MSI finally released an AGESA updated BIOS:
And the problem still exists..... USB transfers freeze up and time goes from the expect ~6min to more than a day. I attempted a large file copy again over USB 3.x and it slows down to a crawl and eventually freezes and even CPU-Z won't load in because it is confused detecting the storage which SHOULD work as reported but is lost in limbo:
Eventually it will time out and CPU-Z and other USB engaged interrupts will release and proceed:
I can take this same external drive and hook it up to any of my Intel systems and it will transfer the entire drive no problem.
I can hook it up to 2.0 and it will transfer the entire drive no problem.
I can hook it up to Type C or TB on my laptops and it will transfer the entire drive no problem.
I even took the drive to my wife's 9100f Intel system and it transferred the entire drive no problem.
I tried it with a large 128GB USB 3.0 flash drive and same results as above.
The only difference between AGESA 1.2.0.1 and 1.2.0.2 is now it won't just drop to 0% and sit there till you unplug and plug back in. It will just continue to think it can transfer, transfer time increases to "More than a day" and it eventually times out. Instead of having to unplug and plug to resume you can then try again and it will continue to copy for awhile then enters the vicious cycle again:
Time remaining is all over the map. One moment it is 4 min, then 20 min, then 3 min then 10 min then it freezes up yet again and will sometimes resume or other times time out.Papusan, Talon, Ashtrix and 1 other person like this. -
Strange. Gigabyte had the AGESA updated BIOS available for a few weeks now. I have had no issues with my USB ports. I just test copied several GBs onto a Type C external drive (Samsung T5) and a SATA SSD 2.5 via an adapter. To be clear, I did not have my mobo set up before to test the USB's before applying the BIOS update.
Edit: To be fair to you, I don't do much "local" copying via USB ports. All of my computers are connected to my local servers. However, I'm going to push several Panasonic S1H RAW files through my T5 and see if it fails.

MSI just posted their update yesterday (4/12/2021). It is marked BETA just like the previous release that was .1 based was also marked BETA, but this one specifically addresses the USB issue and updates to the newest AGESA as indicated in their notes.
For small to medium file transfers it usually stays the course. It is over the course of large sustained transfers of multiple files it fails. I don't have a single 50GB file to test. I could create a compressed volume to test though.
Basically in summary the MSI BIOS update stopped hanging at 0% all the time (but some of the time). Instead it would just slowly time out, time to copy varied and either froze or extended to more than a day. The ports stopped dying as quickly and survived smaller file
transfers but large transfers of different files would eventually produce the same end result. Either way, the transfer then died. It was even to the point where CPU-Z would freeze on load when detecting storage if the USB port was in a stall.
The problem persists again with the new set of dying conditions on both A and C ports.
I'm going to hook my brother's system back up and run it through the exact same set of tests as his system has a Gigabyte B550M motherboard versus an MSI. I was able to fix the same problem with a BIOS update but I didn't do the same level
of file copies and tests. I will want to see if it hits the same wall with my large capacity external USB drives and thumb drives. -

I can't see much of a difference. But I'm not a gamer so you'll need to test it out yourself. Maybe it will give an ok boost on older hardware (Remember the spyware ping home to mama several times a day). I value better privacy, and easy fast install with less bloat. In same way as I try get rid of most of the spyware from the OS. Many small streams will turn into a river and decrease performance. Less is better in many ways.Last edited: Apr 13, 2021Spartan@HIDevolution, Mr. Fox, Clamibot and 1 other person like this.

