I hesitate either to buy an MSI GX640 or a Asus N53 Jq.

The first one includes the ATI 5850, the second one features NVIDIA GT425, which I haven't heard a lot about.

    Can anybody inform me?

    Thanks!

Considering that the top end of nvidia, the 480M is 10-20% stronger than the HD5870, I strongly believe that the GT425 won't come even close to the HD5850.

It's probably a 48 shaders unit card, pretty much the same as the 330M or who knows.

Thanks a lot. So I suppose the N53 JQ won't be a good laptop to game?

It certainly won't be as fast as the GX640. The GT425 isn't even listed on any sites I can find, and given Nvidia's past naming conventions it will likely only be as fast as a GeForce 220 or so, which is just barely able to run older games.

Would this computer run starcraft 2 at middle details? I have been able to run bioshock, with a little lag, before.

    CPU: T8300 (dual core)
    GPU: x2300 ATI
    RAM: 2 GO
    Display: 1280x800

    ALSO

Would the NVIDIA GT 425 (on N53) run SC2 at full specs?
    i5 or i7 CPU
    1366x768 display
    4 go ram

Most of the games at med to high. but for crysis and fallout maybe low to med, and that would be only around 30 fps

With the x2300, you wont be able to run sc2 at med settings. i dont even think on low settings. never even hear of the NVIDIA GT 425, can u give me a link to the laptop?

GTA 4:med settings avg 40 fps
    Sims 3:full settings 100+ fps
Cod4:med settings 70+, high settings avg 40 fps
MW2:med settings avg 50, high settings avg 40
    TF2:full settings 100+ fps
Just Cause 2: Very low settings and that is below 20 fps (never played this game so dont quote me on this)
AC: med to high (can't say fps)
AC2: mixture of med to high (can't say fps)

Can you give me a link to this laptop? Might consider buying it if it's less than $900 :D

it will run on low-med settings at 1366X768.

2nd option is way better.. should be more than enough to play games on high to max settings at 1366X768.

Very Low settings.. look for something else or tell us ur budget so we can find something better.

The MSI GX640 will be much better with DirectX 11 for sure so get this.

    1. ASUS N53JQ-A1 - XOTIC PC - ASUS Custom Laptop for the GT 425. People say it will look like the 330m or maybe be a bit better.

    2. You think the x2300 wouldn't run SC2 even on low settings? Hum. Weird it ran bioshock at med settings isn't it? I think I'll dl the beta to see it myself.

I'm getting a new laptop and I seriously messed up the configuration, I forgot that graphics cards cant be upgraded and RAM can, and based on the stated configuration can I run any games? I would really love to play Crysis or at least NFS Undercover or Just Cause 2 or Juiced 2 on it.

    Thanks

lol u did mess up the configuration. You will be able to play Crysis on low settings around 50 fps but you wont be able to run Just Cause 2 or NFS very well. Modern racing games require powerful gpu and the 5470 wont be able to do it.

Below is the config of the laptop that I intend to purchase :

    HP DV4 2101
    # WIndows 7 Home Premium
    # 14.1″ inch (1366×768 pixels) LED Backlit Display
    # Intel Core i3-330M Processor (2.13 GHz, 1066MHZ FSB, 3MB L2 Cache)
    # Integrated Intel GMA 4500 Graphics
    # 3GB RAM
    # 320GB HDD
    # DVD Writer
    # Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n
    # Bluetooth
    # 5-in-1 Memory Card Reader
    # 2 Stereo Speakers
    # Finger print reader
    # WebCam with Microphone
    # 6-cell Lithium-Ion battery
    # Weight |- 2.26 Kg

Now,my query..is this enough to play relatively non-intense games like FIFA 10?

    Cheers

    Hi,

I am on the verge of getting an envy 14 and selling my sager np8662.

I have been looking for a comparison between these two cards. Some say that the 5650 is not far behind the 260m...about 5-10% behind. Others says that it is more..about 30% behind the nvidia card.

Do any of you guys know how close is the ATI card vs the nvidia card is? if it is 5%~10%, I will bite the bullet. but if it is more than that, I will stick with my sager.

