Although I disagree with some aspects of what are written here, this guide seems good enough to share. It hits the timings in a different order than I do, so that may be able to give a better result. I'll probably try this guide to OC my ram just to see if doing it this way yields any better performance than I already have doing it my way (always open to try something new; if it works, then cool, if not, then I just wasted some time).

Well, it looks like I'm keeping the 3090 (my father always said never mix money and friends....and he was right again), so I listed my 3070 on eBay for $1k (yes, a thousand) making it slightly cheaper by ~$100-150 than the last 5-10 on average that had sold and it sold within an hour.

This is the EK Pro manifold. They also have a version for $20 more that is meant for 2 CPUs and 4 GPUs. This one is $80. I got it from performance pcs. They were out of the larger manifold when I bought it.
But, I'm also mounting it on a server rack and it's going to 3 (eventually 4) systems. Each system has their own pump and reservoir, while there is the larger reservoir setup just higher than the 4x480mm rads i have at the top of the loop.

https://www.newegg.com/g-skill-16gb-288-pin-ddr4-sdram/p/N82E16820374020
G.Skill Ripjaws V 4000 2x8GB CL 17-18-18-38 for $160. Hard to beat that deal.
https://www.newegg.com/g-skill-32gb-288-pin-ddr4-sdram/p/N82E16820374021
G.Skill Ripjaws V 4000 2x16GB CL 17-18-18-38 for $270.
The G.Skill 4266 is $200 for the same CL, but that is 25% more price for a little over 5% more frequency, although that is lower latency (also uses 1.45V instead of 1.4V like the 4000 sticks).
So if trying to get some decent ram relatively cheap, that would be my recommendation (mine are Trident Z 4133 CL19-21-21 so these sticks likely spank mine due to lower timings out of the box, even if I can tighten mine to 16-18-18).
Edit:
4000 CL17 is 8.5ns; 4400 CL17 is 7.73ns
Found a better deal.
G.Skill Ripjaws V 4400 2x8GB CL 17-18-18-38 for $191 (10% faster with about 10% less latency for about 20% more in cost than the 4000 sticks above)

Finally got the KP fired up. I installed it in my gaming rig first so that I can tune it before putting it on the 7980XE and 3970X test bench. Maybe the 10900K as well... time is very limited these days.
The KP looks like a pretty good bin. With the 9900KS @ 53x the Fire Strike Combined was pretty nice at 13761.
The peak FS Graphics hit 53157. Not too shabby as I was glad to see it break the 53K barrier.
Maybe with some more tinkering I can break the 38K barrier (Overall score) in the gaming rig lol.. that'd be neat. With the 10900K this should easily break 38K+.
This card should pull some nice numbers once it gets onto the test benches. Looking forward to it.
Hope everyone is doing well.Attached Files:

After two weeks at Asus' Repair Center, I get an e-mail with tracking information. Asus is sending me a replacement Zenith Extreme II Alpha. No information on what the issue was and if it is possible to avoid in the future. Again, two different variants of the same mobo, both having to be replaced. My original Zenith Extreme with my 1950X is going on strong for the past three years, now serving as a server for three thin clients.
Now I wait for the board and I have to cross my fingers and hope the board didn't take the CPU down with it. I'm going to try e-mailing Asus to see if they care to share what the issue could be.Johnksss, Papusan, ajc9988 and 1 other person like this. -

Sad day that Fry's is shutting down. If they are having going out of business sales, then you may want to find out and visit if you have one near you.
"(This will also reduce the defunct company's potential to liquidate, as the consignment-based merchandise must simply be returned to original manufacturers—which may have been the final duty for remaining employees this week.)"
I blame Gavin Newsom in part for this. If you look at illness and deaths of California with the strictest mask and lockdown measures versus Florida with some of the most lax mask and lockdown measures, you wind up seeing they have roughly the same outcomes (which is weird because with the older population of Florida, you would think it would be higher). Good thing he is being recalled (and unlike what news tells you, public sentiment has soured on Newsom).Last edited: Feb 24, 2021 -

It really is a shame. End of an era. I mean, they survived a private scandal with the $65M being stolen by the VP, all to be ended because people were not being paid enough in CA for discretionary purchases, pressure from online sales (fair competitive pressure, not wrong in any way), all for the final death stroke to be lockdowns where people could not shop for non-state-sanctioned items (sounding awfully like communist states, or other authoritarian non-communist states that have done the same, ...)iunlock likes this.

