I've been playing since Battlefield 1942 and there has never been 100% teamwork/cooperation. Everyone keeps preaching about how BF2 was the "golden age" of the series because people suddenly started working together. The addition of squads, squad leaders and commanders were nice but it wasn't like every match you played had a capable commander (or any commander; half the games I remember playing nobody wanted to play the part because they wanted to pew pew. Lots of servers even had specific rules like *commanders have to hide and never shoot their gun etc etc*). Many squad leaders didn't know how to mark the next objective or didn't bother to. You would see all these medic/ammo boxes around not because people were really interested in helping each other but more because of the outrageous points you could rack up in a long infantry-only game. People would stand around choke points waiting for people to die so they can revive them over and over again. Grenade spam was insane because of all the ammo boxes. The few souls who did bother to flank around were almost always premade squads using mics.
So in reality, the only way you could get teamwork to work most of the time was to play on a single server with the same friends in the same squad dominating the same people. Every match there would be the same commander who knew what to do and when to do it (and didn't mind not shooting baddies) and the same squad leader who made the same runs outside of the map and back into it to cap that lone objective in the far back.
The best advice I can give for PC players who want to bathe in past BF2 glories is to do something similar: find one server you enjoy, make friends on that server, group up with three other regulars in a squad, get some kind of VOIP thing and dominate. It's seriously some of the most fun you'll ever have. Forget about hit-detection or realism for a second and just have fun and relax with friends. If you're PuGing every match it's definitely not the same.
*edit* I hate using the phrase "I've been playing since bla bla bla" because it makes it sound like I'm some how entitled to a higher opinion. Nope. I'm just a regular dude who plays them vidya games for fun and leisure. Not trying to better anyone. Just giving some friendly advice.
-
This I agree with ^^.
Even in BF3, very little knows how to use the simplified squad waypoint, which I found still hard to send the order. -
I hear ya. But squad and vehicle VOIP would help immensely. It has nothing to do with BF2. It has all to do with communication.
-
it sucks that only console players get to use squad voip and not pc players. They are supposed to be loyal to the PC players more because they are the ones that supported them from the beginning. wat da eff DICE.
-
Oh yeah, they NEED to put in a squad VOIP for sure.
One day...
-
To be honest, I have done this a few times. I would hang around a sniper and once they died I would just revive them. xD
Well there was definitely not 100% teamwork, it was visible on certain servers. Being part of a squad improves the experience when you are with a capable squad, there were times that my squad/squad leader would all be off at different places doing their own thing; I find it challenging to get others to properly function as a squad because sometimes other players don't care about that anyway.
Now in BF2 I was normally only a squad member/leader because I wasn't very interested in the commander position. However I must say the Commander position in 2142 is by far better IMO.
I remember I would stay in the titan and for the entire game I would just give out orders and use the scanner to tell the players about enemy positions. I wasn't really bothered by missing out on precious points since there are other opportunities to gain ranks, it's not like you have to be commander every match. Besides, as commander it's nice that you can do artillery, supplies, and I think vehicle drops. I can understand why most players want to just kill the enemy, but the command position is not all that bad.
Yeah I remember the good ole grenade spamming, it was annoying when I would just spawn just to die seconds later.
In BF2 I would just squad-up with random leaders, or random players would join me. Sometimes they would follow me/orders and other times they wouldn't, it's a hit or miss really. The friend system is much better in 2142 though b/c it has an actual friends list, so you can see if your friends are on or not. And you don't really need to have the same people play X role, anyone can fulfill a position and still be successful. A Sqd leader just has to have common sense and know to their squad logical orders to follow, and everything will be A ok.
I mainly wanted responses from people who have played other BF titles(excluding bad company) because I can't really get into this game like the others. There are things I haven't been able to do in BF3 that I can easily do in BF2/2142. I feel the BF series is going down the same path as crysis, as a result of migration to consoles.Last edited by a moderator: May 8, 2015 -
I've had great experiences in BF2 with just random people using squad VOIP. Pop in a game, join a squad and it helps immensely someone saying tank coming from B to C, or "your six!" or anything like that improves your awareness. BF3 is like a war with mute soldiers.

