That's a glorified 3dmark score used to convince the average joe whether or not a game is playable on their system.

The yougamer reviews do a better job when they tell you roughly how good a game plays on various hardware configurations.

then 4gb will be plenty. the first option would be better if you're set on getting a xps1640. i suggest you check the dell subforum and the NBR review thread on the laptop.

Hi guys need some advice. I have just installed halo 2.

but the games runs like crap and i know my machine should be able to detry this game but I am prob getting less than 10fps on this thing totaly unplayable......

From reading some of the treads it seems it may be a driver issue...that being the case i am not downgradeing my drivers jus so i can play this game when all my other games run fine.

Can anyone give advice on wheather or not their is way around this driver thing?

I can't answer whether its a driver issue, but I can state that Halo 2 is a very poorly optimized game for the PC and most people are known to have issues running it on more than capable machines.

Hi guys, I have a question here...Im planning on buying a new laptop with these settings..I was wondering what games i would be able to play and at what settings I could play them at...and especially the game Company of Heroes..and also should i get another processor like the P8600 for $100 more because every1 tells me the processor might be an issue. One more thing.. is it worth it to get the Windows Vista Home Premium Package 1 with 64 bit or windows XP

    Thanks!

Great game on the xbox, terrible on the pc :(
Turn the "particles" setting down, resolution to 1280 x 800 and no AA and give it a go. Your processor is probably holding you back a little.

Old games; Half life 2, battlefield 2 etc. If you can be more specific as to what kind of games you want to play then we'll be able to help more.

    Medium settings @ 1280 x 800 sounds reasonable :)
Xp won't improve performance a whole lot but would be usefull for compatibility with old games.

If your planning on playing alot of RTS' then a faster processor would be worth the money. If it's only COH then the T6400 will be fine. I'd go for 64bit vista over xp, you'll only be able to take advantage of the whole 4gb of ram with a 64bit os; something over 3 gb with a 32bit os.

hey all, been looking at buying the girlfriend a laptop. she spends too much time on my pc using facebook, and I got her addicted to lord of the rings online. saw this at futureshop on sale for 519.00 CAD.

    AMD Athlon 64X2 Dual-Core QL-62 2GHz
    ATI Radeon 3100
2 Gigs of ram, no listing on speed or type, assume ddr2 800, mostly likely upgrade
160 gig 5200 rpm hdd, again, no listing on type, probably replace
vista home premium, mostly likely 32-bit, doesn't say.

now, all I really want it to do is be able to play LOTRO well, not on any high settings, but smoothly. oh, and this would be the first laptop I've ever considered buying, and I've only really ever repaired, and swapped hdds out, I admit to knowing next to nothing about laptop gpus. other then to stay away from intels integrated. there is another toshiba for 599, with a better intel dual core, but it comes with the intel 4500 gpu, and I'd rather not heh

You'll be able to upgrade to any processor that uses the same socket; "socket P" (the one all the good processors use :D)
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Intel_Core_2_microprocessors#Core_2_Duo_2

COH: High DX9 1280 x 800, lower post processing & effects density/quality if you want better performance.
    Crysis: Medium DX10 @ 1280 x 800, DX9 for better performance
    COD4/WAW: High @ 1280 x 800
    RA3: Med - High @ 1280 x 800
    WIC: Medium @ 1280 x 800
    Fallout3: Med - High @ 1280 x 800
    Far cry 2: High @ 1280 x 800, maybe medium shadows

    Any more just ask.

LOTRO should run fine on low settings at least, probably low - medium @ 1024 x 768.
The 3100 is better than the 4500 but the 3200 is better again if you can find it in any similarly prices laptops it would be a worthy upgrade for games.

Welcome to the NBR forums. :)

thanks for posting, but you should read the stickies first.

please read the GPU Guide if you havent yet.

you will find that the Nvidia 9600M is better than the 8600M.

the ATI 3200 and Nvidia 9200 are very low-end and usually integrated... using shared memory.

The 8600M would be the best for gaming out of the three cards you listed.

I don't see you having a problem running 95% of the games on the market at this date..
Def wont be able to max them out by any means, but you'll enjoy them.

Knock yourself out, Dawn of War 2 is the newest game on the list but even that should see every graphical detail maxed out on your native resolution with few problems.

Hey, I'm new here :) . I'm getting a laptop for my birthday in a few weeks and was just wondering how well it would cope with modern games in general. I usually play BF2 and would like to try Crysis but my PC's (mighty!) Nvidia 6200 would probably dissolve. Laptop specs should be in my signature. Thanks in advance!

    oKay. I think I'll get this pc T6400, Core 2 Duo 2.0 Ghz,4GB ram ddr2 800mhz,
ati hd 3450 256mb. can I play fsx, grid, and il2 1946 on good or okay settings?
What about an at hd 3470 256 mb, or 512 mb ati hd 3650, 9300m gs 512mb, or 9600mgt 512mb?
What gives a balance of performance and power?

    medium, medium-high
you could run most modern games at medium on 1280x800
you would be able to play gta and probably get a good frame rate on low settings

    what?
