Yup, and its a very good sign.

If this notebook can carry the GTX 980M, it may very well run cool

Yeah, damn Nvidia. Give us back the hot chips. The performance chips belong to us who have real gamer laptops. Big, heavy and just screams when it cools of the chips :p

Ah damn, after waiting and waiting finally I'm all set to buy a gigabyte p34g v2 and then this is on the horizon...

Need advice - 860m now or 960/970m in a laptop like the p34g v2... sometime before the end of this year?

Would be a huge inconvenience for me having to wait for 2-3 months, but if the performance difference is so significant then I guess it's sensible to wait?

Xtreme scores reflect the improvement in architecture regarding memory bandwidth. Both 980m and 880m have the same.

970M will be the first to come out. 960M could be November-ish.
    GTX 860M scores P4920 in 3DMark11 720p benchmark, GTX 970M P9556. 860M scores X1600 in 3DMark11 1080p benchmark and 970M scores X2955

You be the judge if almost 2x the performance is worth it. I personally would 100% wait. :)

Nah, I'm just annoyed that Razer is now going to tout that its laptop is going to be even MORE of "the only true gaming laptop on the planet"... and charge about $4000 for it XD.

I really have a dislike for Razer products after I saw how little their warranties last for and how they redesign their products to be less-consumer-friendly to fix/clean/etc while costing less than their original design models, compared to how much money they charge for it. And a lot of non-knowledge-able people have been touting the Razer Blade as far more than it really is, and more and more high-end laptop users are misunderstood by the general public (and most desktop-only gamers).

    Good find Cloudfire!
So it looks like a stock 980m matches a heavily OCed 780m/880m(not throttler).
    Nice.

There are a few people in the Alienware benchamrk thread who have done p11, 000 on a 780m and Johnksss with a 880m (qs, I think).
Extreme scores you might be right though there are less frequently benched in 3dMark11.

The combined score takes much more of a leap than the graphics score, even though the CPU is at LEAST 700MHz slower. I think actual in-game performance will spike like crazy; usually heavy CPU overclocks can match up GPU discrepancies... but that does not seem to be the case here O_O

Graphic score on GTX 980M is still about 10% above the highest 880M performance preset overclock run you can find on 3DMark too. You can also see that the 980M get more than +10% FPS in the individual tests :)
    Result

I think with a notebook with a decent CPU, the 980M graphic score will increase too. Who knows, maybe the CPU and the thin notebook drags the GPU down a little bit?
Maybe the GPU power above 880M overcompensate for the CPU? I have no idea how these scores are calculated

Time is the thing - I would likely then be waiting for a "p34g v3" (or similar 13/14" thin and light) with 960/970m, but by the time something like that is actually available in a store, in the right country/region - often there's a delay so 2 months could turn into 4 months and I would likely not see a suitable laptop till early next year, in which case I'd rather get what's available and I can use right now.

But that performance difference on paper looks too good to be true - nearly double performance can't be ignored, although part of me wonders if as usual these things are hyped up more than they turn out to be - so eventually the performance step up from an 860 to a 960 might be much less than what we speculate now.

I suppose I could wait till the 18th and we get more concrete news of these gpus before making a decision.

So, according to that benchmark, the 980M is pretty much 30%+ better than the 780M at stock, which is incredible. And I know that score will increase with proper driver support. Imagine what it can be when overclocked... Hot damn, we're looking at 50%+ when overclocked! :D

Check the scores again and pay attention to the GPU score.

GTX 980M is atleast 50%+ faster than 780M. Could increase more once faster CPUs are tested with the GPU :D

I was comparing the P score, but yes, you're right. More than 50% at stock. ;)

    My 780M / 4930MX bundle gets P7837~ at stock. 11033 / 7837 = 30%~.

Well, now that the new Maxwell chips are right around the corner I'll just skip the Asus G551 that I've been waiting badly and choose a new laptop with a gtx 970m. Looking at these benchmarks the performance of the gtx 970m is almost 2x the gtx 860m so this should pay off the waiting. The question is what laptop with 970m should I get. A new hunt begins :)

Yeah total score is misleading. Your CPU is obviously much faster than the 4710HQ which makes the total score bigger on your part.

I'm in the exact same boat as you. However whether I get the 970M or the 980M depends on pricing and how cool these chips actually run (especially in a thinner chasis). Now I'm just desperate to see the newly refreshed laptops released as soon as possible :D

Gigabyte didn't put 880m in their thin laptops but they did with 980m seems like its not only faster but cooler card with lower tdp? that gigabyte laptop is 20mm thin and have optical drive etc, heck razerblade will probably get the upcoming 980m heh

And alienware announced the 13 coming with 860m and Dual ULV cpu at nov lol man some companies are insane RB will 980m will sell like hot cake

Problem is this is one of the biggest jumps if not the biggest, More than 2x the performance, resale value will be impacted a lot, plus newer gpus will start getting slight upgrade or just the usual rebrand for few years, 970m/980m is the perfect time to buy a laptop

980m basically a desktop GTX 780 in performance when you consider the fact 980m benchmark was using a weaker cpu...... wth
upcoming desktop 980 didn't make a huge jump over 780 unlike mobile parts

Good point on the resale value.

