If you want better shadows and still have DX11 features ensure you have DX9 on in the game settings and MSAALevel="2" AlphaToCoverage="2" SSAOLevel="6" (HDAO) in the GamerProfile.XML

The game does use FXAA and it is equivalent to Ultra SMAA

Also, to turn off Motion Blur (and gain a lot of FPS) set postfx to Medium. Setting shadows to High will let you gain even more FPS with no visual loss

Everything maxed but DX9 (with HDAO and enchanced alpha to coverage), post fx med, shadows high, fxaa and msaa at 2, average of 60FPS here. Even the folks at Neogaf agree that DX9 looks better and has further draw distance

Perfect, thanks very much for this!

But why do you use MSAA and FXAA at the same time? Seems like a waste

hahaha thats field of view, not render distance. It shouldnt matter to what you set it but i have mine on 90, because i am used to it from battlefield 3.

Is the gpu getting really hot for anyone else? mine is at about 90 degrees, no matter what fan speed, kinda weird...

Yes! 92 degrees here!!! I get the same temps as I do with Furmark! Even Crysis hasn't ever pushed my GPU to those extremes. I'm worried :(

anyway my temps are back to normal for now but the frames have dropped aswell, so its kinda annoying. Does anyone else get low frames(30) in the first village next to the first radio tower?

I just wanted to let everyone know: I changed back to the 306.97 WHQL release, because Aftermath is coming out tomorrow and I've had no luck with the betas on battlefield. I tried out Far Cry 3 just for fun, to see if it would run 38% worse....
and guess what it actually runs BETTER, places where i would get ~50-55 frames on MEDIUM, with the latest beta, I now get 60+, never below, with the latest WHQL on VERY HIGH. I dont get it... the game still lags when nearing villages but hey it a big improvement over the supposedly better beta. gpu usage is still low, so there is definitely room for improvement I think.

On 12.8 CCC i got 45FPS everything maxed HDAO and MSAA off now i have 12.11 and i get 68-75FPS with fraps on thats with MSAA X2 dont notice a big difference between 2,4 and 8 to warrant a drop in FPS with 8x goes down to 50. i was surprised at how much i enjoyed the game when people say its a mixture of skyrim, uncharted and assassins creed they are right on the money.

mines about the same at mid 70s for gpu and low 80s for cpu. not changed any settings but default is mainly set to ultra. no stutter or lag that ive noticed. i dont give a monkeys about fraps as long as i can play the game.
one day i will set everything to ultra and see what happens.

    Hey all,
Really enjoying this game so far and it gets better the more you progress into it.
Just a fyi, I was getting quite a bit of stuttering and low fps but that has all been fixed..
    How?
Well I found a config file on steam forums and copied it into my far cry 3 folder under users, and then I installed amd catalyst 12.11beta 11 and wowza it works so smoothly now shooting is great no more stuttering and the graphics are superb.
I will post the config file for others if they so choose to use it but it plays so smooth now... :)
Disappointed that ubisoft have such poor video option in setup menu and you have to add options to config file to fine tune it..

Better in some ways, worse in others.

Remember Crysis was PC exclusive (before they ported it to consoles).

Far Cry 3 is console game ported to PC with significant enhancements.

Crysis was a couple years ahead of its time, but it is definitely showing its age. Textures and character models are ugly, and it's obviously missing all the dx11 eye candy of 2012's AAA games. Far Cry 3 is really pushing this gen's graphical potential. It will look incredible with a high-res texture mod.

Except the tech underneath Crysis is better than Far Cry 3. I find it hard to believe Far Cry 3 is a better looking game. Sure it may have better textures, but the lighting, shadows, and post-processing, highly doubt it. Dunia is just a highly modified CryEngine 1 turned into a console priority engine. It doesn't even use modern PC CPUs properly.

And so far all the screenshots I've seen look very dated to me, they look really similar to Far Cry 1. It really looks to me it's got higher res textures, other than that, looks to me Ubisoft continues to fail at developing engines. Looks to me they failed and are unable to improve upon what CryTek did nearly a decade ago, that's really sad.

