I dunno, it seems like this stage the new desktop 980 is gonna be a shader heavier GK114 design. While true that the performance should be better than the 780ti, it won't be as future proof due to the weaker VRAM bandwidth and ROP cluster. I would be happy with the 780ti or exchange them for a cheap AMD 290 while waiting for the true big Maxwell.

Where in that list can you see its 970M?

Edit: Ok, coupled with your previous post that seems true. If its really 100% legit.

I know this is all subjective speculation for now, but when new mobile GPUs launch how long does it typically take for OEMs to start using them and benchmarks to become available? I also wonder, based on previous launches, what kind of price premiums they carry / if they result in price drops for the current parts they replace.

Yep you got it. The GS60 listing didnt had 970M either, but we know "2QE" is 970M from the GS60 from the reseller ;)

Notebooks from MSI will be listed and sold in October. Rest of the OEMs should feature them on the same month. The Maxwell mobile launch itself could happen in September (this month!) :)

Price wise, I think GTX 980M just continue with the current 880M price. Same with 970M and 870M etc.

It's approximately 1 month and prices are just about cut and paste. If a flagship SLI card model is +$900 USD from the default, single-GPU midrange model on say... a Clevo SLI laptop, the new cards are going to look the same price-wise, and the old cards will probably simply disappear from builder websites. Only way to find them would be pre-built or hardware-locked models that are still in circulation, and those are usually from manufacturers similar MSI who have dozens of extremely similar machines with just changed GPUs or something in them.

256 bit mem bus is more than enough for 1080p, and will probably be fine doing 1440p as well. 3K and 4K may have issues, but -- and this is entirely a personal preference -- if I were forced to choose between 4K and 120Hz, I'd pick 120Hz any day, every time. 3/4K 120Hz panels likely won't happen until at least 2 years down the road.

I guess what I'm trying to say is that there's no point future proofing this Maxwell, because when 3/4K + 120Hz becomes widely available, Pascal will likely be the hottest thing and Maxwell will just be something of the past.

    I refuse to give up 120Hz. I rather a 120Hz 1440p screen than a 4k 60Hz, even if I have the power to drive 4k @ 60Hz. 120Hz is soooo smooth. And I bet 144Hz is even better.

I have an Asus 24" 3D monitor and I can't go back to anything lower now unless it's on a laptop. Shame not many OEMs offer 120Hz as an option for their screens.

That was actually something I wanted as a necessity for my new computer. I only considered a PC with a 120Hz screen this time because I wanted to see how it worked, and I just loved it after I used it.

Straying off topic here but can you 120-Hzers out there really drive all games at 120 fps+?

I bet you can if you turn down some of the visuals, as long as you have a strong CPU (and fast RAM - might help a bit) - definitely gonna depend on the game though.

Yes, definitely. It's quite easy with 780Ms, and even with a single 780M, if you're willing to hit settings from ultra down to "mostly ultra" or chop off anti aliasing or something, and even then it depends on the game itself; for example CS:GO at max graphics will run at 270fps on a stock 780M. Black Ops 2 I can get 90-130 fps on a stock 780M at 1080p, FXAA on, 16x CSAA, max graphics (low depth of field though), and SLI will chew though that thing like it's a joke. Most other games do the same thing. It just depends on what you're playing, more than anything else.

Eventually you'll get used to it and love it. I find it helps in fast-paced shooting games like CoD; I don't lose people as easily. You would think 8ms difference in a new frame is nothing, but when people "vanish" at point blank range and then they're at your side or something? At 120Hz/144Hz you can see them move and follow them better.

Maybe not 120+ FPS, but If I turn off AA completely I can easily shoot past 100+ FPS in most games barring Crysis 3 as well as certain Ubisoft titles. For reference Crysis 3 on Ultra + 2x MSAA runs about 50-60 FPS, and Far Cry 3 with the same settings averages 80-90 FPS.

I actually played Watch Dogs tonight for the first time in quite awhile and I had everything maxed out with my cards set @ 836MHz and amazingly it didn't dip below 30 the whole time and averaged 76. That wasn't the case before where I had to take textures off ultra even with my cards at 954MHz because of the slowdowns.

