What? This sucks. I frequent these boards almost daily to check in and mostly see what's going on here in the desktop space. We really need to find an alternative or setup some sort of official discord channel. Unfortunately nothing like reddit or discord can truly replace real boards. There are years of experience, reviews, write ups, fixes, etc all right here on these boards. Losing all of that work and experience is really going to suck.

Thankfully most of you are part of the HWBot Team, so I can 100% keep in touch with those people, but for others, it will be a bit more difficult, but I'll figure it out here soon.

I don't want to drag the current conversation away, but I've wanted to get the TS Team Edition on Prema's Wordpress site, but the link seems to be dead. Does anyone here have a working link for me to use?

Also, that 8700k near me that I mentioned earlier went down to 100 USD which I personally think is a steal now. If it's still there by this weekend, I'll probably go pick it up. I've got a few SODIMM DDR4 2666mhz sticks that I can use to test to make sure it works in my P870DM as I know some have noted issues when using Coffee Lake chips with slower memory in these machines.

Why is it that the things I like keep disappearing? This is depression inducing.

First we had the end of standard MXM, then the presumed end of DTRs, now my most favorite forum of all is closing? This forum is pure gold! There's so much knowledge contained here.

It's as if the entire world is conspiring against excellence in an effort to turn everything medicore or to garbage.

DTRs are dead. The opportunities for desktop build (parts) in Norway are limited and the prices are high. I want to buy cheap used graphics cards for benching to the 4000 series graphics cards are available. Hence not on the list.

The desktop replacement will be a supplement to my laptops. Evga parts are out of reach (RMA takes too long and higher prices here can not be defended). And I have to put +30% fee/taxes on top of this + the shipping if I order outside Norway. This is not an option due to the mentioned restrictions. And we have a 5 year free warranty on this type of electronic/parts which is lost if I order parts outside Norway.

Chassis - Corsair 7000D Airflow Big Tower Black
Psu - ASUS ROG THOR 1200, 1200W PSU (Corsair HX1200, 1200W PSU is another option if thats better).
Mb - ASUS ROG MAXIMUS Z690 EXTREME, LGA1700 Motherboard
    Ram - Corsair Dominator Platinum DDR5 5600MHz 32GB
    CPU - 12900K
New Build Nr.1 wishlist. DTRs is DEAD. - Around $3,496.38 US Dollar

I thought about a corsair 1000D but this chassis will be over double of the price of the Corsair 7000D Airflow I put in the wishlist.

Cooling - Alphacool Eisbaer Aurora 420 CPU or Alphacool Eisbaer Pro Aurora 420 CPU AIO. Maybe easier for me sell the RGB mess on the Norwegian used market if I swap cooling.
Cooling wishlist - Around $210 US Dollar.

Arctic Liquid Freezer II 420 is avialble here home and for cheaper than the Alphacool Eisbaer Aurora 420 I have in the wishlist. What to select? Performance over design/noise.

Without GPU - $3710 US Dollar.

A new GPU (custom 3080 Ti - 3090 FE) will be from $2,395.39 for a good 3080 Ti card to $2,987.09 for the FE). This will later come on top. Swap the specs to 4000 series. Only to show what will be added on top of the build.

Total $6110 and up to $6710 for the 3090/4090 setup. I want to wait with the GPU until 4000 series is out.

Any comments for the two different PSU options, Ram and the cooling (maybe another AIO. I prefer 420mm). As I said. The options is very limited here home.

PSU Since you are anyways waiting for the new GPUs, the new PCIe5.0 16 pin (12pin Molex Nvidia Ampere + 4 Sense pins) are going to be standard now. The OCP will trigger these 1200W if you push the incoming Raptor Lake processors to peak AND new 4000 / RDNA 3 GPUs rumors are showing at 500W+ TDP, It's a miracle how 3090 and other cards are being cooled on Air right now, with 4000 it will be even bigger innovative fans and cooling for sure as they will get Air cooled due to added cost for AIO and rads in the GPU kits (Kingpin EVGA for eg is too expensive)

So probably waiting for better new PSUs is a good choice I guess...

