    Ah those..

Hehe.. I only want GTA V and MGS V GZ and Phantom Pain.

My SLI will make my Skyrim, MGS Revengeance, Crysis series, Resident Evil smile.

Kinda disappointed that Evil Within does not support it. Although it's not optimized anyway.

MGS and RE are Japanese games, so not much hope. Same with GTA V, because Rockstar.

Your SLI? Your sig says you have CrossFire.

If you're really looking for the best performance per dollar, you can purchase a desktop with a single GTX 980 for half of what you're about to pay. It will outperform the laptop by a good margin and remain much more "future proof" than any laptop will ever be.

Have you considered this? A lot of people about to drop $5k on a gaming laptop think they actually need such a beast of a system because they want portability, but they end up rarely ever taking it anywhere. I've seen this happen dozens of times, even with myself.

All right. Just making sure you at least know what's out there.

It's a beast of a laptop but it will be obsolete in less than 24 months, or at least heading there. Just like every laptop.

Try keeping eye on MSI GS60 GTX 970m lounge:

    http://forum.notebookreview.com/msi/762769-msi-gs60-ghost-pro-970m-owner-s-lounge.html

I was collecting info on 6 GB VRAM GTX 970m version a while ago and it seems currently there are no slim notebooks available with it anywhere (neither MSI GS60 / GS70 nor Gigabyte P34W v3 or P35W v3, even Aorus X7 Pro SLI has just 3 GB VRAM version).

Only large notebooks like MSI GT72 got 6 GB VRAM available right now. I presume MXM GPU production batch got priority over soldered GPU batch, supply seems to short.

There was a brief blip where somebody in US did order one MSI GS60 with 6 GB VRAM, but likely it was still just pre-order, very soon afterwards availability info changed.

From availability ETA on websites and from asking MSI folks from various countries by various people, it looks like US will get 6 GB VRAM versions somehow sooner than Europe: late October - early November in US, late November in Europe.

Yeah nothing wrong with getting one, but as far as future proofing, in 2 years it will be slightly lower performance than that years MSI GT72. In 4 years it will only be on par with a mid-range gaming laptop like a 860m is right now. In 6 years it will be on par with average multimedia laptops.

    @GTO_PAO11
Since according to your signature you already have an Alienware 18, why don't you just upgrade your CPU, and the GPUs to 980m? The prices on them should go down to close to the $650-700 range OEMs are charging over the next month. So figure $600 for a CPU, 1400 for 2x980m and you are spending 2k not 5k.

The only issue I see with that is you won't have much warranty on those 980Ms, so there's some risk there. If you're ok with that, you can grab a brand new OEM 3920XM for about $500 on eBay, and that will rocket past any non-Xtreme edition CPUs and serve you well for at least another 2 years. Wait for 980M prices to come down to <$800, and you could have the performance of a new laptop for only $2000.

This is the cheapest MSI GS60 with GTX 970M model and seller in EU I encountered while doing my searches for 6 GB VRAM versions.

Starting from 1,473 EUR for FHD screen, 8 GB RAM, 3 GB VRAM, 128 GB SSD, 1 TB HDD, AZERTY keyboard, without OS, 1 year warranty:

Ordinateurs portables. Comparer les prix, idealo.fr

I have absolutely no idea how trustworthy those sellers are or if they ship to other countries (star ratings don't look too good, caution is warranted).

If you can go a bit above 1,600 EUR, there are also models in Czech Republic, Slovakia and Poland in 1,600 - 1,700 EUR range:

    MSI GS60 2QE-026CZ od 44 936 KC - Heureka.cz
    MSI GS60 2QE-026CZ od 1 602,73 EUR - Heureka.sk
    MSI GS60 2QE-024XPL - SKAPIEC.pl

It's very unlikely you'll find anything cheaper for MSI GS60 anywhere in Europe, at least not until more FHD screen models will come to EU around end of November. But even then prices will not likely go down much (I would guess max 100 EUR less).

Cheaper prices will be only in US, but then you have to add at least VAT which you will get charged on import (unless you bring in notebook personally, unpacked, plus your warranty status will be messier).

For MSI GS70 I haven't looked for but just try searching the sites I posted - these are comparison shopping aggregators from many shops (if you are lost, Google Translate is your friend, plus xe.com for currency conversions).

This is exactly the reason why I cancelled my 980m order. I decided a 900$ graphics card with zero warranty just wasn't worth it. I'm either going to get a new laptop, build a beast desktop, or just wait for full GM204 release early next year when my factory warranty is gone. Will still have an additional year of coverage through my CC though.

Don't know, doesn't hurt to ask, but most likely not.

I guess a semi-workaround would be to buy a laptop that already has 980M SLI installed and then take out a SquareTrade warranty for the entire unit. But in that situation you might as well just buy from a reputable shop.

