Jaybee, why dont you compare the price of a schenker base computer with 7970m to a deviltech same specc'ed with 680m?
i know this isn't an apples to apples because deviltech sells much cheaper anyways, but that's all you have to go by right now

The Fragbook is the MSI 1762 notebook, a good choice as I own it myself (with steelseries keyboard though). Deviltech already stated that they don't sell any Clevos.
-
Damn it, I've been told they were a Clevo reseller and everybody kept saying their Fragbook is a Clevo (granted, it was back on 2011, but still..).
&*^&^#@
pau1ow, how is this case really? How are the temps? Is it prone to heating? -
I think Meaker have MSI barebone
-
I would ask you to make sure you share your experiences with us but you said you don't expect your lappy until Septand i'm sure this thread will be flooded with comparisons by then. Congrats on your purchase.
-
alright then, so i compared deviltech (MSI GT70 barebone with 680M) to schenker (XMG P702 / Clevo P170EM with 7970M) with identical configs and got a 220€ difference. sure, its still cheaper than other 300€ differences u see normally, but then again those are two different barebones and its still worlds away from 50-100€ difference stated here. if anyone could point out a flaw here, im happy to be corrected! otherwise im still not seeing any pricing loophole for a cheap 680M here
and yeah, wasnt trying to be a pain ^^ its just that everbody here would sure love a quote with a 50-100€ upgrade from 7970M to 680M!
as for the MSI barebone, i dont have any personal experience with it but the thought of having just one single fan instead of separate CPU/GPU fans gives me some worries as to potential heating issues....
cheers
oh btw amirfoox: heres a review of the GT70 barebone with a different config of course. maybe thatll give u a nice overall picture concerning heat, loudness and other specs -

sorry for not translating everything but it's quite the same configuration while deviltech uses msi barebones & schenker uses clevo. -
I kinda feel bad - I called up the EPP (employee purchase folks) and haggled a deal with them. Since they had listed the same base model M18X R2 for (on my EPP page) 376 USD more than straight from Alienware, I managed to get a free dual videocard upgrade to the 7970M.
End result? Base model M18X R2 with crossfire 7970Ms for a little under $2100 with free next business day shipping. The only caveat was that it took me 2 weeks of run around hell to get there.
With all that extra cheddar saved, I tricked it out with dual SSDs and sweet RAM. -
-
That's kinda sucks to know that it's not a Clevo. At least now I know what to expect. -
@arestavo: omg, that is a SWEET deal indeed lol! no reason to feel bad, u apparently did a great job at "haggling"
@core2: interesting! so depending on which components u choose u CAN actually end up with a pretty identically priced system @7970M vs. 680M
i went with the above mentioned 3610qm, 750gb xt, 8gb ram, 2 yrs warranty, US kb and win7 home, etc. -
-
Actually, from that review you've supplied, jaybee, it's not all bad. Although tacky, the MSI actually functions pretty much similar across the board. A bit lousier build quality, but not too shabby. Not as bad as I thought, really.
Anyway, good to be educated about stuff like that, thanks.
I still think the price is OK for what I'll get, overall. -
sure man, main thing is that ure happy with ur machine
-
still.. i went with schenker and the cheaper config (signature). although there were the shipping delays due to the 7970m problems the support was excellent! email response time was always less than 2h even until 10pm sometimes
status today: shipped -> should arrive tomorrow
can't wait to get my hands on it and do my first overclock ever. (too bad i'm all busy this weekend)
-
But enough of this stuff, anyway
Edit: Congrats, core²! I envy you, man... -
i envy you both!
still trying to figure out where to get my 7970M upgrade kit.... -
-
yeah already contacted several resellers including sager. not happy with the pricing (including shipping, money transfer and import tax) so im still looking around for a better quote...
-
Meaker@Sager Company Representative
You would need the special card though.
-
yep, thats the thing! im in dire need of the modded vBIOS....mythlogic said theyd offer it soon so i contacted them as well for a quote....lets see how that goes
-
Speaking of VBIOSs, I just flashed my two cards with a 1.1V 950GPU/1400Mem one. NIIICE bump in speed, but I need to see how far it will go!
Temps? Believe it or not, they were the same as stock when I was in Heaven 3.0. -
-
u literally ARE in heaven, my friend
-
-
cloud 9 is subeject to cylon nukes
just saying -
-
On the other hand -
Well, 1GHz is easy (1050 and 1025 is a no go at 1100mV), but my "low end" CPU holds back my 3Dmark11 score some.
Heaven 3.0 with ALL settings maxed - 71.6 FPS. Reow!
EDIT: Kinda crazy - it took hours upon hours of tinkering to get my desktop 580 classifieds stable at 1GHz. Here I am with a LAPTOP getting 1GHz in 20 minutes! Sheesh >_< -
Edit did everyone's mess up that quoted that post haha -
Are you thinking about a cpu upgrade in the future? -
680M coming by the end of this month
-
Karamazovmm Overthinking? Always!
so aside some numbers and endless silly arguments, we have no real news?