ASUS ROG LOKI power supplies to feature ‘full’ 16-pin PCIe Gen5 power connector for GeForce RTX 3090 Ti

But also Be Quiet launched a new PSU to compete against Corsair's fully Digital AX1600i, Anandtech got it reviewed, I think it's dual rail. Does a fairly solid job, too expensive unfortunately but just a glimpse to the future of PSUs... with new PCIe standard however it misses the 4 Sense pins for some reason.

Motherboard why EXTREME ? I do not think you will use a lot of it's features like they shoved all those Thunderbolt and all the bells it has, it's too costly tbh, maybe APEX ? Also 4 DIMM populated DDR5 means less DRAM clockspeed over all plus this is generation one DDR5 so Dual Rank gets more shafted here.... Wait for a Z790 APEX maybe ?

Also wait for Z790 Chipset we will know if Intel wants to keep the LGA1700 socket alive for more than 2 CPUs, DLVR is also new feature rumored for these new chipsets, plus you get more DDR5 ICs and with AMD's XMP rival RAMP we will be getting better DRAM DIMMs for sure. I really didn't read much on the DDR5 except for some basic coverage because I was not having any interest in Intel's new small core BS formula and BGA BS.

Plus new AMD Zen 4 is looking very strong as well. Intel adding more Cache than real P cores for that dumpster gaming performance.

Intel Raptor Lake’s Digital Linear Voltage Regulator (DLVR) could reduce CPU power up to 25%

Mainstream nowadays is made into gaming this that BS. I'm tired of this formula AMD also downplayed X3D into only 1 SKU shamelessly, Gaming is a nice and must have thing but that's not the only damn thing in the CPU. Where are the I/O lanes ?? They could have extended the ATX to SSI-CEB standards and get us PLX chips for that X16 5.0 PCIe CPU lanes, split properly for NVMe drives or such. Maybe AMD AM5 X670 will have more I/O dunno.

Case Does Norway have Fractal ? Meshify 2 XL has front panel made of plastic and metal mesh unlike Corsair's full Metal. But it has more robust design in terms of HDD bays and over all ease of use with multi rads I guess, probably if that's cheap you can have a look at it... 7000D $70 more expensive than Fractal Meshify2XL in US.

AIO Sadly Noctua's new NF-A series type 140mil fans are not yet out, this company delays a damn lot. Their Chromax NFA12s took so much time to arrive. So all these 420mm AIOs we have to forcibly settle with these stock options only unfortunately.

For the performance and other aspects of these... I'm myself a big time learner and newbie, maybe other veterans here are best for that, the below is from Computex 2019 !!

    Thanks.

Does anyone know what choices I have for PSU with the new PCIe standard with the 4 Sense pins?

Still not put in stone but I'm not sure the Apex is the best choice.

EVGA is out of question due lots of minor problems I have seen. Also slow with good corrected firmware. RMA/shipping time back and forwards will be a nightmare, I can't use the free 5 years FREE of charge warranty. On top pay the higher price point due Norwegian greed (taxes on top of everything). Yep at premium for Norwegian government, LOOL

Have waited long enough to build something new. Waited on Clevo with Alder lake/MXM and know its (dead end). Laptops is dead for me now. 100% of them are garbage. Have good enough laptops but want a new main machine. Need it to fill some of my long days (retired as you know, hard enough sit looking on ugly Norwegian weather, look on the wall and have days with ill health and can't do much more than walk with the dogs). Yep, sometimes can the life be hard.
We have the Meshify 2 XL and it won't be much more expensive but for me I saw more benfits from the 7000D. But it seems I will go for the 1000D. To cut costs I have put custom cooling on Ice a bit (can use a lots of fans, 420 mm + nice Norwegian weather, LOOL). Same also wait for 4000 graphics. Then I can spend some more money on the chassis as the 1000D. I will look after cheapest graphics cards for fun. I'm not a gamer and won't buy 3080/90 series for premium this near the end of this gen cards.

I still like the powerful EK Vardar fans. I have used them the last years and are happy with them.