Two of my favorites were Road To Jalalabad and Karkand. In Jalalabad, the defending team would push the U.S. back to their spawn and chuck grenades over the hill. In Karkand it's the exact same thing, but you have buildings to ricochet the grenades off of. Man, those were some great times...
I HATE not knowing whose grenade is lying two feet away. I'm going to play on Hardcore mode more (read "RUN FROM EVERYTHING!"), but in Normal I just run from everything, as well. No "Friendly Grenade" marker? Nothing? -
The only game mode that people would work as a real squad is squad deathmatch, everybody has no choice but to stick together and watch each others back, its the only way to be the top team.
I know and I thought thought Dice would have added cooking grenades by now. To be honest, the game still feels like a beta game and not an official game. But still respect Dice for their work because there is no other military FPS game that are on BF3's level in terms of graphics and realism. -
Question: Did EA buy DICE or something? I thought DICE was the developer and EA was the publisher. I figured that means DICE would get to set the rules, but EA's pushing Origin, Premium for $50, and a slew of other things (iffy customer support, notwithstanding). I salute DICE for giving me BF2 and now BF3, but something's gotta give or more players will just get up and go.
I don't wanna see that
-
DICE is fully owned by Electronic Arts. They call the shots and the developers at DICE make it happen... or at least make it close enough.
-
ARMA2? Way more realistic than BF3.
-
Ugh... I was afraid someone was going to answer with this... Thanks, though.
(psst. DICE. Run. Run now. Before EA takes you all the way down with them.)
EDIT: And for some reason, when I clink the link in my e-mail saying I got a new post (forum.prod.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=550483&goto=newpost) it doesn't work. Only takes me here if I remove the ".prod" from the link. The hell is that about... -
You don't know many games do you? How about Red Orchestra 2: Heroes Of Stalingrad or ArmA 2 series for both "realisim" and graphics or Project Reality for just the realism aspect as military simulation game. Battlefield 3 is not even near "realism" when it comes to anything, but graphics quality. It is a pure arcade game with absolutely not depth to it.
-
yep arma has the best gun recoil
-
It is not about "gun recoil" or the animation, but rather about realistic ballistics. You're arguing for Battlefield 3 which has balanced weapons that perform nothing like they would in reality against a military simulation game that is designed by the same developers and based on VBS2 (Virtual Battlespace 2) which was developed in close cooperation with the USMC, Australian Defence Force and other military customers of VBS1. What are you even trying to argue here?
-
I think you guys are confusing "realism" with "fun". They are not the same, nor are they mutually exclusive. There are fun and realistic games, there are hyper-realistic games that really aren't that fun, and there are totally unrealistic games in both the fun and not fun categories.
-
I'm well aware of that and never made that argument, but rather corrected him on his claims about "realism" and Battlefield 3. In regards the combination of realism and fun, I haven't bothered to reinstall any of my ArmA games in almost a year and don't plan to do so anytime soon. At the moment a game like Red Orchestra 2: Heroes Of Stalingrad hits a good balance between realism and arcade for me. Battlefield 3 is now mostly reserved for moments of extreme boredom and need of quick excitement or playing skirmish with friends.

