My memory only does +250 MHz.

On the other hand, my core easily does +360 MHz 24/7. Or +500 MHz with more voltage, if only I could cool it...

Glad to see at least 980M and 970M are compatible with current clevo SLI system
however, maybe bios mod is needed :/

And I've got +524Mhz on the core and +450Mhz (or +900 or +1800 depending on how you determine it!) on the VRAM, but mine isn't really comparable because NVidia just ran the 670MX at really low clocks!

Now that fairly legit-looking benchmarks have leaked I'm still unsure whether the extra bulk of the Alienware 18 is worth the SLI performance or whether I should just go with MSI or Asus in single 980M. It looks considerably bigger and heavier than my Clevo which already takes up considerable space in my suitcase when travelling. I'm so torn.

Agreed, at least aesthetically, the G751 looks fresh, modern, whereas the 771 looks run any other uninspired generic 17 inch laptop.
I'm really not sure whether to go 15 or 17 inch when I finally do buy a laptop. Is 15 inch gaming a decent experience? The only thing I'm sure about at the moment is that a 980m is a must.

If you travel periodically I'd say to ditch the SLI. I see SLI 980m primarily for external hookups with multiple monitors because SLI 980m at 1080p is purely overkill.

Asus make some pretty kick-*ss laptops with good cooling on the larger ones, they also offer up some of the most reliable & highest benchmark numbers I've seen in stock configurations when reviewed on notebookcheck - whereas recently with Alienware they haven't faired as well (e.g. 780M/880M). Also, if you get a single GPU notebook it'll be cheaper and you can say to yourself you'll upgrade to the next one sooner, and it will fit in your bag, and the 980M is a kick-*ss GPU too on it's own anyway! Is it a big enough leap over your 780M for you though?? (which maybe you've flashed a modified vBIOS to & overclocked to good effect?). Me personally I'd never upgrade my GPU's or laptop unless I was getting at least double GPU performance.

And... still rocks the house for gaming. It doesn't suddenly become something to throw away simply because new/faster stuff is out soon(ish). To me that is the point of going SLI in the first place. Better longevity.

I have an 880M and have no plans to upgrade to a 980M because quite frankly, it would be foolish of me to spend money on that when my 880M runs the games I play exceedingly well.

When you find something that your current system cannot handle to your satisfaction then look at your options.

If you aren't satisfied with your benchmark scores then be prepared to spend some money.

Lots of people are very happy with the 860M and 870M SLI is well over twice as fast. I think you are in a good situation with you current setup. :D

I travel home about every month or two, which doesn't sound like much but it's often enough for ease of portability to matter to me. Also I'd like to sell both of my current laptops and just solely rely on the new one for everything, so a comparatively smaller MSI/Asus would be a better match for the uni's library than the Alienware 18! The SLI performance numbers make me salivate but the more I think about it, the more I gravitate towards a single 980M. It'd also allow me to set aside some moolah for the inevitable future upgrades and added SSD storage.

I have indeed got the modded VBIOS, which can run quite heavily overclocked, except a bit hot for my liking! It's not just the GPU performance increase I'm looking forward to this time around though. I'd also really like a better all-round laptop in terms of display, speakers, aesthetic design etc. I'll be more than happy with ultra settings at 1080p with 60fps with 2015 games such as The Witcher 3. Though if there's a higher-res option display, I'll no doubt shoot for that (my Nexus 5 display has spoilt me with it's sexy PPI density). My current favourite is the MSI GT72 for it's (supposedly) superb speakers, IPS display and not-too-gaudy looks.

I couldn't help but notice the gigabyte p35 v3 in the list...

Given my requirements outside of gaming... I think this may be my next laptop, if it is like the p35g/w v2 with an updated GPU. I only passed on the p35g v2 because the 860m was the Kepler variant. So very glad I waited now, based on the info in this thread :).

Mmmmmm...flexible storage options in a thin/light PC for a multiboot/multi os lab machine with some decent gaming chops and a 1080p display.... *wipes drool from mouth*

Holy mother. Just when I thought I'd decided with the ASUS GM551 I convinced myself with the Acer Aspire V Nitro. The next day and you pick up on this. I'm definitely going to wait a few more weeks and see if anything materializes with this. I considered the V2 as well but I'm just hoping the 970M is a lot more power efficient than the 870M as the P35w V2 has big cooling issues as it stands and a more powerful GPU could complicate it's issues further.