For those of you with upgradable laptops, how often do you buy new GPU or CPU?

Would you say you spend less on upgrades over a period of 3-5 years than you would if you were to buy a new laptop?

I upgraded my older GX660 with a 6990m and then with a 7970m. Both times I spent less than $400, and I was able to sell my older 5870m and then 6990m. It made the upgrade relatively cheap IMO, and brought about amazing performance increases.

But $900 is just insane, and I would have to sell my current card. If my $900 card decides to crap out after a month or so of use I would have to buy another and at that point be out almost $1500? No thanks. Again I would have no warranty on that card either. Now granted I have never had a single mobile graphics card fail on me.

I'll just build a nice desktop rig for that $900, and keep my current laptop which is no slouch anyways.

If you buy a card from a retailer like Sager or something, it usually keeps at least a 1 year warranty as a standalone part.

Sure, but I doubt they come with more than 1 year of warranty, so still a no-go.

Also a slight diversion: it's funny how in the desktop world a $1000 GPU is usually viewed as overpriced and for those who have too much money to blow. But in the mobile world, people would gladly fork over $800+ for the flagship card without batting an eye. Perspectives eh? (yeah yeah not an apples to apples comparison I know just saying it's funny how perception of value changes)

no plenty of us have said that 1k price is BS when its a 300 dollar card. Last go around the intially release was 800 and dropped to 600-700, which is where it is at now IIRC. It is a solid 20-25% increase since last gen and i think its garbage. I won't buy it unless its under 800. Reason for me to buy it is because it'll last me til pascal and cannonlake, which will be when i buy again. my 7970m has had some amazing life and performance for a laptop card.

if AMD had an option i would go with it most likely, because it wouldn't be high way robbery. The 7970m was comparable to the 680m when it came out and was way cheaper. If amd had an option comparable to the 980m for 600 bucks like last time i would be all over it but we are just screwed this time.

I see plenty of people in this thread who have no issues forking over $800+ for that 980M, highway robbery or not. I was simply making the observation that people seem to be more accepting of paying a huge amount of cash for the top card in the mobile market, whereas in the desktop segment only the most hardcore or those who must have the latest and greatest go for the $1000 card. (yes yes lots more choices, $1000 halo card doesn't give enough performance increase to justify premium blah blah blah, not here to debate that)

i think the amount of people willing to go on ebay for a 1k card is a lot less then the desktop market personally. Furthermore, most people are buying a alptop with the 980m, which is more leik 600 dollars for the card and not 1k.

So this is how I think about it: in the mobile segment you have very limited choices, and due to a lack of competition (for now anyway), if you want the best performance then you have no choice but to pay the asking price.

In the desktop market the halo card (Titan Black) is basically a very slightly overclocked $700 card (780 Ti). Same idea with the original Titan vs the 780, except the Titan was at least ~10% faster, but then the 780 had a massive price drop once AMD cards hit the market. So most don't bother with the halo card unless they need it for specific reasons (compute, 6GB vram etc).

MSI's global warranty works in the MSI center in Australia. Even if the laptop was purchased from the US. I cannot comment about Gigabyte's though, and I am DEAD SURE if you went Clevo you'd need to buy from Metabox or something.

There's also Logical Blue One for another Clevo reseller in Australia (they sell Clevos under the Horize brand).

Years ago another reseller went bankrupt in Australia, and LBO picked up the slacked and honored the existing warranty for those who bought laptops from the bankrupt reseller. That scored major points in my book, and LBO has some very favorable reviews online as well.

But remember, always look for the most recent reviews of a reseller. Companies can change in a matter of DAYS, far less months/a year. If you can't find any, you can ask for any current, still-covered owners to give you feedback.

Of course. Jack their main rep appears to be quite active on some Aussie forums, and the more recent reviews still paint a favorable picture, although there have been some mixed reviews (as with every reseller, even XoticPC). However Jack always seems to follow up with the negative reviews, so that's bit reassuring.

I'm not saying they're flawless in any way, but compared to ours, they're way ahead.

Yeah the GT72 is so ridiculously overpriced I could build the model on XoticPC for it on a P377SM-A... except I'll end up with TWO 980Ms instead of 1. And a MQ CPU instead of a HQ. Price within $100 of each other.

MSI is getting high off the stuff superman uses, I swear.

Anyway, I don't get why the gigabyte would best the clevo... the gigabyte is smaller and still handles its temps pretty well, but the clevo should be cheaper. It's all up to you in the end.

Xotic PC have told me that they plan to review the P35X v3. So that should be up within the next two weeks, because they usually upload a review once they get hold of stock. This is assuming their ETA for this model is the same as my reseller, Overclockers UK.

From Overclockers UK website it appears they do indeed offer worldwide deliveries:
