It is the opposite in our home. My hearing is as good as my wife's, although she would undoubtedly say mine is selective, LOL. She is very sensitive to and agitated by certain sounds. Not only high frequency, but also crunchy and crackling sounds drive her up the walls and she goes nuts even at the sound of herself eating salad or chips. Using scissors to stealthily open a noisy plastic bag that one would normally just pull open from opposing sides (like a bag of chips) is required to avoid her wrath. No matter how gingerly or swiftly you may try, you are "fondling" the wrapper and she races out of earshot. She often uses white noise to drown out what she finds annoying, while I find white noise to quickly become part of my normal environment and it essentially becomes non-existent and ineffective to me.
While I can hear faint sounds that she can barely hear, I can and do tune out almost anything that is not essential to the object of my focus, even when it is abnormally loud and obnoxious. So, to that degree the accusation that I have selective hearing is pretty accurate.Last edited: May 6, 2021Vasudev, electrosoft, Talon and 2 others like this. -

I'll side with your wife since I don't want to get a earful and go deaf!
I really like hearing server's max fan noise but I hate when the fans spins so quickly that the sharp sound nearly rips your eardrums. -
Oooooh, sweet. Gonna have to grab that Metro Exodus update. Thanks for the heads up. That also gives me a good excuse to play it again, too. I haven't touched it in a long time but really liked it.
This showed up already. Now I have to find time to install it.

Believe it or not I'm still tidying up my desk, turns out I had neglected cable management for too long, reorganizing my pc's to be better suited for the Texas heat when it eventually hits.
Found out a bit more about the desktop my boss is giving me. I7 5820 / 64gb ram / 1650 super / 1tb ssd
Not sure if I have a purpose for it at the moment, I guess it would depend on the motherboard he used. If it's a decent board I suppose I could weigh it against my dual cpu workstation for plex or just throw my m4000 quadro + k2200 and try to sell /trade for another 5700 xt

Definitely looking forward to your results, congrats!
They're already on eBay in multiples along with a few KPE 3090's at outlandish prices brand new. -
Thanks. Why am I not surprised by that? But, I am wondering (if not EVGA) how anyone on eBay even has access to multiples to offer up for sale. Something is kind of fishy about that. It really stinks to have to always be so cynical about everything, but I think we all have every reason to believe the worst about most things now simply because of how much non-stop nonsense we all have to put up with on a daily basis.
I am thinking a really good test of effectiveness is going to be how hot the RAM gets while mining. With the hybrid cooler the RAM often reaches 90°C and I end up stopping the process for a while for it to cool down, then resume. That's even with an AC-powered fan blowing full blast on the backplate. It will be interesting to see if any improvement comes with the full water block and, if so, how much.electrosoft, Rage Set and Papusan like this. -
The guy I bought the 5700XT off of was talking about how he spent 3 nights sleeping in the Microcenter parking lot in order to get a 3070.
The sick thing is he wanted a 3080 lol. I made sure not to poke fun though he gave me a (at current rates) good deal. Though not sure if I would be happy with a 3070 after losing 3 days of work sleeping in a Microcenter parking lot.electrosoft, Mr. Fox and Papusan like this. -
Got it installed. Pretty straightforward and painless. I can tell the vRAM is going to be a lot cooler and I haven't even done any testing yet. That will follow shortly.
I am puzzled that it seems there is no lighting whatsoever except the EVGA K|NGP|N logo on top by the water ports. I looked at a few photos in EVGA forums and did not notice photos showing any other lighting on other systems as well. I tried updating Precision X1 and installed LED Sync and it seems there is none. I don't know if this is correct or what. If so, that seems pretty odd. It will be the first Hydro Copper I have owned that has no lighting options. I have the cable plugged in and the logo does light up, but that's it.
alaskajoel, Ashtrix, electrosoft and 1 other person like this. -
Yeah, this is definitely huge. It has been mining while I took my 3.5 hour nap before getting ready for work and the vRAM is about 12-15°C cooler than it would normally be. Mining makes GPU and system RAM hotter than anything I have seen before. It really stresses out the RAM for some reason.
That really blows.