Again, thanks for the nice reply :)

I still wonder what option I should go for 2x16GB DDR5 ram.

Right now, Hynix DDR5 is the way to go. It overclocks the highest and easiest. Samsung DDR5 that I have is OK, but Hynix is KING right now. You can literally buy the cheapest Dell DDR5 green PCB sticks, slap a cheap waterblock cooling kit on them from Amazon and overclock them much higher than my $409 Trident Z5 6000 CL36 sticks. Just make sure to get Hynix. :)

Can't go wrong with the 7000D. There is the Phanteks Ethroo Pro 2 which is what I use but it has increased in price by $30USD.

I agree with @Ashtrix to wait on the PSU depending on the GPU you select. If it is a 3000 series (non 3090ti potentially), a traditional PSU will get it done. I used an HX1200 before I switched to Seasonic as I vastly preferred their cabling.

I use an AC LF II 420 and it definitely gets the job done but with that 7000D, you could always start with a small custom loop with room for expansion especially with HWbot and benching.

If constant and tweaked BIOS updates is your thing, Asus really is the way to go. The sheer amount of BIOS work they do and their presence on the overclock forums is a major plus. I don't know if I would spend $650USD on the Z690 classified and I have no idea what the Z690 Dark is going to ring in at. Plus the Dark will be dual DIMM slotted by default as it really should be for Z690 if you want to push your memory properly.

As for ram, we are so used to Samsung being the king but Hynix right now is God mode for Z690. You definitely want 2x16GB not 4x8GB as T is basically dead (or close to it) for Z690 and Daisy rules supreme.

    This in spades.

As for GPU, with ADL supposedly les than 10 months away it will come down to when your system gets built out and hoping the shortages won't be a problem. You could also wait and use ADL to hopefully find and score a decently priced 3000 series.

    Case - 7000D is a good choice
The 1000D is heavy brother @Papusan , it could cause a back injury if you try to lift it alone. Currently I'm running it with 2x480mm (55mm thick), 1x420mm rad (30mm thick), 2xd5 pumps, 1x reservoir, 18 Corsair ML 120 fans (non-RGB 4.2mm H2O) and 6 Corsair ML 140 fans (non-RGB 4.2mm H2O). I wear a supporter when lifting it because it weighs around 40kg (I think) with the side panels removed, all the components inside and water inside the reservoir/tubes/blocks.

    Motherboard - Z690 Apex or MSI Unify-X
IMO the Maximus Extreme is expensive and the use of four dimms will significantly lower the speed that you can run. Also, the Apex has a native PS2 port just in case you want to install Win7 and run the older 3dmark benchmarks. Well to be fair, my first Apex (Z490) had a defective 2nd bios chip. The Z690 Apex that I have received too has QCode A0 but with the GPU debug led light on. I was never able to boot on any bios apart from 0231, so I rma-ed it. Right now, I am using a second Z690 Apex and it is working fine. I'll probably go with MSI next generation.

    Ram - Hynix
Unable to find this one in my country. I am currently using G.Skill 6000 C40. I thought Dominator Plats 5600 are using Micron, but was wrong.

    PSU - Corsair HX1200
If you have a case that has the psu visible, then I would understand the ROG Thor use-case.

    Thanks :)
Regarding the chassis. Will stand on wheels either directly on the chassis or a wheel stand. I think I never will need to lift it much. Only move it on the wheels. I like both the 7000D and the 1000D. But the bigger is over double the costs. But have better choices for how you want it to be. And I don't change taste over night or change out if I like the style and the quality of the products. Good products will have a long life here home.

In the older days I liked it huge. And I still does.
Thanks. I know the benefits with 2 ram slots. Any reason you suggest MSI Unify-X ? Have never been a fan of MSI. Neither for Gigabyte. Have it in the Ivy Bridge setup. Not the best choice. Hate the UI, HW design and firmware. + Probably other flaws I don't like, HeHe

I used this brand in the older days and was happy with that.
Abit Says Farewell to Motherboards | Tom's Hardware
Regarding the Corsair Dominator Platinum DDR5 5600MHz... We haven't many choices here. Hence I put in that one. Seems the better choice vs other. But I'm open to sugestions for what to buy. I can see if I find them for sales here. And we still have the lottery of what brand chips it contains.

