You're right, I probably couldn't beat the price, but like I said, I love building PC's. I also like knowing exactly what's is going into my setup. If i want to "cheap out" I can, or if I want to go "Top End" I can do that too.

Plus I'm at the stage of the game where I just need to upgrade parts here and there, I no longer need to do a "from the ground up" build.

    Yo guys. Just a question.
Here in Europe is finally available the HP HDX with T9300, 3 GB of RAM, and the GTS. Screen is 1680*1050.
What do you think about it?
It would have better performance than the Gateway?
    Anyone has it?

    I'm in doubt.
Till yesterday i thought i would have gone with the 1730 with SLI GTX for 2300 €...
But this HDX will cost me 1900 €... if the performance would be fine, I'd like to have a 20'' instead of a 17''..

it would probably be the same as this gateway.

also just a fore warning, the HDX is HUGE! and so heavy, i would neevr want to carry anything like that around, might as well get a desktop instead.

If 400€ isn't alot for you, I would go with 1730 with 8800GTX instead of HP HDX. If however, Gateway 8800m GTS is available in Europe for less then $1000, then get the cheaper one. To me 1900€ and 2300€ is a small gap to not consider Dell 1730 with GTX.

    @ Narsnail
Portability is not a big concern to me, since I have a 14'' to carry around in case of need.
HDX would be just a fine, stylish desktop replacement wich a nice big screen... something like a all-in-one but more powerful..
PS: You're quite weak for being a wookie! :D

    @Peter
Yeah..if Gateway were available in Europe, sure I'll consider it.
But is not. Really don't know why.
400 bucks are not the big concern but you know...
here in Italy we use to say:
meglio nella mia saccoccia che nella loro...
that can be translated in: better in my pocket that in theirs..

So damn true. Either way, laptops are meant for portability and I'm sure nothing beats using a very good pair of headphones. The HDX by definition literally ISN'T a laptop ;)

the fx is about 2 inches thick at the most, small for a 17inch laptop

Hey all you 8800M GTS users. Here`s a tip. If my 7950GTX can handle crysis ALL HIGH at anything below 1024x768 and get 20+fps, I bet your GPUs can handle crysis all high at 1440x900 in XP. Give that a try...

XP is not like a world of difference running a game. It's a little better but its not 20 frames of difference. Maybe 5-7.

I bought the FX because of his review etc...

And im not a vista fan boy, id switch to XP but I dont want to shell out the extra $ and I actually love vista, since im used to it now and its got all these extra things... and im not directly concerned if my laptop runs 5% slower because of that

5-7 IS ALL IT TAKES to get from unplayable to playable most of the times.
It was in my case and I`m happy with XP until I hear Vista will not use 30 GB of disk space for nothing and run like crap.

thats still 20% more fps in a game like crysis. I get what your saying, but a lot of games don't exactly hit 60+ fps on laptops especially modern games. So another 5-7 fps is worth it to a lot of people.

When I had my XPS M1730 with 8700m GT SLI I actually had better game performance in Vista compared to XP and this with SLI. You just need to apply the correct hotfixes and use the right drivers, I also installed Service Pack 1.

I could never get the same framerates in XP no matter what driver I tested. Now if I had owned it for more than one week I could have tried more of course. Now I will soon have the XPS M1730 again but with 4GB and 8800m GTX SLI instead :)

But yeah I prefer XP over Vista big time.

    Hi!
Can any1 please tell me what program can I use to OC the VGA?
I tried Rivaturner, but it won't work.

Other thing, does GPU-Z work on youre P6831FX? When I start it (Default Windows Vista Home Premium) I get an error, that "gpu-z stopped working"...

Last thing, how can I save the VGA BIOS? I tried with EVEREST, but it isn't working.
