oh man Dead Space for $10.19! But would I be able to even run that game on my computer? Specs in sig

The Deadspace deal seems to be a good deal. I'll have to mull it over.
-
DoD:Source! Argh.. I bought it at its original sale price of $7.49.. Now it's $2 something. Damn!
-
You should beable to play it pretty nicely.
-
How is this Dead Space game? Good for $10?
Lol. I don't know what I want. I still haven't picked up anything yet. I have like 3 games in total. -
I have deadspace and i have to say the gameplay is pretty meh. Its nice conceptually but I feel they failed in mechanic implementation.
-
OK. Then it's a no-go for me. He he. I really want FO3 GotY. $30 just doesn't seem like a deal with all these prices right now.
I'll wait and see what else you guys are getting. -
Nothing really interesting today....
-
Anyone tried Hearts of Iron 3? I haven't tried a new Strategy game in a while. Looks like a good WWII RTS.
-
Ask and ye shall receive =D
Finally got Dead Space, and also threw in DoD:S and KOTOR as well, bringing my total up to 6 games so far but still less than $40 -
I paid ~60$ And I ended up with about 19 games lol.
-
LMAO, I did the exact same thing. I think ima wait until the last day to buy everything just in case something goes on sale.
-
I got DoD: Source free with my CS:S retail DVDs =P

Hm, debating Dead Space. I have it for 360 already.........but i want to experience it in its full glory...
-
I thinking of getting Dead Space as well (I'm pretty much set on World in Conflict Complete Edition and SW: KotoR right now). Does anyone have any idea how well it will run on a previous-gen GPU (specs in sig)? Based on the CPU benchmarks I've seen of the game, my lowly dual-core should be more than enough, I'm just not sure how my 7950 will handle what is likely a shader-heavy game designed with current the current architecture in mind.

masterchef341 The guy from The Notebook
yeah i bought CS:S many years ago, it came with HL2DM and DOD:S
-
i could run it on high at 1280*720, 2aa, with 40+ average fps. it's not a graphically heavy game. the textures are doom 3 level. you should be fine.
-
dead space is one of the best games i played last year.
sure you arent an all powerful marine running around with guns blazing. but thats the way it should be with a horror fps. the pace of the game and the limited ammo, the creature design, and the ship's atmosphere - this is the modern day system shock.
its an intelligent , compelling game with some genuine horror experiences.
highly highly recommended -
Thanks for the quick replies
That's on your 8600? I can max Doom 3 @ 1600x1200 (I don't think the game supports anything higher, though it has been a while since I played), so I guess I can push near-max at that res with Dead Space. Thanks for the info!
Based on some of the gameplay vids I've watched on Youtube, there are some pretty epic looking boss battles (though I may have spoiled it for myself - oh well, what can you do?). Looks like I'll be adding this to the cart in a few minutes. I think I'll get this and KotoR now and wait a little while longer for WiC just in case it goes on a deeper sale and/or gets packaged with something I might want (don't really know what that could be at this point). The last 24-hr daily deals end on Jan 3rd, right? -
kotor is simply the best starwars game next to the venerable tie fighter. epic story, id dare say even better than revenge of the sith (which was kinda meh for me)
WiC was great graphically but the gameplay was so-so. for a real rts get company of heroes and dow2 instead.
dow2 IS diablo in space in single player and last stand mode. while multiplayer is your standard rts mode (sans base building). now is they just had a random terrain genrator for single player... -
smartest thing to do really.
-
The absence of base building is what kept me from buying DoW 2 (along with the units having morale levels - something very new to me as I'm used to all units following my orders without question, even on suicide runs ala SupCom).
Has anyone ever had any problems playing games through Steam? Playing the World in Conflict demo, the keyboard gradually became warmer until about ten minutes in the screen went completely black i.e. system went nuclear. What's strange is my fans were only on mid-level, yet when I played the demo again and exited after going through the tutorial only (the first time was the campaign), my GPU temp was 87 C, a level I haven't seen it reach even after a couple hours of Fallout 3. I was playing on mostly high settings at 1200p with a constant 40+ fps, no slowdown toward the end.
WiC seems like a fun game, mainly the lack of base building, camera control, and reinforcement deployment are the aspects that set it apart from all RTS games that I've played. -
hmmm 87 is running too hot for my tastes
maybe try lowering your res or better yet use a cooling pad with your notebook -
I've tried propping up the back with a couple bottle caps which seemed to decrease max temps on all games by about 5 C, but several games always seem to push my GPU to its boiling point no matter the graphics settings (Prototype comes to mind; low, med, or high, the GPU always gets up over 90 C before the fans kick on high and the temp settles at around 75 C). I've looked into a notebook cooler, but it seems most that I find are designed for 15.4" max. Do you have any cooler in mind? Most of the ones I've seen also seem to focus on airflow toward the center of the bottom of the notebook when the M1710 needs help toward the back corners where the fans are.
-
youll probably end up getting your fourth gpu is you continie gaming at those temps.
best you undervolt your cpu and apply thermal paste if you can. there are many dummy guides around the forum on how to do this.
you could also try altering your fan profiles to kick in earlier. check the dell forums.
i use an aeolus 15inch cooler which used to work well with my 17incher. has a single large fan that works well with 15 and 17 inch nb's
ubtil then i would avoid games that gets my temps to the high 80's -
The first couple times my GPU fried I hadn't done anything involving the video card except watch movies/TV shows, no games for the previous couple weeks and then out of nowhere, artifacting appeared while watching a video. At this rate, by the time I get a cooler the gpu will have melted along with the CPU (who had the idea to put the GPU directly above the CPU?). Anyway, I'll do some more research into the brands before I invest in a cooler. Good to know the smaller coolers will fit a 17" notebook. That widens the selection considerably. Unfortunately I've closed out of even SW Battlefront and saw the GPU temp had reached 83 C at one point. My supposedly high end GPU is getting toasty from a 5-yr old game? Something is definitely wrong with this model.
Edit: It seems speeds on the Steam servers have increased dramatically (for now) as now I'm seeing my download reach about 1050 kbps as opposed to only around 600 a couple days ago. -
The only problem I've noticed specific to Steam is that during peak-rate usage times such as these few days, you'll get a "failed to contact server" error from Steam when trying to launch the game. It doesn't happen often but you can usually get around it by launching the binary instead.
-
I had it, and it just wasn't my kind of game. I'm just not into horror games. I did however like the graphics and effects.