I went with the x17 with the 7970m, 3820 i7, 16gb 1600mhz ram, 120gb ssd, blu ray player, killer 1103 wireless card. Now, if I want to upgrade in the future, I just have to pay for the parts and shipping, Labor is free. Their CS is what sealed the deal, but also the price. I was gonna pay 100$ to 700$ more for other companies for the same product (alienware had different cases, but Origin was the same as DS, every part)So after reading their customer reviews, coming here and reading about the 7970 (seeing how it OCs etc) I jumped on the DS system. The 680m was not out, but for me, I dont want to pay 313$ for it and wait a few more weeks. If the 680m comes down in price a bit, can be overclocked the way people want it to, then I might pay for it, as I just have to pay for the part and not the labor. If it stays at the price, the vram hinders its OC ability, then Ill stay with the 7970m. Most of this thread is a waste, but some users have provided some good questions and or answers, and I thanks you for that -
guys i have question did still no one tested 7970m's in m17 r2?
man i want 2 of them in my r2 so badly i cant wait
i have 920xm in it but cant overclock more than 3,33ghz is that normal?
im getting 20,5k vantage cpu test.I think thats enough power for the 7970's
since im playing only at 1200p.And yeah RGB LED!! ;-) especially the reds......
my 920xm will be enough right?
and do you guys know where i can buy 7970m in bundle for a good price?
thanks -
Looks like folks have been buying them from an Ebay company for awhile now, for the M17 R2. (BTW, FEAR my Google-Fu skillz!)
EDIT: http://forum.notebookreview.com/alienware-m17x/669003-alienware-m17x-r2-amd-7970m-can-work.html# also has some info. -

What we know is that the cards are fairly close at stock with a slight skew to Nvidia and then the spread caused by games favouring one company or the other.
What we don't know is how tweakable the 680M is, if it will be a monster like the 580M (Voltage options in bios, hynix T2C ram with decent IMC letting 1.2-1.6ghz mem clocks) or if it will have no room for manoeuvre. -

hello all,
dont mean to hijack the thread, but based on my research that N9150 GPU is upgradable... If I go with the 7970M for now, is 680M user upgradable or do I have to send the laptop in? My current order is with XoticPC...
Thanks. -
-
thank you guys!!! this info makes me really happy.
if 7970m cross really has 5870m like watt usage then i hope for
oc'able 7970m's in my r2 with the 240 watt -
Just took delivery of my Metabox P170EM and have done some preliminary testing on 3DMark11 and got the following results:
AMD Radeon HD 7970M video card benchmark result - Intel Core i7-3720QM Processor,CLEVO P170EM score: P7000 3DMarks
This is with stable O/C and is repeatable with no glitches/crashes
Very Impressed with this card!
Cheers
Setup:
Metabox P170EM I7-3720QM; 16GB RAM; 240GB Intel SSD; AMD Radeon 7970m Core:940; Memory Clock:1250 -
Congrats man! Though how in the world did you manage to get such high score with those clocks? Its amusing to say the least.
-
It took a bit of tweaking; anything over 950/1300 and it would freeze/artifact
The out of the box score was P5600, however when I turned off Tesselation in the Catalyst Control Centre and tweaked a few of the other settings in CCC, I ended up with P6400.
From there I started to O/c. Highest score was around P8100, but not stable.
Cheers, -

AMD Drivers here:
Metabox Driver Downloads
These caused some headaches initially with BSD during install, but the tech I called at Metabox said the AMD graphics drivers already come packaged with the Intel drivers (I had already installed the Intel drivers) which tend to cause some addressing conflicts/BSD