As with any big block stores, in this era they had to get competitive due to online retailers, which put a lot of pressure on physical stores, while putting some out of business. Newegg Shuffle is up with a slew of 3060's ranging in price from $329 to $519, single 3070 @ $719 and PS5s at $779 (!).
Best Buy had a drop earlier. I actually ordered a Merc 319 6900xt ($1499, yeah, ok) just to see if I could then cancelled it. I did notice my local small box best buy is no longer eligible for pickup. I would have to travel 46 miles to the King of Prussia, PA Best Buy. Odd.
Best Buy has really cleaned up and streamlined their ordering process. Even if you're signed in they require a text or email verification before you can order both on the app and online.
I always like checking EVGA right before a new product sign up and watching their site still continue to slow to a crawl and eventually crash in spots. I signed up for a 3060 on EVGA and the lower end ($329) 3060's on the Shuffle. If I manage to get one I can upgrade my wife's 1060 to a 3060 and end up paying less than $100 difference with how much 1060 6GB are going for atm. -

Last night, Amazon had 5800x's in stock for quite awhile.
Today, Best Buy has 5800x's and even 3700x's in stock even now. Sold out of everything else, but oddly their 8/16 core models are in abundance.
You would almost think they are making sure they are getting ready for the 11th gen launch.....
I also re-ordered a 5800x. After seeing my brother's 5600x system I built with no OC, a low profile cooler for a smaller case boost to 4.6ghz all cores sub 80 and clearly beat my old OC'd 8086k @ 5.3 in CB15, CB20 and CB23 I have to get one to stack up against my 9900k @ 5.2. That was using the exact same Dual Rank B-Die 3200 sticks at stock XMP. It has officially become an itch I have to scratch.....
I didn't even see the 3080 come into stock. I saw the 3070 briefly and Merc 319's 6900xt's (Black and Ultra) in stock. I also saw the 5950x and 5900x for a hot second then gone. I signed up for EVGA as soon as I could get through and the shuffle so we'll see how that turns out tonight. I only signed up for the $329 6GB models and one $399 12GB model.ajc9988 likes this. -
Yep, on best buy I tried for the 3080, but that went out on the first attempt. The 3070 I tried to add to my cart. Nope. Tried again when it turned yellow again. Nope. It never turned yellow again. They had one more 3070, that one being an Asus for $730 or $750. At that point I gave up and just put in for the newegg shuffle.
That is why i hate best buy so much. I get there early enough that I get multiple attempts to add to the cart, but it never adds it and you are not guaranteed it until you add to cart AND make it to the cart/checkout screen. Leaves a bad taste in my mouth how close I've been on so many occasions on best buys website.
Edit:
Even though this helps competition against me getting a card, for Best Buy, a couple tips:
1) have the tab open in GPUs, then filter for Exclude Out of Stock Items. You will see "coming soon" on some GPUs. THOSE are the ones you open a tab for.
2) have at least one audible stock notification system so that when it says it is in stock, you can quickly refresh the page.
3) Click add to cart, see it turn gray and have the notice pop up saying you must have it added to cart and be in your cart to buy it, along with it will turn back to yellow when they release another batch in a couple minutes.
4) still miss out doing all these things.

Those are the steps I've used before to try and get cards to a degree. It's worked so far on a FE 3090 and FE 3070. It worked on the Merc 319 6900xt Black today, but I am not dropping $1500+tax to give AMD a whirl on that one. After I ordered it, I did think about it though for a few minutes before cancelling it.
I guess the steps to slow down automation via text/email authentication are a blessing and a curse. You're right; getting it into the basket and making it to actual checkout where it is reserved is where it all falls apart.
Newegg let me know I didn't win the shuffle...again. I know some who sign up for everything, but I just pick the ones I truly want.
EVGA 3060's are going out to the initial round of buyers/auto notifiers. Looks like I'm ~20min behind the last reported auto notify.