At least this one is Micron. But have seen Samsung memory as well from Igors lab. Not sure how you think about this ram sticks (I have already in my wishlist).

If the worst happen. What is the ranking of Hynix, Micron and Samsung with DDR5? Same rank as I wrote? Or Micron last?
The Corsair HX1200 is around $57.06 cheaper than the ROG Thor(both 1200W). As long there is no benefits then maybe go for the cheaper one. I mean have read that the ROG Thor is an mod Seasonic PSU. Could be wrong on that. But if it is then a great advantage. Seasonic is on the upper level regarding quality.

    Thanks :)

The Unify-X has always been an alternative to the Apex, Aorus Tachyon and Evga Kingpin Dark. It also has dual-dimm slots, native PS2 (need to use a splitter) and great ram overclocking capability. The Rookie League leaderboard on hwbot is being rocked right now and the leader is using a Unify-X along with an Adata DDR5 overclocked to 7000Mhz.

The ranking should be Hynix > Samsung > Micron. The Plats you linked are running 5200 and are using Micron. so I thought the 5600 are also using Micron.

It was a collaboration between Asus and Seasonic. I think it is okay too but the OLED and RGB warranty are only 3years. Also, you need a case that makes the PSU visible :)

Thanks. I see them have it home. A lot cheaper as well here home. Could also be one of the reasons people buy it over the more expensive boards. But two mem slots help a lot if the manufacturer have done a good job with the PCB and signal routing. Cheap doesn't always say or mean bad quality.
But overall, not sure how it sticks above the others. Never been a fan of the brand.
Yep, a Lottery as Igors lab said. He also mentioned... The fact that you can sometimes achieve a significant acceleration with DDR5 in applications with a preference for high transfer rates is actually already cold coffee. With SKUs from DDR5-5600 upwards, you can currently expect these memory ICs with certainty, and above 6000 Mbps you will almost certainly find the even faster Hynix chips, be it from Corsair or other RAM manufacturers.

Corsair also offers fast SKUs, beyond 6000 Mbps in XMP and most likely with Hynix 16 Gbit M-Die as IC.

And I'm not so good in winning in the different lotteries. I lose money each time, HaHa

Thanks. You mean 3 years warranty on the OLED and RGB and up to 5 or above for the rest? Here home. Anything that is meant to last 2 year or above is 5 years warranty. On everything. If the manufacturer offer longer then it's that that count. And yep, RGB in all sorts of colors ain't my style. Neither need I special features for something that only have on thing to fix.

BE QUIET! DARK POWER PRO 12 1500W Netzteil (BN312) cost around $57 above the Rog Thor and +$100 above the Corsair HX1200w.

True it doesn't stand out, I think that's because Asus increased the prices of their boards by around 50%. To be honest, I didn't know other alternatives (aside from Evga Dark) to the Apex until Buildzoid mentioned Unify-X and Aorus Tachyon.

That PSU is a much better choice :) It's also a top-tier psu.

I just bought a Evga 1300G+ and it is very nice, they also use that heavy duty C19 power cable as well. I much prefer it over my Seasonic 1200 Prime platinum.

Another good PSU is the Evga 1300GT.

The 1300G+/1600G+/2000G+ are all in the same lineup and look very similar to one another. I have no doubt the lower rated models could pull the higher levels. Since they are all built the same, and all use the C19 this is what sort of hints to this.

I'm using the Asus X690 Extreme as I like a lot of the option it has for when I'm not over clocking. The Glacier is too expensive and I know me...It would not have lasted long with the water chiller running as it's to easy for condensation to build up in places you would not think to look. The Apex looked really good, but they did not have it at my Microcenter at the time plus I wanted the slower 4 Dimm slots. 10G ethernet. Dimm.2 slots as I had an extra Dimm.2 card laying around. The digital display because I use that quiet a bit. I do miss the PS2 port, but my Windows 7 USB boots fine with this board, plus I have the PS2 card if I need to use that to boot. It does not have all the Windows 7 drivers, that's for sure! Memory overclocking seems sketchy, but then I still need to do way more testing with that. USB ports seem super sketchy under Windows 7. And not to forget the push button release for the PCIE slot! This should be on all boards!

