Hey I am getting my Gateway P-6831FX in 30-40 minutes...

Should I download the LV2G drivers for the 8800m gts? The nVidia 8800m gts drivers? Or keep the Gateway drivers

Think 171.16s are still the best. Haven't tried the 20s I believe. But I tested at least 8-10 of the newest/old popular drivers the last couple of days.

    171.16 or 174.20?

    How big is the DL?

Is the .XX just like increments or does it mean something specific?

I would like the best drivers for Crysis and basically one that wont make me bang my head against the wall...

Installed 174.20 driver (laptopvideo2go) on my Gateway P-6831FX, but after Vista restart, the default Vista driver will load up. (I uninstalled the previous driver)
169.61 works fine. Anz idea whz wont 174.20 work?
And and idea how could I get Rivaturner to work properly on Vista? (It wont recognise the 8800M GTS fully)

Any1 was able to get 174.20 work properly? if yes, how?

I know its apparently "taboo" to ask, but I can't get a straight answer from any of the threads I've seen on the topic, but which drivers are people having the best luck with on the 8800GTS card. I have the gateway FX, and I'm still on the stock drivers, I would like to upgrade them, but it seems like everyone has a different opinion on what to use.

And also, in terms of removing old drivers, is there a FAQ on how to do a driver purge on vista, I only know of one for XP. Does using driver cleaner in safe mode still work on vista?

You will never get any 'straight answer' to your question. Everyone plays games differently and plays different games. Drivers thats out is optimized for 'a' games then suddenly next driver contains 'bugs' for that 'a' game.

You will noticed that alot of people used to use 169.28. Now 171.xx then perhaps the new drivers. So which is right? No one knows until you try out every drivers yourself and see which one work right for your gaming needs.

FYI, I am still using old drivers I got from Windows Update. Works with every games I have and well. Plus, I don't care much for 1-2 fps increase from newer drivers.

I'm looking at the HP HDX with the 8800M GTS. If I got it with the X7900, do you think I would get better FPS than you, in games like Oblivion and World in Conflict, both seem very CPU limited. Or would the frame rates be about the same, regardless of CPU? Also, what is forced Anti-Aliasing "forced AA"?

A 8800m gtx barely can do it, its pointless to even test with a 8800m gts.

Heres a link that shows sli 8800m gtx in the m1730 and single in the widow pc.
    http://www.anandtech.com/showdoc.aspx?i=3242&p=8
The test narsail posted is at the screens native res, with a cpu upgrade you just might be able to up the resolution but pretty sure 1920 is gonna be pushing it.

Hey all, I just joined the forums after being a long time lurker. I know this thread is a bit old but maybe you'll see it. HP had an online coupon for $500 off laptops so I pulled the trigger on an HDX!!

    - HP Pavilion HDX Entertainment Series CTO
    - Genuine Windows Vista Home Premium (32-bit)
    - Intel(R) Core(TM) 2 Duo Processor T9300 (2.50 GHz, 6 MB L2 Cache, 800MHz FSB)
    - 20.1" diagonal WUXGA High-Definition HP Ultra Brightview Widescreen (1920x1200)-"True HD" 1080p res
    - 3GB DDR2 System Memory (2 Dimm)
    - 512MB NVIDIA GeForce 8800M GTS
    - 240GB 7200RPM SATA Dual Hard Drive (120GB x 2)
    - LightScribe SuperMulti 8X DVD+/-RW with Double Layer Support

    $2434.99
    Summary of discounts for order:

    Instant discounts you received:
    $500.00 Coupon NB1567

While there are many arguments for and against this behemoth, where I am using it iss mainly home in a place that I cannot have a desktop the kids can get at and can put it away each night (after late night gaming ;) or Photoshop) So, with the same GFX card as the OP thread, what do you think the benchmarks will be for the 1900 x 1200? (excluding crysis) I mostly will be playing RTS games. Think I will need to lower the res?
Thanks and awesome forum bye the way.

