Supposedly the cooling system has been fixed according to gigabyte and the build has been strengthened, but I wish they were releasing it sooner so that I can make my decision.

why does gaming on a small screen such as 17" matter if its 1080p or 3k? can barely tell the difference except laptop draws more power and runs hotter.

Answered your issues in BLUE. Most laptops have a power supply rated for only about 0-20w above there max load, nothing abnormal on the p35x v3

Don't they just use the same power supply from the 880m version though?

Only if you have the cash to spare. Upgrading can quickly become an obsession, and that "better desktop" could quickly make you go bankrupt. Some days I just feel plain wrong that my "nice laptop" and "better desktop" is worth more than a used Corolla (yeah ok a pretty used one, but still)

I don't get your point, the 880m is more power hungry than the 980m anyway.

That was my point most of those laptops had a 880m version that needed more power, now with the 980m instead they often end up keeping the same power supply so they end up having an extra 20-40w more than is regular. Nothing wrong with that, kind of nice in many ways unless the power brick is a ton larger or something.

The original GT60/70 with 880m and 780m use the regular 180w PSU and they can barely power it, using things like Hybrid power to ensure full performance. GT72 has a 230W PSU so it should have more than enough juice for an overclocked 980m.

Lol yeah, breaking out of the upgrade cycle takes discipline. The industry wants you to go bankrupt, as long as they got the sales they don't care. Hence why I can never advocate spending more on computers than a car. Cars can help you earn money in almost all cases, only select professions earn money from hardware.

I've asked the Gigabyte rep whether the 3K screen is glossy or matte - if it's matte then it'll become more attractive to me. Glossy, not so much - can't stand annoying, distracting reflections now that I've got used to having a matte display!

Need to see some decent 980M 3K benchmarks though. Still probably going to stick with 1080p for that future wiggle room at native res. It's annoying though, as I have no trouble seeing the pixelisation on my current 17.3" 1080p display. 212 PPI would be dreamy...

    I'm so fickle.

The GS60 with the 970m is supported by the 150W PSU.
What can it result while heavy gaming? Battery drain?

Well I just decided to build a quick cheap desktop then sell it early next year before I go to boot camp. It cost me $625. I would probably only loose $100-200 on it when I sell it. Here it is:
    MSI H81M-E34 - $58
    I5-4590 - $190
    CX 500 Watt PSU - $47
    Zotac GTX 970 - $330
And its so small, even the Zotac 970 is mini-ish and there is soo much room in my old big case. For an entire new setup it would cost: $842 with 8gb ram, 1TB HDD and good monitor plus $15 peripherals like keyboard + mouse. With a 120hz monitor like I have it would be around $950 but still under $1000.

GPU temps never go past 76 celcius with hours of gameplay with Crysis 3 max settings, 1x msaa, Get around 42-80 FPS depending on where I am. It has no problem running anything. Assasins Creed Revelations gets a constant 120FPS Max everything including AA. Gonna play that game in 3D since I have soo much headroom. Cpu stays around 60 celcius during gameplay. Monitored it all with afterburner. And omg is it silent when idle and decent when playing games; not that loud.

Yeah its off topic but I am just telling you guys I went with this instead of the $2500 980M SLI. I am just gonna sell it before I go and buy a laptop when pascal and skylake come out. I am gonna need to study anyway so no time for video games after March. And yes 4gbs of ram is plenty for video games; I am running my rig with 5 year old dims clocked @ 1333 mhz, 4gbs and a 5 year old spinning drive that is booting less than 15 secs.

Older version of MSI GS60 Ghost Pro with 3K screen and GTX 870M had max power draw of 168.5 watts and it did indeed cause troubles:

    MSI GS60 Ghost Pro 3K Edition (2PEWi716SR21) Notebook Review - NotebookCheck.net Reviews

Maxwell GTX 970M though is supposed to have about 20 watt less TDP than Kepler GTX 870M. So a newer GS60 model's 150 watt power supply while very tight should be still somehow acceptable (estimated max power draw of 148.5 watts).

Because you need to first find a suitable notebook with SLI. You cant just cram in a new GPU to say the RAM slot in any notebook and suddenly you have SLI

Yeah I really wouldn't use Passmark for comparing graphics cards, it's pretty misleading for that purpose. It's pretty clear that SLI isn't supported from the fact that Titan-Z and R9 295X2 are both below the 780 Ti from that chart.

Everything was set to max on each game and played for at least 20 minutes.

    Shadows of Morder - 88C
    Borderlands presequal - 86C
Vanishing of Ethan Carter - 86C
    Evil Within - 88C

Just to reiterate this is the GS70 with the 3 gig 970m. Plan on using this laptop quite a bit so don't know if I'll be keeping it with those temps.

Wow! Comparing those temps to the benchmarks in the GenTechPC review, yours are about 10C higher. I don't have a good explanation for why that would be, but I understand your hesitation due to the heat.

Should be around 80, maybe a bit higher.

EDIT: According to LinusTechTips, a single 980M averages about 50 on C3 and 970M SLI averages 70~ in C3.

Depends on whether your "max settings" includes AA or not, what kind and how much.

Though if you really want to be future proof I'd go with at least a 4910MQ for CPU.