Well, here's some interesting info for 3090 Kingpin GPU owners that might come in handy if you prefer using Legacy BIOS instead of UEFI like me.
I got the new XOC vBIOS with adjustable BAR support from Vince. Windoze OS X 20H2 Cancer Edition would not allow me to flash it. I noticed the ROM size was smaller. But, I rebooted into LTSC and flashed it without issue. After restarting my motherboard would halt and it would fail to POST with code D6 (no display output) unless I moved the vBIOS selection switch to another position or reset the BIOS so that it flips back to UEFI.
I already knew UEFI and GPT were required for adjustable BAR support, but I had no idea that the retarded control freak muppet posse that likes to play PC god totally removed VGA display support. It appears the new vBIOS is GOP-only. That may explain the reduction in ROM size. So, I won't be using it. Flashed back the old XOC firmware and everything is fine. Bastards. I have no intention of using UEFI instead of Legacy. To hell with that, LOL.
@iunlock @Johnksss (tagged you both as an FYI since I haven't seen you guys for a while... hope all is well.)
Who wants to make a bet that all of the new laptop trash with 30-series GPUs is going to have GPU firmware that lacks Legacy VGA/UEFI w/CSM? To hell with that, too. @Prema -?- -

Interesting story to share. Very upsetting, and it just goes to show the degree of dishonesty that exists.
I ordered a new new boxed retail 10900K from B&H Photo to replace the really crappy 10850K sample that I have in the binning bench. It needs 0.100 V more at 5.0GHz than my 10900KF needs for 5.2GHz. It was in stock and "ready to ship" (LOL) and they offered free "expedited shipping" for about $20 less than the best price from their competitors. It took them 7 days to process the order (so much for "expedited shipping" with such sucky processing lead time). I got it today, ordered it on 4/6. That really pissed me off. But, not nearly as much as when I opened the box they shipped it in and I found the seals had been broken on the CPU box... first red flag. It was supposed to be brand new. When I removed the CPU from the unsealed box, the second red flag was fingerprints on the top of the IHS. Within a matter of seconds I noticed that it looked like it had been delidded because of the sealant not being like the stock Intel application. Upon closer inspection, I noticed that the CPU under the 10900K IHS was not even an LGA 1200. Some dishonest bastard glued a 10900K IHS on an older CPU. The notches do not line up with the socket and they are on the wrong end for the pin #1 triangle. The orientation of the IHS was also 180° off from where the notches are located. There are more gold contacts on the edge of the PCB. After looking at photos on the web for comparison, it appears the IHS was mounted to a 4790K (or another variations of a 4th generation CPU).
It's unfortunate that someone would stoop this low. B&H is also a victim here. It's also unfortunate that B&H took a week to send it. That adds insult to injury. I got an RMA and they will wait to get the CPU back before doing anything about it. I asked for a refund rather than an exchange. I ordered one from Best Buy instead. Same price now. It will be here tomorrow. I have purchased from B&H in the past and had a good experience, but the fact that they sent me an open box CPU and didn't even bother to examine what was returned to them before sending it to me really sucks. I doubt I will consider doing business with them again in the future.
4790K CPU photo for reference...