Oddly enough, the Hydro Copper is not only keeping the 3090 vRAM about 10-15°C cooler, my office is MUCH cooler without the VRM and vRAM fan and heat sinks pumping hot air into it. I'm shocked by how much cooler my office is now after about 7 hours of crypto mining... remarkable.
-
Yeah, this is really good. Now I am at over 8 hours of sustained crypto-mining load since installing the Hydro Copper and essentially no change in GPU core or vRAM temperatures from the first 30 minutes. Impressive. The GPU memory would be bouncing between 88 and 90°C with the hybrid air cooling on the power and memory before.

From what I understand Ethereum favors memory speed over strictly brute force core overclocking. Its why the Radeon VII is neck and neck with a 3080 despite its age.
If the 3080 is still available when I get off from work then I will attempt going to Microcenter for one, otherwise I still have the 3rd 5700 XT for tomorrow. -
Yes, that is absolutely accurate. What you have heard is correct. Bitcoin mining is definitely about memory speed, not core clocks. Overclocking the core does almost nothing really. It helps a tiny bit, but any gains are very small and they are offset by increased power consumption, and that cancels out the gain. Just like the concept of making more money is useless and of no benefit if your take-home is the same or less due to increased taxes... who cares if there is no benefit. (Yes, the government benefits from the added revenue available to be squandered on frivolous unimportant programs and mismanaged on the important things, LOL.)
The same is also true of system memory when you are mining using the CPU. The memory clock increases the hash rate and the system memory starts making heat in ways I have never before witnessed. I've never had my system RAM get too hot to touch, but if I have it running at 4600 and mine using the CPU it gets crazy hot. Dropping it down to 4000 decreases the hash rate a bit, but the temperatures come back down closer to normal.
That said, be sure to pay close attention to your GPU memory temps regardless of what GPU you are using for mining. You can easily cook it to death. As you can see in my photos, I have two fans (one big desk fan) blowing on the backplate. Even with that extra airflow, it still gets very hot. Without the help of those fans, the system will either freeze or go into a thermal shutdown due to the vRAM overheating. GDDR5 and GDDR6 get pretty toasty as well, but GDDR6X running at 21GHz+ turns the GPU into a space heater when the memory is pegged under 100% load and is just left there. The GDDR6 on the 2080 Ti doesn't get nearly as hot running at "only" 16GHz, but the hash rate is about half that of GDDR6X at 21GHz.
Here is an example. I can't mine using the CPU on WHEEZER because the vRAM hits 95°C due to the use of a unified heat sink (the heat from the CPU overheats the GPU). But, it clearly shows how much warmer the memory gets with GDDR6X vs GDDR6. It's also interesting that the turdbook's 2060 is pulling almost identical watts as the 2080 Ti, but producing half as much BTC. The 3090 is producing about double what the 2080 Ti does, but it pulls 200W more power than the 2080 Ti. My Kill-A-Watt meter on the system with the 2080 Ti is hovering at 400W (CPU is running at 5.0GHz, RAM at 4000MHz) while the meter on the system with the 3090 is hovering at 650W (CPU running at 5.2GHz, RAM at 4200MHz).
That 76°C reading on VRAM T. on the bottom system used to be 88-90°C.Last edited: May 7, 2021Ashtrix, electrosoft, Clamibot and 2 others like this. -
My KP has been sitting to be quite honest and I'm seriously thinking of selling it even though I put my name in the queue for the gpu block. The wait for the block turned me off. I likely won't get the block until some time in the middle of the summer, since I was so late in getting added to the queue.
I probably used the card a total of five hours, one of which was playing an hour of CP2077.

There might be hope for getting one sooner than you think. The self-reporting tracking was a mix of people that ordered a Hydro Copper version of the GPU rather than the block. My impression from reading things in that thread linked above is that most of those reporting the notification registration timestamp are those hoping to snag a GPU. So, who knows. I could be wrong, but that was the impression I got. No dice on the 3080, oh well lol I was able to get some pcie risers, pcie power adapters and such though and also replace my g502 so while not a trip I probably would've done but still ultimately a success lol

48GB RAM (16GBx2/8GBx2)
1TB SSD
2TB HDD

I was actually hoping this would have some xeon v3 CPU so that i wouldnt need to make a decision on what pair I should get for my 7810. I should be able to fit 2x 5700XT's in each easily enough. Adding a 3rd to each would need some creative solution. After that I suppose i'll be at my GPU limit.
Got some pcie risers and power adapters as well to accommodate that.
Ill have some fun with throttlestop on that system at the very least. Quite an interesting week regarding free hardware.

