I get weird **** with crysis no matter what driver.

Im standing in this place when I first load the game --------- fps 35

    I walk around a bit ----------- fps 28-30

I go back to same place as beggining ------------ FPS 20

    I walk around a bit --------------------------- fps 10-12

After a few min fps back to normal, after a few min the cycle repeats it self....this is very irritating.

Make an extra shortcut on your desktop

This is the directory and fill in -dx9 after the link
    "D:\Program Files\Electronic Arts\Crytek\Crysis SP Demo\Bin32\Crysis.exe" -dx9

    tip for ingame:
open console ("²" button) and type r_displayinfo=1 to see your fps, memory in use,....

I believe the e_view_dist_ratio_vegetation variable controls how far the vegetation is drawn, but I'm not sure. There's not much knowledge about all the variables available in the sys_spec_ObjectDetail.cfg file (.cfg files are in folder ..\Crysis SP Demo\Game\Config\CVarGroups), so you just have to try them out for yourself.

DO NOT make alterations to the original .cfg files! Make a new file called System.cfg and place it under your Crysis Demo directory (usually ..\Crysis SP Demo\). A good start is to use the basic setting (=low/med/high) variable group, which you have set the corresponding in-game setting (textures, shadows, shaders etc.) to (meaning 1=low, 2=med, 3=high), as a base (=copy it's contents to the System.cfg file) and start customizing it (=changing values) or adding new variables from the lower or higher setting groups (depending on what you want to do: higher performance vs. quality). Note that in those .cfg files the upmost variables are the default values, which are then edited by the setting group (again 1=low, 2=med, 3=high) and those not edited are ran as such.

For example: I made this System.cfg when I tried to get the Demo run at acceptable framerates: http://forum.notebookreview.com/showpost.php?p=2621838&postcount=363

It's wise to look at the setting group variables and compare which is changed between low, med or high or even between default (=very high), so you can see which actually affect performance and quality when you change the setting in-game (=the system settings -> advanced menu in the game).

when u say tweaks i assume u mean u have over clocked your vieo card.... because from what i'v been reading you cant play it with shaders on high on a 8600mgt

    QFT.

Try to play around with the setting using the autoexec.cfg or system.cfg, and in case anything ****ed up, just delete that customized cfg file.

Don't know if anyone has mentioned this but this is one pretty good guide

Well I take it back..........running in DX9 mode makes a big difference, but my drivers are extremely old so perhaps I can get better performance yet.

Not true.... you can run high, it's just VERY high that you can't run. even though the 8600gt can run high shaders, FPS suck.... even at a low resolution. On another note, at 1024x768 I get less than 30 fps most of the time even with all of the settings on medium. Is there something wrong here? the graphical quality is absolutely amazing on medium, and I would rather not have to turn the shaders or shadows down.

hey guys just started playing today crysis and wow!!!!
im actually surprised i can run it at 20-30 frames on 1024x768 everything medium, except water high and shaders/ shadows on low.
I managed to activate shadows ingame at low settings by tweaking the shadows.cfg file and there is basically no performance hit.

Im running 163.75s, havent bothered to update because I play more TF2... Anyway, on 1200X800 with all medium settings (Dx9) I get a steady 20fps and the lowest I ever see is 17ish. Anyone know if the 169s give better performance in other games too?

Normally I play it at 1280x800 with everything on 'high'
except: postprocessing/ shaders and shadows, they are on 'medium'
and it play very well with an average framrate of 18-20 :D

Yes I tweaked the rays of light in, as you can see on that picture (the rays are coming through the gun's viewfinder). My overclock is 660 core, 680 memory. My settings (from the top of my head):

    Resolution: 1280*800 (no AA)
    Textures: high
    Shadows: medium
    Shader Quality: medium
    Volumetric Light: high
    Post-processing: medium
All the rest: high (I think)

Is the demo really playable with these settings? Could you download fraps and set it to take automatically a screenshot like every 10 seconds, so we can see your fps in different firefight scenes, especially with multiple enemies around...

    I just said this:

So Cinner plays at the same resolution and settings ;)
(I want to notice you on the 18-20 framerate)

    On a 8600M GT DDR2 with:
Core Clock 600Mhz/ Shader Clock 1200Mhz/Memory Clock 475Mhz

Without OC'ing it it will be about 12-15 frames a second :)

It is. But would it be playable for you? Only you would know by playing it yourself I guess. You can see in my screenshot the current framerate was 21.5 fps, but it's usually a little higher. I don't want to go to the trouble of installing fraps right now, but I'll take a screenshot during a firefight later.

Well, of course not, but as you stated it's a personal preference. I'm currently working on it, to get it run decently (~30fps) at resolution 1280x800, without having to sacrifice too much image quality (=shaders atleast at medium etc.). There are over 1500_ variables, which many have several value options, so this game is immensely tweakable. And yes, ~30fps is the target for me, but I would take ~25fps in heavy firefights or action scenes. It's actually suprisingly smooth at 20fps compared to other similar type games, but still that's not enough for me... But now I'm off topic. I'll post some pics if I succeed.

Yes thats due to motion blur. Motion blur makes the framerates seem better than they are in terms of what our eyes percieve. Our eyes have motion blur which behaves similarly.

WOW - with an 8600M GT?! I just tried it on my Asus G1S 8600M GT, 1024x768, DX9, no AA and everything on medium except shaders and shadows on low, and got low 20s fps. It didn't look so great to me either - lots of jaggies. It makes me feel spoiled playing HL2 Ep 1 and F.E.A.R on native res where jaggies are simply not visible.

What drivers are you using? Perhaps that's the big difference - my current ones are 163.67. I notice 163.75 are the latest on laptopvideo2go - so where are these 165.xx drivers I see mention of? EDIT - nvm, I see they ARE on laptopvideo2go, but not in the list of drivers if you click on the "Win Vista 32 bit" list; you have to look in the news area for them.

Yes but his fps are 2-3 if you look at the fraps.

1280 x 1024 everything, high, shaders medium and shadows looks great to me. Low 20 fps with my gpu overclocked.

8600GT DDR2 here...and it plays worse than any game I've tried on any PC. I didn't expect High settings, but this is horrible beyond belief:

Low everything, 1280x800 resolution: 3-4 FPS. Just Opera, IE, Fraps, Taskman, and a few Explorer windows in the background - nothing using GPU or CPU. When I had Medium settings, the intro videos even played uber-slow (though audio was fine).

But other programs have played well. Company of Heroes played fine at max, as did Age of Empires III and Halo. I know those are much less demanding games, but if they run great at max, shouldn't Crysis at least play halfway decently at minimum?

Perhaps some of this is drivers...I'm using the default Dell ones, IDK what version. If someone PMs me about how to find that out and how to get the most recent ones (preferably official ones), that'd be great...I imagine any responses in here will get lost in the midst of replies, and I'm already confused by all the version numbers of drivers.

But with such atrocious performance, I think I'll be sticking with other games.

edit: Just ran 3dmark06 and got 3261 3dmarks, which is if anything better than expected for the DDR2 version.

That is pretty low. I am using Driver 169.01, I can still achieve over 10 fps on medium setting but never over 20 fps. It's still consider unpleasant experience in playing because hardly able to aim the enemy.
I am Acer 5920 user, using 8600GT ddr2 as well.

    Mines even worse

I start the game and I get fps of about 28 all good, as I play the game the fps just gradually goes down till 3-4 fps. Stays at 3-4 fps for ages then mounts back up to 28 for a bit then back down to 3-4...Its retarded

Are you sure there's no intrusive apps/processes running in the background?