Sad state of affairs these days. I can remember ordering a few outlet Alienwares that arrived with ES parts swapped in back in the day and Just in the last 18 months: somewhere in this thread is when I was shipped a clearly used and abused and dead 1300w PSU from Amazon warehouse. Then there's the seller who tried to scam me over a 9900ks on eBay, like "new" hepa filter that looked like it had been hit with a baseball bat. Refurbished Dell missing an OS/license and damaged screen...there's even more.
I used to be a big proponent of open box specials, but I've recently found myself shying away from used and sticking more to big box places. Even then you hope it can make it through shipping untouched.
When you said unsealed I assumed it was a binned and rejected CPU sent back but that takes it to a whole new level. Someone purposely delidded it, kept the CPU and slapped the old IHS on what is most likely their old CPU. That is just scummy behavior. I would be beyond livid just over a "new" item shipped clearly having been opened let alone the rest of it.
I've used B&H a few times and had no problems with them except for a defective open box motherboard I ordered and they took it back no problem.
Still shaking my head at this one.Clamibot, Papusan, Rage Set and 1 other person like this. -
Yes, that is outright fraud. No nicer way to put it. Someone deliberately committed a dishonest and technically illegal act. And, I bet the person that did it has done it more than once, and similar dishonest acts, because they are a waste of human DNA and are unworthy of the air they breathe.
I am a pretty reasonable and forgiving person about human error. Lord knows I make plenty of mistakes. We all do. At the end of the day I just wanted a CPU, and hoped I would get one that is better than the poorly binned dog I am using now. Had it been an open box/used CPU that was otherwise normal, I would have tested it for bin quality and kept it if it was good. Insisting on a new one might even result in getting a poorer silicon sample than the used one received. So, that part I probably would not even mention to this group. I'd just let it go and be thrilled about getting a nicely binned CPU sample and forget that it was an open box... who cares, LOL. Yes, I would still have told them I wasn't pleased about paying retail for a second-hand CPU and ask if they were interested in doing something about it in terms of a goodwill gesture of some sort. (I would want to know if I were in their shoes, as it affects business reputation.) If it had been a lousy sample (worse than the one I have now) then I would deem it unacceptable and insisted upon a refund or having it being replaced with a brand new CPU because that is what I paid for.
B&H obviously didn't have the QC in place that they should have had, but absent that lack of process on their part, they are as much of a victim here as I am. In fact, maybe even more so in that it tarnishes their good name, which I respected until now. I realize it could just be a rare one-off, too. But, it adds a different dynamic for them than it does me. This goes beyond a personality conflict between a customer and employee. Those things are going to always exist. I am not surprised that a dishonest customer screwed them, but I am a little bit surprised that they didn't have a process in place to properly handle returned products. It never should have been put back on the shelf and the fact that it wasn't looked at concerns me. I spotted a problem instantly, before I even removed it from the plastic clamshell. They should have and would have, had they bothered to check what was returned to them before putting it back on the shelf. This, and this alone, is the only reason I would have second thoughts about buying from them in the future. That said, I've already forgiven the mistake.Last edited: Apr 15, 2021Falkentyne, Clamibot, Papusan and 1 other person like this. -
This is going to occur more and more in general retail channels, unfortunately. It has happened to me with Amazon and I've stopped buying through their Warehouse program. Newegg and to some degree, Best Buy have procedures in place to qualify these returns. I am surprised B&H doesn't. I buy a lot of pre-owned lenses from them and they are always as described or better. That could be the problem. They are primarily a photo/video company that ventured into other consumer electronics to stay relevant. I'll keep your experience in the back of my mind when I order something from them that isn't photo/video related.electrosoft, Mr. Fox and Papusan like this.

MSI Z590-A Pro + 11700k:
--------------------------------------------------------------
So I'll be returning the MSI Z590 "Pro" (laugh) motherboard this weekend. It's a budget board alright....
It finally came in but it flat out won't boot with my stock XMP profile or anything around it even with super loose timings with my G.Skill B-die sticks while these same sticks have worked in 5 different boards @ XMP so far (B550M, X570, Z490, Z390 eVGA, Z390 AsRock). Gear 1 @ 3600 balks at anything below CL17-16-16-2T when this same memory with TM5 throwing up dozens of errors. Same memory runs in my MSI x570 @ CL14-14-14-1T no problem @ 1.5v. I could spend time with MSI's weird memory tweak issues but the main problem is:
The reviews showed it has a decent set of VRMs and handles an OC of 5-5.1ghz at the min but anything above ~1.3v and they overheat and throttle leaving this 11700k @ 4.8ghz tops indicating a not so great 11700k to go along with it.
I should have known better. Last Zed MSI board I tried was the same MSI Z490 Pro and it was DOA back in December and I swapped to a Z490 Strix which worked great.
If I do decide to do this all over again, I'm either going to just pick up a Z590 strix or most likely a Z590 FTW which is due for release in the next week or two and an 11900k as @ 4.8ghz with that sloppy memory timings single and all core the 11700k was worse than my 5800x in every aspect.
MSI x570 Tomahawk + 5800x:
-------------------------------------------------------------
On the other hand, a cmos reset and clean install has resulted in at least my Type-C port on my X570 passing the big tests. I copied 300GB of files back and forth both front and rear ports no problem numerous times over 3 external NVMe SSDs. I had a few hiccups on the USB-A ports, but that might be my Amazon essentials C to A cable. I ordered a few more cables and C to A adapters to finish up testing, but so far things are looking up.Last edited: Apr 16, 2021 -
Well, the first few minutes looks promising. The 10900K looks like it will be as good as (hopefully better than) my 10900KF and definitely much better than the 10800K. It runs totally fine using the same settings as the 10900KF, so that seems like a good sign.

