The real world testing on notebookcheck(scroll down below to see the FPS on settings), are based on the GDDR3 of the card, I assume his card would be GDDR5(just a guess XD), Plus its a 15.6" screen, which would have a resolution of 1366x768(statistical guess since most laptops of that screen size would have this resolution). Now I have a 15.6 HP Dv6 core2duo with ATI 4530, which is a 512 GDDR3, I overclocked it a bit, but at 1366x768, I could max out mass effect 2, get medium to high settings on farcry 2 and crysis. Now he has the HD 5470, a huge leap from 4530, I believe he can run the game better than mine. XD

just my 2cents on the topic XD

haha yeah i dont know if the card is GDDR3 or GDDR5 etc. it came with the laptop. is there a way i can find out?
also the resolution is 1920x1080. would the game run faster on a lower resolution? or do you think i should just leave it as is?

You definitely have to lower the res lol. And yes the game will run a lot faster with lower res. And do what wishmaster said, download gpu z and it will tell you the graphics memory type.

Okay so finally got a chance to mess with blur since it finished downloading; and there isn't any separate graphical options to change aside from AA, you get 4 settings with 3 boxes showing what level you're on.

1920x1080 no AA with vsync on the lowest setting possible gets at least 30FPS during single player, small drops here and there, but for the most part it will hover around 30 fps, using the next step up makes it not really playable for me, only ~22fps. Running with 600/1550/500 on the laptop I have below.

The game looks good enough even on the lowest setting, so It's not much of a bother to me, this is more of a GPU dependent game than CPU.

So im thinking of getting an XPS 16 for college, but also to game on. The specs are as follows:

    CPU: Intel® Core™ i7-720QM Quad Core Processor 1.6GHz (2.8GHz Turbo Mode, 6MB Cache)
    GPU: ATI Mobility RADEON® HD 4670 – 1GB
RAM: 4GB Shared Dual Channel DDR3 at 1333MHz
Display: Edge-to-Edge FHD Widescreen 15.6 inch WLED LCD (1920x1080) W/2.0 MP

Running Genuine Windows® 7 Home Premium, 64bit, English

I plan on playing WoW, SC2, Oblivion, Bf2BC, borderlands, TF2, CoD MW2, Half Life 2 and possibly EVE, as well as a few other games.

Well if you can run the game at 1080, you should leave it as it is, for more FPS lower the resolution. :D

That HD3200 is a very low-level integrated card. You won't be doing any gaming on that.

If you're going for an ATi card, look for something with at least a 4570, or if nVidia, a 9600M (or GT 240M).

Which card would do better playing Dirt 2? (And the next Grid as well)

I'm looking at both the Macbook Pro 15 and the HP Envy 14, and I'm trying to figure out which will do a better job with Dirt 2. I understand that the 330M isn't DX11, but I don't know how much better it will look on the 5650 because both cards won't be able to run it in that high detail. I also realize that to OC the MBP I would have to boot it in Windows 7, but I don't know which is easier to do.

Any advice, suggestions, or other input would be greatly appreciated!

I'm thinking about getting a Lenovo ThinkPad W510. The graphics card is a Quadro FX 880M. Obviously, that should be great for flight simulation, but just how well would it be able to play the plethora of future user created content for StarCraft II? We're talking guns that shoot nukes and "Cannot Create More Units" here. Provided I can get it, the native resolution will be 1920x1080, and it will almost certainly have 4GB of RAM (1066MHz most likely). chlwotjd678, I'm looking at you.

Also, suppose that instead of a 720QM or 820QM, the laptop had a dual-core 620M. StarCraft II is geared for dual-core processing, so could this actually improve performance?

You will be able to run it. Here's a laptop that has a similar setups as yours(performance wise) running DA:O.
YouTube - Gaming On Radeon HD 3200 - Dragon Age Origins
    Crysis - low settings.
Battlefiled: Bad Company 2- low-med settings
Metro 2033 - Sry but no way looking at its crazy system requirements.

    Lower res low-med settings

Haha thanks for asking me for help :D Starcraft II will run fluently on Ultra settings. If not, high settings. I'm not sure if the dual core is going to actually "Improve" the performance. But looking at the specs of each processors, the 620M might have a increase in performance as it has higher clocks.

I say go with the HP Envy 14 as the hd 5650 will outperform the 330m GT. DiRT 2 should run on medium-high settings.

Duke nukem 3d, doom, blood and half life (lowest settings). I agree with abandonware.

BTW, if it's a pentium mmx or anything before pentium 3, then it probably has an unlocked multiplier so you can overclock it pretty easy (there should be some resistors on the motherboard that act like jumpers).

I remember I took the pentium mmx 166mhz CPU in my old toshiba notebook from 2.5x to 3x (200mhz).
Then you can try to find the PLL and pinmod that, or try using some old software like clockgen or softFSB (not setfsb) to get the FSB up.

