    DOW: High
    DOW2: Med - High
    COH: High DX9
    COD4: High
    COD5: Med - High

Your framerate would drop slightly in RTS games such as COH or supreme commander but not by a huge amount. The rest of the games would be no less playable :)

Hi, I am looking at this laptop:

Product Description: HP EliteBook 6930p, Core 2 Duo P8600 2.4 GHz, 14.1" TFT
    Weight: 5.1 lbs
Platform Technology: Intel Centrino with vPro Technology
    Processor: Intel Core 2 Duo P8600 / 2.4 GHz ( Dual-Core )
Cache Memory: 3 MB, L2 cache
Hard Drive: 160 GB, Serial ATA-300, 7200 rpm
Optical Storage: DVD±RW (+R DL) / DVD-RAM, internal with LightScribe Technology
    Display: 14.1" TFT 1440 x 900 ( WXGA+ )
Graphics Controller: ATI Mobility Radeon HD 3450, 256 MB
Operating System: Microsoft Windows Vista Business / XP Professional downgrade

And I am planning on gaming a little bit on it, just WoW and CounterStrike: Source. I currently play on a Mobile Intel GMA X3100 and WoW runs 'ok' at full native resolution (1280x800) and medium-low settings with usually about 20-40 fps, 10 in really denselty active situations, and up to 70-100 in enclosed spaces.

What kinda framrates can I expect with the Mobility Radeon HD3450 in native 1440x900 resolution?

    Thanks!

The game could scale up to quad core cpu's and sli setup's yet(even though that's unlikely) so yeah you might have to turn the res down if you want to raise all the settings to high.

Your card will perform similarly to the 3470 *here*(slightly slower)
    You should be able to play wow(wotlk) on medium settings @ 1280 x 800 and cs:s maxed @ 1280 x 800

Ah, ok, thank you, so I should expect to see at least 30 fps in native moderate settings in WoW, I am hoping.. Thanks! I can at least get 20-40 in most situations in native res with low settings with my Inten GMA X3100 so I am really hoping the dedicated GPU helps out with the higher resolution (1440x900 vs 1280x800), and nets me a more playable experience...the comments in that thread re: WoW were kind of vague so I'm still a litte worried :S

If im not mistaken the 3470 is better then an 8400m gs so it should run better then my M1330. I run at 1280 x 720 ( personal Pref instead of 800 ) all medium inluding shadows and get anywhere from 30 - 60 fps with an average of 40

How do you recon this laptop will be for gaming?

    Dell Studio XPS 1340
    Vista Home Premium 64 Bit
    Intel Core 2 Duo P8600, 2.4GHz, 1066MHz FSB, 3MB L2 Cache
Nvidia GeForce 9500M Hybrid SLI (i.e., 9400M in power saving mode, 9400M + 9200M SLI in performance mode)
    4GB DDR3 1067MHz RAM
    1280x800 Screen

I'll be wanting to play some new games like Team Fortress 2, Left 4 Dead, maybe World of Warcraft and Dawn of War 2; along with some older games like Max Payne, Max Payne 2, Counter Strike Source, Half Life 2 and Doom 3.

tf2 and l4d will run at med high at native, wow should run on high, but expect all of them to get choppy during heavy scenes.
max payne series, css, hl2 and doom3 should max out at native, all with some aa and af except doom 3.

    Pure: Low - Medium @ 1280 x 800
    FSX: Low - Medium @ 1280 x 800
    Grid: Low - Medium @ 1024 x 768
    il2 1946: Med - High @ 1280 x 800
CMR Dirt: Maybe on the lowest(try the demo first if there is one)

I thought the 3700+ was an athalon 64 dual core
Anyway those are 2 processor intensive games so:
TF2: Low - Medium(low shaders and textures and no hdr/bloom)
    L4D: Low - Medium

Does hybrid sli really work that well  Or did you think he had a 9500m G/GS?

    Yes on medium settings.

