johnksss You don't have to rub it in. I mean, I think for the most part online prices are typically the same or better and I don't mind waiting a couple days for delivery but yes...if I could just go into a store and buy everything I needed it would make my life so much simpler, but sadly CT blows and we have no computer stores here. Closest store I know of is Microcenter in New York which is about an hour away from me, and I've made that drive before plenty of times. My CPU I got a really really good sale on when I bought it a couple years ago, and I got my motherboard for like $150 which was an open box one, but I have had no issues with it since and the things MSRP was like $400 and while making that trip I got a used open box GTX 970 for a build my friend was building at the time for the price or maybe even less than a new 960. So yeah, I definitly will make that trip when it's practical and worth it but I'm not going to drive that far out of my way for thermal paste heh, and when I was there buying my motherboard a month or two ago, my RAM and PSU that I wanted were both marked up compared to online so I didn't buy them. PSU was like $50 or more higher than it was online at the time from other stores.

Rub it in? I'm lost. It was a suggestion not a what you have to do. And if you can find online stores willing to price match, then you too can get the same deals. My bad.

Don't we all? Man, I wish we had a Microcenter here. We have a couple of Fry's. The closest is like 40 minutes and the other over an hour away.

@KY_BULLET - I am not sure which thread it was in, and it was a snapshot in time. I think stock is a lot better now, so I would check Fry's, Microcenter, NewEgg, B&H Photo, etc. You might even get lucky and find 8700K for a good price at Best Buy. The place that had the best price was a company I had never heard of before, but I don't recall the name of it. Most of the links I shared in that post were very close (within $15-20) to the same price.

Ain't that the truth. It's really stupid how much games are becoming space gobbling slobs. Gears of War 4 is one of the worst, but they are all getting out of control. I have two 1TB Samsung SSDs that I use for game installation drives and that's still not enough space for all of my games to be installed. I have to decide what I want and skip the rest of the stuff in my Steam, Origin, UPlay and GOG libraries

Why? FYI. Silicon lottery went for Conductonaut this time (I'm sure they never would switched if Grizzly was a worse produckt). Same as many others... I have used Conductonaut the last couple of years. With good results.

Not the big difference. I will later put up a thread-post with temp comparison between 4 years old brittle exhausted Coollaboratory Liquid Ultra vs. brand new Grizzly Conductonaut on my Alienware 17.

Here is a few results from CLU vs. Conductonaut.

I was being sarcastic, I'm fully aware I need Microcenter in my life, sadly I live somewhere where we don't have any or any PC stores and driving to NY for parts isn't always practical so I was joking that you were rubbing it in, sorry if it didn't come across that way.

@Mr. Fox I love Frys, I wish we had any of those out here more than a Microcenter, when I go to AZ I like to stop in a Frys or two just to walk around and look at everything because they are at least twice the size or more of the Microcenter I have "near me" that I have been to.

So that's 4 yr old dried CLU vs brand new Conductonaut then? I only compared the wprime1024 results you did: so Conductonaut was 2 degC cooler than 4 yr old CLU. Not a big difference, but do we know how Conductonaut ages once applied?

@Mr. Fox thanks for the info about PPC and the thermal paste, about to order it today from them and order the rocketlid so I can at least get that part of the way and get my motherboard in the case, all of my other WCing stuff got delivered today so I have that to go home and get started cleaning and prepping and have the block so I can get the mobo all set and really get started building, cannot wait. It seems the prices are better on the thermal paste here as well compared to the other places I saw yesterday.

Of course I ordered $350+ worth of water cooling components and the next day they started a free shipping event on orders over $100, and I have to go back to them now for thermal paste when I could have gotten everything together, rip.

Maybe you missed... The pict in the spoiler above show a well working fresh - but not brand new Coollaboratory Liquid Ultra vs. New Conductonaut. Aka this is same as Apple vs. Apples.

See this... Test done before and after repaste with Grizzly Conductonaut. Tested 19 and 20 Dec 2017.

Old brittle exhausted Coollaboratory Liquid Ultra... 42x (91/82C)
Old brittle exhausted Coollaboratory Liquid Ultra... 42x (87/82C)

Brand new Grizzly Conductonaut 42x (80/75C)

Silicon Lottery has tested Grizzly Conductonaut for about a year before they determined to switch. I have myself used Conductonaut for about 1.5 year on my 6700K before I switched out for 7700K. And it show good results over time (we are quite sure how it will ages - shouldn't come as a surprise).

Maybe you mis-titled your screen shots in your post I'm quoting, that's still showing Old CLU vs New Conductonaut. Might be easier if you just tell me the the degC difference between new CLU and new Conductonaut (I'll believe you!) rather than posting massive screenshots, my brain & time available can't handle that small complication!

2 degrees in favor of Conductonaut.

