I was looking to buy a new laptop for some gaming. I know its not a gaming laptop but I would like to know at what settings can I play the following games at. Sorry, not very computer savvy :D. I mainly play games on consoles.

    COD: MW2
    Starcraft 2
    Team Fortress 2
Counter Strike Source ( I know I can max this I think...)
    BFBC:2
Metro 2033 (Just to see what kind of future games I will be able to play)
    and GTA: IV

    The specs:
Operating System: Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit
CPU Type: Intel Core i5 450M(2.4GHz) Turbo Boost to 2.66GHz
Screen: 17.3" 1600x900 with Ultrabright Tech
    Memory Size: 4GB DDR3
    Hard Disk: 500GB at 5400 rpm :(
    Optical Drive: DVD Super Multi
Graphics Card: ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5650 with 1GB of GDDR3 Dedicated Memory

    Or the link: Newegg.com - Gateway NV79C47u NoteBook Intel Core i5 450M(2.40GHz) 17.3" 4GB Memory DDR3 1066 500GB HDD 5400rpm DVD Super Multi ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5650

Is this a good deal for $800? Can anyone suggest a laptops with better specs less than $800?

    Thanks :D

i may not be an expert on this but you can prob run sc2 at about a mixed high to ultra settings ( dont quote me on this but i am checking on notebookcheck.net). They have a pretty good list at what games you are able to play with your graphics card.

Notebookcheck: Computer Games on Laptop Graphic Cards

and search NVIDIA Quadro FX 2700M

it does not have Starcraft 2 on the list but that game is not a very demanding game.

I'm looking at an Asus UL80Jt laptop. If I want to play less demanding games like The Orange Box, Guild Wars 2(when released), Devil May Cry 4, and some other DirectX 10.1 games on full settings will they be playable on a laptop with these specs:
    CPU: Intel® Core™ i3-330UM @ 1.2ghz
GPU: NVIDIA GeForce 310M w/ Optimus Tech and 1gb DDR3 Ram
    RAM: 4gb DDR3 1066
    Display: 1366 x 768

Thank you so much for your reply. I did look at the Vaio F and liked it too. However the weight of the machine seems to hold me at bay. I like the Vaio Z but the only apprehension holding me back is since I am new to the line, I have no idea whether 3D softwares (like Stusio Max, Maya etc) would run on it. From your answer I can understand that a machine with a Quad core would be better for that kind of work, however these programmes WILL run on vaio Z (with the dual core proc + 330m GT) - although they may not run as effectively as on the Vaio F ? Am I right in understanding that? Thanks.

Would these specs run Starcraft 2 well at all? (hopefully maybe at or near maxed out settings?) I wouldn't mind lowering the resolution down a bit if I have to.

Alright so I play on getting my new Envy 14 in about 10 days... It comes with an ATi 5650 (all other specs in sig)... But I mean... I wanna run games like Crysis (duh) but I was wondering what the limit will be for gaming on a 5650. The games im looking to run are:

    Fallout 3
    Crysis
    Crysis 2
    Star Wars: The Old Republic
    Battle Field Bad Company 2
    Ahhhh, and Star Craft 2
    etc.

    So what should I expect?

yes it should run on high to max settings at 1366X768..

most probably not..shared graphics is integrated graphics and usually u can't run games at all or well.

should be able to on high to max settings.

quite good and it should play these games at med-high settings on 1600X900..

if u want something better , try asus G73.. it won't be obsolete by next year and has a way better graphics card that the dell and should play games on high-max settings on full hd res unlike the dell.

should not be a problem at 1366X768... should work at 1600X900 too.

I need a laptop that will run Maya. I don't do a ton of rendering at the moment, but that could and most likely will change. Here are the laptops I've been looking at. I've priced them out and they all come out to about the same price so I guess it comes down to graphics cards. Looking for any recommendations. Thanks!

    A 'quickie' here ;)

Samsung R580 - Euro Truck Simulator. I'm running Win 7 if it's important for this game. Is my PC good enough to run this one?

Thanks in advance for a reply, helpful guys;]

EDIT: What about German Truck Simulator? I saw a review like 5 mins ago and I spotted a big difference in requriements - Euro is 'heavier' that German.

    Once again, thx for reply.

I know the 5870 is ATI's top of the line mobile graphics card, but I'm never quite sure which Nvidia card is the best/which one compares with the 5870 in terms of performance power. I can't find very many benchmarks on the net of mobile cards, so I was wondering if people here could help me figure out how they all compare in terms of power. Thanks.

    480m
    5870
    285m
    460m
    360m = 260m
    425m

nv further complicates matters by adding gs, gtx, gx and gts to the names; the order from best to worst in that case is gtx > gx > gts > gs

In this case it would be:

    5870
    GTX 285M
    GTX 260M
    GTS 360M
    425M

Whilst the GTS360M should technically be faster than the GTX 260M, seeing as it (usually) has GDDR5 RAM, it has less cores (96 compared to the 260M's 112) which bottlenecks the card, making the 260M marginally faster.