Still doesn't hold a candle to Bioshock Infinite though. I have to use adaptive vsync on that game because it is well over 120 FPS completely maxed out.

It really does depend on the game but even with it running at 60 FPS, it still seems much smoother than a 60hz display.

Yep, I can also confirm this since overclocking my LCD to 103 Hz. Even games running at 45-60 FPS are much smoother at 103 Hz than they are at 60 Hz.

I was OCing my screen to 87hz and enjoying things. Today my screen says "no" and 82 is all it's going to give me. Even at 75hz its a perceivable difference. I wish I had a 120hz screen.

I'd go for 120 since I have a IPS external already and its doesn't make me go 'ga-ga'. Or how about give me both?
Honestly 60hz is good enough. I know once I get use to 120hz silky smooth butter I won't ever want to go back. I wonder if we'll start see Gsync or Adaptive sync in some of the newer laptop revisions?

Both 120Hz and IPS would be super great, but there are just way too slow adaption here in the mobile world. So I guess we will have to wait quite a while for that to happen :/'

But dont you see the 120Hz effect mostly during gaming? IPS with great colours apply for all scenarios? Not an easy choice I think if you have to pick 1 of them.
I have still yet to play with a 120Hz display, but I heard from many people, like you they say it is very nice to use over 60Hz. So I dont know.

NVIDIA Second Generation Maxwell Announcement (GM204) — September 9-10th
NVIDIA GeForce GTX 980 and GTX 970 NDA lift date — September 19th

Since 900M series will be sold in October, we are hoping they will present them on September 9th-10th as well. It really doesnt matter that much since GM204 is GM204 no matter if its on a mobile card or desktop. We will get that chip on GTX 970M/980M. But it would be nice if they show us some mobile charts etc and what they are capable of

It's not as hard a choice if you're mainly a gamer I think. IPS is great colour representation and stuff all over, but there are some great TN panels out there (though I doubt us laptop users see half of them >_>) and if you're a primary gamer, 120Hz will far outstrip vibrant colours. It DOES make a difference in twitch shooters, I can confirm that (though you need to be of a level of skill where you can utilize it for it to really improve your game).

As an owner of a desktop IPS monitor, IPS hands down for me, you obtain better quality in all things that you do and it is "free", by free i mean that for taking advantage of 120Hz you have to have a GPU capable of rendering more that 60 fps in the games, which means you are going to expend even more money, and is something that only makes a difference on games

Why don't you try overclocking your IPS monitor? High refresh rate means less tearing in games with V-Sync off and less input lag and judder with it on. Like I said before, it makes games smoother regardless of whether you can actually get 120 FPS. And it makes a big difference everywhere, not just in gaming. Just dragging windows around on the desktop and scrolling through text is a night-and-day difference. The blurring and streaking you get at 60 Hz is completely gone and and small text is razor sharp and legible even when dragging/scrolling through it at high speeds. And videos have less motion blur and judder as well.

This week is my last week at work, with my last shift on the 6th. So for me it is good timing too. Roll on the 9th! I want to see the fruits of my labour and what all the moolah I've been collecting over the last few months will allow me to purchase.

For me the wait has become more than just for Maxwell, but for the chance to try out a new brand of notebook. I've become bored of Clevo. I am looking forward to having something with a more premium feel to it.

Cloud's secondary title is HYPEMASTER of NBR. I remember him being excited about the 680Ms AND about the 780Ms, scouring the internet to find out it'd be a souped-up 680MX instead of a simple rebrand. Not too sure about him being a cutting-edge guinea pig though XD

Hmm... I predict that Cloud will buy an MSI machine with 970M before January.

    *puts tarot cards away* ;)

Either way, I'm not going to guinea pig again. I am gonna wait... My 880s @ 849MHz are plenty capable and run cool and quiet which is enough for now. To my surprise it even ran my problem game, Watch Dogs, pretty much maxed out last night with no stupid slowdowns and GPU max temps of 78C with low fans. I think I'll live while they work out early adopter issues.

Every bigshot needs a good hype man, I'm sure Jen-Hsun would agree.

Cutting edge guinea pig sounds like animal abuse...