All this competition for digital sales has definitely worked in gamers' favour for once!
http://www.direct2drive.com/holiday/
D2D's sale has being going on for sometime, but they sparingly offered 1 sale, 1 day. Recently now after Steam's blowout it seems as if they've changed their tune and are marking down many games at once (still nowhere in comparison to Steam). Still I know many of us here missed the Section 8 deal last time from Steam and just wanted to give a heads up, it's there for $13:
http://www.direct2drive.com/2/8147/product/Buy-Section-8-Download
What I'm curious of now is how many of us have fallen under the Steam spell? Months ago I would have gone wherever the prices were cheapest, but now with having so many more games on Steam I'm severely tempted to pass on this deal and wait for Steam to counter it simply so I can have all my games in one location. Who else now finds themselves becoming "exclusive" with Steam? -
Red_Dragon Notebook Nobel Laureate
Holy! $12.50 for Section 8? That is a great deal.
That is also a great deal for both NFS: SHIFT and Resident Evil 5. -
Umm at Target in the clearance section Section 8 is 8 bucks now and I got Resident Evil 5 for $12.50. But Shift is a great deal, I would get it but when I played the demo I hated how when I turned left the steering would automatically align itself straight again.
Also at @thony, I don't know what you mean by steam spell, but I have been a supporter of theirs forever now. It is the only place I get my digital distribution games even if the competitors are cheaper. -
there probably is. thats also the reason why i sold my 1 1/2 year old hp. they card fried on me too. but i did overclock it. your best bet would actually just to buy a new notebook instead of having to buy a new gpu every now and then.