Some of the screenshots, I could be fooled into thinking they were right out of Far Cry 1. The water, the foliage, the colors, the moronic amount of bloom, it's all CryEngine 1 and Far Cry 1.
    - The only reason I'm interested in this game is because the campaign story supposedly good, but then it's from the same morons who think COD is innovative and story is non-linear.
    - Reviewers are giving the game 100/100? That's saying the game is perfect. And considering every forum, whether it's AMD or Nvidia biased is has a bunch of threads complaining about FC3 issues... that tells me it's very far from perfect. These sites are terrible. No integrity whatsoever.

Anyone having weird boxy shadows? I'm running it maxed out on 12.11 beta11, framerate is good and everything runs well, except for these odd rectangular shadows that move with my view as I look/walk around. I've tried messing with settings in-game but haven't figured it out yet. Any ideas?

To all the NVIDIA peeoples - any change in 310.70 drivers vs the 310.64 drivers in this game? Downloading now, will check in a bit.

I noticed them on DX9 in Badtown. Changing to DX11 fixed the issue for me. Also brought down framerate sadly. Would of preferred to stick with DX9 ideally.

According to Guru3D, the GTX 680 and the HD 7970 get about 52-55 FPS at 1920*1200. Both these GPU's are 300W monster supercomputers. Both of these are capable of rendering games at HD4K and then downsampling that to 1920 for pristine visuals (the best possible AA, without blurring). I'm sorry, how can this game get a 100/100.

Am I the only one who is disgusted by someone suggesting a game with appalling performance issues is perfect? Perfect 100/100 overall score means it's perfect for performance, technology and optimization. It seems there was little optimization here. I haven't played the game yet, but I would guess 9/10 for story. 8/10 for visuals since it looks hardly unchanged from a game made nearly 10 years ago. And a 5/10 for technical. That's 73/100.

And for me, that's a VERY GOOD game 73/100. No game should get a 10/10 for story/plot. 10/10 would entail: astounding dialogue, pristine story structure, supremely unique and original, if not original, it's simply done better than anything preceding it, and absolutely unforgettable. 10/10 visuals would mean there is nothing more you want. Me? I see enormous amounts of bloom and lens flare. That is a massive flaw, bloom and lens flare are used to give a cinematic feel, and more than anything, it's a way to hide the flaws. You wouldn't need stupid amounts of bloom if you had nothing to hide. 10/10 technical would mean the game runs at optimal performance, optimized flawlessly for PC. And well this is an Ubisoft game and it is 100% guaranteed a console game.

Anyone else appalled by the recent reviews of games? It's not just Far Cry 3. This is getting out of hand.

the thing with reviewers is that they dont care how the game runs an a mobile card with serious driver flaws (7970M). They probably test this stuff with sli 680's. Also visuals imho do deserve 9,5/10, what game today looks better?

But I get your point, 100/100 overall isnt realistic

Reviews aren't science, they represent a reviewer's subjective evaluation summarized into a score. No game is "perfect," yet reviewers give games perfect scores all the time. Is there something wrong with it? Absolutely not. It's just a number meant to give the reader a rough idea of how much the reviewer enjoyed the game. Nothing more. People shouldn't take them seriously enough to get upset about whether a game scored too high or too little.

I disagree about FC3 looks nearly 10 years old. It's much better looking than anything released before the last couple of years. Once a high-res texture pack is released it will be nearly on par with Crysis 2 and BF3.

Indeed it is. Regarding the whole graphics debate - I don't care about engines and textures' size comparisons, the game is beautiful artistically and that's all there is to it. Looking at a sunset beyond the trees, the waterfalls, the grass and mountains, it's awe inspiring.

But who cares about that? Getting a close encounter with a tiger from behind and fighting with it face to face, swimming to get to an undersea flower only to actually notice the shadow of a bull shark swimming right above you, speeding with a quadbike through the jungle, hitting a dune, doing two barrel rolls then landing right next to a river and then land near a river and keep on speeding ahead or attacking a baddies camp from a distance only to hear shouts as a huge bear goes in and kills every last man in there, winning the camp for you only to chomp on your buddies as they come to secure the camp, it's has so many neat moments that help me remember what gaming is all about.

That being said, it does get a bit repetitive eventually, especially if you power-play and treat it like a true RPG and then get most of the relevant skills/gear and weapons with their suitable customizations. Don't do that. It's not really Skyrim, so just go ahead, cause a lot of mayhem and try to have fun.