Not really. The 8800M GTS is a beast of a card. You`ll be able to play most games at WUXGA, all high details.
There are always exceptions, but a few tweaks here and there should make it awesome.
Btw, congrats on the purchase,we expect a review!

The card specs look a lot like the leaner younger brother to the GTX so I hope to keep WUXGA. Glorious 20" laptop (I have a big lap) gaming and photoshopping goodness with just a touch of portability thrown in. I will give it my layman's review when I get it.

What are the best benchmarks/methods to go about it?

with the exception of crysis you should be able to max all the games i tested on WUXGA, plus you have a way better processor, it should help in gaming very minimally, but RTS's and crysis it should help a bit more.

BTW thats a great price you got, congrats on the new laptop :)

narsnail - your review and thread are a big reason I could confidently pull the trigger on the HDX and not have remorse for not getting a Sager with a GTX. Great review by the way. Is there a thread or source for how to benchmark and grab frames that you used? I'll be scouring now but if you have it handy... I am still a bit shocked that the coupon worked. It's almost like a Dell inspiron coupon magically working on an XPS machine. It isn't wise to upset a Wookie.

    Hey creekdweller,

I think you are going to be very happy with the HDX. I've got the exact same setup you posted except for the WUXGA screen. (If only I had a coupon ... anyway was over budget for what I got; mama not so happy :D )

I've had it for two weeks now. It blows my 3 year old XPS Gen2 with 7800 GTX away, and I was still pretty happy with that unit.

Just last night, I got around to some tweaking. Laptopvideo2go has a nice HP specific INF to go with their drivers. Installed it into 174.74 drivers, installed nTune and overclocked a little. My original 3dmark score was around 7650-7800, 3-4 tests. GPU is clocked now at 600/850 (pretty sure I can go further), and with new drivers I got a 9248  It blew my mind. I was thinking maybe 8400-8500. I wasn't expecting a 1400 point increase. I have tweaked a bunch of vista features down as well, but still.

I'm not a big frames kinda guy, more into no stuttering and smooth gameplay. But I did load FRAPS, and saw that NWN2 and Oblivion (2 games that really bogged down my XPS) were much improved. NWN2 with all settings maxed never got below 35, usuually around 50. Haven't played Oblivion since loading FRAPS, but it is smooth as silk with most of the eye candy turned on.

I have read where HP (and probably Gateway too) have been real conservative with the clock settings on these cards. And the new 2.50 Penryn processor really helps open things up.

Anyway, just thought I'd share, and hope you enjoy yours as much when it comes as I have.

HDX is a 20.1" immobile possibly luggable beast... ok that sounded wrong...

I got my P-6831FX for $1199 :D And im going to add a T9500 wooh!

Im having some driver problems... I have 174.74 right now... should be good... hopefully...

Im in Cali right now and so the internet is BLAZZING fast compared to my primitive DSL (slowest 20KBps youll ever get to know)
so I tried 8 drivers... this one seems to work best

    Hey hovercraftdriver,
You have no idea how happy it makes me to hear it!! Just check the http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=169232 thread and see all the problems people have been having. I am not a big frames guy either, as long as it plays smooth... and am much more into RTS than FPS so I CANNOT WAIT for my battleship to arrive. Did you do some of the Vista tweaks from the guide in the forum?

even when standing stationary at the first point where u get to see the sun iget like 24-28...and in the fight when i go to disable the jammer i get like 16-18...

Yeah, I was all over that thread and several others + reviews across the net. I had purchased my wife an HP laptop last year, and it has had no issues, so I wasn't really worried about buying HP. My advice, don't worry about it...that is what a warranty is for. May be an inconvenience if something breaks, but only a small percentage have issues. They just seem big or a lot when a small percentage of folks post their issues publicly. Not that those folks aren't having issues and that sucks, because any feedback is good feedback for those of us in the market to see and be aware of. Just take it with a grain of salt is all I am saying. I know it's been a great machine for me so far...knock on wood. :D

And yes, the vista tweak guide from this forum is what I used. The only thing I haven't really had time for yet is to do a clean install. I wiped some thngs manually, and everything is fine, so I may or may not get around to that.

