This has become really annoying, I've tried so many fixes and nothing seems to work. Ever since the Friday of launch week, I've been getting consistent crashes anywhere from 10 minutes into play and a few hours in. The launcher.log file keeps noting exiting with error code 255. Searching the web reveals a quite a few people posting into the R* support pages with the same issue but so far no response from R* and no one knowing the exact cause of the issue. Quite a few ideas have been thrown around but none have worked. Including the following, running in windowed vs fullscreen, running in the different versions of DirectX, reinstalling the game, etc.

killkenny1 Too weird to live, too rare to die.
It was sort of a joke, but for some people (like me) it's a harsh truth/reality.
A lot of people run their games well, but I never had luck with CD Project Red games. They always run like crap on my machines. TW1 was OK after EE on my old desktop, but unfortunately TW2 even after EE is still unplayable on my lappy.
Oh well, it looks like I'll have to suck it in and play GTA5 instead... Oh, the horror! NOT!
Sorry for a bit of off-topic. -

My home All-in-one (AIO) Acer desktop has a GT 240M, and I have to say: I feel you. It struggled with COD: BO1 at medium settings, I could barely hit 30-35 FPS. I almost never use it for gaming. Same case goes for my sister's GT 525M, which I overclocked to eke a bit more performance out of it.
After getting my Clevo, I can finally play all the older games at max settings and at 60 FPS constantly, but I always look back at the good old days of lag and choppy gameplay. You should really consider getting the W230SS (not the SD) from a reseller - it's going for pretty cheap now, and is a versatile, powerful workhorse of a laptop. If you've got slightly deeper pockets then take a look at the Clevo P650 series.
Same here: sorry for off-topic.
P.S. I just noticed your sig. You flight sim too? Are you on VATSIM? -
Okay I solved it, go to "Settings" tab, then "Display" and lower "Safezone Size" setting which size is good for you. I lower it to the very left (means lowest) and the subtitles are much more readable now.Mr Najsman likes this.

I really wish there was a way to tone down the language and constant swearing in this game. The voice actors did a decent job as it is but for some reason the writers feel that starting and ending a sentence with the s and f and n word makes it all better. I wouldn't mind it here or there or to emphasize things going bad or what have you for the plot, but its over done its annoying for me and I feel it takes away from some of the realism.
I live in California and even in the worst neighborhoods I wouldn't hear such constant profanity. Of course damage control will tell me to just lower the voice volume but then its lessens the experience and the text is really small. Even the pedestrians walk around and curse more. It'll be great having a censored option for the voices that mutes the foul language if you select the option. Would be great to get that in one of the next patches. Ill be sure to drop that suggestion on the Rockstar forum as well.Last edited: Apr 22, 2015Ionising_Radiation likes this. -
So, just to be clear, those aren't mine. Maybe it seemed like I posted my own work.
-
That's because it doesn't matter as I've said all along. People whining and crying about 3GB and 4GB vs 6GB and 8GB. The amount of vRAM that the game requires for such details is on the order of 3GB, but the actual amount used for processing is likely on the order of 1.5GB. There is likely some swapping going on between system RAM and vRAM.
Check your system RAM usage with settings that don't exceed 2GB vRAM and with it running at the listed 3GB. You should see the increase in system RAM usage go up by about 1GB. -
I feel ya. I didn't have any crashes with the 2nd update, but the latest one I seem to get crashes pretty regularly while in a vehicle. Nothing more infuriating than doing the "drive home" on a mission only to have it crash when you are two feet away and then have to replay the thing because you can't load the in-mission checkpoint.
-
I had the crashing problem during the first weekend. I would complete mission and while driving back-BAM game crash. I did the following went back to 350.05 driver, and I play the campaign off -line. I'm able to play on average 4-5hrs without a crash. This is no guarantee, because sometimes I can forget to play offline and I'm playing online for hours with no problems. It all seems to be hit or miss

I read many forums and i dont really understand why they put 2gb vram as recommended requirements. Some people say that they put 2gb vram cause its optimized also for old gpu's which have ddr3,gddr3 which is a lot slower than gddr5 and that 2gb gddr5 is more than enough to run on max if you card allows it(besides maybe advance graphic options) but in my case im wondering my i get framerate drops after some period of playing(after 20-30minutes).Framerate drops by a few frames and recovers immediately?i checked today and after playing 30-35minutes and several framerate drops i exit the game and gpu-z was showing 1961mb as max vram used(thats after a lot of raining, reflections during night which is probably vram intensive).I know i use more vram than i have(2350mb of 2047) but that doesnt seems be vram related or im wrong?cause i saw watch dogs going above 2000mb and i didnt get those framerate dips -
It could be CPU speed/clock related. That has alot to do with minimum fps.

