I would hope it does it even runs fluidly on mine with everything at max and on but no aa or fsaa on 1280x1024. Great that developers are becoming more content with graphics.

The FEAR games never did scar me, DOOM 3 made me poop my pants a few times. This is more of a startle the hell out of you game. The one part that did it for me was Alma grabbing me as I walked out of the theater.

So I pre-orderd the game today at my local EB Games, and they gave me a small book. Assuming it was something for pre-ordering, I didn't open it til I got home.

Just read it, and it turns out that it's an extremely detailed back story on FEAR! Very interesting stuff. Explained the origins of Alma, how she grew up, what her states were at what ages. Explained all the characters in detail, and showed some of the weapons in FEAR 2.

I just played the demo... HOLY CRAP that was awesome.

I feel the immersion is done very well for an FPS (the climbing animations especially done well) and that the power of the weapons you hold feel just right. And the ending sequence was off the hook! The game didn't really scare me that much, rather than make me wonder about the origin of the poltergeists running around (I did finish Dead Space though, so maybe that's why haha).

I need to go pick up FEAR 1 :p

Here is a hint for people with mid-range cards.

Turn shadows off completely. It doesn't affect the game (who notices shadows?) and it will give you a free 10+ fps boost.

Leave HDR on though, it's essential in my opinion. :D

I was getting a solid 25-30 FPS with everything on max (except AA/AF and shadows on med)

Are you serious? You're saying to disable shadows on a game that's all about atmosphere to create fear, and saying that HDR is a necessity?

I'd say it's the exact opposite. Take HDR off, put shadows on low/medium.

Really now? about 90% of the time Alma shows up, you see her shadow walking by first, and/or only ever see her shadow passing by, and never actually see her. You'll also almost always see a soldier's shadow before you ever see them, many times they intentionally place scene lighting so that their shadows will be cast on a wall that your about to approach. Believe me, you'll miss ALOT if the shadows aren't on. You won't miss anything, or any scripted event if HDR is left off, the lighting will just look flat, and less dark/bright

Oh right, my mistake then. :D

I always prefer to run my games at 40-50fps because I like the smoothness.

But I guess I'll turn the shadows back on, since I now know that they are so important for the atmosphere. I guess I can live with 35+ fps...

i had a constant 30 fps on all max settings except: motion blur off (helped fps a LOT and motion blur annoys me anyways), no FSAA, and trilinear texture filtering. I felt that a lower resolution (1280x720) was fine considering that HDR on made everything glow slightly, therefore masking the jagged edges on most objects and my laptop took less of a performance hit than if i had FSAA x2 on or 1440x900 resolution.

As for the demo itself, it was freaking awesome. The weapons felt GREAT and its freakier than FEAR 1 in my opinion. The atmosphere is just creepier. I'm glad they added the ability to use the sites on your gun to aim this time around.

But you cant actually aim through the sites though, like, Call of Duty 4 for example. Your view and reticule just get closer and smaller.

I just played it again without using the power armor at the end, and I have to say... most intense firefight ever. They give you a ton of missile launchers to deal with the mechs, and shock grenades, but it's still hard as hell with snipers and rocket clones on the rooftops while fighting the power armors.

Definitely recommend trying it without using the power armor, it's good fun xD. Especially on hard mode.

I'm so disappointed. This is not the FEAR I was expecting. For some reason I get a "Gears" feeling out of it now... I guess the weapons and blood are doing that for me.

Yeah the blood is way over the top. It's comical, and it has no place in a game that's supposed to be taken so seriously. Every shot causes enough blood loss to kill two men.

I know. It doesn't even appear to be the correct color pallet...

And the PDA idea, that's pretty yucky too. I would've rather had the very serious look of the last one. I appreciate the fact they actually made the new areas not so bland and overused, but what they did do... I just don't know.

Great FEAR 2 trailer for anyone who has not played the original, as it quickly brings you up to speed on the events of FEAR 1. Otherwise there's not much to it for gameplay action though.

Is the first game available for download anywhere? I'd consider buying it digitally.

I hooked my notebook up to the 67" Samsung and played at 1080p, and I must say, the game looked amazing.

Ya I bet the lack of digital download has something to do with the "relationship" between Monolith and Timegate. Too bad. But I see it around a lot in stores so there shouldn't be too much trouble picking it up as a Gold edition.

Yeah, Steam should be offering it soon (Hence why IMO I think D2D stopped offering it- as I remember them selling it before) though if you can't wait, the Multiplayer game is totally free and available for download. FEAR Combat IIRC.

Gold edition is your best bet in stores, though don't bother playing the expansion packs not done by Monolith, they aren't really "FEAR".

Just did a bit of reading and back in 2004 Valve sued Sierra for illegal distribution of the Half-Life games. I am guessing this is probably one reason why we don't see FEAR on Steam as their relationship is tarnished. And now that Activision is taking over Vivendi (and Vivendi now owns Sierra), it seems Sierra is under pressure to justify its existence. All in all it seems the world of the original FEAR publisher is very messy. Until the smoke clears don't hold your breath. Just go buy it in store. ;)

Yeah, was in a Gamestop yesterday and picked up a copy of FEAR Platinum for $19.99, which includes the original and all the expansion packs... was excited to see it, and have been having a ball with FEAR 1 since! That game with headphones and at midnight with lights out was crazy last night ha. Still looks great too. Highly recommend picking it up if ya find a copy.

Figure once I beat this, FEAR 2 here I come!

EDIT: And also, the above post was correct, you do not look down the sites in FEAR 1 like you do in FEAR 2.... zooms in, but not down the sites... still fun though

The only reason I was hesitating buying it in a store was that I hate using DVDs to install games xD. I'd much rather install and run off my hard drive since its so much faster.

I guess if its the only option, I'll go pick it up in store.

I've played the original and the two original expansions and enjoyed all three. I've only played the demo of the 2nd so far but from the looks of it, I will wait until the game is $20 or below. I'm disappointed that it is a port of a console game whereas the original was designed for PC and later ported to consoles, ironically what some console gamers complained about.

I'm also disappointed that none of the protagonists from the original seem to be here right? No Point Man, no Jin Sun-Kwon, no Douglas Holiday, no Rowdy Betters, we never find out what the hell happened to Jankowski early in the first game, no Norton Mapes.

You as the Point Man had the slo-mo reflex powers because you were the son of Alma, whereas they are just given to a Delta Force operative by surgery in the sequel and yet the Delta Force was extremely pathetic in FEAR 1 and the expansions.

Its so strange that the original developers were behind this yet it feels like another unofficial expansion. I really wanted to find out what really happens to the main protagonists of the original game after Alma crashes the helicopter (you do find out in Extraction Point).

Is Paxtol Fetell in the game also? I also liked the Replica soldiers from the original, some of my favorite FPS enemies with all their chatter, swearing, seeming very human whereas they barely talked in the demo and I assume they are pretty boring in the sequel as well.

Sorry for all the complaining, it seems as though the sequel is disappointing compared to the original which is one of my favorite FPSs. :(