Hopefully when the cards are released Gigabyte will announce the refresh shortly after. Also hoping there isn't a huge price spike too as the V2 is already £1200 :/

Well, that or the ASUS G751 when it's released. If it includes the new GPU then I might be sold on that due to the likely better cooling and fan noise.

    GTX 780 SLI:

If 980M SLI is scoring almost 14000 (at stock), this means that 980M SLI will perform almost like 780 SLI. Obviously, benchmarks are different than "real-world performance" seen in games (FPS). So, this doesn't necessarily mean we will see 780 SLI FPS from 980M SLI. I am only comparing numbers given to me. I checked 3DMark Hall of Fame for 780 scores and I'm comparing them to the scores provided above.

Am I doing something wrong in this comparison? It seems too good to be true. Another conclusion you can draw from this, is that those of us who predicted 780/780Ti performance level with the 980M were right.

I'm waiting to preorder the 15". As a uni student i prefer the 15". Normally, i would stuck with the choice between 15/17 but the design comparison really punch the answer in my face. Hopefully mid October is the time i touch my first looooong waited laptop.

I think the 970M SLI is used in a different laptop, not the P35W v3. It's the Clevo P375SM as shown on the table. I would have been shocked if they'd attempted a next gen GPU SLI setup in a model which already struggled with a single previous gen GPU haha. But yes, I'm hoping that they will all be more powerful AND significantly more power efficient, seeing as they will be the Maxwell variants.

I too will always maintain the stance that a single more powerful GPU > A weaker GPU in SLI.

Still, only time will tell I guess, the waiting game goes on a bit longer...

I don't see how having to shell out another 900+ dollars to fix something nVidia should have fixed is "lucky" but yeah, the dead machine thing would definitely suck more. Sorry man.

Maybe I'll just sell the laptop and go to using my desktop and consoles. I've been playing Destiny non-stop which is crazy for me.

Spoiled most of the post for brevity.
Think it sounds sort of like the same boat I am in. My thought right now is that 15" at WQHD or maybe even 3K at over 60hz and a 980m is probably best. 15" does give you a smaller screen but its not too tiny like the 14" blade or something either. 17"+ would be great if they had a WQHD, 3K, or maybe even 4k option with a 980m SLI that could power it. At 1080p the pixel density is only passable though which offsets the screen size.

So I am pretty much waiting the next 3-4 weeks to see what displays get offered.

Well 980m SLI may very well be as powerful as 780 SLI, however it won't reach the high overclocking numbers some of those machines put up in that hall of fame. You just can't fit the cooling systems you would need in a laptop. Still going to be pretty awesome though.

I don't think the GPU score is undermined by the comparitively low CPU score of 6440 - I get the same CPU score with my system, and CPU usage during the GPU measurement sections is really low on my system, so it won't affect the GPU score by any significant amount.

You know.. One easy way to make this convincing would be to find any reference point between the comparisons in any way at all. Same watt-use on each of the cards to find improvement per watt. Same number of smx units and similar clock-speeds to see any architecture improvements. Things like that.

Kudos to folks for posting a benchmark that - while probably is something overclocked until you can smell bakelite (and that probably croaks the power-supply) - actually seems halfway legitimate, though.

Ah, you are a cautious one, I remember a similarly toned post from you a few pages back! There's been loads of benchmark results that have been discovered at all sorts of clocks, some at stock clocks too, so there's not much mystery to it. We already have knowledge of Maxwell performance efficiency in terms of watts from 860M, so it's fair to extrapolate that these cards won't run any hotter than their Kepler counterparts (and cooler for some of them, e.g. when comparing 880M!). (The extrapolations have already been presented in this thread, mainly by cloudfire).

LOADS of benchmarks. Vanfanel did a great job hunting them down.
I think 9 different notebooks featuring GTX 970M and GTX 980M have been found.