Looking at the pics, I was unsure if there was any extra lighting options outside of the top K|NGP|N logo. This just confirms it. But it is nice to see overall card cooling. It will be more interesting if you run it chilled and see how it benches if it gets a break from being one of the seven dwarfs atm. When all is said and done, good buy? bad buy? -
I would definitely buy it again. Since it is the only GPU block available I am very glad that it works so well. I am very pleased with its performance. I really do not like the hybrid AIO at all. I also hated the hybrid cooler on the 2080 Ti FTW3.

I'm on the fence with the block after early results, no extra lighting and overall ho hum reductions especially at ambient. I know i'm up next most likely since @Mr. Fox and I are a second apart in the queue. I'm more irritated at Blizzard/Nvidia now because of the persistent driver bug that continues to produce texture flickering while playing in many zones randomly. It has been almost 6 months now and they still haven't fixed the texture flickering bug in their drivers and/or Blizzard hasn't compensated since the post 457.31 drivers dropped. Every subsequent 457.31 driver set notes the bug but hasn't done a thing to fix it.
I've been playing lots of WoW on mine, but I still have the itch to give AMD a run but the 6900xt / 6800xt prices are pretty outlandish atm. Of course with the prices of KPE 3090s I could offset the major cost but still.
Two showcase builds would have been nice to see but market conditions can quickly produce a "so over it," point of view easily.
Lest we forget the Shuffle pricing of the day:

I skipped the 2080ti KP so I can not recall how much that block cost, but the fact remains they regressed in options by removing what would be an optional "icing on the cake" feature in RGB lighting. That doesn't make sense for what is their showcase, top dog GPU offering.
Your response was apt. -

What is the general opinion of x299?
I have an i7 9800X but its castrated in a Dell Precision 5820, unless I missed it, no workstation system has capability of overclocking so while temps are nice @ 4.1Ghz (max 8 core turbo) it really seems a waste in that system for what I plan to do with it (Mining).
Is it worth attempting to slowly build a system around this? Or should I just leave it alone / possibly sell it off.Mr. Fox likes this. -
X299 is freaking awesome and that's totally wrong about overclocking. Now, overclocking with Dell mobo, BIOS and power supply will probably be like peeing into a headwind. You'd need to grab a much better PSU and either an X299 Dark or Rampage mobo to give that CPU proper support, but the platform itself is arguably the best option available, even today, for truly extreme overclocking. As a general rule, that is going to apply to anything sold by Dell/Alienware, as their stock parts are as worthless as tits on a boar if you want to do any serious overclocking. You'd probably kill the stock mobo and/or PSU, and might even catch them on fire (literally).
My 7980XE CPU alone would easily yank over 1,000 watts of power from the wall during Cinebench runs. My 1600W PSU was just barely enough for the 7980XE and shunt modded 2080 Ti FTW3.
The only reason I don't have this anymore is I had taken it as far as I could without dumping money and time into LN2 overclocking and I got bored with doing the same thing over and over, and over again, after reaching the edge of its functional capacity with chilled water. I downgraded to Z490 just so I could have something new and exciting to conquer.

I dont mean x299 on its own generally speaking but for overclocking in the workstation that it came with. I can force the max core frequency in throttlestop but it wont go above that at all. Runs really cool though. The power supply is fine for my purposes, its 950w Gold. Cant overclock it at all to begin with, seems to be a BIOS imposed limit which is par for the course in workstations.
Ill hold on to it for a while and see what comes of it, I dont have much space right now for more desktops plus I plan to disable most of the cores to reduce power consumption.
In other news I got the 2x Red Devil cards into the 5820 case, the 7810 will probably require more creative solution but we will soon see how that goes. Waiting on my brother in law to get back in town so that I can modify my DA-2 ac adapters to pcie 8 pins. I dont have enough cables from the power supply to satisfy everything without overtaxing the cables. Should come out to be 280Mh/s for daily average.

