Ordered all of my water cooling parts this weekend aside from tubing and fitting, going to be ordering my power supply and custom sleeved cables this week and then will be just about ready to finally get my new machine built and cannot wait. I still need to de-lid my 8700k. As far as this goes, can I use one of the same de-lidding tools from previous generations or is there something special I need for this cpu? Is the Rockit 88 the one I should be ordering? And while I'm asking, what is the best thermal paste these days, both to put on the die itself during the de-lid, and what to put back on the IHS between the water block when I build it? I know I want 2 separate kinds there.
-
- Yes, Rockit88 tool works for 6700K, 7700K and 8700K (as well as all other socket 1151/1150)
- Use Conductonaut between the die and IHS (put a tiny piece of Scotch tape over the gold contacts near the die... should only be large enough to cover those gold dots)
- Conductonaut with foam dam, Phobya NanoGrease Extreme or Kryonaut are all good options for the top of the IHS. I ran out of Phobya, so I have Kryonaut there now. Temps are basically the same with either one.

Anyway, this is what my build will be looking like component wise when completed.
Corsair 570x Case, Aorus Gaming 7 z370, Aorus 1080TI Waterforce Extreme WB, 16gb G Skill Trident Z RGB memory, Corsair AX860 PSU, i7 8700k, 240mm radiator + 360mm radiator for water cooling and 2TB WD Green hdd.
As I typed all of this out I realized I compeltely forgot about an SSD for this build as I will most likely be selling my whole current desktop to a friend and losing my 250, I do not want to take my 1tb out of my laptop but I am considering it rather than buying a whole new 1tb for my desktop. Maybe put my 1tb NVME into my desktop and buy a 500gb nvme to throw in my laptop? Or maybe buy a 250-500gb 2.5" ssd for now and throw in a 1tb nvme later as I do not know if I could afford another one right now, but I definitely want a minimum of 1tb SSD space in this build.
And it looks like conductonaut is sold out on amazon and newegg except for big $50+ containers of it that I know I will probably never use. -

I usually get the big tube of Conductonaut from memory-c.com and I see they are out of the smaller tube. They generally have the best prices. Performance-PCS has the small tube in stock now.

If all you are looking for is data storage, get one of these and take it out of the external enclosure. It is identical to the bare drive, but less expensive in the USB enclosure (I know, that makes no sense). https://www.seagate.com/consumer/backup/expansion-portable/ -
@Mr. Fox He needs a little Microcenter in his life.
-
@Johnksss You don't have to rub it in. I mean, I think for the most part online prices are typically the same or better and I don't mind waiting a couple days for delivery but yes...if I could just go into a store and buy everything I needed it would make my life so much simpler, but sadly CT blows and we have no computer stores here. Closest store I know of is Microcenter in New York which is about an hour away from me, and I've made that drive before plenty of times. My CPU I got a really really good sale on when I bought it a couple years ago, and I got my motherboard for like $150 which was an open box one, but I have had no issues with it since and the things MSRP was like $400 and while making that trip I got a used open box GTX 970 for a build my friend was building at the time for the price or maybe even less than a new 960. So yeah, I definitly will make that trip when it's practical and worth it but I'm not going to drive that far out of my way for thermal paste heh, and when I was there buying my motherboard a month or two ago, my RAM and PSU that I wanted were both marked up compared to online so I didn't buy them. PSU was like $50 or more higher than it was online at the time from other stores. -
@Mr. Fox ...You posted a link a while back on the cheapest place to buy Intel i7-8700k. You care to repost that link for me? I'm hoping mine isn't fried but if it is, I want to have my ducks in a row

@KY_BULLET - I am not sure which thread it was in, and it was a snapshot in time. I think stock is a lot better now, so I would check Fry's, Microcenter, NewEgg, B&H Photo, etc. You might even get lucky and find 8700K for a good price at Best Buy. The place that had the best price was a company I had never heard of before, but I don't recall the name of it. Most of the links I shared in that post were very close (within $15-20) to the same price.

