I just got a DV7-4070us. it came with a small crack in the screen so was thinking of just sending it back and getting an ENVY 17. Could th DV7 run Civilization 5 on good settings. Here are the specs:

    Intel® Core™ i5-450M processor 2.40GHz with Turbo Boost Technology up to 2.66GHz

    4GB DDR3

640GB (5400RPM) SATA with HP ProtectSmart Hard Drive Protection

ATI Mobility Radeon™ HD 5650 switchable graphics with 1024MB DDR3 with up to 2714MB total graphics memory

Overclocking isn't dangerous, as long as you do it intelligently and carefully. There are a few reasons why some cards run at a "stock" speed lower than the spec from ATI (or NVIDIA). The main ones are temperature and stability. If the notebook design cannot cool or power the cards adequately, sometimes manufacturers lower the clock speed.

Either way, look up some guides on overclocking online. There used to be a good one here but it's pretty outdated. The general procedure is to increase clock speeds by small amounts at a time (10-20 MHz) and then test thoroughly for stability. If you need/want help on this, create a new thread in the gaming forum. Maybe somebody knows of a good thread/article that has slipped my mind.

I have to say I'm kinda of new to this, but have schooled myself quite a bit in the past 4 months since I purchased a Samsung R580 with a i5 and 310m.
I have overclocked the gpu and cpu and have tried to emulate Mac OS on my machine with no luck (good link please). With just the gpu overclocked I can run Mass Effect 2 on High at 1366x768 and most every game I try I am quite impressed with. Also can run BioShock to at native with everything on high. Just downloaded Arkym Asylum and can run it at 1280x720 with everything on high and it performs pretty good. There is nothing I have tried {besides GTA VI :(} that I wasn't satisfied with. This card is way more than just HD capable, but if this is a ty card I cant wait to build my own desktop and get a blazing fast gpu!!!!!!!!!

Well Civ 5 minimum for GPU says:

" 256 MB ATI HD2600 XT or better, 256 MB nVidia 7900 GS or better, or Core i3 or better integrated graphics"

So if it supports integrated graphics then 310m is worlds above that.

    Also read here:

    http://www.civilization-5.net/civ5/news/item/16-scalable-system-requirements

"This model also allows Civ 5 to run on integrated graphics including most modern notebooks and computers that do not have an independent graphics card, at an acceptable framerate. The game has been extensively tested and tweaked for these lower end systems, so it should run out of the box."

Hi new here :) i just brought a cheap laptop from ebay and was wondering if it will be able to handle a few games and at what settings?.

    The Spec:

    Fujitsu Amilo PI 2540

    Windows 7
    Intel Core 2 Duo T7250 2.00GHz, 800MHz, 2MB L2 Cache
    3GB of RAM
    320GB Hard Drive
    ATI Mobility Radeon 2400.

    The Games:

    The Elder Scrolls Oblivion.

    Dragon Age Origins.

    Mass Effect 2.

    Halo 1/2.

Also do you think i will stand any chance of running diablo 3 when it eventually gets released?.

    Cheers in advance.

its allright to do that.. its been downclocked by sony... to lower temps but if its overclocked and temps are allright, it shouldn't be a problem.

it should do ok but an envy 17 will be way way better.

should do halo 1 and 2.. doubt it has any chance of running the other games.

I don't know what the system spec for diablo 3 is, but if it is similar to sc2, then I don't think this will run it well. Halo 1/2 will run, but mass effect 2, dragon age, and oblivion are gpu demanding games, and ati 2400 isn't that powerful.

Hmm, I don't know too much about computers but I just ordered a Dell Studio 14 with i3 core, 4gb ram. I didn't know it at the time I was ordering that the Intel HD was integrated (again I'm not very knowledgeable about these things). I also didn't want to pay the extra $75 to upgrade to a 512mb ATI Mobility Radeon 540v or $160 for a 1 gb one since I would only play 1 or 2 games on it. The main one that I'm concerned about is Guild Wars 2 which I know is going to be graphics intensive with all their textures and what not. Even though I would like the good eye candy, can the Intel HD handle it? I don't mind if it's low quality. I just want to know if it can run it. Also can it be switched out even though it's integrated? I talked to a representative on Dell chat and one said that it can't be changed and another said I could order the graphics card and with technical support install it myself. T__T

I don't think they have released the system spec for GW2, but from the video I saw, I really doubt integrated intel HD can handle the game. You MIGHT be able to run it at 600x400 (or lowest resolution) on lowest settings. Who knows?

You really need to reorder with a real gfx card. The Intel integrated chip will be able to play nothing recent. Forget about Guild Wars 2.

You can not change the GPU later. It's called integrated for a reason.

Can my laptop run Crysis, Bioshock, FSX, C&C3, COD: MW2, and GTA4? I'm content with 30 fps for each, at medium settings.

    CPU: Intel Core i5-450m (2.4GHz-2.66GHz)
    GPU: NVIDIA GT 330m, 1GB DDR3 VRAM
    RAM: 4GB DDR3 @ 1066MHz
Display: 1920x1080, but I'd only need to play at 720p or 900p (external HDTV will likely be the main display for games, to emulate a console experience, and 900p if I play on the laptop's display)

Answer is yes if you play at 720p, most likely high settings. Medium-high at 900p.

OK thanks. So you think that with lower res and low setting it should run pretty decently? Like 50+ fps?

u'd want a ATI 5650 for such stuff.. it would be way better at 720p or 900p..

i really doubt so.. u'd need to be at very low details and res and get fps like that..

Generally, you only need 30+ FPS for a game to be considered fluent. 50+ is asking a bit too much, especially for something like B:BC2.

