Even though x700 is a decent graphics card, the 3650 scored much more on 3dMark 05.(Not sure in 06 but it should be higher)

I'm not in the know about 3D modeling and architecture (CAD-like) applications, but will an Intel X4500M be able to run those softwares?

How well do you suppose a solo 8700M GT can handle the following games (not at all, lower settings, default/moderate settings, higher settings, max settings):

    Warcraft 3
    Half-Life 2/Counter-Strike: Source
    BioShock
Crysis (don't actually own this one, just curious)

And any guesses on how it would handle future games like these:
    BioShock 2
    Starcraft 2
    Aion: Tower of Eternity
    Doom 4
    Half-Life 2: Episode Three

I'm asking because I'm probably going to buy an XPS M1730, and I'm considering going the cheaper route with a solo 8700M GT and just replacing it when I need to with dual 8800M GTX or something from eBay, which I'm hoping will be more affordable by the time I'd need it to play games with decent settings. Right now the most intensive game I have is BioShock. I don't really buy many PC games compared to console games.

    its a mid-range (128-bit memory interface) videocard.

so it will be able to handle those games at medium (some high) settings with average resolutions.

please refer to the GPU Guide for more info.

why get a notebook with a 8700M GT when you can get a system with a high-end (256-bit memory interface) videocard for ~$1000.

Thanks for the link. Pretty cool list, hadn't seen it before.

To answer your question...because that would not be pleasing to me.

    if you are wondering....

here are my current "bang for the buck" high-end gaming notebook picks....
    (with 256-bit memory interface videocards)

    For 17"+
    *($1500 budget and below)*
    - Sager NP5793 (Clevo M570RU) .... its hot right now since Sager is making it fully loaded with 9800M GTS and even Blu-Ray drive to liquidate its stock so that they can focus on the new (but slightly more expensive) NP5797.... Clevo M570TU/ETU.
    - Gateway P FX with 9800M GTS is another good choice but does not have better build quality and cooling than the Clevo M570RU.
    - MSI GT725 .... fully loaded 17" with ATI HD 4850
    *($1600 to $2000)*
    - Clevo M570ETU (aka. Sager NP5797) .... new model with Montevina, quad-core and choice of GTX 280M or 9800M GTS/GT/GTX or Quadro 2700M
    - Arima W840 DI (aka. OCZ Whitebook, Alîenware m17, etc...) .... new 17" dual ATI 3870, quad-core and dual HDD
    *($2000+ budget)*
    - ASUS W90Vp .... 18.4" fully loaded with ATI HD 4870 X2 .... processor could be better (like a quad-core)
    - Clevo D901C (aka. Sager NP9262) .... 17" with single/dual 9800M GTS/GT/GTX or Quadro 2700M/3700M, uses desktop quad-core CPUs, three internal HDDs, and the best notebook cooling design to date.

    For 15"
    *(sub-$1400 budget)*
    - ASUS G50VT .... 15.6" with 9800M GS (budget high-end card)
    - MSI GT627 .... 15.4" with 9800M GS (budget high-end card)
<strike>- Toshîba F55 .... 15.4" with 9700M GTS (still considered high end on the bottom rung of the ladder of high-end cards)</strike> ... discontinued
..... and the rest of the mid-range notebooks with Nvidia 9600M/9650M, ATI 3600/3650, etc..
    *($1400+ budget)*
    - Clevo M860TU (aka. Sager NP8662) .... fastest 15.4" gaming notebook with Centrino 2 quad-core CPU support... and Nvidia 9800M GTS / GTX 260M / Quadro 2700M

Alîenware (except for M17 which is re-branded Arima) and .Dell does not make the list (mainly for the high-end systems), they are quite outdated and configuration upgrades are usually overpriced.

This is a bang for the buck list... if you want to pay for aesthetics and lights, then look elsewhere.

    * please read the Clevo Guide for further information about Clevo and their international vendors.

    ________________
as you can see the .M1730 does not go on the list... but the dual 9800M GT base setup is pretty good.... until you try to do the over-priced upgrade options

For the price of the cheapest M1730 config, with solo 8700M GT, you can have this M570ETU, with GTX 280M and faster processor.

    Food for thought.

I don't really trust 3dMark scores. It is to me just a benchmark and don't really reflect the real potential of the graphic card when it comes to real gaming. I remember scoring less points in 3dMark on my X700 than on my friend's X1400 but when it comes to gaming, my card actually beat his in almost all aspects. I will try installing Company of Heroes when I get off work today and see how it goes.

