Hey Shark, lookin at that gateway on tigerdirect, I was curious, does tigerdirect not charge sales tax? I just checked by putting the item in my shopping cart, and calculated shipping (about $13), but it shows tax as $0.00 even though i put in an address/zip code etc?
If it doesn't charge tax, that'd put it roughly at the same price as the 6862 at best buy after taxes (since it's $750 on sale w/ around $50 in taxes). Or does it wait til u submit the order from tigerdirect before factoring in taxes?

i remember that they were actually going for $699 last thursday which was the same day i bought my M-6864 FX. i was debating between the two and was so close to pulling the trigger on the 6860 but i'm the type that worries to much so the thought of not having at least a year warranty scared me off, plus it makes me feel alot better owning something "brand new" -
Has anyone experienced a slight increase in temps of GPU with the newest drivers from ATI's website? 8.522 I think?
Mine seems to idle at 1-2C more then usual. -
slayer: I think they only charge tax where they have locations.
ront75: no, saving $700 wont throw me off, either. No other way I could afford this class of machine! The $699 units sold out in a matter of minutes, but technically, assuming the search.live.com comes through, it will be $719 or so, so close enough.

im happy with this comp now lol....i was quite unhappy awhile back playing tf2 with dx8 and still getting 25 fps but i got cod4 and i play 60fps constant basically..i dont really give a crap about crysis, and if i were to ever play it ryane has configs that will allow me to get 35 fps average so its all good. definitely a great laptop for 750 dollars.
-
hey how are you running your cod4 at 60fps what settings?
i have the same laptop 6874h as ryane and the same ati hd 2600,
-
sup govna...
-
nuttin much, jus having a hard time playin cod4 lol, and other then that justifying buying a gateway lol ... whiich everyone seems to bash
-
-
just out of general intrest. All these 3dmark scores floating around here... I take all of them are done at 1280 x 800 unless a resoltution is said specificaly ?

just curious. I just got the gateway m-6862 (hd 2600 512 ddr3). How do I get the latest drivers? I downloaded and installed the newest catalyst control center (8.8 i think). Does that update the drivers automatically?
-
They have 3 packages: Drivers, Catalyst Control Center, and both combined.
What you downloaded is designated in the filename:
if it's driver only, it'll have dd in the filename. If it's the Catalyst Control Center only, it'll have ccc in the filename. If it was the package with both, it'll have ccc_ddd in the filename.
If you straight-download the drivers from ATI, that will NOT work with this lappie - you need to download MobilityModder from here. That page has download links, and further down has detailed step-by-step instructions on it's use.
T -
slayerfaith1982 Notebook Evangelist
okay i downloaded the one the had the ccc and ddd in it. so just installing that updated my drivers rite?
-
Just get a T61p.
-
I updated mine to 8.8(the drivers are actually just 8.522) and I noticed that my graphics card started running 1-2C more hotter then the stock 8.45 gateway drivers. So I just reverted back. Not worth it imo. -
-
-
Yeah - we can always get a skin to cover up the fuglyness...
Slayer: did you mod it? Follow the instructions on that link I posted on modding the drivers, and then installing them.
T -
hey how low have you guys underclocked the ati hd 2600?
another thing i wanted to know was how hot did the card get when it was overclocked, my amd gpu clock tool , recorded 83 degrees celcius and it was only oced to lik 513/613 :s
but the good news is i did manage to OC and a wonder how 13mhz can make a 10 fps diff in cod4 -
I'm down to c:97/m:123 MHz on a DDR2 HD2600.
-
if so does it slow down the aero crap or anyother lag have you noticed? -
I'm on vista. No slowdowns or lags due to underclocked gpu.
