Hopefully it doesn't take too long. The only concern that I really have is whether or not these cards will be compatible with the 18's current motherboard.

I have my sources too you know.

But that Videocardz article I got nothing to do with. It just happens to fit perfectly with my posts because everything I posted so far is true although we had some sceptisism from some people here. One would think the 600M series posts from me back in 2012 should have been some comfort but no :p

Doesnt Alienware play nice with GPU upgrades? In terms of locking out new cards with bios? I think so but not fully sure

    Yeah I think so too.
They had no problems running 7970M or 780Ms on M18x R1 and such so I dont think GTX 980M will be a problem

Alienware doesn't tie the video cards to the BIOS. Even my old M17xR1 posted with an 880M and let me flash it back so that my Clevo would POST again.

Hopefully Prema can get a mod that supports the new cards out for our Clevo machines.

Yeah Prema's bios even supported my 260M from my Alienware. Unfortunately my 120HZ lcd was left with a black screen but the system didn't shut off as and appeared to boot on through to Windows.

Now that I am married in a month I will have to upgrade until the wheels fall off, dont mind the machine is only 2 months old the only issue is I will have to find a good place to buy cards from. Not sure if upgrademonkey is a good option...

Finally, something to go by! Thank you, Cloud.

If the 970M is 3GB, the 980M must be 4GB, at least. That's good. I hope we don't see anymore 8GB cards with 880M voltage & heat issues.

It also means GTX 970M have a 192bit bus...

But it should still be a lot better than its Kepler counterpart, right (i.e. 870M)? You mentioned that Maxwell is much more efficient in regards to performance output.

    A ton better :)

Its not really surprising to see a 192bit bus on the 970M. Both 770M and 870M have that too. But its good to see it confirmed.
The bandwidth on the 970M can still be much better because Maxwell is known to have big L2 cache to help, but it remains to be seen what they do with GM204

    Why are they so over-hyped?

Is it because the cards are comparable to desktop cards?

To be fair, the 870M was a great card. If there could be a cool, less-power-hungry (which also means less heat), more powerful version of that, that'd be awesome. And the same for the 980M; would love to see a 100W, 30-40% over 780M, cooler card. For the first time I think I would try super hard to get 980Ms upgraded to my machine instead of what I have now if they came out and were not broken. Due to being a streamer like I am, sometimes I need to run stuff single-GPU, and due to how bloody hot my place is combined with how hot the game might make my card, sometimes single GPU could do with a bit of a power bump without an overclock XD.

And of course, when in full-on multiGPU, I'll just be bleeding power from everywhere. Mmmyes.

If the 860M is anything to look at, then yes. However you should never expect a "thin" gaming model with any kind of supreme power. Even the Razer Blade that people are touting as being such a "gaming laptop" because it's thin and portable sacrifices SO MUCH inside of it, and only uses midrange stuff; like the 560M and 660M in the past, while cutting out Optical drive slots, HDD caddies (opting for mSATA SSDs alone, and even then I think it only has 1 mSATA SSD slot), etc. Then the CPU is always the lowest end i7 model and you can't upgrade it... even now, the 860M gives a lot more power than people are accustomed to, but that quite literally has them take advantage of next-gen technology (since maxwell isn't fully out yet) to manage the heat for that level of power. When maxwell fully comes out, the 860M is going to be a joke compared to the rest of the series, both in desktops and laptops. It's only impressive now because it has no counterparts XD.

All the tiny, small-box-fitting-in-the-palm-of-your-hand all-in-one PCs that many manufacturers are making these days too are incorporating the 860M into the design because it's essentially a tiny 750Ti and that card plays games at high at 1080p almost everywhere.

Yeah GTX 870M will be HOOOOT compared to the GTX 970M I`m sure.
If GS60 can handle 870M, it can handle 970M too. 870M is above 100W I think and 970M should be well below. Plus you get better performance out of the 970M.

Its a win win situation :)

The 870M is a side-grade 680M (+220 core OC, dropped mem bandwidth to 192-bit bus but upped the clock to 5000). It's basically a mini 660Ti at this point. It should be 100W as far as I know; so a 75W 970M would do very very well for an upgrade.

I'm sure it will happen but if adoption rates of the previous cards are any indication of what they will do in the future it would be at least a good 3 to 4 months before it appears.

Well looks like I might not be buying into the a 980m laptop after all.

I was originally looking into this about a month ago due to my laptop getting stolen, but I've actually managed to retrieve my stolen laptop! If you're interested feel free to check out my thread here.

    http://forum.notebookreview.com/sag...-stolen-sager-laptop-dropbox.html#post9761478

If I do decide to buy a new laptop anytime within the next year or so, it will have to at least be equipped with SLI and it will have to at least have a broadwell or skylake processor.

I suggest waiting for skylake unless we get confirmation of socketed broadwell chips. Soldered-to-board is just going to be such a step backward in advancement.

If new Quadro cards come out with these 900 series GeForce cards, I might consider selling my current one, just because my needs for the laptop have changed since I bought it. (Not playing as much games as I used to haha).

    First post in this thread:

I think all of those are new unreleased Quadro cards
DEV.16xx is GM204 exclusive most likely. A quick guess is that the three of them will be Quadro cards having the same core count as:
    GTX 960M
    GTX 970M
    GTX 980M

    Well either the GTX 680M is 100W (720MHz) and the 870M is a 100W+ (967Mhz). Or the 680M is lower than 100W while 870M is 100W.
    I think it is closer to 110W (GTX 880M 1536 cores @954MHz 125W, GTX 870M 1344 cores @ 967MHz). 1344/1536 = 0.875. 125W * 0.875 = 109W

Doesnt really matter anyway. GTX 870M is soon to be dead. About bloody time. :)

Two of these 970Ms in SLI might be tempting too if I dont go 980M route :)
