no. Looking at the other runs. It surprised me. My 8600m gs couldn't do that. Maybe myy single 3870 could of.

Well, 8600m GS is an absolute joke in comparison. I'd say this would be like comparing the 8600m GT DDR3 against the go7950GTX. In synthetic benchmarks, the 8600m GT scored better. Most of my shader-intensive games ran the same, if not faster at resolutions up to 1440x900, but the moment we passed that mark in resolution, everything took an ugly turn in favour of the older 7950 GTX.
In the context of the FLOPs and power of the card, the 5830 can push speed and power that could compete against most of our high-end GPUs. Its weakness-factor--if you want to call it that--would be possibly higher resolution due to the 128-bit bandwidth. At least that's what we're told in theory - more VRAM + more bandwidth = better scaling at higher resolutions. The 5870 overcomes that 128-bit issue with the implementation of GDDR5 VRAM, making it a perfect all-round powerhouse, and an effiecent contender in terms of power and heat. Maybe some 5830 users could run gaming benchmarks at 1080p resolutions and share their results (DMC 4/ Street Fighter 4/Resident Evil 5/Crysis). -
I don;t have screen shots etc but I could play MW2 all high settings at 1080 with the 5830. I was getting around 40fps. And these are with a i5 520m.
-
Resident Evil 5 @ 592/1185 - 42.7fps
Stalker COP @ 585/1180 - 41.8, 40.1, 43.6, 27.9fps (Screenshot Below)

Vantage run; clocks in SS

It should be noted that OC results vary by each machine. I've seen users with lower overclocks as well as users with higher overclocks. -
ArmageddonAsh Mangekyo Sharingan
Thanks for the info, what is the last option on Stalker?
that seemed to have cut the FPS down alot
at £1,300 seems like a very good offer, so enticing -
The Ax15m looks nice but keep in mind that it's over 9lbs, you're not really going to be taking that thing anywhere... the HP (even though it's not really going to be considered due to all the issues and price) is less than 6lbs. I'd call 7lbs the ceiling if you intend to ever move it around (i.e. taking it to work, etc).
Also worth adding, you can't get the HP Envy 15 with an i5 over here, only the furnace-replacement i7-720QM. -
-
ArmageddonAsh Mangekyo Sharingan
You from UK as well, thats another thing that worried about hearing the 720 can get quite hot, not sure i think most have gone for the i5 series which saves energy and wont be as hot as the sun, but i dont think even the cheap version has that, but even it it did i wouldnt get it - low res and the old graphics card
-
Kade Storm The Devil's Advocate
My results in MW2 with a single 8800m GTX and 9800m GTX were usually over 60 FPS with a few dips to the 40s. If I had to pin an average, I'd say 60-ish, but to be modest, I'll take it down to 45 with the 8800m GTX and abour 50-55 with the 9800m GTX (didn't get to really play around with that setting as the game and the card were on loan). All at 1200p with 2 x AA. Oh, and my the CPU was T9300.
Re: Last part of the STALKER COP benchmark.
It is sun shafts with global illumination. If you look closely, the light source casts rays through every object and opening along with a fully illuminated visual. This takes a lot of toll on GPUs and is actually quite impressive if done right. (Aka. The lighting in Killzone 2 and Dead Space.) -
Okay, run STALKER on these settings:
And compare with this:
Let's see how much muscle the 5830 really has. -
ArmageddonAsh Mangekyo Sharingan
thanks for the screens, do you have any idea what that sunshafts thing is all about? seems to halve both you average and lowest FPS
-
Kade Storm The Devil's Advocate
This feature is very taxing, and looks great in-game, much like it did for titles like Killzone 2 and Dead Space. -
It forced the engine to calculate a ton of sun rays and shadows as they bounce through windows, buildings, and off of objects.
It's hard for me to put into the proper words.
edit: yeah, what he said -
ArmageddonAsh Mangekyo Sharingan
or does it only happen in certain locations?
i liked SoS is this one and the other in the series any good? -
Kade Storm The Devil's Advocate
Lawl. You got it right, Jack.