I actually use an 8700M, I play Half Life 2 and BioShock maxed (in DX10 for BioShock) at 1440 X 900. Crysis Warhead I play at gamer level only post processing at enthusiast at 1280 X 800 in DX 10. Can't hazard a guess at the others, as technology is gaming is advancing and all 8 series cards are showing their age. I am replacing this system soon, just waiting for Windows 7.

But... I would not buy an 8700m now if I were you, you can get a lot better, my next system will be Sager and I would recommend going the same route. Dell is nice, but still a bit over priced, you can find better deals elsewhere.

If you're talking about professional modelling applications which require more than just a powerful CPU, then don't bother with the X4500m since any GPU features that the program will require will likely overwhelm what little power the X4500m has to offer.

Do dual 8800M GTX fit in an XPS M1730? I don't have much experience, but I don't recall the XPS having lots of GPU upgrades available for it >.> Because if it doesn't work out, the OP's plan would be moot.

Probably not, but you can try the demo that's currently out to get a feel of what settings you're likely to manage if you can get the game to run in the first place.

Yes, they do, and that's what I decided to go for. With the rate I purchase and play games for PC, I see no reason for that to not last me at least 2 years if not 4, even if 8 series is a couple years old.

Thanks for the responses, and sorry for not posting that topic in the most appropriate place.

For empire 1280 x 800 all medium unit sizes small. You will see ocaisonal slowdowns but thats due to the game being glitchy

I'm not certain with your processor, but I'm fairly confident you will not be able to run it, as L4D requires at least a dual core, and that is not a dual core.

Left 4 Dead, Call of Duty 4/5, Red Alert III, Far Cry II, Company of Heroes, America's Amry 3?

For bang for a buck, would this bee a great deal? or should i spend a little more money to upgrade?

The NP8662 will be FAR faster with the GTX 260M graphics card, allowing you to run that game on high settings. There's really no comparison between it and the GT 130M. A fast CPU will also help a lot in that game, so keep that in mind also.

Definitely go with the NP8662. For the same money, you'll be gaming in a much higher tier of performance.
    - The 130M will crawl at such a resolution. Even at 1280x720, you won't be that well off
    - The GTX 260M is 2.5-3x faster than the GT 130M

I just ordered a HP DV7-1273cl from Costco (refurbished). The system specs are:
    Intel® Core™ 2 Duo Processor T6400 (2.0GHz)
    2MB L2 cache
    800MHz front side bus
4GB DDR2 SDRAM (both slots occupied)
    512MB NVIDIA® GeForce® 9600M GT graphics

The only game I want to play is NWN2 which I could never get to run well on my AMD 3400+ with an ATI X800XL. Am I in for a dissapointment or will it run ok?

You won't have any problems running it on this system, start on medium settings and raise them until performance is intolerable.

    Vista Home Premium 32 Bit

    Intel Core 2 Duo @ 2.00 GHz, 2MB L2 Cache
    3GB RAM
    Intel Media Accelerator 4500MHD

I know the card isn't great, but I really only want to play City of Heroes and World of Warcraft.
I'm currently running it @ medium-low, 1024x760 on my temporary computer @~15-25 fps:

    Intel Pentium 4 3.00 GHz
    512 RAM
    Intel 82945G Express Chipset

I ran WoW @ medium-low settings 1024x768 at 20-30 fps on the same specs as above.

    No way a Go 7400 runs TF2, High settings @ 1280x800, and averages 40-60fps. That's just impossible.

Hey guys, would really appreciate some feedback. These are my specs:

Intel Celeron Dual Core T1600 processor.
    1.66GHz processor speed.
    2GB DDR2 RAM.
    Intel GMA 4500M graphics.

My question is can I run Titan Quest on this? If not could you recommend any other games that you think might run. RPGs if possible.

Games I have already tried out and are running fine:

    Devil may cry 3
    Painkiller
    World of warcraft

Hey guys, new here but thought this would be the best place to ask considering the success of the thread.

    Intel® Core™ 2 Duo P8600 (2.20GHz/880Mhz FSB/3MB cache)
    4 GB DDR2
256MB ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4330
Bright, glossy widescreen 15.6 WLED display (1366x76

I'm wondering if I can play... Left 4 Dead, The Witcher, Vampire The Masquerade: Bloodlines, NWN (all of them), and some other newer titles...

For the 4500 integrated chipset I doubt Titan Quest will run acceptably. RPG recommendations from me would be the Diablo series and the 1st Sacred.