How do you guys think CoD4 would run on:
    Nvidia 9600m GT
    Intel P8400 (2.26ghz)
    3gb RAM

max resolution:1680x1050 (what res would i need to drop down to run it as smooth as possibly, and what would i put the settings at if i wanted to play on 1680x1050?)

Posting this to aid my search for a GPU in a laptop which will meet my measly requirements.

I'm buying a laptop soon as cheap as I can (probably a dell, not sure yet) and it will have this spec:

2ghz intel core 2 duo processor
    3gb of ram
    running vista

I'm just after what these graphics cards would run these games at? (as I'll be taking the laptop with me on trips etc....for some light gaming, and leave my heavy stuff to my desktop when back home):

    HD 3200
    HD 3450
    HD 3650

    Geforce 8400 GT
    Geforce 8600 GT

These are the games I'll want to play on it:
Red alert 3 (and all previous command and conquers)
    Battle for middle earth 2
    The Dawn of War games
And possibly Company of heroes (but can live without this one)

Also some of the older FPS's like the original call of duty, black hawk down etc....

I'll want to play each of these games at low to medium settings at either 800x600 or 1024x768
As I can live without the highest graphical details until I get home from being away, I just want to be able to play the above titles at the above settings.

So can you please recommend a card from above that I should look out for that will perform this simple task, that is dedicated, and how it would perform with the Red Alert3 and the other commmand and conquers?
(I presume red alert 2 will fly on any of whats about now lol)

I'm guessing the 3450 would be the min I should go for, but not sure which is the best budget option for playing the above games at at least min-med graphics.
Remembering company of heroes is optional

    Thanks

    tris

    Hey guys,

I just recently bought a Studio XPS 16. Bad timing with the new 4000 series cards coming out and possibly going into those models, I know. It was shipped the day that I found out about that. Oh well. Such is life.

Anyways, I was wondering what kind of performance I can expect with this thing on some of the newer games. And even some slightly older ones. Specifically I'm looking to play STALKER Shadow of Chernobyl, and America's Army (whatever version they are on now). Possibly the new CoD: WaW as well, maybe DoW:II.

Just some personal experience or opinions would be great.

    Intel® Core™ 2 Duo P8600 (3MB cache/2.40GHz/1066Mhz FSB)
    4GB Dual Channel DDR3 SDRAM at 1067MHz
    ATI Mobility RADEON® HD 3670 - 512MB
320GB 7200 RPM SATA Hard Drive
    64-bit Vista

    Thanks a bunch

The Studio XPS 16 is reasonably powerfull, it can play most games out there, probably crysis as well, dont worry the 512 mb card will do fine.

They'll all run but the cards aren't very powerful. Stay on your native resolution and keep settings medium. Lower where necessary.

Anyone knows how good the HD4570 is? I'm considering the new Dell Studio 1555, but I'm not sure how good the graphics card is for modern games. Will it be enough to run new blizzard games like sc2 and diablo3? How would it run new (but not very intensive) games? I'm not picky for high settings. Medium settings and medium resolution would be fine. Or would I need to fork out more for a HD3670 or a 9600GT to play decently?

The 4570 is about on par with a 9600 GS and I believe it is a tad stronger than the 3670. But I also believe that it eats less power. I would expect you would be very easily able to run diablo 3 and sc2 but sc2 should be more cpu dependent. You will be able to run all current games out fairly decently. Dont expect max but you should be fine with that GPU :)
I have a 2600 on this laptop and I can run all modern games decently (crysis being relative) and what you plan on getting is a lot stronger, so no worries :)

if you are sure you want to game at those settings, the hd 3450 will suffice. but you won't be playing any future games, not even near future ones.

I'll not be interested in playing any furture games on it only the ones I have and older, I'll explain :)

I'm pushing a little for as much information as I possibly can, as I don't understand anything about the graphics/light gaming side of a laptop.