DUDE no it is not ridiculous, change to DX9:

right click on crysis icon and then on properties, once in there look at the target and add -dx9 at the end

    EXAMPLE:
    "C:\Program Files\Electronic Arts\Crytek\Crysis\Bin32\Crysis.exe" -dx9

This should help a couple fps and not make much difference visually

Cyrsis can shame desktops much less mobile laptop GPUs.

Lower your settings to medium and compare here: http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=218971&highlight=crysis+t9300

..or you can trade up to a Clevo with a 8800m GTX..or two ;)

    Hi!
I could buy a new Core2Duo T7700 meron CPU for $212 (also a -$60 discount for my T5450 so the end price would be $152)...does it worth it to buy for this price? How much performance increase would be that in games and in Windows Vista experience index and expesially in 3DMark06? Or it's better to wait for a T9300 Penryn or for an Extreme processor?

I paid $328 for the T9300. You can get the T7700 for $152! That would be very hard to pass up. Enjoy your new T7700!

Is there a big difference in games between T7700 and T9300? T7700 gets around 2080 points (according some people) in 3DMark06, how much points does youre T9300 get?

T7700 gets around 600 points more if I'm right, so the end score would be around 7600 points in 3DMark06, instead of the 7000 with T5450. Whell, this isn't very good compared to the 8500 points which people get with T9300 :( (at least they say so)
Or they get 8500 points not because just the T9300, but besides the CPU, they change the default "slow" Samsung RAMs to faster, CL4 2x2GB RAM-s too?

I would get T9500 because it has more cache (I think twice) and its just a tad little more than the T9300

Synthetic bencharks are just that, nothing very real world there. Depends on which games, a lot of games are GPU limited, like Crysis.

The 7700 and 9300 were the same price when I bought mine. I was looking at your adjusted price difference of $152, not bad. IMHO you will not be disappointed with either.

The reports I see do not justify the 4GB upgrade unless you are going full 64 bit OS. From my old bench of CL4 to CL5, there was no real world difference.

I got Windows Vista Business 64bit too, so I'm planning to install that :)
No difference between CL4 and CL5? not even in vista startup or in 3dmark06? c'mon, there has to be...my old notebook (MSI GX600) with 2GB RAM loaded Vista much faster then my P-6831FX with 3GB RAM...and also the 2GB RAM in the MSI got 4.9 under Vista, and the 3GB in the Gateway gets 4.5...or it is because the MSI had T7500 2,2Ghz, 4MB cache and my p-6831FX has T5450 1,67Ghz 2MB cache CPU?

Don't take my word for it, if you could get a nice jump in performance, we ALL would do it ;) I'm sure you might get back stuff like 2% to 5%! (yawn) It's sort of like dual channel memory, looks great on paper but leaves you a bit wanting in the real world. Not what you want to hear but do post your benches on "before and after" like games or timed start ups from the same machine. Now your 5450 to a 7700 for $158, ye ha!

Anyone dumping that nasty old slow 2gig ram pulled from their 6831, please pm me. I would like to dump my 1 gig stick if your price is right.

    Cheers

I think the CPU has an effect, I mean, I played WiC with my friend today (he has a P68FX too) and well, I was running MAX 2xAA, 4xAF 1680x1050 and him on High, 4xAA,4xAF 1440x900 and the performances were about the same, and I loaded the map in 2/3th of the time he did. My RAM is also getting 4.6

I see...thank you for youre replies. So you say that CPU upgrade>RAM upgrade? hmm...my last question...in games a T7700 would give the same performance (FPS, loading times, etc) like a T9300? I dont care about coding programs, and file copy...I know these are faster with T9300...I only care about the game's performance :)

go with the T7700, your saving a lot of money that way, and the same performance. The only thing the T9300 has on that processor is power consumption.
