I was waiting for your comment, Quad![]()
As I said, realistically - 20-25%. Optimistically - 35-40%![]()
-
yes it has m3870 -> m4870 was such a jump
-
Some new info leaks out. 6800 slower than 5800 in 3Dmark06 and Vantage but even the 6850 is faster than GTX 460.
-
I saw those numbers a few days ago posted at pconline.com but ignored them for one important reason:
Screenshot or it didn't happen. -
Agreed. It's funny that we are just a few days before the release and there are still no real numbers.
-
amd is good at keeping secret
-
True, it's unsettling to say the least but I think everyone agrees that it won't be the kind of minor upgrade that most people expected back at 6 months. Barts should kick good old 5850's , which means AMD has to drop its price while selling Barts at a higher price point or else nobody will buy the outdated chip. Trouble is Cypress is costly to produce, more than Barts so they don't have a lot of margin at the bottom. But on the other side Barts has to be somewhat competitive with GTX 460 price-wise even if it offers much more performance. So, taking bets here
-
Finally!! Looks like the mobile chips won't be far away for us now! The high end mobile chip HD68XX will be based on barts pro, right? Hope it gives a good performance boost over the current mobile HD5870. Now we only need to wait for Intel to release sandy bridge!!
-
More info! - keep em coming!
-
please excuse me if this has been asked before but there is a lot of pages to read through. Does AMD release its products in any particular order? based on past releases can we tell if they will release the high end first or low end and where will the mobility line feature in? I know it is all guesses...but wondering if you can do some speculation based upon their past showings.
-
usualy they release thier higher single gpu card first but it seem like this time they are going for mid end first
-
yep and that's not a good sign to me regarding the high end level
as it looks to me it is more a way to counter the mid end gtx 460
I see more a price war with nvidia than a performance war
it looks good to me at the mid end card level (best bang for buck) but not at the high end level -
Here we are mostly interested in notebook cards. So at this point, performance wise it doesn't really matter, it all boils down to the TDP. This is why I prefer to wait until the first reviews that measure power consumption come out, those will tell us what to expect in the mobile segment.
If most of the preliminary information is correct, then it is likely that the 6000 series architecture will provide a 20% (maybe 25% at most) performance bump over the current ATI M5870. But until we see some real benches and power consumption numbers, nothing is certain. -
That is good news for the mobile market where the "mid-end" performance desktop GPUs are used as the high-end mobile GPUs.
The preliminary information is suggesting a 25%+, closer to 30%, performance bump for a mobile card based on Barts PRO. A Barts PRO that performs above a desktop GTX 460 and below a desktop HD5850 is on average between a 22% to 34% increase over Juniper XT/HD5770. -
@Phinagle
That is correct but it also runs a bit hotter:
114W vs. 108W (5770).
And we don't know how well will the new architecture scale down to 65W. -
I think 75W is the only realistic target, for a Barts chip.
-
I think it's time for AMD to join the 100W TDP battle.
-
While Barts PRO may run a little hotter than Juniper XT the architecture actually runs a lot cooler than the previous generation and should scale down to 65W (hopefully 75W) more easily.
But even if the two generations scaled down by the same ratios that 6W at desktop speeds is only ~3W at mobile clocks, which would still leave the whole card under what a MXM 3.0b slot can handle. -
If you want to be really optimistic, Barts XT at 900Mhz leaves a lot of downclock room to fit the GPU into obtainable notebook TDPs.
-
That's what I was thinking. The question is - What will yield better results (price/performance), a severely downclocked XT or slightly trimmed PRO?
-
Let's be more optimistic:
Mobility HD6850: Barts PRO (75w TDP) to kill properly the GT480m with 15% more perf
Mobility HD6870: Barts XT (100w TDP) to overkill the GT480m with 30/35% more perf
-
If , Mobility HD6870 proves to be even 20% more perf (at the same TDP's), it'd be awesome
. Let's hope so
-
I just wish they`d hurry up so there`s still a chance that the w87cu`s will support them.
-
I agree with you. When I talk about 65W, I talk about the graphic chip itself, because for the desktop Barts, AMD gave us the TDP of the graphic chips, so it is fair to compare apples to apples. For the mobile version, the GDDR5 and the board will get another 5-7W which should take it to around 70-75W.
