Just curious, with the laptop in my signature.

What should I be running via AA/AF in nVidia control panel and in Steam games such as CS:S, DoD:S, and TF2 for the best performance/graphics ratio.

I run them both maxed out at 1440x900 16AA/16AF in nvidia control panel (enhance application) and in source the same, all high with reflect world, but my FPS varies from 30-100+. I would like to stay above 60.

I've played around, but nothing has really made too much of a change to benefit it. :(

It should be able to play, but probably at best medium settings or a little bit higher.

I would say that 1942 and 2 should be okay but anything newer than that will have some problems. Battlefield Heroes can probably run well too.

Hello everyone, it'S probably been said in older post, to be honest i haven't read them^^ but I think this website could help you out finding whether you can or cannot run a game :)

here is the link : http://www.systemrequirementslab.com/referrer/srtest

You just choose your game, and click the "can you run it ?" button.

    Happy gaming

yeh it does, but the point of this thread is to find out if you can run the game before you buy a pc.. (as you require the actual pc you intend to run it on to use sys. req. lab) and also to find out what settings/res you can play a game at.. as the requirements lab is handy but it does not give you specifics

I was just trying to help those who already have the pc.. just think it's faster going there than writing on a forum and wait for an answer... which is usually pretty fast but still ;) sure thing is they don't say at what settings you can run it though.

Yes I have it plugged in, set at High Performance and from what I can tell my graphics card is on. When I enter the Nvidia Control Panel I have it set at (Let the 3D application decide) and my SLI is enabled. Is there something I'm not doing here?

I checked my drivers and they are all current and I downloaded all the updates for the game (Crysis). Still with all backdrops and anti aliasing turned off and all my settings at low I'm only getting 10 FPS.

I've read about in game tweeks that can be done, is it imperative to do these to improve the performance and quality? Also I keep getting told that my computer (specs below) should run the game well so I must be missing something? Thanks again in advance.

You should not have to do the ingame tweaks just to get decent framerates.. especially on your setup. The tweaks are usually for people who want to squeeze out those last couple of frames. I just dont understand how it cant be running well.. have you tried all of the different resolutions? (it may not make any difference, but could be worth a try)

I'd like to be able to play WoW, and AoE3, along with QuakeLive and possibly some more RTS such as Warcraft 3. Along with Sims 3. Would it cope?

I'm planning to upgrade the RAM to 4GB, if that would make much difference. I need to see if I can find the version with the P8600. It will be running Vista Home Premium, but I will upgrade to Windows 7 Home Premium ASAP.

AoE3, Warcraft 3, and WoW should run okay. You're probably not going to be able to use the best settings or anything on WoW though.

For Sims 3, I'm leaning towards medium-low. Don't really know about QuakeLive requirements though. You're biggest problems here is the 105M which is pretty weak. CPU will make a little difference but not that much and I don't think RAM will do much gaming wise unless you're like alt-tabbing out of it really frequently.

Well the 9400m is not exactly a gaming graphics card.. you would be better going for the 3870. However.. the 15.4 screen with a 1920x1200 res??? I think you would find this incredibly annoying to work with.. I have a 1920x1200 res on my screen and i sometimes have to increase the text size on some web pages if i want to read it without putting my eyes on the screen.

As for the processors, there isnt going to be a noticeable difference in day-to-day usage.. although you may scrape a few extra frames in more cpu intensive games.

You will be able to run more games on the 15.4 notebook.. however you will not be able to run games like crysis at the native res (1920x1200) with high settings. Unreal tournament and left 4 dead are less demanding games so you should be able to play them at medium/high (maybe not at native res, but probably at 1680x1050). Fallout 3 will run at medium settings depending on the resolution.. and i am not sure about the sys. requirements for gears of war.

Bear in mind that the Dell Studio 14z is not designed to be a gaming laptop.. more of a 'multimedia' laptop.. so watching movies and listening to music... hence why it has the 9400.

    Hope this helps

Thanks. Here are the Sys Reqs for Gears:
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS for GEARS OF WAR

OS: Windows Vista or Windows XP
Processor : 2.4+ GHz Intel; 2.0+ Ghz AMD
    RAM : 1 GB
Hard Drive : 12 GB free hard drive space
Video Card : NVIDIA GeForce 6600, ATI X700 equivalent or above

    Also, would i be better going a 1440 x 900 LCD (720p) res?

The 3870 would be able to run gears of war. Also, if you are looking to get a 14 or 15inch notebook, a lower res will be better for games, as you will be able to run games at your native resolution. How much are you looking to spend?

    somewhere around 1300/1400. not too much. i'm a student, so it's gaming/school/budget. but if i go with the 720p, i can afford to up the processor to Intel® Core™ 2 Duo T8300 2.4GHz (3MB Cache 800MHz FSB).
Also, if it's important, the second setup is on an Alienware Area-51® m15x System

Sorry I keep giving you more and more questions, but overall, is this setup better still?

    PROCESSOR Intel® Core™ 2 Duo P7350 (3MB cache/2.16GHz/1066Mhz FSB)
    MONITOR Edge-to-Edge HD+ Widescreen 15.6 inch WLED LCD (1600x900)
MEMORY 4GB Dual Channel DDR3 SDRAM at 1067MHz (2 Dimms)
    GRAPHICS CARD ATI Mobility RADEON™ HD 4670 – 1GB

Please let me know ASAP as I am looking to purchase one of the last two mentioned setups by end of business day today. (The Studio 14z is no longer on my list.)