That is the 2x16GB 4000 17-18-18-38 Trident Z RGB kit from G.Skill for $310.
The same timings and voltage (1.4V) and frequency can be found on this kit of G.Skill Ripjaws V for $280

I'd bet the exact same sticks under the hood, so the question is do you want to pay $30 for RGB.
Also, since posting above, the 4000 2x8gb dropped to $146, the 4266 2x8GB is now $165, and the 4400 2x8GB is still $191. So the new sweet spot is the 4266, but any of those kits is gravy.

I ended up going with an X570 Tomahawk.Seems to be the sweet spot for performance without breaking the bank and one of the newer X570 boards with USB 3.1 gen 2. It's daisy chain, but I'll still see where I can take my 4x8 4000 B-die kit and/or get a 2x16GB set of dual ranks but they can get real pricey too. I'm find with a set of 3600 sticks @ 1:1 or hope for the best with the 4000's and see if I can get stock XMP out of them and adjust 2:1 to 1:1.

Understandable. The fear for that kit is whether or not it is a B-die kit with how loose the timings are other than cas latency. But if you don't have the extra $60 to step up to the 4000 17-18-18-38, I get it. Here are better ram sticks or equivalent ram sticks (depending on if you want RGB) for the same or lower than what you linked:
Trident Z Neo 4000 18-22-22-42 2x16GB $210 (Edit: these are on sale until Sunday, then go up to $230)
https://www.newegg.com/g-skill-32gb-288-pin-ddr4-sdram/p/N82E16820374105?Item=N82E16820374105

https://www.newegg.com/g-skill-32gb-288-pin-ddr4-sdram/p/N82E16820232907?Item=N82E16820232907
Ripjaws V 4000 18-22-22-42 2x16GB $200
https://www.newegg.com/g-skill-32gb-288-pin-ddr4-sdram/p/N82E16820374107?Item=N82E16820374107
Notice that the 3600 is the same timings and voltage as the kit you mentioned, but for $30 less! But, for the two 4000 kits I posted, they both cost less, while also having only a $10 difference for RGB. At $10, why not get the RGB if you like it. That's something I might even say OK and do if I wasn't moving to putting everything into server chassis so would never see the RGB.
Now, if being fair, the 3600 kits have an 8.88ns latency and the 4000 kits have a 9ns latency. But, most likely the 4000 kits are the higher binned of the same sticks, plus cl 17 at 4000 is 8.5ns and they likely couldn't tighten it all that much for these to be consistent for a production line (or used the ones that could in a different line altogether).
Also, if you have the better binned sticks, you usually could tighten them more than getting the lower binned sticks. So if willing to overclock the ram and set timings manually, you could still run 1:1, get the 4000 kit, then run it at like 3800 and tighten it down. Don't know if you want the extra work, but sounds like a fun time to me.
I couldn't either. That is why it came down to Intel versus a 3700X. When you can grab a 10700KF (and now a 10700K) for less than some people are selling the 3700X, AMD isn't worth it. And now getting a 10900KF for the MSRP of a 5800X, that really is a hard decision. And with the 5800Xs going for sometimes $500+, not even the $450 you can get the 10900KF for, Intel is the better buy right now in many cases.
With that said, the 10 series seems less smooth of an experience than my 6700K was in some respects. Maybe it is just needing to nuke everything and start from scratch on the OS (M$, amiright?). But, it is still a good experience. It can handle what I do WAY better than the 6700K could, without having other aspects of the TR platform, which was good, but has its own quirks.
There isn't just one perfect system, but right now, Intel's value is really better, IMO. It's a dead end by the end of the year with Intel moving to socket LGA 1700, but we are talking about buying right now, not what is best this fall or next year.Last edited: Feb 26, 2021Rage Set and electrosoft like this. -
Oh for sure if you are looking at the playing to build your next system and/or you just have the funds for fulfilling a need then obviously if one vendor isnt available you look at the other.
For myself I got a x570 board with the intention of getting a later revision of Zen so on that front kind of locked in, its not even that I need it though so I can wait... -
Also, with the motherboard, it flips back to paying the premium, if you can find the chip at msrp, as the cheaper platform for you. Being able to just pop in the chip makes a difference versus mb+cpu purchase.