Yeah maybe 50+ is too wishful and demanding. Was just hoping that someone with similar specs would've 1st hand experience on how it would run.

Hi Guys, im looking for a new notebook...

Can this one play games such as Fallout 3, Mass Effect 2, Assasin Creed 2 and other new upcoming games such as Dead Space 2, Fifa 11, Singularity, Mafia 2, Fable III, Diablo III??

    The spec is :

    i3-350
    ATI HD 5470 512MB
    RAM 2GB

Well i dont need to run on high detail or perfect...just as long it playing smooth and not lagging should be ok for me already...

or do you think its worth upgrading to other notebook with the same spec except for the VGA card to ATI HD 5650 1Giga? Well, it gonna cost me around $117 though to upgrade it

    Thanks

The $117 would be well worth spending. The 5650 would at at least an extra year of comfortable gaming to the life of your notebook.

    It's the difference between lo-medium, and medium-high.

Since you're already planning for tomorrow's releases, there's no point in buying the GPU which is playing on low settings today. Think about Mass Effect 3, which is coming in 2012; the 5470 might not survive that long.

i have to add another $248 for the vga card...do you think its worth?? thanks...

anyway, 5470 can only manage to play low resolution on today games yea?

Hi guys, I know I can run it but what settings do you guys recommend ?

    The spec is:
    CPU: i7-720QM
    GPU: ATI 5870RM
    RAM: 2GB
    Display: 1080

EXTRA INFO: Currently running it on DX10, V-High, Gamme 50%, AAA, 4AF, res 1050.
Not as smooth as I would like but could possibly be the game play ? and sorry for the res in advance im awful with the numbers.

so i probably should go with the 5650 yea to play all the games?

    anyway, one more question

which one run more better and which one is a lot worth?

    Lenovo Y460
    i3-350, ATI HD 5650 1G, 2 GB Ram, WXGA LED 14", $858

    Samsung R480
    i5-430, GT 330M 1G, 4GB Ram, WXGA LED 14", $889

or there's a local product called Forsa

    the spec is i7-820qm, GT 335M, 4GB Ram, 15", just for $944

but well, its a local brand, and im not so sure....ahahaha....

so can GT 330M play as much better as 5650?

So will the 5650 be able to handle future games like The Witcher 2, Diablo III, Mass Effect 3, maybe Crysis 2, and the annual COD games for 2-3 years? When do you think it will start having to play games on low settings? This is with an i5-450m or 520m or something similar, 4 GB RAM, and 1366x768 resolution, by the way. How much better would a 5730 be?

BC2 u mean? It should run on DX11 at full HD res but with lower details...
i'd get the lenovo but try looking for the Y460d model with core i5 and ATI 5730.. it should be about $900 and should be the best... the GT330M won't even come close to the 5650...

the 5730 is a OCed 5650 and much better.. i would get it.

Thanks, I understand that it's better but the rest of the computer might not be, and I can't only focus on gaming, since I also need portability, for example (or else I'd get an actual gaming computer). I'd like to get it if I can, though. But how will the 5650 hold up in the future?

I found a Sony Vaio E Series VPCEB2UFX/BI with the following:
    Intel Core i5 430M(2.26GHz)
    4 GB Memory DDR3 1066
    ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5650

Does anyone have any experience with Sony's? Do they come recommended? TF2 (primary game I'm trying to play) shouldn't have any issues on this as far as I know. I'm hoping it would be decent enough for D3 when it finally is released.

Hey I'm new here so if someone doesn't mind can they tell me if I'm doing something wrong  Thanks

Okay to the point- I am thinking of getting Battle Field: Bad Company 2 but I don't think it will run well on high or maybe medium quality.
I went to "CanYouRunIt" and it past minimum and in recommendations it said my video card isn't recommended (Nvidia Geforce GT 330m) :( but I saw someone on Youtube play it very well using same card. :D

    Can someone tell me if this game will work on- Windows 7 (64-bit), Toshiba Satellite P500, Intel(R) Core(TM) i5 CPU M 520 @ 2.40GHz-3.15GHz Boosted, Nvidia GeForce GT 330m, 4GB DDR3 RAM (Hopefully getting 8GB soon) ;)

    THANKS!!!

it should as long as u have a acer or gateway one as they have higher core clocks compared to sony allowing more OCing also... in the future..

It should be ok except for the core is underclocked so u need to OC.. look for an acer or gateway with a 5650.. they have higher core clocks and better gaming power overall.

in any case.. no.. the graphics card is crap.. epic crap..

it should do.. both games on med-high at 1366X768...

Hey, I was wondering what would be the best laptop to run FSX and Arma 2 (armed assault 2)? If you are wondering why, budget is $700 usd and it must be a laptop. I'm not aiming for overkill and get 70fps, just something that i can survive in for the next few years til i make money

    Option #1

None of the above. You can do better for $700.

None of the machines you listed will last even a year, and have zero chance at running ARMA 2 at a decent clip.

This is $720, and is really the best you'll do in this price range.

Found another computer with an AMD, should I stick with looking for Intel Core series, or the AMD's good for gaming?

2.0 GHz AMD Phenom II Quad-Core N930 processor with 2 MB L2 cache and 3600 MHz system bus
500 GB SATA hard drive (5400 RPM)
4 GB of installed DDR3 RAM (1066 MHz; expandable to 8 GB)
ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5650 graphics

Good to know. Is it worth it to spend $200 more on the same computer with an Intel Core i7 720QM(1.60GHz)? Again, I'm looking at playing TF2 and hopefully Diablo 3 at decent settings whenever it is released.