ArmadeggonAsh,
It is relatively easy to switch it off. I think you should just select 'dynamic lighting' and no 'enhanced lighting', which includes both DX10 and D11 lighting. Simply select dynamic lighting and it'll run without shafts. I actually like the shafts, and have implemented a mod to make them run throughout the day cycle, so we get rays even when there's a thunder storm at night times. Looks awesome. -
ArmageddonAsh Mangekyo Sharingan
Ah cool, i dont have the game but liking SoS so might pick it up
might look cool but makes a nice big dent in FPS unless you running on SLI (like you) -
Kade Storm The Devil's Advocate
Heh. Yeah. Although I was running it on a single 9800m GTX at 720p - still looked nice.
Anyway, it should be with dynamic lighting, a lot like SoS with a polished-up look. Also, I have to implore that you do not take this benchmark at face value. It makes sun shafts hit the system in a way that isn't always the case. Most of us running SLi still got 24 average for that scene. I had to dig up an obscure 19x.xx series driver to get a bit of a boost. Now when I play the actual game, I got over 45 FPS in most parts with a decent average of 30+. (So much for relying on a poorly coded benchmark, eh?) -
ArmageddonAsh Mangekyo Sharingan
lol okay cool, so without the shafts thing what kind of FPS roughly you think i could get on the Envy? with i7 720 and 5830?
-
Running those exact settings I get:
19.1, 18.1, 19.1, 16fps.
Oddly enough though, running them with DX11 instead of 10 gives:
23.7, 22.2, 23.5, 13.1 -
I just realized, the Priyapat results I posted were from when I had a 2.93ghz T9800.
These results are from my 2.4Ghz Q9200, same settings:
SunShafts are clearly GPU limited. -
Weird... CPU dependent? I would've figured the graphics cards wouldn't have been able to keep up. How does the Q9200 compare to my i5 430M?
-
According to Notebookcheck, the i5 430M is close in performance to the T9800.
The 260M provides that much more power. -
Kade Storm The Devil's Advocate
If you don't mind my confirming, these are the average scores for each phase of the test, yes? (E.g. 23.7 for day. 22.2 for storm. 23.5 for night/storm. 13.1 for morning sunshafts.) -
That is indeed what he meant.
-
Kade Storm The Devil's Advocate
Ah, cheers.
So yeah, I guess higher resolution and simultaneous high effects is where the card might fall short. Perhaps for the Envy, setting the game to 1440x900 might be better. -
You should be using 16:9 resolutions. Try 1366x768.
-
Kade Storm The Devil's Advocate
My bad, but I am sure we all get the gist of what's being seen in these tests.
Envy does seem like a better portable option. On the other hand, if people are looking for an easy to move around/carry desktop replacement, then the M15x is dandy. -
-
Just like when ATi cards had DX10.1, when you enabled them, you also were able to see some increase in performance. -
Okay. One last post regarding the Stalker COP benchmark:
The exact same settings as were asked of me but DX11 without tesselation
http://img218.imageshack.us/img218/2554/dx11.gif
Performance superior to the 260M GTX?
Also, if there are any other free benchmarks you'd like to compare I'd have no problem downloading the programs to make the comparisons... I can't really pay for much right now though as I am on a college budget! :\ -
ArmageddonAsh Mangekyo Sharingan
thanks for all the info guys.
do any of you Pcsx2 i was wondering how that would perform
as i play ff10 and ff12 currently would i still be able to play them?
anyone have supreme commander and the the i7 720?
just wonna see how it does compared to my setup?
what res would be best to run games at with higher settings but to still look nice im guessing 1080 is to high? -
Kade Storm The Devil's Advocate
However, getting into the technicals. With tessalation disabled, which Nvidia cards cannot do anyway. . . and DX11. . . you are just a little ahead of the 260m (although for all practical intents and purposes - they are at the same level), but that's also DX11 API going in your favour. (Note: I guess the DX11 boost is a good sign, but the other part is what I was infering on the last page. Now tessalation is a unique DX11 feature. However, to get maximum resolution and acceptable performance, you had to disable this 'future feature'. Just for the sake of knowledge, try running a test at 1280x720 with tessalation and DX11, along with ultra settings. Might show the real potential of the 5830 within practical limits.)