Ideally, I'd like to keep it under $200. I found the 3600 sticks on Amazon for $5 less ($184.99) and a bit more back in rewards so soften the blow even more:
https://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B07Z45XB3G/ref=ox_sc_act_title_1?smid=A2Y8CGQ5110ZKT&psc=1
or the $199 4000 sticks you linked too (which are cheaper on NewEgg).
I'm indifferent with RAM RGB. I'd rather save the $$$, but if it's close enough I'd just pick up the pretty memory. That's what I did with my B-Die 4000 kit. I saved over $100 by picking up the same casings as above vs the Royal Z diamond RGB light show.
I'll mull it over since my Tomahawk doesn't arrive till Friday. I have to wait for my HX1200 replacement from the recall RMA too. Right now, I'm down to a new motherboard and 5800x ordered. I'll work with my 4x8 4000 B-Die kit now, NH-D15, HX1200, old Corsair Case, a spare 256GB (!) M.2 I have on the shelf, borrow the wife's 1060 6GB (when able) and just get everything initially up and running and then start slowly buying and plugging in the pieces.
Worst case, it is a secondary system to tweak and play with or sell. Best case if it proves to be worth it, I replace my Z390 + 9900k.
And you're right. With the scarcity of AMD CPUs and Intel aggressive pricing (10700k's are @ $329 and 10900k's @ $439 both on Newegg) Intel is the better value atm. Next year, as always, the landscape with shift. -
Glad you could find the kit for even less. I realized G.skill switched to doing the same dimm in the ripjaws v series recently. I started noticing they had really good timings on specific higher end skus of the dimms. I then went to their website and realized they would have the same voltage, timings, etc., and you could get ripjaws v (no rgb option), Trident z neo/rgb, or the Trident Royal (bling tastic). If everything underneath is the same, then most likely the sticks are all the same, with RGB and reflective heatsinks being what separate the skus.
They even have a Ripjaws V with 4000 15-16-16-36 1.5V (2x8GB) (7.5ns CL) https://www.newegg.com/g-skill-16gb...00_cl15-_-20-232-968-_-Product&quicklink=true
Trident Z RGB - same all
https://www.newegg.com/g-skill-16gb...0 cl15&cm_re=4000_cl15-_-20-232-972-_-Product
Trident Z Royal - same all
https://www.newegg.com/g-skill-16gb...15&cm_re=4000_cl15-_-9SIAG7RDSK7329-_-Product
At 7.5ns, that CL is tighter than the 7.72ns CL of the 4400 17-18-18-38 sticks (in fact, that may be the bin that gave the 4400 version, which does not have a 2x16GB variant due to needing over 1.5V, which the 4266 2x16GB uses).
And sounds like a fun project. My next optimization will likely be me disabling core by core and finding the minimum necessary voltage per core at 5.1, 5.2, and 5.3. Maybe 5.4 if it isn't too much voltage as the heat might be controlled since only one core enabled at a time. Then setting the boost table for the chip to allow 5.2 for all core, then 5.3 for a certain number of cores, etc.
Then after that is binning the ram I have per slot, that way to find the best order. Then overclock the ram again to hopefully eek even more performance out of them.
So I am having fun with the Intel 10th gen mainstream platform. The new bells and whistles do let you get into the nitty gritty.
Also, didn't realize the 10900Ks have dropped that much. If only my system could have waited one more month before all that happened. At that price, I would have gotten that over my 10700KF (I got for $300, but taxes and shipping made it $330).Johnksss, Rage Set and electrosoft like this. -

I ended up ordering the 2x16GB from Amazon for $184.99 since it will arrive same day. My 5800x showed up on my doorstep today (wasn't due till this week) and my motherboard which wasn't due till the end of week but will now show up tomorrow.
Thew me off at first because it was so light since the 5600x had the cooler included.