-
DriverHeaven also mirrors the drivers here
8.8 Vista 64-bit is here, 32-bit is here
You run whichever you need, let it create the C:\ATI\SUPPORT\8-8_vista32_dd_ccc_wdm_enu_67980 (67981 if Vista 64-bit) folder, and when it starts installing, cancel out. Then run mobility modder, navigate to the folder created above, and click "modify" and MM goes to work - takes about a minute or two... then go to the folder C:\ATI\SUPPORT\8-8_vista32_dd_ccc_wdm_enu_67980 or whatever it actually happens to be, and run the setup.exe in there, and select express install.
When it asks you to reboot, go ahead and let it, so the drivers go in right.

Ok I'm sure I'll regret this, but for someone who's REALLY stupid about editing technical things within their computer (but not computer illiterate), could someone instruct on how to overclock the HD 2600 w/ Vista 64-bit? Like with real simpleton like instructions? And then safe recommedations for how much to overclock it without hurting the laptop? I have the laptop in my sig, and just want a marginal boost. Not something that'll jeopardize the laptop. If any overclocking will jeopardize it, then I'll pass. But if I can boost it 10% or 15% and it was safe it'd be worth it.
BTW I randomly on my own downloaded that RMClock and my computer was having none of it lol. It installed, then when I went to run it it kept having errors etc. -
slayer, I use AMD GPU Clock to overclock the video. Open it up, change the values for your video card and click set clock. That's it.
Of course you will need to do this every time you boot, but I actually prefer that because if you are just web surfing or similar there is no need to OC the video. Extra pep for when you need it. -
slayerfaith1982 Notebook Evangelist
is there numbers ud recommend to overclock to that are safe but noticable performance gains?
-
slayer, you sound like me...I didnt want to overclock and cause damage
any over clock causes more heat, which is not good
however i tried undervolting my cpu which is safe and easy to do with rmclock..and i was able to use the lowest possible voltage settings and get 15c off the load temp ..
now when i overclock to say 600/675 (safest for performance ive found) my temps after running under full load for hours will not go past 72c and usually drops to 50-60 when the fan kicks in..
to give u an idea, under load stock settings stock speed ect after playing cod4 for 2 hours, my temps went as high as 85c...which is def not a safe temp range and about 70c idle..
so If your smart about it, UNDERVOLT your cpu, Then OVERCLOCK core to 600 and mem 650-675(high mem clocks seem to cause artifacting and dont boost performance much.
but I would not recommend overclocking without a cooling pad or undervolting on your particular laptop...
so yea its safe to overclock on the hd2600 i read up on it quite a bit, and it is basically underclocked.. -
and if your curious about the gains...it gives 15fps extra in crsis with everything low...everything medium it gives an extra 5fps, ccs went from 123 fps to 183 fps
overclocking on this seems to speed up the shader capabilities dramatically, btw overclocking 15 percent is like 575 core..but going to 600 has no side effects..
if u want more performance i suggest wait for new drivers insteadm my stock 3dmark with the mobile drivers was pretty low first run i ever did was like 6500..now after driver updates its at 7400 stock 3dmark05 that is..i noticed bigger gains with driver updates and game patches than overclocking(exception source games)
and to answer your question
600/666 is stable and safe
big gains with those speeds aswell ...btw your card is meant to be overclocked, if you look at the strengths and weaknesses of the hd2600 u will find it only has 4 rops but has a good 120 unified shaders(these dont process dynamically just static one at a time) so when u overclock it your essentially changing your gpus brain power(120 seperate calcs for shaders x ocing=heavenly performance gains)
also you should be glad you have the hd2600, because like i said once before if you overclock with this card, you will see game framerates much higher because of the 120 unified pipelines...the 8600mgt gddr has more rops 8 i think and a bigger fill rate i think..but 32 dynamic unified shaders(more efficient) however overclocking on games like crysis seems to make no differance compared to overclocking on the hd2600..i have photos of it in my private messages if u want proof..u can try running his settings without his overclock, and im sure u will ge 4 fps better..i got 7-9fps more...