I take it there's not likely to be any comparable jump in mobile gpus anytime next year? If so then yes I would be sensible to wait.

My point is laptops and desktops gap is getting smaller who could have imagined a 20mm thin laptop with tiny fans can cool a 780 equivalent, previously this was never an option you needed a beast/huge/thick to cool the card and we still heard reports of throttle and was no where near desktop power
Now unless nvidia charge an arm and leg for the 980m it will be a very popular card
heck if you get 980m you are covered for the entire generation of current consoles PS4/XB and wont need to upgrade expect for PC exclusives with insane graphics

Actually, it always happened. Remember when thin/light laptops used the 560M and kept it cool? Previously you couldn't shove a 280M in those things to save your life (but the 560Ms ripped those old cards to shreds). 1st gen mobile Kepler wasn't all that strong compared to the Fermi (at stock; except 680M), but then we got 765M chips in thinner machines that beat the 580Ms... and next we got 860M chips in thinner machines that trade blows with 770Ms (maxwell v kepler). It happens all the time.

It's just now we're getting what we consider strong power in small form factors XD.

I think he talking about the desktop 780 , not the mobile card. Since the 980M is as strong as the 780 but in a thin mobile form factor

nope never happened, Cloud showed proof 980m in a 20mm laptop, a high end gpu was always in these super thick/heavy/huge fans laptops and even then plenty had heat issues/throttle/noise/etc
the p35gv2 fans are super slim and small in size too yet its cooling a x80m range such a thing never existed before
Gigabyte didn't put 880m in the very same laptop but was able to do so with the 980m no one even tried to put 780m or 880m in a thin small laptop
Heck they even have 970M sli in one of these thin laptops too coming, nvidia did a great job

Companies did rush with 870m kepler for the back to school rush and finish their stock it seems.

I get what you're saying but if the 980M is a 100W card, any <1" (25.4mm) thick laptop is going to struggle to cool it. Maxwell might be more efficient and give twice the performance per watt, but you still have to dissipate that 100W of heat somehow. Yes I saw the benchmarks but they don't tell you what temp the GPU was running at do they.

^ This, p35gv2 fans are really small/thin its a 20mm thin laptop with Optical drive+hd slot+2ssd so many inputs/outputs/subwoofer/etc 970+980m are a cool running cards which is weird knowning nvidia history can't week for next week with the full reveal, its likely to be a 75tdp card

I could only hope no one would take the 20nm "rumor" with any modicum of seriousness. I'd have to get really silly, to think of something 900M related that has less plausibility.

Yes, and the 580M was near a 560Ti back in the day, and the 280M was a 9800GTX back in the day. What I meant is, new tech dominates the old; the 980M doing as well as say... a 980Ti would have been much more impressive to me. Though I *AM* impressed if they can get a mobile flagship 28nm (that's important) in there. 20nm it won't impress me as much.

You misunderstood what I meant. I was saying, new hardware being stronger, cooler and more power efficient does not surprise me or impress me THAT much. For example: My D900F and the M980NU (I think) type clevo machines were much thicker and larger to be able to use/cool something like the GTX 280M or 280M SLI... but then fermi came along, and as hot as it was, it was cooler/stronger. The same thing happened to Kepler; the 680M was basically an overvolted, underclocked chip. It was cool as all hell, my P370SM3 with my 780Ms still sits far cooler than my D900F ever did while being thinner than that machine.

I'm saying that shoving a GTX 780 in a smaller form factor due to new architecture isn't as impressive as if it was say.. a 980Ti in that form factor (as I consider impressive being within-architecture)

How is it at all plausible, that Nvidia wouldn't first release 20nm Maxwell in the ultra competitive desktop market? Seriously tell me why they'd put it in laptops first.

And that's without pointing out that the performance numbers we have don't even match up with an architectural shift + a shrink in process. If 20nm Maxwell was only 36% faster than the 880M in Firestrike, it'd be a laughable failure.

There's holding out hope, then there's clinging to fairy tales.

Maxwell architecture (28nm) alone should be able to pull of this stunt based on previous iterations. I would expect a lot more performance if it had been on 20nm fab. Even if NVD decided they will keep the same TDP (800m), performance increase should be in the range of 90-100% min.

Also leaks so far indicate 28nm for the mobile series. I will be really happy if the 20nm rumor comes true because that's what I am truly waiting and rooting for. At the same time this is not the performance I believe 20nm should be able to achieve (If it is NVD is wasting a lot of 20nm capability OR NVD's new strategy is to bring low power high performance cards for thin laptops).

    EDIT:

Nailed it right on the head.

Last time we got arch change + die shrink in one go (580M --> 680M), performance increase was 80+%.

Lol they did state that maxwell was suppose to put laptops before desktops, it still is plausible its not like I'm saying it will be 5 NM lol

Again they don't have to max out the maxwell architecture at 20 NM for smaller laptops , they could just keep the same core count and clock speed so people will still buy 28 NM gtx 980M. Lol yes and I think there could be two nodes on mobile 20 NM and 28 NM. But who knows this is all speculation and the bench we are seeing are leaks not the official releases.

I like to think that nothing is impossible, maybe improbable. as an engineer , for me it is important to keep an open mind.