Fair enough. Load up Thaiphoon Burner, if you can, and check out what it says about the DIMMs and the type of memory on them (manufacturer and die type). You can then also export that report and use that with the Ryzen DRAM calc, if you care to try that out as a starting point.
Just throwing that out, because I'm interested in if it is B- die on those sticks.

Benchmade was created to make benchmarks more secure and provide correct info and for validating scores.
And here I sit benching the old. I wonder why the scores doesn't match the clock speed I push on my old ([email protected]) An amazing good chips
At least the benchmark didn't crash with errors

I finally found time to carve out half of my 1TB Windows 7 SSD to make some room for Linux on the CPU binning bench. Now every computer I own is running Linux, including the TongFang turdbook. Lutris works well for running Cinebench (spoofing Windows 7). The all-core turbo is 5.0GHz but the BIOS set 5.2GHz on the two favored cores, so Cinebench is seeing that. These are running at 5.0GHz, not 5.2 as Cinebench believes they are.

So how is the voltage on the 10850K versus a 10900K? Are they 100MHz to 200MHz less?

Oh man, that's some poor optimisation somewhere, looks like a game from 2008 or earlier! Nooo, but WoW has been going on for years right, I never played it, I guess it's had some updates over the years, but it shouldn't really tank that much for that image quality on show....in my opinion. Hey, at least you actually got an Ampere card, you're one of the few! -
It's hard for me to say in general terms since this is the only 10850K that I have had my hands on. I would say it's OK and would be a nice option for a gamer. Compared to the twenty or so 10900K and two 10900KF that I have binned this sample would be average, not great but not as bad as a couple of extra lousy 10900K samples that I have seen. It doesn't seem to like overclocking as much, but to be totally fair it might be this cheap ASUS Prime motherboard just can't handle it. One of these days, when I have nothing better to do, I'm going to pop the lid off of it and drop it in the Z490 Dark bare die to see how it really runs.Papusan, Rage Set, electrosoft and 1 other person like this.

They totally overhauled the engine and graphics for Shadowlands including RT support. They upped the GPU requirements for their recommended GPU (albeit you can still run it with details dialed down into the dirt on most DX12 compliant cards) and in the betas were giving testers and users plenty of warning as they want to bring WoW into modern graphics and it shows in certain zones like Ardenweald which are on another level graphically than the rest of the game followed by Bastion.
If I'm outside of Shadowlands and in the older content I routinely sit at 200+ fps and cap it at 2x my 60hz refresh rate.
Step inside Shadowlands and with the new particle and FX effects, it is slamming cards like crazy. If I'm in the older content, my 3090 pulls ~120w-150w on average and the 360 fans stay at 555rpm and yawn.
That outdoor raid in Bastion, raids in general and especially Ardenweald pull ~400w at stock and the 360 fans kick up to 700-1100rpm. It is very beautiful compared to the older content and shows.
But yeah, with them trying to weave the older engine assets with newer assets for modernization, it won't be as efficient or look as good as just scrapping it and writing it new from the ground up like they were going to do with Titan.Robbo99999, Rage Set and ajc9988 like this. -
And this is why a lot of people shouldn't be doing anything sub-ambient XOC unless they are either mentored or do a hell of alot of research. According to Brian, he lost over several thousand dollars worth of GPU's to DICE. I kinda feel sorry for the guy, trying to keep up with Jay and Steve (and they were "trained" by actual XOC'ers) with no training withsoever.
What I don't understand is after supposedly killing two 3090's, he kept going with the 6900 XT. After the first death of a major component, I would be reevaluating my entire approach to overclocking at that point.
Edit: To add to this, both Steve and Jay learned a lot by dumping their radiators in ice baths. Looks like Brian went from custom water loops straight to DICE.ajc9988, Papusan and electrosoft like this.