LIAR!!!!
Nah im kidding, i forgot about that. Oh well, those deals are probably gone by now. Tomorrow may being some more action to STEAM though. -

what do you guys want to see in the next steam sale?
i wanna see Fallout 3 : GOTY hit that magic $7.49 number -
I think at $7.49 I would buy too. I played it on PS3 for 20hrs worth but ended up selling it w/ my PS3. I'm hoping for a Crysis pack sale as I skipped the one a month ago b/c I didn't think I'd be getting a laptop that could play Crysis well enough. That and maybe Guild Wars if it goes on sale again like it did on Thanksgiving, just hopefully a better price point at say $15 like Best Buy had a couple weeks ago. I just like having everything on Steam if I can get it that way =)
-
so would i lol, but $15 sounds a little more realistic.

Gonna fire up GTA IV this morning!
-
Zombie driver is pretty fun. Its like the first GTA's but you run over a ton of zombies.
-
masterchef341 The guy from The Notebook
i think i might still bite at $15, for the GOTY, since I already played through most of Fallout 3.
-
does mods work well in the steam version of fallout 3?
if i make a purchase, i'd want to mod the hell out of it. -
Killing Floor $4.99. Is it decent? Do you have to play co-op or can you play single player and/or with friendly bots?
I was recently given a $25 Visa gift card and was explicitly told to use it on myself. So I am figuring to buy some games on Steam... wish I had it earlier, d'oh! -
I bought Killing Flor at launch but haven't played it since a month after release. Since then, they've released two major content updates including weapons and maps etc. But to answer your question, it is a solid game. No offline bots, you can play single player, but it will be by yourself. The game is best with friends and other players as the gameplay is not story mode, but rather waves of zombies to kill to earn cash to buy weapon upgrades etc. There is a persistent character tracking like in Modern Warfare where it saves your kills and thus helps you level up your classes (sniper, shotgunner, assault rifle, melee).
Think of the gameplay as like Gears of War 2 or Halo ODST Firefight (if you've played them) where you clear a wave, stock up, clear more waves on open ended arena like maps. It's built off an older game engine, Unreal Tournament (Unreal 2.5) so the graphics aren't the best but still nice and after coming back to play it after playing MW2, the controls don't feel as polished or smooth. I recommend the game at $5, (cost of my lunch today) and if you can get a friend or two in on it, then it's a no brainer to me. You'll find plenty of ppl playing on dedicated servers as well. Lastly, go check out some gameplay vids if you're curious. I logged in 24 hours or so in the game and I purchased it at $15 pre-order, so I got my money's worth..
TL;DR = buy for $5 + friends, solid game, horde mode type gameplay with some RPG character leveling. -

Alright guys, the time has come.....I have $7.15 in my Paypal account, what should i buy with it? Should i wait and see more deals or should i get one of the games now on STEAM for 6.79?(Ghostbusters and Dark Athena) ..............Thanks a lot guys
on a side note when does the STEAM deals end? -
deals end on January 3rd EXCEPT for the daily deals which are only up for the timer and reset following noon EST. I suggest WAITING until January 3rd to pick up any titles NOT on the daily deals and if you DO want a game on the daily then get it. If you're wanting ghost busters and dark athena (neither on daily today) then wait until the 3rd, unless of course it shows up on 24hr special.
Since Prey keys are sold out, Bioshock is at $5. Great price, if I hadn't already beaten it twice on 360 I'd have bought this on steam. -
Red_Dragon Notebook Nobel Laureate
^^^ +Rep my friend, that is a smart idea
I have Bioshock already (Since last years Christmas sale
)
-
Killing Floor is a great game for 5 bucks, if you guys like action mulitplayer games. It is a 6 people co op and it has tons of maps and weapons to play with. O and burnout for that price is a great deal I think im going to get it.

Original GPU lasted 14 months, first replacement 4.5 months, current card has lasted 8 months, all covered by my Complete Care warranty (got until October 2010). Since Dell is taking care of the bill, I'm just riding it out until they finally get tired/run out of replacement cards which has likely happened by now. Who knows what will happen when this card fries as Dell has been rather inconsistent with their refund/replacement policy lately (based on other threads on this and another board). Anyway, is it morbid to talk about the death of graphics cards in a gaming thread on a notebook board?
Purchased Dead Space and SW KotoR last night. Still waiting for Mass Effect (heard it is a must for RPG fans) and possibly WiC getting discounted further.
Cheers.
Get ready for another Steam sale
