i got my cpu undervolted and i installed the ati gpu tool, but it says "cant open kernel driver" when i try to open it now, and says i need to run as administrater. I tried right clicking to do "run as adminitrater" but the option isn't there. Suggestions? I used the direct download link provided by ryan. I have 64-bit vista

lol sorry not sure but this says it supports vista 64bit

try ati tool..i like it because u can set profiles for certain games..even downclock on battery power..
http://dl.techpowerup.com/Tweaking/ATITool/ATITool_0.26.exe
ok and because i regret overclocking to 700 lol...i dont notice much diff from 640 as 600 stick with 600 core and less than 700 memory...but since u already undervolted im sure even 640 is safe now...
1)dont forget to turn powerplay off
2)make sure u run hwmonitor in the background for the first little while too see how your temps do..play a game for about 10 min then close the game and check the temps..max temp mean the max temp it reached since u started the program..
3)dont let 3dmark06 mislead you into thinking your only getting slight improvements..try crysis all low..then over clcok and on all low notice the diff..should be about 10-20 fps faster depending on the overclock -
slayerfaith1982 Notebook Evangelist
okay i tried and overclocked n undervolted and as suspected think i f*cked everything up as i got a warning about my cpu core getting too hot. How do i figure out my default GPU clock? Will restarting my computer put the GPU back at default? I hit the "restore defaults" option and it put it at 297 engine and 405 memory, which i know is lower then when i started off with. HELP! lol
i already know my CPU defaults was everything at 1.25 and everybox checked. Now just wanna put my GPU back at default n forget i ever tried any of this -
Your GPU is showing those default numbers because you have Powerplay enabled in the ATI Catalyst Control Center.
If you want the GPU to always run at its default settings then disable Powerplay.
I just tried undervolting and overclocking my gpu today. i was able to undervolt to 1.0375 and overclock the gpu to 600/700.
i ran orthos for an hour with no errors. my system temps also improved alot. I also have been playing a bunch of games all day with no problems. I ran 3dmark and my numbers jumped from 3600 to 4135 -
slayerfaith1982 Notebook Evangelist
great i just rebooted and it wont reset my gpu default clocks. I think it was 400 and 500, but it wont even let me put those f*cking numbers in. I put em in and hit "set clock" and it puts em at some stupid random numbers like 8 numbers off. Have i ruined my laptop? I'm bout to be pissed. Maybe i should do a factory default restart and undo this travesty
-
slayerfaith1982 Notebook Evangelist
no i dont have powerplay enabled. i didnt ever have powerplay enabled. i undid it 1st thing.
now i just want everything back to how it started n i cant! -
are you using the "AMD GPU Clock tool"?
btw the default GPU settings should be 499.50/594 -
slayerfaith1982 Notebook Evangelist
yep
sorry 4 the freakout i just panic easily and didnt wanna mess up a new laptop w/ something i was mildly uncomfortable with to begin with -
slayerfaith1982 Notebook Evangelist
maybe my defaults were 405 and 505. it'll let me set it at those. that seems rite. does anyone remember what the defaults are?
also oddly enough i could have SWORE my default CPU settings were all boxes checked and everything at 1.25. But if i hit "restore defaults" it puts it at all these random numbers where each one varies. Whats up with that? -
maybe someone else more familiar with RMCPU Clock can help you on the CPU settings. did you follow the guide from Flipfire? it's pretty easy to follow and almost impossible to screw up. -
slayerfaith1982 Notebook Evangelist
i followed it and didn't notice any discernable improvement in the 2 games i tried
not worth the hassel trouble and risk for me lol im too faint of heart to play w/ fire w/ a new expensive investment for me
on a side note, if i uninstall both Rightmark and AMD GPU tool will that absolutely ensure that everything goes back to normal? -
most likely if you uninstall both apps you should be fine.
also if you dont have Rightmark running in the first place your CPU should be default to stock settings.
i'd also try again once things calm down for youmy max temps went down alot by undervolting. maybe you should just stick with that first and try overclocking the GPU at a later time or when you get more courage
-
lol dude dont give up...it isnt dangerous at all dude...your cpu was over heating because thats the program..mine over heats default..u should still lower your voltage to make it run cooler..i dont have alot of money to ruin this laptop with...so i took the time too reasearch and it is safer to undervolt dude...UNder volt...and overclock to 560 at least..u will not have problems in fact power play will bump up the speed automatically..if need be...but if Your worried about wreaking your comp it just wont happen...the software wont allow it...if fact if it gets ovrclocked to high the software will reset to default values...ame...if the temp gets to hot your comp will turn off..but i def would not recommend giving up...I used to overclock a integrated card...and the effects are more dangerous by far vs a dedicated card..most manufactures advertise a cards overclockability for a reason...no reason to not over clock....