lol in short overclcok dude, im obssesed with this card now..before meh...now hola crap it plays crysis bioshock cod4 all games much much better(thinking its the 120 unified shaders impacting the overclocking results in game) -
slayerfaith1982 Notebook Evangelist
yea the whole overclocking/undervolting and temperature (in celcius of all things) confuses me so I like it dumbed down. If the AMD gpu tool really is just put in a few figures and simplified I may be OK w/ that lol

i tried just about every kinda..dna modded desktop drivers xt drivers(6993 stock) and the best is def the 8.8..get like 50 more than dnas
once dna releases 8.8 ill switch to them and u should get another 200-300 points..wait about a month
ok do exactly what this guide says right now...because its safe..will only help your laptops longevity and battery performance..
http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=235824
and if u have troubles ill help u for the next hour..
note dont bother doing the load program its a waste of time..i have roughly the same laptop as u..just set all the volts to the lowest turn off 12x mult and 11x if u want even safer overclocking..i didnt notice a diff going from 1.66ghz to 2 ghz..minimal performance loss because your 2 cores are rarely if ever running at 2ghz even during crysis..and i did a benchmark using 3dmark06 with underclocked cpu..i lost 500 oints..but even some drivers brought it down from 8300 to 4500...so dont worry about it..it will reset back when u restart anyways
next off topic lol...download vlc media player..you can play high def videos from microsoft in the background...it is one of the sweetest graphical updates available with vista...right ow i have a booty shaking contest looping in the background, and computer runs wickedly fast still
and on topic...if your sick of hearing about how much better the 8600m gt ddr3 is check this out...
http://img5.uploadhouse.com/fileuploads/2482/2482465234bf8c2aa6e633cccfcbe5655ad7560.jpg
notice he set the rez to 1280x720..lol trying to be sneaky..so let them have 3dmark06..but ill take the extra 7fps in crysis
dont even overclock..just run his settings and notice u will get more frames per sec easily..his is overclocked btw
that videocard stabilty test i got him to do for me, i got 102 overclocked to the max..he got 169 which is amazing..but in game u will see the diff..the opposite diff..
lol on the funny side..he sent a bunch of prive messages until i posted my results..lol shut up the 8600mgt gddr3>hd2600 gddr3 arguement fast.. his processor is faster his card hsa higherbandwith ect but ingame the hd2600 is definetly better..
took me a while to get honest feedback with actual photos..a movie would be great but a photo was all i needed
thats whyy im always arguing about which is better, because ive tried both lol..and the diff when overclocking in hugely in favor of the hd2600..also gdd3 vs ddr2 is only supposed to gain 15 -20 percent in performance..not 50-60 percent like the scores people post suggest.. -
Slayer, I had my 2600 card up to 620/720 and it was stable.
As suggested, I would be sure to undervolt the CPU first to lower the heat. -
lol dude..i forgot to undervolt my cpu and running the HD video wallpaper mystock clocks ect it went to 83c again lol cpu went to 90c very hot...haha so i open rmclock undervolted to my settings..and it sharply dropped too..ahh let me check ..59-61c lol wayyy cooler and i let the HD wallpaper running so its full load still..and i got to see the effect of undervolting right away..it is a huge diff..fan heat is already getting cooler..
also i will over clock to 620/720 and run crysis benchamrk for 20 runs...gonna see how hot it gets running the hd wallpaper in the background..dumb i know but im good at being dumb..i just wastress it to the max an ill post my max temp when its done...be back in 30 min or so..wish my computer luck... -
Nah, that's not dumb, just call it real world testing!
-
slayerfaith1982 Notebook Evangelist
if i have to undervolt while using that ATI gpu clock tool to overclock my GPU, i dont know how to, unless there's an equally easy way of doing that. This all sounds terribly complicated lol and im very lazy. I haven't downloaded that AMD gpu tool yet as im at work. But i shouldnt overclock the gpu w/o undervolting the cpu?
-
yes and yes slayer faith..