Amen to this. If the game is an accurate depiction of American culture, no wonder everyone hates America. I sincerely hope this isn't the case in reality. The disrespect that Jimmy has for his father, Michael is strange - I'd never swear in front of my parents, let alone talk about genitalia and masturbation. The whole game is full of dysfunctional and swear-happy people, I feel sorry for Rockstar Games.MichaelKnight4Christ likes this. -
Yeah what would you know about it? Ever been to the hood? There are people who actually talk like that. So what. Grow up and get out more. There's a whole world beyond your bubble.
But seriously, it's a goddamn game. And not just any game but GTA, which is designed to be irreverent. The protagonists are caricatures/stereotypes. Your first mistake was assuming that hip-hop/rap/thug/gangsta culture as portrayed in the media is an accurate depiction of American culture as a whole.
I'd love to see your reaction playing something like Postal.
Everyone hates America? I thought it was just Al-Qaeda. They hate us cuz they anus.Last edited: Apr 22, 2015 -

thanks i will try.I would turn turboo boost on cause i always leave it off cause its overheating my notebook without any gains.I dont think thats that but will give a try for half hour even though im sure my cpu would be around 90C after that time haha
but half hour cant harm. They are a lot of forum threads mentioning similar problems with top end desktops gpu's..probably a patch is needed

nVidia has a GTA V optimization guide out.
tl;dr Grass quality = #1 performance killer, ultra quality is even more taxing than 8x MSAA. (although arguably I imagine this would be a very localized effect, so debatable about its absolute performance hit)
Regardless, simply going by raw percentages (from my own eyeballing + math
), top 4 performance killers in order of performance hit:
#1 Grass quality
#2 AA
#3 Extended distance scaling
#4 Reflection quality -

Woah ho, calm down Mr Ruffled Feathers! Man, one wrong word about the U.S. and there's bound to be someone like you jumping to its rescue. As though the U.S. needs saving.
Ok, let's go through this sloooowly, lest you jump the gun (both literally and figuratively).
I don't know anything about it. I wasn't making an assumption either. Please re-read my original post - I did say I hope the U.S. wasn't really like how it was portrayed in the game. No, I haven't been to the hood, neither have I even been to the U.S. (although I'd like to visit some day). I do know there's a whole world beyond where I live, thanks very much. I don't need you to tell me that. I live in the midst of ten developing countries, each of which I've seen personally at least once.
Your second paragraph has been addressed above. Also, I understand that almost all games are caricatures and stereotypes, as are TV sitcoms. But they do portray reality to a certain extent, too. Where else would they get material for the game?
Thirdly, yes, I've played Postal, and to be honest, it does make me wonder what the hell the developers, story writers and producers were thinking when they made the game. Same goes for Postal 2. Both are giant 'WTF' games.
And yes, many Europeans, East Asians and Middle Easterners don't like the U.S. because it pokes its nose into everything and screws countries up when it leaves. Sometimes, the U.S. government (and its people) have to understand that liberal democracy isn't for everyone, and neither is it the best system of governance.
No need to swear either or reference genitalia. You just enhance my negative opinion of the U.S. and do yourself no credit.
Al-Qaeda is a direct product of American intervention (ahem, interference) in the Middle East. If the U.S. hadn't been so hell-bent on stopping the spread of communism back in the '80s as well as killing Saddam Hussein then maybe, just maybe, 11/9 wouldn't have happened. ISIS might not exist. -
Done making assumptions yet?
-
The problem with making generalizations about the US, is that it's such a vast country and each region has its own unique thing and village idiots.

Well I think the game does a stellar job at highlighting the stupidity of pop culture. From the posters of people duckfacing to Idol castings. The language might be offensive to some but as we say in Australia "harden the #@$a up" or, just don't subject yourself to playing it