I came back hoping you would have succeded..looking forward too seeing you much happier..but think about it this way...everyone that owns a hd2600 if you goole it ...overclocks..because its a well known fact that the core is indeed uderclocked.. -
also this takes a little bit of time to do right..its not a point and click process
you should step up the speed 25mhz or so at a time...and often times the display will white out...but thats ok aswell..usually once i hit past 575 the screen goes white for a min then resets back..bump it up further...white again...thats ok..just the software..the hardware can withstand pretty high temps..and u wont wreak it simply turning it up without playing a game...i suggest checking your voltage with cpuz...because when i first tried i failed big time dude..i did what i was told and it wasnt working properly..it got very hot..
so all i can say is i got my computer faster at cooler temps ...much much safer than stock..
i can guide you through it if you want..but i highly recommend NOT gIVING UP -

oh good grief is it possible i fried my wireless card it got so hot? or that those programs may have fried it somehow? my connection is really spotty now. like i hafta hit refresh 5 times to get a page to load. it's not doing it on my other computer, and it didn't do it before i made this mistake
-
slayerfaith1982 Notebook Evangelist
im serious could these awful programs have caused my internet to not work? i can get notebookreview.com to work, but not even google.com comes up. my zune software doesn't connect to the internet. i have to hit "refresh" repeatedly to even get a page 2 come up. ive reset my modem and my wireless router, and it's still doing it. ive restarted my laptop no less then 4 times. still is doing it. should i do a fresh reformat and wipe my computer clean? god this was such a stupid mistake
-
slayerfaith1982 Notebook Evangelist
*sigh* well you all seem very quick to encourage people to do stupid things with delicate components of their hardware, but then when things go wrong, you all disappear. I guess I have to now exchange this 3 day old laptop already at Best Buy because of incomplete advice and foolhardiness on my own behalf. I'm drunk now so forgive the harsh language but my laptop is now RUINED....FOREVER. That's very obnoxious when i barely could afford it in the 1st place.
-
dude lol...its not ruined..theres no way...ill stick around and help
-
you couldnt have wreak the comp lol..thats not a possibility if u did what we said..theres just no way..i puched mine to the limits where the screen was tearing and the temps reached 95c..now i doubt your went as bad as my first run...
just restart the process but ill step u through it ok? -
-
and if u unistal rmclock it will keep the old settings lol....my internet was slow when i downclocked..so i bumped it back up...played crysis for the last hour fiddling with ssao values
, i know its screwed up i know whats wrong from your description..lol so even if your drunk i can still help..im going to get drunk aswell and step u through it so your comps as good as mine and runs safer....i really really do not want to wreak this comp..so if i did it to mine theres no way id give u bad advice..money doesnt grow on trees and i have to work hard for my money..but yeh holla and ill get yours just like mine...but set you up with very very safe values..below mine..ok deal...get back here
-
-
trf inferno what are u talking about? if your not running a game or using the gpu how does that matter...sometimes i just jump 140mhz...whoever told u told bump up in 4mhz incriments is a idiot..because usually when u bump it up 4 it goes back to the original values..lol id be spending months just using your method...and my overclocking would be at around 0mhz...
if your gpu isnt under load explain how telling the software to run the gpu faster underlaod even before it starts working is dangerous..?????
if i was running a game in a window...id still not overclock in 4 mhz incriments..thats ridiculous lol....infact ill check right now if thats possible...lmao i just did it the screen went white for 30 sec..then went back too the original..now ill put it to defaults and bump it 100mhz...lmao my screen went white almost lost this message turning it to defaults...
ok now ill bump it up 100..ok same thing but less time...all in all the screen goes white randomly..all u do is ride it out..but after like 5 min just restart lol...thats why slayer shouldnt worry the display driver is just releasing because of a unsupported value..not because of heat...lol..my gpu reads 45c right now...and if thats overheating and wreaking my hardware, then lol they sold me a laptop the is default 80c..and defective than lol...unlikely -
slayerfaith1982 Notebook Evangelist
okay well i did the windows restore, then undid it (cuz that made things ever worse)
now my internet seems to be cautiously working. I uninstalled all the GPU stuff, but it when i go to my program uninstall list it doesnt let me uninstall the RMClock program. So I dunno how to get rid of it. Im defragmenting now to make up the file damage i most likely did by using a restore point w/ the computer. Just now worried if i should leave things as they are, or just cut my losses and exchange the laptop within the 14 days while i can. Once u mess up files, it's **** hard to make the computer run as well as it used to in my personal experience. -
trf that is very poor advice u will cause him more problems doing that than helping him...his drivers are fine...he used rmclock and unselected 12x and 11x mult...meaning he underclocked his cpu..then he unistalled thinking everything will be back to normal from listening to another dude in here..well it isnt..and the advice hes getting is crap..no wonder i fix things and research myself...
slayer..install rm clock again...it has a program to reset your reg values ..u must use this before u unistall...rmclock wipeout....bet no one told u that yet... -
slayerfaith1982 Notebook Evangelist
i put RM clock back to the values it was set at the beginning (meaning i re-checked boxes 11 and 12, and put everything back to 12.500 volts which is what they were at when i 1st opened it)
However i didnt even uninstall it cuz it doesn't give me the option to uninstall it -
also..your internet is not screwed up..your drivers are fine and your hardware is fine..