Well, it takes a tiny bit more voltage than the 10900KF, but it's so close to the same it is hard to measure. I'm running it bare die on the chiller. I was about to convince myself it was inferior (still WAY BETTER than the 10850K) and then it dawned on me that I hadn't delidded it yet and that made all the difference in the world for the 10900KF. Same here... much cooler and uses less voltage because of the lower temps. And, I beat my best score on the 10900KF by a little bit, even though the memory is running 100MHz slower with looser timings.

It has to be bad contact. Bare die can be tricky to get the block to fit properly on the die, but once any contact issues are resolved nothing else works better. Getting the water block sitting flat and properly mating with the die was much more difficult on X299 for some reason. I am not sure why, but fitment is much easier with LGA 1200.Ashtrix, electrosoft, Rage Set and 1 other person like this.

I still do not like MSI. I dislike them even more than ASUS. But, I actually think that is a good idea for a couple of reasons. One is political so I won't mention it. The other is that is a great way of making it harder on GPU hoarders that deplete the supply for crypto mining. I am not sure how they could tell if it was used for that. If there is a way they can, I would say I hope more follow. If they cannot, then I think it is a questionable business practice.
Wow. That is super-stupid. Nobody with a properly functional brain would be dumb enough to pay that much for such a mundane CPU. Totally absurd.Clamibot, Papusan and electrosoft like this. -
These are the things I found on my build approach. Just thought to share.
Going for AIO - Noctua DH15 and DH15S both fit Z590 Dark (Horizontal Mounting), Maximus Apex XIII Z590, Crosshair Dark Hero X570. Why only these boards ? 8x SATA and somewhat premium boards with better VRM components and design and better BIOSes.
PCIe lane bifurcation and chipset, this is known to all but still - Z590 with CML gives direct CPU PCIe 16 lanes only and 4 chipset lanes. So any M.2 population onto the board will reduce the PCIe X16 GPU slot and downgrade it to x8 3.0 speed. With RKL, the M.2 slot which is connected to CPU directly is enabled on Z590 thus it gives x4 pcie 4.0 lanes to the NVMe SSD in addition to 16 for GPU which are 4.0 also the DMI is x8 3.0 which is same as X570 chipset x4 4.0.
Not that NVMe 4.0 matters a lot, these 2 videos show even better (esp any Z590 or X570 adding another PCIe device would cut the lanes to PCIe 4.0 x8 = PCIe 3.0 x16, on CML PCIe 3.0 x8), but a point to consider when CML and Zen 3 is considered for builds, esp when 10900K is a solid processor to buy for now as in present not future..
Windows 7 - All HW must have CSM option, here's a Phoronix page showing TGL and Sapphire Rapids is the time when Intel will yank that off from the BIOS colluding with M$ to kill Win7 and Legacy BIOS.
Goolag also extended the Win7 support to 2022 Jan 15, they extended only a few months - Look at it, it's Enterprise customers, once they remove it's over, sadly their Chromium is what Internet is nowadays, FF is imbecile and worse in terms of not following Google and their management is even horrible although the browser is quite good atm. So my guess is this gen might be the last gen to sport CSM BIOS, I would be happy to be wrong on this. For jokebooks, why even bother ? the HW itself is castrated garbage. Clevo with PREMA mods only are worthy, esp that AW trash which has CC which needs UWP garbage.
Intel
Looks like @Mr. Fox already helped a lot of folks at win-raid for their Z490 boards Win7 installation with his driver packs (except AX200 and AX210 Wifi) and there's an ISO too. Also Updatepack7R2 (Simplix) allows a direct xHCI driver stack from Win8.x ported to Win7, it already includes the drivers for Intel boards, so installing the MDL's AiO tool with Simplix integrated for Win7 ISO (this uses Win10+7 boot.wim file but Install.wim or install.esd compressed with all drivers loaded into it, the tool compresses it to esd too to help with direct FAT32 formatted thumbdrive to facilitate the boot from usb or even DVD) will boot the machines up, when using with a PCIe to PS/2 expander slot or PCIe to USB2.0 expander slot, also there's this GB tool which provides ISO creation help.