PSU I'm still running old faithful EVGA 1600W Super Nova with 10 year warranty, so I'm no help there. (It's going into it's 6th year now I think. Rock solid!)

I like the I deal of having the wattage meter on the unit, but I would not be able to see it due to where the PSU sits in the wet bench, but in a case it would look awesome to me. Provided the case in in a location you can actually see that screen. Being a bencher I would always go for more watts. You never know down the road what you may find to bench and come to find out your power supply is not up to the task at hand. You might find 3090's for dirt cheap or 2080 TI's for a steal in 2 years and your 1200 watt PSU will definitely not run those at full power for very long. (Word of advice. Do not cheap out on PSU)

Now if I could afford it, I would get the 1000D. That case is totally awesome with plenty of room for everything. Including 2 side by side radiators, dual Type C ports on top, double tempered glass swing doors, hidden cables...Just to name a few things off the top of the head. Now if price is an option then maybe the 7000D would work out better.

Memory, nothing to add here. as others have mentioned what are very good options and advice. Along with what you can actually find at the time of purchase.

    PS:
Don't listen to Mr temp00876 1500W PSU. LOL He does not want you passing him in the benchmarks.

    Edit:
I take it back. I see where it was mentioned that the 1500W option was the better solution.
    sorry brother. :D

Also, FYI if anyone is interested. People are panic selling their (40.3 tflop) 3090 Kingpin’s for the soon to be released so called “MONSTER GPU” (40.00tflop) 3090Ti.

Just figured I would let people know. I’ve seen them go for 2,300 “Buy it now” Easily the best 3090 there is.

On January 2nd I saw three listed on eBay. Now there are probably 120 on eBay lol.

What I find strange is that, most of them are brand new. Why are people just holding on to a bunch of brand new GPU’s?

Check on it periodically. The cheapest on there now is $2,500 “Buy it now”

But, you see some real fliers periodically.

I'm not considering anyone with a feedback score of 5 on a 2500 dollar item. Been there done that and it was not a fun situation.

    Edit:
He sold 1 item for 40 bucks over 12 months ago. That's going to be a hard pass.

    This.

Good scammers know to price their items just inside the, "this is a good deal," range to attract both the idiots who would hit buy it now on a $500 KP3090 and the slightly more savvy buyers who see a good enough deal.

First thing I do is go right to their feedback. If that passes the smell test I then check their locations and make sure that all syncs.

I then message them and start asking specific questions AND ask for some more pics with a piece of paper (or printout) of proof of ownership with today's date.

That will usually flush out 99.99% of scammers.

The chiller arrived. I think his meaning of "slightly used. Great condition." is way different than mine. Obviously, the guy used it for its intended purpose but it needs a bath and an internal cleaning. I thought he and I had an agreement on shipping. I paid the full shipping and he said he would give me a refund on the difference. First he told me he had to "confirm" the price after he shipped the item. I asked again and now he told me he is waiting for the funds to clear.

Anyway, I need to buy new connectors. I need to be able to test this to make sure it works.

    Thanks bro John :)
I still struggle with what I want. Both the Extreme and Apex have + and minus. But I'm still on 60% for the Asus Z690 Extreme.
Yep. It will be the BE QUIET! DARK POWER PRO 12 1500W as below. 50% cheaper than etc 1600W from Evga.

be quiet! Dark Power Pro 12 1500W Power Supply Review

I go with the above. Chap enough to replace if I really need a more modern PSU down the road. Can sell it then offset some of the costs.

Will be the 1000D. And the 7000D is the best second choice. Both fantastic chassis.

Yep, I'm forced to buy what they offer. Hence the choice below.

