Looking at a new laptop. The HP dm3z with the Turion 625 and Radeon 4330. With 4 GB of memory, one of the 7200 rpm hard drives, and its 1280x800 resolution, will this laptop be able to run Aion on lowest settings? What about older games like Europa Universalis 3 or Company of Heroes?

How will my laptop handle Far Cry 2 at 1280 x 800? I'll be upgrading to 4GB RAM before playing it.

Is that laptop new? If so post in the "what notebook should i buy" section... If not, it may be time to upgrade.

The CPU is the real bottleneck here, the 2600 barely passes. You will not get mid-high @ 1280*800 in all of those games. Street Fighter 4 is the only one I see mid/high. The rest low, or low/med.

Google the minimum system requirements. My guess would be 800x600 all low if it passes the developers minimum.

    Aion all low? Yes.
Europa and Company of Heroes should run fine at at least medium. Coh (medium/low).

Turn the shadows, shaders and geometric effects down and it should be able to push medium.

I need help, I'm new to the whole Alienware scene... and frankly the PC gaming scene too.
I really want to buy Crysis but I need to know... Is it worth my money and will it run well on my setup ?
I downloaded Crysis Warhead (just to try it) and it ran like crap, I had to turn EVERYTHING down and then it just looked like crap.
I will admit I'm a noob and I don't really know where to look for my video drivers and such.
But i've seen tons of videos on YouTube of people running this game beautifully (obviously with better specs but still).
Please give me a hand, thanks.

And you can add me on MSN if you want.

Well that's no good... Regardless if I didn't up the video card, Alienware claims to be the highest end gaming system.
In my email from ordering the laptop it says I have
    1GB NVIDIA GeForce GTX 260M

But when I ran "test my rig" on xfire.com it says
    Video Card: NVIDIA GeForce 9400

...Are these the same... Damn I'm a noob

The 260 is in a totally different league than the 9400! If you paid for a 260 I would send the laptop back.

    1) Try updating drivers before you run screaming at AW.
    2) Xfire could just be confused.
    3) Try downloading HW Monitor to see what GPU it states.

The 9400M isn't even available with the M15X, only M17X.

He didn't state which model he was using. Would have to assume he's using the M17X.

You're on the wrong forum then if you've got that sort of hardware. On second thought, if the accuracy of your description is akin to your spelling then there's little point in further posts.

Did you buy the M17X or M15X?

If it was the M17X you bought, you might have to switch to non-integrated graphics. The M17X comes with BOTH the 9400M and GTX 260M.

    You're the man dtwn.
After doing some updates (Mainly just Windows 7 updates) It seems like I do have both.
A little weird that it didn't show both until after I did the updates.
But all seems well now, I just downloaded Crysis from steam so when I get home from work in a couple hours I'm gonna give it a shot.
How do you think it will run ?
    Thanks guys !

*EDIT* Oh, and I've got the M17X... Damn thing is beautiful

Cool. Have fun with your new toy. Sometimes you just need to update the drivers to see what turns up.

    I had thought it was the M15X at first, then realized 9400M + GTX260M = M17X.

Hey, I've decided to go with different computer that I found for about $200 less than the last one that I was looking at... I believe that it is better, but I would like to know what the difference between the "2.4GHz AMD Turion X2 Ultra ZM-87 Dual-Core" and the "2.2 GHz Intel® Core™ 2 Duo T6600" is. I know the AMD has +.2GHz, but is the Intel still better? I dunno, I've heard people talk crap about both of them. :/ The new specs are:
    2.4GHz AMD Turion X2 Ultra ZM-87 Dual-Core
    L2: 2MB Cache
    6GB memory
ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4650 (M96) with 1024MB dedicated'
    500GB, 5400rpm hard drive
    Windows Vista Home Premium (64-bit)
    -------
so yeah... L4D2? TF2? HL2? Pretty much anything else made by Valve...

oryt, mine is the following specs,
    Dell Studio 1557
    Intel® Core™ i7-720QM processor (1.6GHz, 6MB Cache)
    4GB (2GBx2) 1333MHz DDR3 SDRAM
512MB ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4570
    15.6 " Full HD(1080p)WLED (1920 x 1080)Display with TrueLife™

and another laptop is sony CW series(recent hit)
    core 2 duo p8700 2.53
512MB nVidia GT 230M (which i heard is better ranked than HD 4570)
the rest same specs as dell studio 1557

so in this case , which laptop can run modern games better.
as in which aspect matters the most, processor or the graphic card.
i need more opinions and answers.
    thanks very much.

The two processors are basically the same in terms of speed. You can probably clock the AMD higher, and the ZM-87 isn't bad. You can definitely run everything from Valve on high.

I'm not sure what the comparison between the i7 and the p8700 is, but yes the GT230 is better than the 4570. If you're going to game, I'd suggest the second laptop

There's not a huge noticeable difference in DDR2 vs DDR3 ram. IF this was graphics cards, then that's a whole different story, but it is not. You will be able to run both of those fine. Probably mostly high, with some settings at medium.

Well, I checked on systemrequirementslab.com, and it says my machine passes recommended (not minimum) specs for "left 4 dead", "left 4 dead goty" and "left 4 dead 2"...
however, they don't have assassin's creed 2 on their games list so I can't check it there!

Can someone please give me an idea or list of all the things that you can change in a game, like settings and all that business to get a good flowing frame rate? How do you go about changing them all?
Sorry people, I'm trying to get into computer gaming rather than consoles, so I haven't got much of an idea with all this stuff.

    Thanks!

Go into options/settings, then click video options/settings. You have to check yourself for the best framerate/settings combination.

shaylh, you can't check Assassin's Creed 2 because it's not out yet. But in all likelihood, you might be able to squeeze through with the low/med settings (mostly low) on a low resolution. Hope this helps

Of course you can, on medium resolutiona and reasonable settings.

Maybe you will have to put down some of graphic settings during the game, dependable of how the game acts with default ones, due to average graphic card for this kind of game.

so...u are more than safe. and there is one more thing...don't go about listening to what people say about your gfx. play n find out. an ati radeon 3000 or 4000 series card will run most games just fine...unless you are one of those who suffers a heart attack if the fps drops by a tiny winy bit

so..chill out...thats one hell of a machine you've got there. my first laptop was the same. got it replaced after 6 months by a sxps 16....had the complete cover warranty :D

I think the CPU might choke, keel over, and die.

I would say batman, l4d and ra3 will run maxed out and crysis will be playable @ high settings except for the shaders which u might consider on lowering to medium. Still good rig for mobile pc games :)

my desktop PC is 2.4 GHz quad core with 8800 GTS with 2gb of ram, and it is playable at lowest settings, but there are points where aim feels laggy (yes vertical sync is off), so I don't really think your specs are enough to handle the game. Give me your email address and I can send you a gift pass on Steam that will let you test it.

    Not even close

maybe on all low settings including resoultion your CPU is far too weak and your GPU is pretty weak to run GTAIV on those settings

I can max out everything on MW2 and Fallout 3, the other games require way less.
So yeah youre gonna love your new laptop!! :D

Btw people, if you want a reliable piece of advice go to CAN YOU RUN IT? . That comes very handy, really usefull.

yea but can you run it doesn't always have all the reqs i need not to mention the fact that most have only the minimum requirements and don't display the recommended ones. Just tried out ccc vers 2.21 for crysis (level 5) and it's great. For those who wanna run crysis/crysis warhead and aren't confident in their machines just google ccc (v 2.21 is the best i think), it's a mod that optimizes crysis and crysis warhead for lower end pcs and enhances effects with custom graphical shaders (like time of day enhancement)