Obviously, the 5870 is the fastest of all those cards (the 480M is faster in certain tests, but, it's more expensive, uses more power and generates more heat for minimal performance gain).

Yeah. It's so good compared to the 3650 in my Toshiba.

Hope you get yours soon Sean, because it is a beautiful machine.

BTW, 1600 x 900 doesn't bother me. Better performance at native resolution. ;)

That review definitely seems in favor of the GTX 480M. Some scores even show the GTX 285M beating the 5870, which is just not so. I suspect that many of the people on Toms Hardware are NVIDIA fanboys.

I'm trying to decide on which graphics card to get for my needs. I had originally decided on the 1 GB ATI 5650, but I recently found out that I can get a 512 MB ATI 5470 for $75 less. Money is pretty tight for me right now, so the extra savings would really be nice. I'm mainly looking to play some RTS games, but I will probably pick up some FPS games at some point too. Which card will be enough for me?

There is tremendous difference between these two cards, that $75 could let you get another year or two out of the notebook.

even when money is tight, you need a machine that will last 2-3 years and satisfy your needs. If you go with a 5470, it won't even satisfy your needs for a single day and you'll regret it for the next 2-3 years. Skip lunch for the next month, but you definitely need to get the 5650.

    Hi,
I'm considering getting a new laptop with either an ATI 5165 or ATI 5650, and I've been wondering is there a real noticeable difference between the two?
NotebookCheck says the 5165 is an ovcerclocked 4650, and the 5650 is on par with the 4670.

what other featuers does the 5650 has that I'll be missing in the 5165, other than DX11?
would one really need DX11 with a midrange mobile card?

So which one should I get? considering the one with the 5165 costs much less (specs about the same, except for core i3 vs core i5, which doesn't matter to me)

    Thanks for the help.

Get the 5650, you will notice the increase in performance over the 5165 on higher settings. I would also check which type of memory both cards have, if the 5650 has more recent GDDR, then all the more reason to get the 5650.

    They both only have DDR3.
Can you please tell me why you think the 5650 will give you better frame rates at higher settings? if I'm not using DX11 does it still help to have it?
I'm just really not sure that the processing power of both cards is much different.

I am getting a M17x with 4gb mem, I-7 820 , 1920 rgb led screen with 4870 in crossire as a replacement .Really was pushing for 5870 in crossfire but dell has been saying no to that. The games I play are Rolepaying games like Dragon age Origin and Roeplaying games like Dawn of War 2 . For games like this is there any reason to upgrade to the 5870 from the 4870 for these games.
Would there be any difference in proformance from a system with a I-720 and 5870 , vs a system with I-7 820 and 4870 .

You'll be able to max out those games fine with your setup. I think the performance difference between hd 5870 and hd 4870 is slightly noticeable

Yes you 'll be able to run most modern games on high settings.

You 'll be able to run it at least on high settings. Mabye some settings cranked up to Ultra too. :D

Hey I was wondering how well these laptops can run World of Warcraft: WOTLK and Heroes of Newerth. I know the Y460 has a much better graphics card but i want to see if the Z560 will suffice for these games (it has a number pad and I like it a lot). I also want the laptop to last for 3yrs+ since I am a college student and don't have money to buy a new one during school. Any suggestions are also welcome! I like lenovo cause I hear they have very good quality, I also love toshiba however I can't find a laptop they had with the specs I need for the price ($900 MAX).

    1st choice: Lenovo Z560 $793.36
    CPU:Intel® Core™ i5-540M Processor ( 2.53GHz 1066MHz 3MB )
    GPU: NVIDIA GeForce 310M 512MB
    RAM:4 GB PC3-8500 DDR3 SDRAM 1066MHz
    HDD:500GB 5400
    Display:15.6" HD Wide LED 1366x768

    2nd choice: Lenovo Y460 $835.16
    CPU:Intel® Core™ i5-520M Processor ( 2.40GHz 1066MHz 3MB )
    GPU:ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5650 1GB
    RAM:4 GB PC3-8500 DDR3 SDRAM 1066MHz
    HDD:500GB 5400
    Display:14.0" HD Wide LED 1366x768

I'm stretching my budget with this computer so want to see if it'll play the games I want to play before I buy it

    HP dv6z
    AMD Turion II Dual-Core Mobile Processor P520 (2.3GHz, 2MB L2 Cache)
    4GB DDR3 System Memory
    320gb 7200rpm SATA Hard Drive
512MB ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5470
15.6" diagonal High Definition LED HP Brightview Display (1366x768)

The games I'm looking to play are:
    Empire Total War
    Napoleon Total War
    Starcraft 2(if possible)
baseball and football mogul games(buy new one each year)

Will these be playing and at what settings?

    thank you guys very much!

    Paul