I'm not sure why people who hate BF3 post in a thread that advocates discussing and playing BF3. Bottom line, if you don't like it, don't play it. It is VERY obvious that many people that contributed to this thread (a vast majority, actually) enjoy BF3 enough to keep playing it. They may not enjoy all aspects, but it's pretty simple to understand that most people who don't like a game won't be playing that game. Those who play a game they hate because they're bored...I can't understand the logic of that. Do you actually still hate the game when you play it due to boredom? I hate olives but I eat them when I'm bored...doesn't make much sense.
I don't hate BF3, but there are some things I don't like about it. Realistic ballistics (or lack thereof, in your claim) isn't one of them. Nothing's wrong with that at all, IMO, except that DICE loves to tinker/nerf/denerf a bit too much in the quest for balance. The other game you mention is just that...a *different* game. A nectarine and a peach look similar but are not the same. It's the same with RO2:HOS and BF3. In fact, they're all just games, unless they're touted (and play) as actual sims. -
First of all Mr. Kim Jong Un, everyone has a right to their opinion whether critical or not and how about not putting words into other peoples mouths? I don't believe anyone here actually said they "hate" Battlefield 3, but rather criticized certain aspects and shortcomings. The other games which were brought into discussion were in response to a certain individuals claims about Battlefield 3 being the only "realistic" FPS shooter out there which is not true. In that regard, two examples of modern games such as RO2: HOS and ArmA 2 were provided to counter those claims. How about next time you spend the time to fully read and comprehend the discussions made before jumping into your own conclusions and advocating what someone should or should not do?
-
Read it all before I posted...kinda hard to not read it as actual complaining, though. I mean, a there's a whole page of it. Just sayin', how hard to you expect to beat that dead horse without some type of negative response?
-
AMEN! Every other post in this thread is someone talking about hating the game or how better the previous games were. It is getting really old.

I think the game is great. I just don't like the cheaters.

ive pretty much come to the conclusion that bf3 is a pretty excellent balance of realism, but it has been balanced to be fun. for instance, you dont want to have to shift the humvee into gear when you drive it, you dont want to have to hit a series of buttons to reload, and you dont want to have to reload the tank manually each time you fire a shot. why not, because there is nothing fun about those things, although having them would make it more realistic, it just makes it very difficult to have fun, because after all, we arent actually holding a gun, or driving a vehicle, we are typing on a keyboard and using a mouse. until we have holograms and suits that can create resistance against our movement, to emulate us touching real objects in the world, we cant have these realisms integrated into the game. basically what im trying to say is that right now with the technology that we can afford to own as consumers, this is as good as it gets.
and yes we do have the technology, its just expensive and hasnt been applied to gaming.

Of course, adding too much depth can actually make things confusing, challenging, and plain not fun for the average player. However, I do not agree with the balancing of the weapons by making two different weapons that fire the same exact round do completely different amounts of damage. For example, the G3A3 should have the same exact amount of damage as perhaps the HK 417 which also fires the 7.62x51mm NATO round (velocity due to different barrel lengths not as significant in damage). The balance should strictly be limited to a weapons unique characteristics of control-ability, effective range and maybe even weight, slowing down the soldier (large sums of 7.62x51mm ammo is a lot heavier to carry than 5.56x45mm). As for tanks, I like how Red Orchestra 2: Heroes Of Stalingrad has it. You can one-man the tank with AI taking the responsibility of the other positions and basically following your commands to move, target, and engage as if you're actually one-manning it. The benefit of this system is that you can become a much more effective tank crew if you have teammates taking each of those individual positions and working together, because of the combined awareness and speed dedicated to each individual could potentially make for a better tank. In-game voice which at the moment is lacking in BF3, would obviously be beneficial for these types of situations otherwise it wouldn't work too well. Eitherway, even this type of features are not all that common and especially since it wouldn't be following the gameplay style of the previous Battlefield series which people are familiar with. I believe the objective of EA/DICE was to make the game also familiar to Call of Duty players to potentially tap some of that fan-base as well. Personally, even with its flaws I prefer BF3's weapon customization better than what CoD had to offer and consider the balance unique in itself.

aduy, that link you posted is amazing... whoever developed that is pure genius.
-
Well, to be fair, in the 500ish pages there were people coming in here asking "should I get this game" or "how does this game compare with X or Y". For the most part it was recommended every time (with criticisms included).
I think the thread is pretty well balanced and represents the highs and lows of the game extremely well. I'd rather have it this way than "omg this game is leik so kewl its purfect lololol [insert over 9000 emoticons]"
-
I went from those links to being curious when better HUDs on vehicle windshield would come out (lol).
But I don't see any videos of the Novint that are new. Price too high? Technology too new? Anyone know what's up with that? -
its 120ish and it was compatible with bf2, and bfbc2, and apparently bf3 as well.
Novint Falcon Game Controller (White)
i would get one, but i dont think my parents would like that haha.
they also have it on their website for 250, and the pistol grip is 50 extra. -
LOL. $120 brand new, but we're just gonna keep it at $250.
Still curious why there seems to be nothing new on them, but I'll most likely end up trying one in the next year or two (as long as I can return it). -
it would be good for flying i think, man i really want one now, it would be awesome in 3d.