I want to see some 3DMark11 benchmarks as well though. Preferably Extreme preset. Maybe some temperature measurements along with it. That would rock.

My reasoning was that if that 4700HQ was under-performing for some reason, possibly thermal/power throttling, then the GPU might not have been able to run at full capacity either. If I had somehow led someone to believe that the CPU score has a strong bearing on the GPU score I should apologize and reinforce the good words of Cloud and Robbo: it's the GPU score that counts (assuming no throttling).

Ok I double checked to find out since sponge_gto was sceptical.

He was right. The benchmark with GS70 and 4700HQ and GTX 870M was indeed suffering from CPU throttling which indeed dragged the GPU score for 870M down.

    1. The review of GS70 model shows that the 4700HQ reach 98C on Prime95. So it have poor cooling.
    MSI GS70-2PEi71611 Notebook Review - NotebookCheck.net Reviews

    2. The GTX 870M scores in average 4600 in 3DMark Firestrike, not 4150 like the comparison between the two GS models show.

So that means the GTX 970M scores roughly 62% more than GTX 870M, not +80% like the comparison shows.
The good part is that the CPU score for GS70 with GTX 970M and 4710HQ is much higher than GS70 with GTX 870M and 4700HQ. So that means the upcoming GS70 have either better cooling, or the GTX 970M outputs much less heat than GTX 870M so it doesnt overheat the CPU.

Which I`m pretty sure is the case. Well spotted sponge_gto :)

I'm going to be getting so impatient closer and closer to release. Kind of glad and pleased with myself for not jumping in with a laptop the last 2 months, looks like my patience will pay off. Desperate for the first wave of manufacturers to bring our their refreshed laptops/notebooks.

Any idea when the first batch of notebooks the the 9XXM GPUs might be released by (estimate)? I know the launch is the 18th or 19th of September but was just wondering how much longer afterwards until they're available.

I've not seen anything for them so far. Seeing as the 860M + 850M are already the Maxwell variants it's looking like Nvidia might release the new Maxwell 970/980(m) GPUs next week, but then release the rebrands of the 860/850M at some point in the future.

In all fairness, the 970/980M models is where the main interest is and will be.

GTX 960M will launch later than GTX 980M/970M. Late October/early November availability is my guess. It will not be a 860M rebrand

Is it possible they will be in 20nm?

As far as we can see, they will launch 28nm. As for if 20nm maxwell will be a thing... who knows? Maybe they'll simply skip to 16nm for Pascal in about 2 years.

gpu can never overheat the cpu for gs70, the fans are separated so each gets its own 2 heatpipes + 1 fan. therefore how hot the gpu is can never affect cpu

It does affect it , the case and the air inside the case gets hot when the GPU is releasing heat. So the warmer the GPU gets , the warmer the air gets in the case and thus the heat transfer efficiency drops due to lower delta-temp between the heat transfer pipes and the surrounding air.

How big is the jump going to be from 860m maxwell to 970m maxwell?

Seeing as the performance rumors look as though they're panning out, I'm also hoping the rumor about Maxwell being cheaper also comes true. If so, upgrading will be sweet.

@HSN: Huge bump. Like... 200%+ more powerful.

    Theoretically? More than SLI 860Ms.

    Exactly.
The heatsink gets hot, heapipes too, and the heatpipes will undoubtly release heat to the system (also the CPU). And since GS70 is so thin, there isnt much needed to make it really hot inside.
GTX 870M is stretching it bigtime in a thin notebook like GS70. Its hotter than GTX 680M which you found on thick gaming notebooks earlier.

    200%? how in the world
    such jump never happened kinda

GS70/GS60 problems too is the the cpu only has access to 1 fan, the second fan+its heatpipes never touches the CPU, bad design imo (for these thin laptops), for normal use with multitasking/video editing etc stuff that don't use the gpu much the laptop gets hot/loud because the second fan is pretty much useless at these situations

Do you think P34gv2 will get 970m and possible release date? might switch from p34gv2 to GS60 just for the sake of 200%+ performance if it was really that crazy moving from 860m to 970m, this is nearly Desktop level of desktop GTX 770 in a super thin laptop