Its not complicated lol..if i can do it...anyone older than 10 can do it
and i did a long ong long benchmark too see if that dude was right...i actually did it hoping to prove him wrong and argue..but sigh hes right
620/720 overclocked is very very stable..news to me but w/e
and after undervolting and overclocking to his recommendations i did a stupidly hard benchamrk lol
i ran high definition direct x wallpaper in the background while i did my maxium crysis config..lol got 19 fps still amzing but dude im still in shock
hwmonitor says my max temp during 100 percent pu load and 100 percent gpu load while massively overclocked....drum roll
72 freekin degrees C.......which is cooler than stock plus UNDERCLOCKING..
iwhen i did the same test whith no gpu changes all stock lol i got 90c...lolz
I ran it and i still cant understand why dude..
all i can say is im very very very stinking happy and that i will run 3dmark again, and show u i can get 4500-5000 with default rez ect...lolz basically 2000 3dmark06 extra points...and man...thats like having a normal hd2600 and a 8600m gs power combined
and like i said earlier the only way to decribe the overclocking in this is that it makes a huge diff in game vs other cards...because of the unified stream proccessors..
all low 1280x800 i get 35 fps...withthis new overclock i get 72fps avg lol
thats twice the freeking speed..so yea def overclock but U MUST undervolt
if i was a moron..and i am ..I overclocked without undervolting for a bit and my gpu temp along with my cpu hit 95c...thats after only 4 benchamrks in a row
and i did a benchmark with 20 times that amount..took an hour roughly and i got 73c max..running at around 63 with fan kicked in..
now before this i checked the max overclock at 640..now im positive i can get it to 700 core...ill get back too u on that one
undervolting is easy i gave u the flippen link to the tut..i aint going read it for u..u need to do somethings on your own...and besides..if u dont then its just your loss..cuz im not talking small gains...i mean huge...HUGE lol
good luck with everything and if u need help from rambling ryan holla -
slayerfaith1982 Notebook Evangelist
Lol okay well could you link to the direct 2 links where to download the AMD GPU overclocking tool and then a link for the CPU undervolting tool so I don't hafta search and mistakenly download the wrong ones? Then let me know how simple the intructions are? Could PM them to me too if easier. Thanks in advance.
-
ok
gpu here download
http://www.techpowerup.com/downloads/1128g/amdgpuclocktool-9.8.msi
rmclock download here
http://cpu.rightmark.org/download/rmclock_235_bin.exe
hw monitor(tells u the temps)
http://www.cpuid.com/download/HWMonitor_110.zip
thats as simple as it gets so dont complain
more complex things like
1) install the programs
confused yet?? u shouldnt be a kid could do that
next open rmclock
click on profiles
uncheck 12x mult and 11x mult
then set all the volts for the rest to the lowest..should be 0.9500v
simple so far
now above in the same window..on current tabs select performance on demand for battery and plugged in tabs...
done if u need photos
and more detail here
http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=235824
done and done...and i hope u know how to turn off powerplay..lol
and if u dont then open advanced cataylst settings
click the powerplay setting on the left....and look in that window(POWERPLAY) UNCHECK POWERPLAY
thats all u need to know...
hope that helps
if that dont work for u ..aka too complex i suggest trading your laptop in for a ABACUS and saving the 890 dollars for computer courses..just kiddin....but good luck with this and let me know your results
Abacus
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
An abacus, also called a counting frame, is a calculating tool used primarily by Asians for performing arithmetic processes. Today, abaci are often constructed as a wooden frame with beads sliding on wires, but originally they were beads or stones moved in grooves in sand or on tablets of wood, stone, or metal. The abacus was in use centuries before the adoption of the written modern numeral system and is still widely used by merchants and clerks in China, Japan, Africa, India and elsewhere. -

Okay I'll try this after work.
So 620 for the processor and 720 for the memory w/ the GPU?