    Hi Timmy.

It's really hard to get a laptop for gaming AND school, because a gaming computer is usually very heavy.

    I would suggest you buy a gaming-desktop and a light laptop :)

But if you really want a gaming laptop, I would choose the last one. The P7350 is powerful and same goes to ATI RADEON HD 4670.

The MSI GT627 (and 628 when it is released) is a great compromise. It's the size and weight of a regular 15.4" (like a dell inspiron), which puts it a full pound lighter than a G50/51 and Sager 8662. It also can get over 3 hours on a 9-cell battery. All that with a 256 bit GPU. If Timmy can find the 218US version still around, it would be perfect.

I am considering a couple of notebooks. I am planning to play Sims 3 and possibly the odd much less graphically intensive game. The main purpose of the laptop isn't gaming though. Will each of these handle Sims 3? Will settings need to be lowered or will they play at normal levels?

    The Levono Thinkpad T400:
    CPU: Intel Core 2 Duo processor P8600 (2.40GHz 1066MHz 3MBL2)
GPU: ATI Mobility Radeon 3470 with 256MB
    RAM: 2 GB PC3-8500 DDR3 (2 DIMM)
Display: 14.1 WXGA TFT w/LED BL (a native resolution wasn't given)

    the HP DV4:
    CPU: Intel Core 2 Duo; T6500 (2.10 GHz, 2MB L2 Cache, 800MHz FSB)
GPU: Intel Graphics Media Accelerator 4500 MHD (shared) with up to 1759MB total available graphics memory.
    RAM: 4096 MB (2 x 2048 MB) DDR2 (Upgradable to 8192 MB)
    Display: 14.1" WXGA High-Definition(8) HP BrightView Widescreen Display (1280 x 800)

    and the HP DV5:
CPU: Intel Core 2 Duo; T6400 (2.00 GHz, 2 MB L2 Cache, 800 MHz FSB)
GPU: Intel Graphics Media Accelerator 4500 MHD (shared) with up to 1759MB total available graphics memory.
    RAM: 4096 MB (2 x 2048 MB) DDR2 (Upgradable to 8192 MB)
    Display: 15.4" WXGA High-Definition HP BrightView Widescreen Display (1280 x 800)

I know that the Lenovo's graphics are better than the HPs, but if I only plan on playing Sims 3, will the HPs work? How much better are the Lenovo's graphics? I hadn't planned on getting into such a cost for a laptop, I'd originally bought a netbook. But, if I'm going to do this, might as well do it right.

Bonus question: Is there anything even cheaper in the Lenovo line that will handle Sims 3?

Hey there, you should be able to run Sims 3 on all these, the models with the Intel Graphics Media Accelerator 4500 MHD should handle this game on medium settings, the one with the HD 3470 should run it on medium-high settings in Lenovo's native resolution

So, after much deliberation, I've near decided to go with a Sager 2098.
Pretty sure that I can run what I want on it, but I figure I should double check with you guys.

Can i run Gears of War, Fallout 3, Unreal Tournament 3 and Left for Dead (along with most 360 ports)? Also, how well could I run Crysis?

    Here's my setup:

You'll have no problem running most of those on high settings. Crysis medium/high...that is if the 4650 is the DDR3 version, which I see it is.

er... probably a stupid question, I'm not sure... I've tried to run F.E.A.R. on my Inspiron 1520, and I can play fine up until (I don't know if you all have played F.E.A.R. or not) after he wakes up from being knocked unconscious by Paxton Fettel. I'll walk down the hall I came up before being knocked out, and it'll crash and shut itself down... Is this maybe a problem with my graphics card, or something? Is it maybe not sufficient for gaming? I don't really know anything about gaming graphics cards at all...

Quick note: I CAN play Diablo 2 with no lag problems (usually). Don't know if this'll help in any diagnosis or not.

    Here are my specs:
    Inspiron 1520
    Windows Vista Home Premium 32-bit
    120 GB HDD (5400 RPM)
    3 GB DDR2 RAM
    Core 2 Duo T7250 (2MB Cache/2.0GHz/800Mhz FSB)
Mobile Intel(R) 965 Express Chipset Family

That sounds more of a game software issue than a hardware one.

They should do fine. Sims 3 probably won't be on really high settings though

Sims 3 should run very good at high/med settings not sure about AA, since that usually decreases frame rates.

Apologies for posting again, decided the 13" wasn't for me.

    Now thinking a Studio 15:

    CPU: Intel® Core™ 2 Duo Processor P8600 (2.40Ghz, 3MB, 1066MHz)
OS: Vista SP1, would upgrade to 7 ASAP.
    LCD: 15.6in at 1366x768
    RAM: 4096MB 800MHz Dual Channel DDR2 SDRAM
Video: 512MB ATI Mobility RADEON HD 4570

Same games, so Warcraft 3, WoW, AoE3, and Sims 3. If it coulddd, then Empire: Total War would be nice.

    Thank you very much :)

All of them, high settings, no problem. (maybe you'll get some lag on ultra)

I am willing to buy Dell studio 1555 with the following specs.

    Intel® Core™ 2 Duo Processor T6500 (2.10GHz/ 800 FSB/ 2MB Cache)
    4GB (2X2GB) DDR2 SDRAM Memory
512MB ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4570- Its DDR 2 I think

So can this specs run it in Medium or Low Quality ?
I think it can run. But I want someone to confirm it.

It can probably run the game, but I would only hope for running it on low. I am doubtful as to good performance on medium settings.