Intel just launched Tiger Lake H45 chips.
And unlike the garbage they have shipped since Haswell mobile, they are unlocking both memory and partial core overclocking on the non HK SKUs. Finally companies might be pulling their heads out of their asses, if only a bit. -
Intel Launches Eight Core Tiger Lake-H Processors: Higher Power Consumption, Lower Clocks tomshardware.com
Intel also made some compromises on the memory front, too. First, the memory controllers no longer support LPDDR4X. Instead, they top out at DDR4-3200, and that's actually not the case for most of the 11th-Gen lineup, at least if you want the chip to run in the fastest configuration.
The eight-core Tiger Lake die comes with the System Agent Geyersville just like the Rocket Lake desktop chips. That means the company has brought Gear 1 and Gear 2 memory modes to laptops. The optimal setting is called 'Gear 1' and it signifies that the memory controller and memory operate at the same frequency (1:1), thus providing the lowest latency and best performance in lightly-threaded work, like gaming. All of the Tiger Lake chips reach up to DDR4-2933 in this mode.
Tiger Lake-H does officially support DDR4-3200, but only with the 'Gear 2' setting that allows the memory to operate at twice the frequency of the memory controller (2:1), resulting in higher data transfer rates. This can benefit some threaded workloads but also results in higher latency that can lead to reduced performance in some applications — particularly gaming. We have yet to see a situation where Gear 2 makes much sense for enthusiasts/gamers.
Pushing peak power beyond 110W
Yeah, the TGP mess from Nvidia is now adopted by Intel. Only God know what you'll get for your next Joke-book..
I have to laugh at those who thought we would get cooler running processors in laptops once we get rid of the old 14nm+++++++, LOOL
Dell gave up the unlocked Tiger lake HK for their coming high end gamingbooks as AW m15 6th gen.

So as rumored that Gear 1 and Gear 2 is here to stay. From what I learnt G1 on Single Rank or Dual Rank 3800MHz+ tight timings on RKL 11900K is VERY hard so 4000MHz C15/16 is probably impossible I do not know if it's same for all Die from Samsung B Die / Hynix DJR / Micron. So people are simply exploring both Single Rank and Dual Rank kits with 4500MHz+ on Gear 2.
And now with TGL the official G1 spec is even further dropped from 3200 G1 RKL LGA1200 to pathetic 2933 mode. This is awful. They don't even have any "Infinity Cache" magic here too, but they claim it's faster than 10th gen CML BGA trash and AMD Ryzen Zen 3 BGA trash as well in gaming. Perhaps this Willow Cove on 10nmSF is a right step in direction ? but "World's Fastest Single Threaded Mobile Processor" that's what Intel claims.
Next we already know the H will be locked down garbage, and then on top the HK is probably a test to check how 10nmSF works with Intel and their Clock speed requirements but it's all BGA dumpyard so it barely even matters, LGA silicon will definitely be binned better on Alder Lake since it's also 10nmSF, until that comes we will probably never know how their 10nm is vs 14nm++. I still think Intel could have made RKL on 10nmSF and get those 2C4T but they didn't, makes me think the 10nmSF IS probably bad for Freq scaling ? Gotta wait until that Alder Joke lands...Rage Set, electrosoft and Papusan like this. -
We will have to see how it lands. But it does not look so encouraging. The 50% phone cores on Alder lake is a huge side step for multithread performance. And Intel's 10nm will probably eat a lot power in same way as 14nm++++ if they shall compete with AMD.

Yes, it is a blessing and a curse. I haven't traveled for business since the stupid COVID lockdown started, but I always visited when they had a location nearby, spend money and killed at least several hours for one night on every trip to a city that had one. I'd skip dinner and stay until closing time. I have been to the stores in Dallas and Houston and Denver probably about a dozen times each. I've only visited the Westmont (Chicago suburb) store once because it was never conveniently located to where I was working. The Chicago Metro location was never within reasonable driving distance during my travels. I have been to the Tustin (CA) store 3 or 4 times. I visited the Overland Park (KS) store once or twice.Clamibot, Rage Set, electrosoft and 2 others like this.

Same. Westmont is my store, about 25 min drive from my house but I somehow find myself running errands in the area and pop over just to look around.Rage Set, electrosoft and Mr. Fox like this.

Have you been able to get the new Metro Exodus to run? I can't get it to launch on any of my systems. I keep getting this stupid error, but when I check the minium system requirements all of my system meet the requirements. I just installed the latest driver thinking that was the deal, but nope. Same stupid error.

Wish I could dislike that. Ya I've had no issues at all launching the game.