HeHe. I think bro Temp is an honest man and friend. I'm sure he want the best for me :)

I think I can save some money on the fans order it outside Norway. We have less good options to a good price. Each fan here cost $57 :eyeroll: I need 8x120mm and 8x140mm fans. Maybe less if I re-use what I already have.

    GPU...
    GTX 750Ti - 750,- $84
Buy used for fun. Or something similar for cheap. I wait for 4000 series as I'm not a gamer that need it now. And I already have different cards.

Again. The MB choice is still something that nag me. Need to read more reviews. But as you said, a few features is good to have and from both options. Sad you have to choose between Cholera and Pest.

    Thanks :)

I have always been in the Extreme camp (I have the Asus Extreme Z690) but if want the highest OC's in RAM, the Apex is going to be the best* (If you are going to be pushing those sticks pass 7000+). I got the Extreme for the 10G LAN and that is only because I'm wired for it now. I can't wait to see what you can do with modern desktop hardware in those temps of yours bro!

Thanks. A 420mm will still limit the cooling. But its damn cheap and I can spend more time save up money and see what I want. Yep, the colder weather will offset some of the need for custom cooling. A custom cooling and Norwegian weather (but not good for my broken health - I prefer Islas Canary weather) is a good combo.

The good part with the Arctic Liquid Freezer II 420, is the bigger and thicker 38mm rad vs other AIO brands and the weak 140mm fans. Swap out the fans and put in something better in pull-push config will most likely improve the already good results from this 3x140mm AIO cooler.

    Edit.
And I need a new screen. My son found this one for $561 (Asus ROG Strix XG27AQ 27" gamingscreen).
    https://www.elkjop.no/product/gaming/gamingskjerm/350842/asus-rog-strix-xg27aq-27-gamingskjerm

But I now have come a bit on way what I go for. DTRs is dead. I'm not stupid and pay for laptops I hate. Nope, not me :) The Clevo P870 is still a fantastic options for portable pc. I don't need any battery-books so called slimy modern (gaming) laptops for on the go. A phone can do that.

    -------------------------------------------------------------

It seems Norwegian computer stores have been filled with more DDR5. G.Skill 6000MHz sticks. 5928 nok - $667
    nr: 1205805 / Prodnr: F5-6000J3636F16GX2-TZ5RS

    nr: 1205806 / Prodnr: F5-6000J4040F16GX2-TZ5RS

I hope for a full black setup with a few white lights inside. And I expect I have to buy the ram with lights because its easier to re-sell them later to the kids due their bling bling flashy taste.

It seems we may get F5-6400J3239G16GX2-TZ5RK sticks with $112 premium over the 6000MHz sticks. 6990 nok - $789

I wonder what I should do now.

Mine was not pretty either when I first got it. I thought “Very ugly lol”. Just use acetone on the exterior though, and you can scrub out any black marks. As for the inside of the tank, just add hot water and rinse it a several times over and over. After rinsing a little, fill it up with vinegar and let it soak for 30 minutes, then rinse again about 3-4 times with really hot water. Until no vinegar odor remains in the tank.

Post up some pictures. I’d be curious to see how yours looks.

These chillers look to be used in a hydroponics grow scenario. Because mine had fertilizer material inside the tank. I didn’t think I would get the inner tank cleaned up like I wanted, until using vinegar and letting it soak a bit. It really came out perfect. And now, my entire machine looks like a normal appliance. Clean, and not all cracked up and dirty like it was.

Do you see any laptops worth to pay for nowadays? All laptops with Alder lake coming with soldered Gpu and soldered on processors. And the AMD powerd laptops is equal bad. Even Clevo went the sick disgusting route and killed their only laptop option worth to buy. I would still build an desktop as replacement for the old one as Intel have changed socket.

Unless the X170KM-G gets prema and sorts out its issues, the last, true great DTR will end up being the X170SM-G if Alderlake doesn't go 17.3" full tilt.

I would love to see AMD get a 17.3" monster with a 5950x in it or 6000 series too...

...but the market winds have steadily shown a contracting "big boy" market for some time.

We're in the end game ladies and gents..