I just think that anything beyond 30% is a little bit too optimistic. I did same calculations last night based on our preliminary information and I ended up with the mobile version of the Barts between 20 to 30% faster than the current M5870. I will be able to do more precise estimates when the official reviews of the 6850/6870 come out. -

Looks like the rumors of 800 and 960 shader counts for Bart PRO and XT are making a come back. -
For a fully powered Barts PRO, or maybe even some form of the XT?
Honestly, I would LOVE that move.
XT would probably have to take 700/900, or even lower.
I'll take the trimmed PRO. -
So if the 6800 series replaces the 5700 series, and the 6900 series replaces the 5800 series, what replaces the 5970 (which is two 5870s, right?)?
-
Antilles which should be Caymanx2.
-
Finally some real leaked information, my question though is when are the mid/low range cards going to start to come out?
-
January 6-9 at CES 2011 is probably a good guess.
-
I wish you were wrong but it's not gonna happen
-
Think of the bright side....you won't have to frustrate yourself debating whether or not you should buy a notebook with an HD6000 now or wait for Sandy Bridge.
-
For every bright side there's also a dark one
I have two laptops with 1200P screens and am very happy with the performance and quality. I'd prefer to keep the current tandem with a chance to upgrade GPU's, instead of waiting for something that might totally disappoint me (1080p, lower quality, worse screens, etc).
If 6870 shows up in March-April, then my best choice will be the GTX 400 - series. My next platform upgrade will most likely be synchronized with the next console refresh, when the GPU performance is really needed and 22nm is history both in GPU and CPU segments. -
Arnt the lower-medium mobility 6xxx series suppose to be announced in the coming week?
-
I'm hoping for a Sandy Bridge refresh of the Acer 3820tg, with a AMD Radeon 6650. If it is made, and it comes to North America, then I'll buy one.
Anyway, all of the recent rumors have been pretty consistent in regards to the naming scheme and potential capabilities. Although, that might be part of AMD's plan. I'm looking forward to at least a 10-20% improvement over the last generation in AMD's notebook parts. We still have to wait for many of Nvidia's parts to actually make it into notebooks as well, so this could be interesting competition. -
that would be one kicken system. I think alot alot of people would buy one lol!
-
It's up to Clevo not to disappoint me now.
-
The source Anadtech article is a better read....
Hopefully AMD's CEO considers mobile cards part of the family. -
Sounds like some good news to me, hopefully we will see a whole new set of laptops flood the market. Maybe this time with higher resolutions than 1366x768.
-
It's all about TDP, for W870CU owners. Well that and whether Clevo considers the W87 as EOL.
On the other hand, we have to expect them to make a permanent transition to the W880CU, eventually.
I hope they throw you one last bone. -
what about the x8100 model? if i bought one from xotic right now and the crossfire 6800 series show up,can i return it and tell them to upgrade the cards for a price?
-
That makes sense as Sandy Bridge has also started mass production and notebook makers can make new models with the new M6000 series and Sandy Bridge all in one. It will be a hit for them.
EDIT: In other related news, the 28nm process looks to be doing rather well: http://www.xbitlabs.com/news/other/...f_Low_Power_28nm_Chips_Shortly_Estimates.html -
That's not the good 28nm though.
28LP is TSMC's bulk fab using the same silicon that this generation's 40nm uses, and the good stuff, High-K Metal Gate 28nm, won't start for another few months. After TSMC gets that 28LP running (which still could be a couple more months) there's planning, tapeout and production which could take another 5-6 months before we see a GPU.
That is if either AMD or Nvidia decide to use it. They might, I don't know....it could help Fermi...but I'd rather they wait for HKMG. -
That is the #1 reason I haven't bought a laptop yet. The 4820TG is perfect and I can live without USB 3 and whatnot, but I have a feeling that higher res screens being more standard is just around the corner. Or I'm completely wrong!
-
Speaking of rebrands...
Nvidia working on GF100 successor
If Nvidia is truly planning to name that GF110 GPU as GTX 580 then I'm gunna have to start expecting name changes for GF104, GF106, and GF108 as well. -
Ya, I'm not expecting the 6870 to be supported, just the 6850. If they just added support for the 460m, then I don't see why they can't do this. It is of course up them, and they can just decide they don't want to.
If that were to happen, I'll wait for 28nm and buy a bare w88 that comes with one and swap all my hardware over.
