GS60/70 are practically ovens, notebook check measured temps on the bottom of the case hot enough to leave burns, and the CPU and GPU both were throttling from temperature. Plus since the CPU can overheat the laptop while the GPU is not even being used just having a better GPU won't solve the problem.
They may or may not have fixed the cooling system, but I would wait for reviews before buying one unless you are planning to fix the heat issue yourself (cooling pad, repaste, undervolt, etc...). All the ultrathin gaming laptops have heat problems still, the MSI ones are by far the worst offenders though. Personally I don't think the cooling tech is quite there yet for under 1 inch thick, maybe when 20nm or 14nm or such arrives.
-
Well we found out that the new GS70 with GTX 970M had much higher CPU score in 3DMark Firestrike, plus the GTX 970M had correct GPU score. With GS70 and 870M it had poor CPU score and the GPU score was down 15% from what it should be.
So it looks like it got to do with the new Maxwell GPU being much cooler or they have made the cooling system better. Maybe a combination although I think it mostly got to do with the GPU.
But yeah, I agree with you. GS series are not ideal regarding cooling.
GT72 and GS70 for example are two entirely different worlds for sure. -
True so the GPU isn't throttling, and the CPU is throttling less. However we don't yet know if the case is no longer hitting 60-70+ degrees Celsius. Yeah checked it again bottom of MSI GS60 had a max temp under load of 78 degrees Celsius (173 Fahrenheit) when notebook check measured it.
-
The MSI is basically cooling a quad core i7 with a single super thin ultrabook sized fan, they rely on throttling the cpu to get away with it.
Gigabyte laptops for example is making advantage of the fact the maxwell gpu doesn't run that hot and linked the second fan to the cpu too, using that setup the cpu never throttle and the gpu stays at high 60/low 70
For me though if GPU performance was worth it i'm willing to sacrifice the heat/noise
The upcoming GS60 with 970m will still throttle/overheat/noisy duo this flawD2 Ultima likes this. -
Here is a quick photo i made showing how flawed MSI cooling is, you can't cool a beast i7 quad at full load without throttle with a single small fan, all other popular laptops are using the 2xfans method expect msi, their cpu does not touch the secondary fan so during browsing/multitasking/video editing/anything that doesn't require gpu power or if you have a cool running gpu the second fan as if doesn't exist and you are using a single fan laptop (a single thin/slim fan)
Stupid design imo your lap will burn lolAttached Files:

AMD to release R9 390X to fight GeForce GTX 980 ?
-
soo true!
edit: people got the idea in their head that seperate heatpipes is better probably because those laptops that have it had monster coolers and of corse got better temperatures.
you got the best of both worlds by having it connected, neither one is going to be too hot or unnecessary cool, they will cooperate to keep the temperature similar and the exhaust system as optimized as possibleRobbo99999 likes this. -
I am really hoping the 980M is cheaper than the 880M, as rumors suggested a while ago about Maxwell being cheaper in general. Between upgrading and selling my current 780M, I will likely have spent less than $500 for double the performance. That's definitely worth it.
Please rumors, be true! -
GTX 980 cheaper than GTX 780 Ti, yes probably. 980 is looking to be around 400mm2, 780 Ti is 560mm2.
GTX 880M however is only 295mm2, GTX 980M is around 400mm2.
Its bigger, faster and much more energy efficient.
Not exactly the recipe for cheaper. but one could always hope...Robbo99999 likes this. -
Well, it won't be more money. Technology is always going to get better, that doesn't mean prices will always get higher. It will either be the same or less to keep it marketable. I'm hoping for less, but expecting it to be the same. Either way, $500-$700 for double the performance? Yes, I'm in.
I'm betting you're pretty excited as well. 770M SLI to 970M SLI will be huge. -
Should be around same price as 880M from resellers, maybe slightly more. The 880M is selling for $800 now on ebay. Perhaps the sellers there will take advantage and price 980M a little more though in the first months.
-
So excited about this new chips. I have a GTX 770M in my Dell M6700 atm and it runs great.
What kind of perfomance could I expect going from a 770M to a 970M?
Has there been any leaked games benchs yet?
Is TDP on the 970M 75W and 980M 100W not 120W like the 780M? -
I'm just looking for an 870m stock performance in the same TDP as my 860m so I can have it in my 13" notebook.

Okay, I just realized I wasn't taking into account a few different variables. One, their were Fire Strike Extreme Scores mixed in which caused a number of discrepancies. Two, I was also incorrectly counting the number of video card's. So I parsed my results again. I'll just post up the graphs. If someone wants the full list again I'll repost the correct version of all benchmarks.

I'm glad I decided to buy a laptop again around this time. I currently just have my desktop rig.
I was considering either the Alienware 14, P34G V2, or P35W V2. Now I will wait for one of those to be upgraded to the 970M. Unless something else that is thin and light gets released with it. Color me excited! -
Im going to uni on the 28th and I was going to buy the Gigabyte p35W V2 not sure if I should wait now, the longest I can leave it to is Christmas should I wait or not
-
For me it's going to be the new 17" Asus ROG or Alienware. 14" AW would be fine as well, but I doubt Dell will equip it with a 970m. They'll probably wait for the 960m (965m?).

Asus G771 with 980M, MSI GT72 with 980M or Alienware 18 with GTX 970M SLI for me I think

Maybe, just maybe, I`ll go the 980M SLI with voltage reduction to see if that helps with heat. -
For those who wonder, Hermitage Akihabara, a reliable Japanese hardware site, confirmed today that GTX 960 will arrive in late October.
So I think we should see a mobile card based on that one in October/November.
That could be interesting for you GTX 860M owners.

Knock about $100 off that and I think you'll find that closer to a RRP in an US store. There seems to be a slight premium (its called getting bent over) on GPU's in Japan in recent times.

I doubt it will be sold at that price. That's probably MSRP. I'm sure Amazon and Newegg will sell it for less to be competitive. It will probably be the same price as the 780Ti.

980 will be 549$

So you guys doubt Alienware will give the 14 a 970m? I love the size, looks, and supposedly good build quality of it. And yes I'm a sucker for bright flashy lights, lol.
I suppose I could settle for the 960M. Either way, I just hope these refreshes don't take till January or something. Getting mighty bored of Netflix on the work desktops (still running XP). -
Very unlikely companies will wait till January for updates to the new cards. Most MSI and Asus seem like they will update sometime in late September. Clevo will likely be Sept-Oct mostly dependent on the OEM making them. The rest I think are less certain, but assuming they are just doing a refresh with the new cards I would expect most to be out by mid November at the latest, they will want to get in on the Christmas shopping season.
-
Good point. Christmas is when all the awesome deals happen too, lol!

I still think the gap between GTX 970 and GTX 960 will be bigger than just 1SMM.
MSI GTX 980 is listed at 640 euros, and GTX 970 is listed at 430 euros in Netherland.