Last Post #635 show near 4 year old CLU vs. New Conductonaut. Because Conductonaut is similar as CLU... You can see how much it was degraded after 4 years use (degradation was around 8 C). Oh'well probably of no interest.

CLU used to be better than Conductonaut. Unfortunately, Coollaboratory changed something in the formula and it's very runny now, and not nearly as viscous as it used to be. I used to swear by it, but the last 3 or 4 syringes of it that I bought were junk, so I switched to Conductonaut.

If anyone wants my my modded Thermaltake View 31 TG case let me know. Quote me here and I will send you a PM. @Trafficante was kind enough to upgrade me to the View 71, so I don't need it any more.

Yeah, that's definitely not good. But, anything with Gallium is going to destroy aluminum like that. Liquid Ultra, Liquid Pro, Conductonaut, Phobya Liquid Metal will all do this to aluminum.

This gigantic 50 pound case could hold at least one first-grader inside of it. That gave me a crap TON of extra space, so I was able to use the original Riing Plus fans together with the EK Vardar Furious fans on the 360mm radiator in push/pull along with the EVGA Hybrid radiator with push/pull. CPU temps are definitely better with 6 high static pressure fans pumping air through the 360mm radiator.

Yup, sure is. Only yours has the Corsair fans. I also set up both of your GPU radiator fans in push/pull.

I normally have all of them set to white, but I thought I would make them green for Christmas.

Congrats on the new case! And looks good in green, a bit different.

Talking of cases, I saw this review on Gamers Nexus and thought this could be one for Mr. Fox, because it's open bench style right! https://www.gamersnexus.net/hwreviews/3178-cougar-conquer-case-review
(I do think it's a bit ugly though! Your case looks better, ha I think my case looks better too!)

Thanks, yes it does look fantastic. So did the View 31, but this is amazing and I love how massive it is.

@Trafficante was going to get me an open bench and everyone one of them that I liked is now discontinued or on back order with no ETA. I really wanted the Lian Li aluminum bench and I was bummed out that Lian Li stopped making it. But, I liked his View 71 enough that it was the next best option. Other than a hinged glass side panel, it is as wide open and unencumbered as an open bench would be. Truly gorgeous in every way. The hugeness and how heavy it is makes it even more awesome. It literally does weigh 50~ pounds, LOL... no exaggeration.

Yeah, that one you mentioned it not aesthetically appealing to me and the way it is made seems like it would mostly defeat the purpose of having an open bench. It's more like a steam punk or mech looking motif than a truly functional open bench designed for the ease of hardware swapping. But, I am sure some people go nuts getting excited about that kind of thing.

Regarding Vardar fans... Seen the review of the revised 2200rpm version EK-Vardar EVO 120ER

Seems like a fairly good product, but the EVO not nearly as powerful as the Vardar Furious fans. Vardar Furious is much higher CFM and static pressure. Louder, too... but, worth putting up with the noise considering how much stronger it is.

I just hope and pray EK does not do away with the Furious fan and expect this weaker EVO to be regarded as an acceptable substitute for it. The place where I bought my Furious fans now only carries the weaker EVO fans. And, EK web site says only a few Furious fans available. It is going to suck if they discontinue the Furious. But, I am starting to see more evidence that EK is cutting corners on quality and going cheap in some areas so maybe I should not be surprised. They also charge the same price for the inferior EVO 120ER.

    Vardar Furious FF5-120:
    - Max Air Flow: 107 CFM = 181 m³/h
    - Static Pressure: 5.81mm H2O = 57 Pa
    - Noise Level: 42 dBA

    Vardar EVO 120ER:
    - Max airflow: 77 CFM
    - Max static pressure: 3.16 mm H2O = 31 Pa
    - Noise: 33.5 dBA

I know all this bro Fox. Have both models (2200-3000rpm, but not the revised models with EVO branding). I would only post the review for this desktop thread.
But I don't think you should worry all to much. Some info for you... EK-Furious Vardar EVO 120 (3000rpm) as you can see is also renamed with EVO in it's name now. Evo is the new feature. And from what I can see... They are in stock

How about Noctua's Industrial PPC range of fans if you want high static pressure & high airflow:
    https://noctua.at/en/products/fan

Some of those can rival by looks of it. Some of them surpass those statistics of airflow & static pressure, e.g. NF-F12 industrialPPC-3000 PWM

Honestly, just go buy Delta fans in that case.

I personally like low noise fans the foremost. Thats the reason why I go with ML140s. The fan is very quiet in my enclosed chassis.

What is written in the specifications vs. real are two different things. But still a good options.

Delta fans are the most powerful you can buy. But probably at another price. And 6-12 Delta fans at 55-65db, expect some noise :D

As long as the fans don't sound like a siren going off, I don't really care if they are loud. Quiet fans are not something I place a lot of value on because it's just not important to me. I run max fans the majority of the time in my laptops and when I am benching or playing games I run with the fans maxed out on the desktop as well.