AMD
This is a bit of hassle, the AGESA BIOSes screw up a lot more than it's known to people, GB boards should not have problems using Updatepack7R2 with xHCI driver but with ASUS boards that will cause Startup lock with Win7, meaning need to use the canonkong modded AMD driver pack and integrate to the Win7 ISO
If using the SP1 MSDN ISO, the NVMe TRIM patch etc NVMe, SHA256 patch to enable updates, DX12 beta which also has DX11.1 patch - this is needed for Mafia DE and other games which enforce BS Win10 ONLY while running DX11 since they all work on Win8.1 without any DXVK dll bypass. So all these have to installed manually, idk if after installation to a SATA drive then adding NVMe drive and drivers of Samsung would be fine, plus if using Updatepack7R2 after installation, not sure about how that xHCI driver will mess with the AMD system causing it to lock up or not, I didn't found a way on to how to remove that from Updatepack7R2, one more user at Winraid is trying to do this, I'm being bombarded by all sorts of things related to the build process to find out more on that.
Stability - AMD still didn't publish any damn Datasheet for their X570 chipset, processors, damn absolutely nothing. Must use Corerecycler to check the platform stability with that PBO2 Curve Optimizer in BIOS and use some excel spreadsheet data from users to understand it all about the Zen 3 processor to have a 24.7 stability without any Prime95 rounding errors meaning one has to put a lot of work, its fun but not that much fun lol when you spend too much time. USB issues as per AMD's AGESA 1.2.0.2 says it was the fix (the nature of the problem is sporadic and unknown factors makes me doubtful on the whole issue), still trying to find information on that about how it is now. As for Intel, the RKL has Gear BS in their new IMC and memory systems which is causing high speed DRAM kits not to boot easily, apparently there's a limit to memory on gear 1 for Z590 and RKL. With the above boards one has to run Dual Rank DIMMs for 32GB memory which are expensive and fastest binned kits with low latency max out at 3800MHz (GSkill Trident Z Neo).
Rest we know, the RKL is too hot and OC headroom got nerfed on top of the price, sadly CML prices also now increased, last week 10900K was $420ish at Newegg with coupon now it's increased, BestBuy also shows more than MSRP $15+ on the original $500. 5900X is the only processor that's worth my money since it the top SKU right now on the mainstream market but it's not there in stock plus the CCD lottery is a mess with it as 5800X has single CCD it doesn't have that many cases of RMA WHEA incidents vs the higher core count processors.
AMD screwed up real bad with the BS TSMC stock problems and clocking them sky high on day 1 and now reduced them with AGESA for stability and other QC problems, while Intel sandbagged the RKL with 14nm++ and -2C/4T with insanely more power than CML 10C, the AVX512 will boost the RKL CPU to space with Emulation performance like RPCS3 (check out video below, yeah that is not possible on any processor) but the power consumption = nuclear reactor. And both raised price too...
Alder Lake with it's trash Atom Gracemont x86 cores and the new Golden Cove big cores lack AVX512, while AMD is going to get AVX512 with Zen 4 on the other hand lmao & both are rumors.
This year is really horrible for PC Builders no question if you add those stock related issues it's even nasty. With TSMC 7N news on the bs short supply is not giving more confidence as well, DDR5 will be expensive and not mature enough, same for PCIe Gen5, I'm hearing news that DDR5 and PCIe 5.0 will be SKU based, so expect Intel and AMD raise their prices even more all for the HW that really doesn't make any damn sense for the moment.Last edited: Apr 19, 2021Raiderman, Papusan, Mr. Fox and 1 other person like this. -

