Thats not saying much for wiiu then, thats straight asking to be dated, dx10 was just converted dx9.c and from the wiki page doesn't sound like theres much improvement, were as dx11 adds Tesselation shader model 5, and better multithreading. Sucks for Wiiu right around now, rumors on the street is saying next gen consoles will be shown off at e3 2012.

But back to the BF3 discussion, the smoke almost seems volumetric rather than a poly plain being rotated with some alpha channel, kinda like the clouds in warhawk are volumetric, definitely realistic looking and is always one of the first things my eyes gravitate too when playing an FPS, how good does the smoke and explosions look!

What did BC2 use? And what's the toughest spec-wise?

Plain texture with alpha channel, the toughest is volumetric. Volumetric to my knowledge has only been in warhawk, unless someone knows another game with it. Basically volumetric cloud system would be similar to real life, a bunch of small particles making up a whole which would be the cloud. so computing the particles, and then shadow rendering and lighting on volumetric load would suck alotta juice out of a system. Think polygon plain like a leaf in a video game, its flat, rotates and follows the camera angle, same effect is applied to smoke and generally speaking most aren't very convincing, but there are some games that do smoke effects this way really well and hide that its just a flat polygon.

I don't want to be the one guy to argue, but I've owned all the CODs and they all feature a rotating alpha channeled poly plain. They also grow bigger and decay as they rise upwards....

http://www.fpsteam.it/img2006/call_of_duty_2/call_of_duty_2_04.jpg take for example this picture, its several layers of very large texture plains, they rotate grow larger and then disapear.

Why does the 30fps look and play so smooth on console, but on pc feels terrible?

Mafia II and Stallker:clear sky also had awesome volumetric smoke..
the tire burnout effects in mafia II were particularly impressive..how the smoke whirled around the tire and interacted with it..

anyway back on topic.. The smoke and explosion effects in BF3 look unprecedented..

However, i'm a little disappointed with the colour pallete.. Just like in BFBC2, all the colours look a bit drab and washed out.. I get it that this gives the game a movie/flashback like feel and in BF3 they probably wanted that desert haze feel but i'd rather if they were a bit more saturated to look life like..
    anyone else feel the same..?

Because the games are actually coded at lower resolutions and specifically for the hardware in the consoles as they are all the same making them more efficient.

I think it has to do with the speed and accuracy of a mouse. thumb sticks are slower and feel fine at lower frame rates.

Recon look weird. It too bad none of the model really matter since you can't play it in 3rd person when your running from point A to B and don't have to worry about getting shot so no need for 1st person.

The models look good and have a lot of detail, but I was expecting more of a "standard soldier" type look compared to what I would describe as the "solo special operative" look, much like the COD characters. Definitely screams more BC3 than BF3, but the difference between those two titles is getting pretty hazy these days.

BF2 featured USMC as the US faction, which is sort of a step above the 'standard' army soldier in a way.

From what I've heard those are not the official Battlefield 3 models, but rather fan made pictures. If they are the official characters then I'm pretty disappointed.

Does it seem like a pretty good bet that an M18x with GTX 580m in SLI should be able to run BF3 on max settings?

Can't say. Will it be able to run? Most possibly, but if you are looking to get constant 60+ fps, You'll probably need a decent desktop CPU to run frostbite 2.

But all speculation...hopefully a demo soon to ease/increase our worries!!

They were later confirmed by EA, though it looks like the leak mixed up the support and medic icons. Here's their official release, linked from EA's server.

The rifleman/medic looks alright and the machine gunner will pass, but the engineer looks like a fat hillbilly. I can't say I like the sniper either; he looks like a teen airsofter. By-the-way, in most militaries facial hair like that is not acceptable and that includes the Marines.

They already confirmed a long time ago that they were going to go with the same 4 class scheme as Bad Company 2. In this case we have Battlefield 2142 to blame for originally introducing such a limited selection. :(

Not really that affected, I played like 120+ hours of BF2, and the only classes you'd see were sniper, medic, support, eng and occasionally spec ops.

There were several redundant classes, so I was actually happy when they collapsed them into 4 only for BC2.

Here are the unofficial system requirements listed by game stop..

    original link

    Minimum

Hard Drive Space: 15 GB for disc version or 10 GB for digital version
OS: Windows Vista or Windows 7
    Processor: Core 2 Duo @ 2.0GHzRAM2GB
Video Card: DirectX 10 or 11 compatible Nvidia or AMD ATI card

    Recommended

Hard Drive Space: 15 GB for disc version or 10 GB for digital version
    OS: Windows 7 64-bit
Processor: Quad-core Intel or AMD CPURAM 4GB
Video Card: DirectX 11 Nvidia or AMD ATI card, GeForce GTX 460, Radeon Radeon HD 6850

I personally think they aren't accurate, 460 and 6850 sem too less given they were running it on a 580 at e3.. but perhaps and hopefully they've optimized it better!

    Pretty much what I expected.

Mind that at E3 they were running at 1080p, 4x MSAA, DX11 and maxed, and it was flawless. I predict Metro 2033's performance will be around thr same as BF3's.

Well Recommended doesn't mean Maximum. It's with most features enabled to give it what the devs feel is appropriate for the full "experience".

Those seem reasonable. Considering the GTX 485m/580m and HD 6970m can play BFBC2 at 1080p max detail > 30 fps, I see this as plausible.

actually it's fairly typical for soldiers in Iraq and Afghanistan to sport beards if they're going to be interacting with the locals out of respect for their customs.

Oh dear... it's just a rumor for the moment since EA has plenty of time to turn it around, but I'm hearing that BF3 will not be available on steam, because EA is trying to promote their awful origin thing. The link was here but I guess due to heavy traffic the site is dead.

Get a hard copy, problem solved. Although you will most likely still need Origin to be able to patch the game...EA already forced us NFS Shift 2 owners to install Origin if we wanted the latest patch/DLC.

I haven't looked at the source you're looking at, but soldiers often slide their kneepads down because it is uncomfortable and cuts off circulation to have them on the knees when they are not being used.