And what do I undervolt my CPU to? I don't understand all the screen caps of certain voltage numbers they showed in the pics so was curious what you both had it set at? Or can you just put in like 1.67ghz and be done with it? -
lol its pretty simple...
lower it too the lowest..works for me and should work for u..
like when u see the settings...and a million volt settings
just select the absolute lowest voltage... -
Slayer, if you are using Vista 64, to install RM Clock for undervolting you will need to go to the bottom of the tutorial where they tell you how to install a digially signed driver so it will start; w/o that you will only pull your hair out.
As for what to undervolt to, we can't really say, as all chips can differ a bit. Just start by undervolting it by 1 or 2 notches in the drop down and test it for stability. That is the best way to know for sure what you can do. As a reference, I got my highest down from 1.25 to 1.00 stable. -
slayerfaith1982 Notebook Evangelist
yea man no need to be disrespectful or anything. i'm just very nervous about messing w/ internal laptop settings and effing up a brand new laptop permanently by changing a setting i have no idea how to. That's why I wanted a simple and easy "set this to this, and this to this" rather then "tinker around with things that say 12x and 11x etc" cuz I have no idea what 12x or 11x are referring to or even mean.
Sorry for all the questions but I do appreciate the help thanks -
@Slayer, undervolting won't mess it up. As the tutorial says, the worst to happen is a blue screen (or in my case Orthos failed).
@Ryne, we have virtually the same laptop parts, how did you break 4k in 3dmark06??? Best I could do is 3800!!! LOL -
and after some more benchamrks id recommend unticking 11x and 12x mult..it essentially underclocks your cpu..
dont think about all the posts about faster cpus yadda yadda quad this quad that extreme q9820 overclocked to 9203ghz ..lolz...just understand it doesnt make a diff...even crysis doesnt max my cpu..not even close..so whats the point in having something that costs 900 dollars more and the benifit is only 20 percent better real world performance..and thats only if u can get the cpu load that high which in common use is nearly impossible.
so in short..F.. people with there moronic reasoning..your laptop is a sweet deal and having better parts at a cent more is dumb..
like paying 1199 canadian for a 320gb hardrive..blueray drive..9500m gs
vs 250gb hd dvd burner hd2600 for 800...lol the hd2600 is better so if u want games its better as long as its the gddr3 version..and the hd 320???*** you gotta pay 400 more for 120 gb???lolz..and blueray yea fun watching blueray on a 15 inch...thats why they made it lolz...dvd is high quality on a 15 inch..in fact mine display still doesnt display the full quality of a dvd...why the heck would i need a blueray if it cant even handle dvd quality???lolz...ALSO 2.2ghz vs 2.0???um yea right 0.000000001 milliseconds faster when opeing files..smart..so basically 400 for 120gb extra, worse graphics card, blueray u cant even notice the diff from dvd, and the 0.2 ghz diff that is infinatly small too notice in use...
lol done that rant...got it outta my system -
lolz u cant break 4000??
dude that isnt hard to do..not sure how to get it lower
what do u get on 3dmark05??
infact i will underclock it to 1.2ghz lol well as close to that as i can get...run 3dmark at 575/666 and tell u if its over 4000.
brb -
I don't know about the 05 version, I'm downloading it now so I can test it tonight.
-
mullenbooger Former New York Giant
-
mullen..yea thats actually pretty sweet then...
mind u i can do the same..but most people have dvd already.
i dont care cuz i dont have a high def 50 inch lol..most people dont..
but anyways ...here goes
i underclocked big freeking time...i still got 3810 3dmark06
so like i say i dont know how the heck 3800 is your max..
also my max temp was only 71c.(gpu).61c(cpu)now its at 34c lol..pretty **** cool if u ask me -
can someone give me a tutorial on how to underclock low enough to get 3600 3dmark06 points???
-
Hmm, even with the system undervolted and the gpu OC'd to 634/729 the best I can seem to do is 3861. Oh well. I guess my processor just doesn't have the chops. LOL
