Thanks for you quick reply. 170% faster would be awesome!

I dont wanna stay with my 170 EM anymore because the new models are much lighter/portable and the gpu power of the 675MX isnt the best anymore. ;)

Definitely get more than 1 stick of RAM though (even if it is 8GB total), because dual channel is quite a bit more efficient than single channel, and by using 2 identical sticks of RAM (e.g 8GBx2) then you'll get improved CPU performance.

That's another reason why I was hesitant to get the P35X v3-CF2 (1x8GB) instead of the P35X v3-CF1 (2X8GB). Sourcing extra compatible RAM will cost me quite a bit, effectively negating a large part of the price differential between these two configurations (£1800 vs £1600)! Let's just assume that this RAM stick would be compatible, making the total in the system up to 16GB (2x8GB) - that's £74 extra on top of the base £1600 pricing! The cost difference between the CF1 and CF2 is only £200; meaning, the CF1 adds twice the SSD storage, an i7-4860HQ and a 3K screen for just effectively £126 more; the pricing is madness, madness I tells ya! :(

EDIT: one step further - this mSATA SSD 128GB drive to make up for the halving of storage space in the CF2 - now we're looking at a further £65 extra. So £139 extra for the RAM upgrade and SSD upgrade that brings the CF2 on par with the CF1 model. So what do we get for £61 extra? Well; an i7-4860HQ and a 3K display! See what I mean? The pricing is all over the place with these two models. Either CF1 is great value or CF2 is bad value. MSI GT72 has very similar specs to the CF1 model and is £2000 - so I think that proves that CF1 is the great value model while CF2 is poor value in comparison.

That darn 1080p matte display had better be worth it!

    Great results to you both.
With those GTX 980M temps being so cool, I can't help but wonder why Nvidia is holding back?
I mean they could easily have added 1 or 2 more SMMs to both GTX 980M and GTX 970M and they would still run around 680M temps probably.
Oh well, I blame AMD for this.

Did you go with GT72 instead of GS60 HTWingNut? Or is it just a review the unit?
Let me know when you are even close to 68FPS average in Battlefield 4, 64man, everything maxed out ;)

GTX 980M is nothing short but amazing. Even the GTX 970M runs circles around your GTX 780M:

    Battlefield 4:
    55FPS vs 40FPS

    Metro 2033:
    53FPS vs 37FPS

    BioShock:
    73FPS vs 47FPS

    Etc etc
This with vastly better temperatures than the 780M. 980M will be a good deal faster than this. Not sure why you don't think it is impressive...

Yep, I agree, but still no reason to get a 3K screen that you will game at lower than native resolution and having it look like rubbish each time you game because of it! (The CPU is fine, so that doesn't really factor, and how much SSD storage space does a person need, boot & a few games, then an HDD alongside which I guess the base system already has). Upgrade the RAM though.

See, this is why I need you to be the voice of reason to prevent me from turning to the dark side and getting the 3K model. I will regret it in terms of gaming later on - and likely be annoyed by glossy reflections. Must make sacrifices for the greater good!

How does one go about upgrading RAM in notebooks? - I've never needed to before. I'm assuming I could just buy a 8GB DDR3L model that runs at the exact same frequencies as the stick that comes already inside the laptop - and simply plug it in? Or does it have to be identical brands for both RAM sticks?

You might be able to save some money by just buying one broadly matching stick of RAM, rather than replacing it with two identical sticks. Most of the time a second stick of RAM that is not identical in speed and timings will make the system run at the speed of the slowest RAM stick. I'd advise adding a stick with the same performance specs as the other stick though to avoid potential incompatibility - so you want same voltage, same frequency, same memory timings, and also same size in Gigabytes. Some laptops have service manuals (downloadable from manufacturer website) that describes how to do stuff like replacing CPU/HDD/RAM/etc. Have a look to see how easy it is to add another stick of RAM to the laptop.

Or as an enhanced upgrade option, you could buy a matching pair of high performance RAM which has high speed and lower memory timings, but you'd need to check it was compatible first.

(I have mixed brands of RAM in my laptop, I've flashed them all to the same modified overclocked BIOS (is that what it's called for RAM?), but they used to work just fine when they were at stock, they had different memory timings, but the motherboard was able to make them run automatically at the timings of the slowest stick - might not be the same for the motherboard in your laptop though).

My 780M runs BF4 at 69C (maybe 71C max), usually 67C-70C. FPS is 53-56 average, up to 65~, minimum probably around 30.

Crysis 3 is a different story. FPS is 30-32 FPS average, up to 41 FPS, minimum probably around 23.

I said it wasn't as impressive as I had expected. That doesn't mean I'm not impressed by it. I was expecting 780/780Ti performance.

I also think that 4710HQ is horrible for gaming with a 980M, and it's holding the GPU back. And as mentioned earlier, drivers are not optimized yet. So, FPS should improve by a good 10% when that happens. I'll remain optimistic, as I said I would.

I really don't care about the price. I want it, I need it!!!

Will it be a 17inch SLI notebook to fight Clevo and Aorus? Or maybe its a 18 inch SLI notebook to take up the fight against Alienware 18?