I have to admit, I was totally unimpressed by the Z490 Aorus Master and after RMA'ing it I really cannot picture myself buying anything else from them again. And, yes... their software was absolutely a joke. Their firmware wasn't much better. Their hardware is probably pretty decent, but when the firmware and software sucks, it's kind of difficult to find nice things to say about the hardware. I really hated that the "dual BIOS" was actually more like an emergency backup than a true manually selectable BIOS.

That looks fantastic, bro. I never would have asked about the black tubing because I don't think it looks bad at all. Looking forward to seeing more pics, especially with the room lights on. The red RAM fits perfectly with the motif. (Saying red RAM made me think of REDRUM - The Shining, LOL.)Rage Set likes this.

AFAIK there is no way to set PPD in the BIOS. But, yes, using MemTweakIt allows me to set it to zero. What does "veeting" mean?
I've dropped the RAM clock down to 4300 for mining. Running it at 4600 gets the RAM too hot during mining and will eventually cause a system reboot.

Thank you. I wanted to give AMD their due, even with all of their faults. I have a client, once he saw it, wanted it...until I told him how much I spent. LOL.
I am working on a script for the lighting. I want it to be off until a certain temp is reached. That was one of the reasons why I was going to go with Corsair fans, that type of functionality is built into their software.
Thanks bro. The RAM I purchased off of you is the reason why I went with this theme. Later today, I'll post photos of it in better lighting.electrosoft, Papusan and Mr. Fox like this. -

Crazy....I am within a few hundred points of my score with 2080 TI in SLI....

Your graphics score is actually better. The Physics and Combined scores are just a tad higher with the 7980XE than the 5900X (which makes perfect sense with more cores/threads and +500MHz clock speed). If not for that I think you would be beating the overall score. Nice job.

Is there any way to unlock the overclocking features on an Asus Prime H270m Plus motherboard so I can overclock my i7 7700K?
I understand there may be risks involved, but at this point, I'm not going to get a Z270 motherboard when I can get a Z590 motherboard for only a little bit more. Unfortunately I got this motherboard before I knew that overclocking was only supported on Z series motherboards. At the time, I thought all you needed was an unlocked CPU.
I understand the risks. I just want to push my hardware to the max for some fun.

I am not aware of a way to do it. I think that is locked at the chipset level.Clamibot likes this.

Welp that sucks. Thanks for the quick and straightforward answer.
The way people were answering this question on other forums suggested they knew something but were unwilling to share. Now I can just look forward to overclocking with a new CPU whenever I get one.
I'll make sure to get a Z series chipset this time.

Intel's better chips is still somewhat relevant. As a budget alternative, and only for gaming LOOL
And I hope Intel don't change strategy with Alder lake and 50% phone cores

I added the important part that you missed above. There are still a couple of areas where AMD is unable to complete at the same level with Intel.
I purchased a used higher-grade motherboard for the binning bench and 10900K. I was going to sell the 10850K and Prime Z490-M mobo, but maybe I should just place both back into their boxes and hang onto them for a while. I don't expect to see anything truly amazing from the red or blue team for a long time. And, if I am wrong, chances are that they will be hard to acquire due to limited availability and so grossly overpriced that only an idiot would buy them if they can actually find scalpers that have them for sale.Rage Set, Clamibot, electrosoft and 2 others like this.