just understand u underclocked your cpu..and windows will run slower than usual..same with the internet..i experienced it myself.
i think u should do this thing again but ill guide u step by step...using what i have making sure u dont have diff values...u have the same comp and i still highly recommend you use what i suggested...like i said and thousands of others would say...it will help your computers batterylife and your laptops performance by underclocking...your model runs naturally hot due to the heatsink..and overclocking over 100mhz and less will not cause problems in 5 years nevermind today.....
also most improtantly i hold my word...im drinking now even
just dont listen to those other dudes -
see slayer i was right..i know what i was talking about...
u would have never ever figured that out dude...woulda took u a long time to get your comp back too normal.. -
so are u down..do u wanna make it work or what im here ..and i want to help one person out today...doing the down volting thing is big..and makes overclocking 100mhz..safer than running stock values 500/600
-
slayerfaith1982 Notebook Evangelist
well there's a level of comfort knowing YOU personally didn't f*ck anything up w/ your computer. i dont have that anymore which sux lol
i hav the internet again, and i reset the RMclock to what it was when i 1st opened it. Is that good enough? I mean I want to leave well enough alone at this point. Putting those settings back to what i just said though should be OK right? I also put the GPU clock back to the original settings -
wholy shot bro...12.5volts..ur gonna wreak it...
dude click on advanced cpu setting now....and quickly check latop at the bottom..and if its selected...click auto detect..then apply...it will ask u too reboot if it doesnt just close program and reopen it -
no dude...continue on with me...or add me to yim..so i can send u photos of the exact settings fast
-
slayerfaith1982 Notebook Evangelist
12.5 is what all levels were set on when i 1st opened it ever. So i figured that was what i should have put it back on
-
i could take a picture of each step then u simply check what i check...very easy to do..and will work 100 percent for sure..cuz mines way cooler and ive had this for a while..i do tests on stability and performance everyday making sure its doing well...my computer runs faster when its cooler aswell..
-
slayerfaith1982 Notebook Evangelist
well im still having internet issues so not even sure how comfortable i am w/ that cuz i couldn't even ensure i was connected. i MAY just be my connection messing up, but since ive never ever had this issue previously til i messed w/ these overclock things it makes me feel like its cuz of that.
plus i already uninstalled the amd gpu thingee. i woulda uninstalled the CPU rmclock thing but it doesnt have it in my "uninstall program" list in the control panel -
-
slayerfaith1982 Notebook Evangelist
lol yea my bad 1.25 woops! so if i went back to those i should be good yea? and put my GPU back to it's default 500 and 600?
-
yea..maybe...yea 494..594 or something
-
so i would assume if you simply do not have it started then your cpu should run at it's default settings. -
slayerfaith1982 Notebook Evangelist
ok yea i havent started it. i can't uninstall it for some reason or another cuz it doesn't seem to have that option. but i havent restarted it.
maybe my internet is just messed up and my paranoia and uncomforableness with doing this in the 1st place joined 2gether in a batch full of awfulness lol -
also i think it was this site not your internet...mine kept saying connection timeout..and was runnning slow when i loaded this site
-
btw ryane0840, what kinda temps (cpu, gpu, etc.) are you getting, let's say after a couple of games or after you run benchmarks? before and after undervolting/oc'ing your gpu?
-
slayerfaith1982 Notebook Evangelist
yea i was also having issues w/ google.com too so i dunno maybe it was this site too combined w/ google sucking
-
give it one more go for these three reasons
1) easy and cannot screw up your comp
2) improves heating issues and increases performance
3) your laptop will last longerndrun aster at the cooler temps -
ront lts help him out..he will be much happier with the results...i was so **** happy when i got it working...still cant believe it
ront mine runs very very cool now..before it was like on fire or something..got very hot ..
idle its at 28 underload71 -
lol it all sounds so dangerous..underclcking cpu...overclocking gpu...stuff i never wanted to mess with...took me a week to decide it was safe after reading for hours and hours
lol and im very veparanoid..been to a mental hospital twice -
slayerfaith1982 Notebook Evangelist
well i KNOW my comp got way too hot before cuz as i said i didnt notice an improvement in the 2 games i played?
well the 2nd one i played started having freezes every 2-3 seconds, where it'd run smooth, then freeze, run smooth, then freeze. Like clockwork it'd do it every couple seconds. The fan was going as fast and loud as it could. Then when i closed out of the game cuz i got worried, the "CPU too hot" warning came up.
After that is when i noticed all the internet mess-ups -
lol..same thing happened to me my first time i freeked out man...got sooooo pissed...
but i didnt change some settings..the cpu wasnt even undervolted like i thought..so the gpu was getting too hot..like yours was..
download cpuz...it will tell u the volts speed ect..wanna make sure yours is running normal -
slayerfaith1982 Notebook Evangelist
well defragging now to undo all the restore crap i did, so not sure if its the best idea to download and install another modding program during a defrag
however when i set the RMclock back to the initial levels of 1.25 it was showing it fluctuate between 1.99 and 2.0 ghz so i think its back 2 normal