Potential System: Sony VAIO VGN-FW590F3B Notebook PC
    - Intel Core 2 Duo T6600 2.20GHz,
    - 4GB DDR2,
    - Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit,
    - ATI Mobility Radeon HD4650 graphics with 512MB of dedicated VRAM to tackle any graphics requirement (2287MB Total Available Graphics Memory),

Starcraft 2 (Based upon Beta requirements)
    World of Warcraft
Diablo 3 (Potentially at least, considering no system req's are out yet)

I have a Sony Vaio VGN-NR498E and it has issues running World of Warcraft due to WoW requiring the updated drivers for the video card, yet the Sony hardware wont run 'properly' on the new driver. (Screen goes black if not connected to power).

Please let me know. Thank you. My system budget is $800, and this one is right on the edge of this budget. I'll even take suggestions for other systems into consideration. Again, thanks.

Crysis Warhead should run on high - max settings
    Battlefield Bad Company 2 - High~Max settings
    Dirt 2- maxed settings

Do you mind if the laptop is reburshied? If not, you can get this Asus G51vx http://cgi.ebay.com/ASUS-G51VX-RX05...ViewItem&pt=Laptops_Nov05&hash=item45f1473f00 which will run all those games High~maxed settings
Even with that Sony VAIO VGN-FW590F3B, you will be able to run those games on high settings But I suggest that you take a look at the Asus.

Hmm weird.. Did you try turning the resolution all the way down?
Try this http://www.moddb.com/mods/gossamers-launcher to change some of the settings that you can't access in game.
Also try this http://download.cnet.com/Game-Booster/3000-18541_4-10913645.html to get some loads off your cpu.

I don't mind if the system is refurbished, but I would prefer a system with Windows 7. While the graphics card in the Asus is significantly better than the one in the Sony, the CPU is slower. How much of a difference would this make?

Here are the 'recommended' settings for Starcraft 2 (Beta)

    * Windows Vista®/Windows® 7
    * Dual Core 2.4Ghz Processor
    * 2 GB RAM
    * 512 MB NVIDIA® GeForce® 8800 GTX or ATI Radeon® HD 3870 or better

    What about this system: http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=5753605??

    Thanks for the assistance.

I would say med-high settings at full HD.. at max settings at 1600X900..but G73 is a better option in long term and only slightly more expensive..

it should play theseon high settings with hd res... 1366X768.

Hi, I just purchased an ASUS U30JC-A1. Here's the specs:

    CPU: Intel Core i3 350M 2.26Ghz

VGA: nVIDIA GeForce 310M VRAM 512MB (also has integrated graphics with new nVIDIA Optimus technology)

    RAM: 4 GB DDR3

    HDD: 320GB

I do more serious gaming on my Xbox 360. I just need one or two decent choices to play on the PC while at school. Thanks! =)

You can go with the g60vx if you don't mind 16inch laptop. I have the Asus g50vt x5 which has similar specs as the g60vx except that the gpu in the g50vt is weaker than the 260m. The g50vt has 9800m GS. I still play Starcraft 2 beta fluently on High-ultra settings native res. And about the slower cpu thing, remember, you can't really replace the gpu in most laptops but you can almost always upgrade the cpu and most games are more dependent on the gpu.

That laptop is a mid range laptop and will play most games on low med settings. What type of games do you like to play? FPS? RPG? RTS?

    What will it play?
Please recommend me games to play on this system.
I do not play games as of now but I am willing to try any game.

    Gateway NV5387U

CPU: AMD Turion II Ultra 2.4GHz
GPU: ATI Radeon HD 4200 Graphics (Up to 1919MB of HyperMemory)
    RAM: 4GB Shared Dual Channel DDR2 667MHz

OS: Windows 7 Home Premium 64-Bit
    Display: 1366 x 768 HD Widescreen Ultrabright™ LED-backlit Display 15.6"
    Sound: High-definition Audio

I know its not a straight up gaming notebook but I want to know what it "could" play.
    I appreciate any suggestions!

try orange box , counter strike , Call of Duty MW2...

orange box but basically very old games.. IMO , just return it and get something else...

you should be able to but seriously , u can get a better version easily from dell outlet and upgrade it to 5870 and play any games on high...

    Hi.

I can't decide which one is better

    1) Samsung i5-520M, GT 330M, Hard drive has 5400 rpm S-ATA

    vs

    2) Lenovo i5-430M, ATi HD 5650, Hard drive has 7200 rpm

    All other specs are equal.

Samsung has better CPU, but lenovo has better graphic card and hard drive.

So what do you guys think I should buy?

    Thanks

if you have a need for the 5650, you can always upgrade the cpu later.

It really depends on what you are doing with the computer. For me personally, I would go for the Lenovo as the CPU's won't be that different in the real world.

I havent bought the system yet but I was planning on buying it.
What would you suggest for a $600 and below budget?
Its going to mainly for school, web surfing, and light game play.
    Ill appreciate any suggestions. Thanks!

    Spec-wise I'd also go for 2nd setup.

The second one. The difference between the 5650 and the 330M is greater than the difference than the 430M and 520M, plus the second one comes with the faster hard drive.