This is probably a well known problem, but I'm still gonna ask if anyone had succes of modding the nvapi.dll file.
After the recent CQ patch/update, my game stopped working, and it worked perfectly before that.

Somebody hacked my BF3 account. Changed the account email to Russian address. I can't log in, they changed the word. I can't log into my Origin account, I need to call them. I can't find their number on the website.
If you have a Yahoo email on your Origin account like I do, change your Origin and Yahoo passwords immediately. -
The only thing that made sense in your first paragraph was "Somebody hacked my BF3 account."
And how do you know that you being hacked has a direct correlation from you using your Yahoo e-mail as your Origin username? -
Started on BF3 again... Been like 2 months since I last played, and in 2 days I already ranked up from lvl 36 to almost 42
BF3 plays quite smoothly on this laptop... 35 on intense scenes, but average of 40-50, reaching 70-80 on all Ultra except shadows on High, SSAO, 16x AF and Medium post AA. -

a couple of thousand Yahoo! accounts have been hacked recently, with passwords dumped somewhere on the internet. i'm assuming your Yahoo! account was linked to your Origin account, right? were you using the same (or similar) password for both accounts? -
The accounts hacked weren't email accounts. They were Associated Content (now Yahoo Contributor Network) accounts.

^ i stand corrected then.

I was a bit worked up because I was unsure if I would be able to recover my account. Luckily, I called Origin support and they were able to set everything straight, really great service from them with regards to this.
My Yahoo e-mail and Origin passwords used the same password, that is no longer the case. Lesson learned. I guess I'll never really know how the hacker managed to change my Origin account email address to something else unless he got the password from Yahoo or something...
Either way, I had gotten a message earlier about suspicious activity on my Yahoo e-mail account and was asked to change my password which I did. Whoever did this also tried to open a PayPal account using my e-mail address but it seems PayPal blocked my e-mail from being used to create an account probably due to suspicious activity. So I'm assuming whoever it was had access to my inbox to "verify" their account. -
What number did you used?
I'm having that problem as well. But this is the 2nd time this happened.
Seem my recover email on origin is changed....
----------
Got it back....
My origin pw and my email pw are very different. My origin pw is stronger than my steam pw.
My rep needed only the correct DOB to change my account info. And nothing else. -
What's the best fxaa injector to use? I tried one but it killed my fps..
-
i like this smaa injector, it looks good, and doesnt take too much power either, like maybe 5% to 8% SMAA: Enhanced Subpixel Morphological Antialiasing. or any other smaa injector works good too.

Is anyone who is pretty good at flying/killing with jets willing to meet up on an empty server (preferably unranked) to practice in dog fights. I'm pretty bad, and i need practice/tips!
-
I'm pretty bad too, maybe we can be bad together. Two wrongs make a right, right? or wrong? I'm confused.
-

Sounds like a plan. I already have you on my friends list so next time I see you on we'll go try to shoot each other down! I'm usually on around 9pm EST -
^^This is an excellent idea (practicing in an unranked and empty server amongst friends)!

I could help you guys ^^
I'm looking for more wingmen to fly with me. (Don't mind training. Lucky for me, there's only a few ACM that works pretty much on most of the pilots.)
Don't forget to join DEagleson's mumble server, I'm usually there or idle in BL.
Oh by the way, I'm pretty bad at it too
-
LOL! I saw your stats...you've 28 jet service stars!! If that's bad, what is good?

Dunno, but 3 rights make a left.