The games I want to play are not that power hungry I dont think, and I'll only want to play them at 800x600 (1024x768 if possible) resolution.
I'll also only require to play them at their low graphics settings, as I will play them at full whack at home on my main system.

I'm not after playing Crysis or any graphicly intense FPS's, the only FPS's I'll be interested in playing on it are the older ones, I leave the more recent ones to my pc and xbox 360.

The only games that I'll be playing on it with the highest requirement are Red Alert 3 and Dawn of War 2, and I'll only want to play them at low settings and resolution (800x600 min I expect).

I'm mainly after playing my RTS's whilst I'm away, and will only want to play them at the low settings, if I can get away with medium then great, but it doesn't matter if I can't.

The rest of the time it will be for wireless net use at a hotspot (for browseing and email), and watching my ripped to take away SD DVDs and movie files.
(as I dont fancy taking a horde of discs with me that wont be insured, but my laptop will be under my insurance)

I have now seen a few laptops that I like, the studio range being my fave style and a couple more that I have seen on my travels, and my aim now is to find out if these particualr cards will live up to my needs:
Presuming these are all dedicated? I think they are.

    HD 3450
    HD 3650

    nvidia 8400
    nvidia 8600m gt
    nvidia 9300M GS

    These are all coupled with:
    3gb ram
t3200 (or higher up to t6400) intel core 2 duo rated at either 2.0ghz or 2.1ghz - depending on the one I go for.
    vista home premium

So enough to fill the requirements of all the games I want to play, and suit everything else down to the ground.

So would any of these five do what I require?

Heres the games I'd most likely to play:

Basically these are the games I want to be able to play on one (and their requirements, hold your breath):
    DAWN OF WAR

    Minimum system requirements:
1.4 GHz Intel Pentium III or AMD Athlon XP processor
    256 MB RAM

    AND OLDER

After this question has been answered as mentioned earlier:

So would any of these five do what I require?

I'll reveal the list of laptops I'm looking at, with the studio at the top of my list and a reasonably priced 18.4" one too:thumbsup:
(though I may find the 18.4 a little too big, I'll have another look at it tomorrow)

Thanks again for all the info, advice and help, it has been very enlightening so far, and I look forward to more very soon:grin:

If so, I was wondering what kind of FPS you get in common games and on what settings? I'm trying to figure out if there's something wrong with mine... it doesn't really run TF2 at 40fps on 1400x900

TF2 is processor dependant(well more-so than other games)

    List your full specs.

I have a 9650m GT, which is the same thing as the 8700, but with a die shrink.

I haven't tried TF2, but Left 4 Dead runs at 40 FPS at all the highest settings, 1280x800, 16x AF, and 4X AA

I have a 7300 GT and it's able to run Crysis even on low settings. The 9300M GS should have roughly the same power.

I believe the 9300m gs is a 128-bit bus, which makes it quite a bit more powerful than the 8400m...

thats pointless, 64bit bus, ddr2 memory. you can can only use upto 150mb anyways. the extra 300mb or so is just pointless marketing. Still the card is good enough to run almost anything on low. even crysis (800x600 low)

    4096MB 800MHz Dual Channel DDR2 SDRAM [2x2048]

If you don't have Wrath of the Lich King or play in 16-person groups then no reason to see why the game can't be set to high detail (no shadows). If you do either of the above scenarios set to medium-high (no shadows, no AA) and you should be fine.

I'd say 1280x800, mostly if not all high settings.

    I have WotLK.

Currently I don't play in any raids over 5, but this might progress upto 25 man (might...). I was hoping to play the game at 1440 x 900.

Do you think the laptop would be able to cope with most settings maxed out except shadows?

At 1440x900 you can have a mixture of medium and high settings (no AA or shadows).

Looking to see if the new Sony Z-series refresh will play WoW: WotlK at native resolution with any kind of decent frame rate.

    4GB 1066 RAM
    320GB 7200 RPM drive

If your native resolution 1280x800 then you can expect decent framerates on low-medium to medium settings.