This I agree with. I was supposed to transport this celebrity to Vinewood after I "apprehended" her assailants in the city and I very quickly regretted it - she sounded like a very typical spoilt rich white kid.
I quote: 'I can't imagine being a normal kid - ugh - doing my own hair and making my own food? Ugh, that's, like, soooo not me.'
At least Franklin is very down-to-earth. I like his character the best. -
Exactly. Nobody holding a gun to your head forcing you to play the game. All the *****ing in this thread...soft people nowadays.
-
It reminds me of how people started getting all PC about shooters with dismemberment. I had to sit through 10 years of lame ragdols until finally we're seeing a comeback.
KF2 FTW
-
They don't call it PC gaming for nothing, you know...
Now we know why low violence/profanity/sexuality cuts of games exist in some countries. It's not just the politicians requiring it; the population itself can't handle such shocking media!
Last edited: Apr 23, 2015 -
Exactly. I live in California but I'm sure life is very different in the South. Generalization just doesn't work here.
-
It doesn't work here or there or anywhere. Cali has over 1/10th the U.S. population and is probably the most diverse state geographically and demographically. The American melting pot/salad bowl paradigm is due to our diversity.
-
Soldier of Fortune man that's all I gotta say. Sure I played for the gore, but the game itself wasn't half bad. Second one was even better, just don't play the abomination of the third one called "SoF: Payback". It's a ****ty ****ty game.
I live in the Bay Area, probably one of the most liberal parts of US, and I still had a very interesting encounter with a religious zealot. I don't use that term lightly, but this man had "I love Jesus" tattos on both his arms, and let's just say at one point the phrase "What has your Buddha done for you?" was uttered.
(the context was he was trying to say how Jesus is the almighty savior while Buddha just, I dunno, sits there and not do stuff?
)
But yeah all kinds of people exist.TBoneSan likes this. -
Yeah.. I loved the SoF's.. bought and played the 3rd one for about 2 minutes.

LOL was that just out of the blue or do you give off a Buddhist vibe?
That sounds so San Francisco ish. Drive across the bridge and it's like, "WELCOME TO OAKLAND NIGGA!" -
I understand that generalization isn't usually a good idea but what I am trying to say is that people in Mississpi will generally share different values to people in Cal.
-
Haha religious arguments are some of the worst arguments you can have. I always avoid them.
-
It's even more random than you think. Religion was brought up because I mentioned I lived in Canada for 7 years, and he was all like "Canada eh? Oh hey I hear they're very lax about religion there, and don't take it seriously at all."
Then after a bit of lecturing on the importance of religion, he looked at me and said "Look I'm assuming you're a Buddhist, what has your Buddha done for you?" Said assumption was made because I'm of Asian descent.
So I guess in one statement, he managed to combine ignorance with stereotyping with (religious) bigotry. Well done, 10/10.
Btw I just smiled and nodded the whole way through, because I know from personal experience the fastest way to get these kinds of people to stop yapping is to just go along with them and they'll stop talking eventually.
Just to be clear, I don't have anything against religion, it's just not for me personally. I mean I live with a very conservative Christian roommate who goes to church every Sunday, and we're on great terms. I guess my personal belief best matches that described by apatheism, with a dash of spirituality thrown in.
OK enough with the OT...Last edited: Apr 23, 2015octiceps likes this. -

American vs Asian culture, right here. Bam.
I've got no problems with dismemberment or blood or whatnot. I was immunised after watching Saw V when I was ten and had nightmares for a couple of days. Heck, I played GTA Vice and Liberty City Stories at around the same age too. Neither do I mind sex. But excessive swearing just gets on my nerves. You don't have to insert five in every sentence, such that half the sentence or more is just swearing and cursing. I cuss too, but honestly, Rockstar overdid it.Last edited: Apr 23, 2015 -

Ok, let's get back on topic. A few issues I noticed several people have with the game:
- The shadow maps are highest resolution in a square about 10m x 10m centred on the player-character. They have a very abrupt change in resolution after that.
- Right-clicking during certain parts of the game (like the Jewel Store heist) crashes the game.
- Nvidia PCSS shadows are strangely blocky with 'High' shadow quality settings.

Can any other SLI users attest to the funky frame rate?

Anyone else have trouble with flying? Can't fly well at all. It doesn't help not having proper controls for it
Currently I use numbers 2,3 for up and down and 1 for bank left and 4 for bank right. This is the numbers above the letters.
What do other people with no number pad use for flying controls? -
Xbox One Controller for vehicles, Mouse/Keyboard for on foot.

I plan to get a joystick for all programs involving flying (BF4, GTA V, X-Plane 10). Meanwhile, I'm trying not to fly planes in GTA V. The controls are terrible - I wish they have an option to let us use mice, a lá War Thunder. -
There needs to be a setting where you can default 1st person on foot and 3rd person in car. I'm always switching like a goof.. Getting annoying.

Yes. If you watch your util all the time, you'll see it goes up and down crazily, sometimes hitting 50% or less (meaning one single card might even be better). It's been my experience since launch and everybody except Totalbiscuit has been so "OMG IT SO OPTIMIZED CUZ MY 4 YEAR OLD 'PUTER PLAYS IT" that they don't realize how far you hit a wall graphically when you have a true top-end system.