Other tests could be done: There is always the Crysis benchmark, but I prefer the full game benchmark with the 1.02 patch. Since you guys are using single cards, you could run the basic demo and benchmark. -
ArmageddonAsh Mangekyo Sharingan
thanks. could i request some Game Benchmarks?
i dont really play any of the games listed
though WiC does look good. -
I'm only using the freely available in-game benchmarks, as they're the easiest to compare.
-
Turning my resolution from 1920x1080 to 1680x1050 doesn't even yield an increase of 3fps on average. Could it be possible that my CPU is the bottleneck?
-
ArmageddonAsh Mangekyo Sharingan
-
An i5 can't bottleneck a 5830. -
really speaking , the GTX260M should trash the 5830 at high res... only thing is 5830 has directx 11.0... which is in a way crippled by the 128bit memory bus... asus had to ruin this card
and ArmageddonAsh , u better off not getting an envy... it might be light and all but its over priced , no optical drive... ur better off buying some other laptop... the envy also has BSOD and black screen issues... -
ArmageddonAsh Mangekyo Sharingan
as for the problems you have mentioned, i have no heard about any of those problems from people that own the laptop
Got any proof of this? like links to people that have had these problems? -
In regards to the BSOD and black screen issues I can say that I haven't had either of these happen to me yet after two weeks of owning my laptop. The only time I got "black screens" were when my display drivers failed trying to find my max OC on the graphics card. I'm assuming that or something similar happens to any PC when you push your clocks too far.
I'm not trying to push you one way or another as far as a replacement laptop but 5lbs for the ENVY is a far cry from the 9lbs of the Alienware you were considering. Portability is really a relative term and while I wouldn't make due with the Alienware it's not to say that you wouldn't mind it. -
-
asus didnt ruin anything, NO idea what he is saying ...
-
I don't think the black screen should be a problem anymore. The 10.3 catalyst driver fixed it. I don't see why you shouldn't get an Envy unless money is an issue. Roughly same graphics performance, 6 hrs battery with optional slice with i5, looks alot prettier, runs very cool with i5, weighs only 5 lbs. And if you DO happen to get a defective unit, you could just return it for a new one or just by the Asus if you don't like it.
-
This might sound weird but I didn't like the Envy 15 at all, I like the envy 13 alot better, and the reason why is because the envy 15 from what I saw had limited monitor/lcd tilt. When I use my laptops I always like to sit high and have the monitors tilt a little backwards as if I'm looking down on them. For some reason the Envy 15 doesn't support a far back tilt, and prefers to be somewhat upright 90 degrees. while I want something that's like 135 degrees.
-
I believe the screen opens to a maximum angle between 110-120 degrees which may bother some people! -
What i meant by ruined , was that they crippled the card with 128bit bus and DDR3... they should have put a 256bit bus with DDR3 or 128bit bus with GDDR5... -
ATI limits the 5830 to the 128bit bus with GDDR3. HP had nothing to do with the decision. Asus even less than nothing to do with it, I don't even know why you mentioned them. And yes, the G73 will own the Envy at gaming. The problem is that it weighs 3 more pounds and has a 2" larger screen to do it. If you travel with it or use it on battery, the G73 is a much worse option than the Envy. Some people do want more from their laptops than just the fastest gaming they can get. I can play L4D2 at 1920x1080 with fairly high details on my Envy. It's not as if the Envy is slow.
-
ArmageddonAsh Mangekyo Sharingan
the g73 might own the envy but at what cost?
it looks REALLY ugly
17inch compared to the 15inch that i am after
as its not out in UK i would be crippled by import tax
i would also be screwed should it break
as for envy problems i check the owners lounge every day but find many problems. not read about any bsod or any black sceens or any throttling problems as someone else WITHOUT the envy mention -
But anyways, the G73 and Envy are dedicated to totally different markets... And the HD5830 is still an awesome performer.