    So exiting

Doesn't sound like there is any chance of the Aorus showing its face this side of Xmas either: Overclockers UK Forums - View Single Post - aorus x3 review Come on Alienware...!

Laptops are very personal devices, this means more information is needed to say what machine may be better than another.

If you check out the "what notebook should I buy?" sub forum on here there is a template so you can give the appropriate information.

Except for games that don't use SLI (for me that would be X-Plane 10 flight sim for example). And with the negative of needing a little extra care with drivers to avoid micro-stutters and other SLI oddities that I have been reading about since agonizing over the choice of single v SLI waaay back in 2007 and they never seem to go away for all people and all games. And the fact that you need a bigger notebook to fit and properly cool 2 cards rather than just 1, so you're stuck with various 'monster' chassis...

I'm more interested in real world performance. Benchmarks are great for bragging rights, but why spend thousands to brag? I want to game.

I think with more optimized drivers the 980M will be much better. Also, those crap HQ processors aren't helping anyone.

It doesn't matter what you do to that HQ. It's obsolete from day one. As Mr. Fox said, these systems are "disposable."

Don't know what all this talk of an i7-4710HQ bottlenecking 980M sli, these discussions have been had before - it's all about the frames per second you're gonna be gaming at, it's not directly related to whether it's sli or not. CPU usage is a function of frames per second of the game engine, not the GPU in use. If you're gaming at 60Hz (target of 60fps), then any i7 CPU from Sandy bridge & up is fine. If you want to game at 120Hz (120fps), then that's when you need to wack in a top of the range CPU, and even then the performance capability difference of the bottom of the rung i7 CPU and the top of the range extreme CPU is only about 30% or so best case when you take cooling factors into account and everything, so even then it's not gonna make a massive difference.

For me, the important part of CPU performance is going to be the ability of the CPU to run at full turbo ratios without any time limit constraints & with good cooling - I think this is what Meaker was getting at when he said he was gonna show you what an opened up 4710HQ can do: probably involving a laptop chassis with good cooling, use of Intel XTU and Throttlestop combined would be my guess (which happens to be what I've done with my CPU to allow full Turbo the whole time). Extreme and upper tier i7 CPU's are overrated and overpriced in the mobile sector.

I game on a 120Hz monitor. So... It matters. Once you go 120Hz, you'll never go back.

I'd never buy an SLI system (mobile or desktop) and get a standard 1080p 60Hz monitor, lol. You went big with the specs, go big with the screen!

Yeah, I'd love a 120Hz screen (I've overclocked mine to 78Hz and would like more!). Extreme CPU only matters for over 60hz gaming in most cases though - that's my point. If you're only gaming at 60fps, even with 980M sli, then any i7 CPU is perfectly fine (except a few rare games - I remember Planetside & BF4 being examples).

I still say it's less of an impact than most people understand. The 4710HQ goes up to 3.3GHz with a +200MHz ability to overclock. The 4810MQ goes up to 3.6GHz with a +400MHz ability to OC. Stock for stock you're not going to see something like 10+fps improvements in almost any game out there.

That being said, socketed is always better as you can upgrade in the future and such, and of course for a heavy gamer or power user, a 4710MQ's speeds ain't desirable. But it's not like it's going to totally invalidate 980M SLI. I would love 980Ms and the EM heatsinks for CPU/Slave GPU and at LEAST a 4910MQ though. Would do some wonders with THAT.

Alright, can any super clever folks out there decipher whether the 980M will indeed output the same levels of heat as the 870M? I've been reading around and it appears that the 980M is operating under load at a mere ~0.9V, while the 870M operates at ~1.0V under load. Enough to make a difference perhaps?

Anyone who has tested the same model of notebook (such as the MSI GT72 for example) with the 870M and then the 980M and seen a difference in temperatures output under load?

You can't compare different chips voltages. Especially such a different architecture. The 970m is more frugal than the 870m.

Thanks for the info about cpu bottleneckong guys. Difference between 4810mq and 4710mq is $35 for NP9377 so I am going to go with that. And maybe overclock to 4.0ghz and see what it does for Crysis 3. Trying to buy a 120hz screen on ebay but this reseller keeps relisting it because no one wants it and consequently the price is so low. I might just say screw him because he has relisted twice already... I heard you can overclock some screens to 100+ hertz. If this ebay seller cannot be reasonable I just hope my stock screen can oc well. I heard IPS screens overclock to 120-144hz; well some do or a lot do. I just heard something like that
Is that 4810mq overclock to 4.0ghz on all 4 cores or two or three or what?

OCing a screen to 100Hz is a rarity and you should not expect it. If you CAN you're lucky.

We already got info on such comparison between GTX 970M and GTX 870M - Xentar712 has side-by-side two versions of MSI GS60:

But no info on GTX 980M vs GTX 870M in the same chassis in some other notebooks yet.

Though GTX 980M is not going to be cooler / less power hungry than GTX 970M, that's for sure (expected TDP difference is extra 20 watts for GTX 980M vs GTX 970M). So we can expect less than 10 C heat savings with GTX 980M vs GTX 870M (given the same chassis design).