@Mr. Fox
I have been to all 9 of them in SoCal and 1 in Vegas that I got 4 GTX Titans from
Also, frys does price match and sometimes they pay the tax. -
Ok thank you Mr. Fox

@Mr. Fox I love Frys, I wish we had any of those out here more than a Microcenter, when I go to AZ I like to stop in a Frys or two just to walk around and look at everything because they are at least twice the size or more of the Microcenter I have "near me" that I have been to. -

@Mr. Fox thanks for the info about PPC and the thermal paste, about to order it today from them and order the rocketlid so I can at least get that part of the way and get my motherboard in the case, all of my other WCing stuff got delivered today so I have that to go home and get started cleaning and prepping and have the block so I can get the mobo all set and really get started building, cannot wait. It seems the prices are better on the thermal paste here as well compared to the other places I saw yesterday.
Of course I ordered $350+ worth of water cooling components and the next day they started a free shipping event on orders over $100, and I have to go back to them now for thermal paste when I could have gotten everything together, rip.Mr. Fox likes this. -
See this... Test done before and after repaste with Grizzly Conductonaut. Tested 19 and 20 Dec 2017.
Old brittle exhausted Coollaboratory Liquid Ultra... 42x (91/82C)
Old brittle exhausted Coollaboratory Liquid Ultra... 42x (87/82C)
Brand new Grizzly Conductonaut 42x (80/75C)
Silicon Lottery has tested Grizzly Conductonaut for about a year before they determined to switch. I have myself used Conductonaut for about 1.5 year on my 6700K before I switched out for 7700K. And it show good results over time (we are quite sure how it will ages - shouldn't come as a surprise).

No they never could figure it out. I'm guessing it was just a weak board. I knew it had to be the motherboard because my #4 system fan quit working at the same time it popped. Yep all good now.

Last Post #635 show near 4 year old CLU vs. New Conductonaut. Because Conductonaut is similar as CLU... You can see how much it was degraded after 4 years use (degradation was around 8 C). Oh'well probably of no interest.Last edited: Dec 22, 2017Robbo99999 and Mr. Fox like this. -

Talking of cases, I saw this review on Gamers Nexus and thought this could be one for Mr. Fox, because it's open bench style right! https://www.gamersnexus.net/hwreviews/3178-cougar-conquer-case-review
(I do think it's a bit ugly though! Your case looks better, ha I think my case looks better too!)Trafficante, KY_BULLET and Mr. Fox like this. -
@Trafficante was going to get me an open bench and everyone one of them that I liked is now discontinued or on back order with no ETA. I really wanted the Lian Li aluminum bench and I was bummed out that Lian Li stopped making it. But, I liked his View 71 enough that it was the next best option. Other than a hinged glass side panel, it is as wide open and unencumbered as an open bench would be. Truly gorgeous in every way. The hugeness and how heavy it is makes it even more awesome. It literally does weigh 50~ pounds, LOL... no exaggeration.
Yeah, that one you mentioned it not aesthetically appealing to me and the way it is made seems like it would mostly defeat the purpose of having an open bench. It's more like a steam punk or mech looking motif than a truly functional open bench designed for the ease of hardware swapping. But, I am sure some people go nuts getting excited about that kind of thing.Last edited: Dec 22, 2017Trafficante and Robbo99999 like this. -

I just hope and pray EK does not do away with the Furious fan and expect this weaker EVO to be regarded as an acceptable substitute for it. The place where I bought my Furious fans now only carries the weaker EVO fans. And, EK web site says only a few Furious fans available. It is going to suck if they discontinue the Furious. But, I am starting to see more evidence that EK is cutting corners on quality and going cheap in some areas so maybe I should not be surprised. They also charge the same price for the inferior EVO 120ER.
Vardar Furious FF5-120:
- Max Air Flow: 107 CFM = 181 m³/h
- Static Pressure: 5.81mm H2O = 57 Pa
- Noise Level: 42 dBA
Vardar EVO 120ER:
- Max airflow: 77 CFM
- Max static pressure: 3.16 mm H2O = 31 Pa
- Noise: 33.5 dBAPapusan likes this. -
But I don't think you should worry all to much. Some info for you... EK-Furious Vardar EVO 120 (3000rpm) as you can see is also renamed with EVO in it's name now. Evo is the new feature. And from what I can see... They are in stock

Some of those can rival by looks of it. Some of them surpass those statistics of airflow & static pressure, e.g. NF-F12 industrialPPC-3000 PWMMr. Fox likes this. -
Honestly, just go buy Delta fans in that case.
I personally like low noise fans the foremost. Thats the reason why I go with ML140s. The fan is very quiet in my enclosed chassis.Mr. Fox, hmscott and Robbo99999 like this. -
Delta fans are the most powerful you can buy. But probably at another price. And 6-12 Delta fans at 55-65db, expect some noiseRage Set likes this. -
As long as the fans don't sound like a siren going off, I don't really care if they are loud. Quiet fans are not something I place a lot of value on because it's just not important to me. I run max fans the majority of the time in my laptops and when I am benching or playing games I run with the fans maxed out on the desktop as well.