By the way, which video card is stronger.. the nvidia 9800m GTS or the ATI 5650

    Thanks

Avg. result in 3DMark Vantage is 3227 for the ati 5650 and 4953 for the 260m gtx. I'd say the 260 is about 40-60% more powerful.

The Integrated graphics card may not be able to play 2010 games.
I guess very low settings would work.
At least it gets 79 FPS on High on a 1999 game.

In other words, it's the worst of the worst.

Yes, you should be able to play. You're just like me and my brother :p
He has the old Dell Studio 14 and he's able to play these games fine.
Starcraft 2 should be able to run on Medium or High. Same goes for LoL and HoN. WC3 should be able to run on high everything. Heck, I run WC3 on a Pentium 4 Processor and a 9800GT on my desktop.

Not really. The GTX260M is still a bit (~10%) faster than the 5830 I have, at least at stock speeds.

Oh, very much so. Especially with the GDDR5, it will eat the 5830 and the 260 for breakfast. I was just saying that the 5830 isn't faster than the GTX 260M. And coming from someone who has one and loves it, you can take that to the bank ;)

Source engine would get around medium-high graphics. TF2 however may stutter a bit, it's loaded with particle effects which eat up your CPU.
CoD4 should be fine on high 35 FPS+. MW2 would go for medium.

Hey guys, if I can choose between two systems, one with an nvidia gt330m and the other with an ati 5650, which one should I pick for better overall gaming performance? (they both have an i7 quadcore cpu and 4gb of memory) I understand that the 5650 performs slightly better, but is it significant? And if I go with the 5650, would I really miss the lack of PhysX support (I'm assuming it's nvidia only) if I only intend to play Starcraft 2 and Source games?

    Thanks!

yes.. max settings at 1366X768... i do so even on my specs which are about half as good.

oops didn't know that for sure but a 5830 is still better than a 5650.. but if u don't mind the weight 5850 is great...

With your high res, it could get a little laggy at high but the graphics card and cpu is good enough to run it smoothly at medium to high. I'd say 35+ FPS (on ultra to high.) for all games.

yup should be able to on high to max settings at native res....

MW2 for sure but crysis will be on med settings at display res and slightly lower at monitor res.

your CPU is too weak. You need to upgrade it otherwise low-med settings is most u can get.

    I have a "Suger NP5793" with a NVIDIA GeForce 9800M GTS (512MB) VGA card.
But I have many problems because of its heavy weight.
I decided to buy a "Dell 1558" with a ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5470 (1GB) VGA card.
    I need to know:
Which of this two VGAs are more powerful?
Is the difference between this two VGAs really too much?
Is "Dell 1558" a suitable gaming laptop?

The 5470 is a massivly underpowered chip suitable only for very basic games. In games like left 4 dead 2 or crysis it will choke no matter the settings and in older games you will still need to lower the detail settings.

The 9800M GTS is a far more capable chip and moving to a 5470 will rule out modern gaming.

The Nvidia 9800M GTS, hands down.

It's quite a jump, and as Meaker said, it's a pretty underpowered card, especially if you're coming from a 9800M GTS.

Not really, but it can play games. As long as you don't mind running games on much lower settings and the framerate will be less, then I can't see why it couldn't be used to play games.
What kind of games do you have in mind, for that matter?

it is a massive downgrade.. if u want something lighter consider an Acer timline X in 14 inch with ATI 5650 in swithcable graphics.. will be a 10-15% downgrade only and laptop will be light and have great battery life and gaming performance will also be good.

Yeah im still waiting on my Envy 14 and I'm using my Dell inspiron E1505 with an ATi X1400... I can run all the source games maxed out at 1280X800 fine minus TF2 which I have to take the resolution to 800X600 or whatever and my FPS are completely fine.

The ATI 5650 is almost equal to an 8800gts... Maybe a 20% downgrade but yeah thats a nice option...

Would it be better for me to get Just Cause 2 on my Macbook Pro, or on PS3?
I don't yet have Windows, so I can't try out the demo to compare, and am curious as to your opinions.

I have the new Macbook Pro 15'' i5 with the Geforce 330M

    Thank you!

Also, will my Macbook pro be able to run the advanced water effects without slowdown?
